Ever wondered who chooses which article is going to be "Today's Featured Article" (TFA) on the main page? Well – with the assistance of the community at the TFA requests page – that'd be me as "TFA coordinator". If you have a query about a TFA that has already been picked, please ask away; if you have a query about a TFA that you'd like to be picked, or the TFA selection process, I'll do my best to help. I have limited time and ability to edit Misplaced Pages at weekends, so for anything urgent that's TFA-related you'll need to go somewhere else, such as WT:TFAR or WP:ANI.

Today's featured article blurb is this...

  • January 22
Caitlin Clarke in 2024

Caitlin Clark (born January 22, 2002) is an American professional basketball player for the Indiana Fever of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). In her college freshman season with the Iowa Hawkeyes, she earned All-American honors; as a sophomore, Clark was again first-team All-American and in her junior and senior seasons, she was the national player of the year. She became the Division I women's career and single-season leader in points and is regarded as one of the greatest collegiate players of all time. Clark was selected first overall by Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA draft. In her first season, she won the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, made the All-WNBA First Team and WNBA All-Star Game. At youth international level, Clark won three gold medals with the United States, including two at the FIBA Under-19 Women's World Cup. Since her college career, she has helped to popularize women's basketball, a trend known as the "Caitlin Clark effect". (Full article...)

A beer!

For the "poor wretch." Let the hoppy goodness determine consensus. NeilN 20:42, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
And the answer is... pumpkin beer (not that the pumpkin taste was particularly noticeable in last night's beer, but perhaps I wasn't trying hard enough). Thank you. Bencherlite 08:21, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
May I add here, to pumpkin taste? You broke the rules to honour a person, thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:50, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Abu Nidal

Hi Bencherlite, I would very much prefer that this not be TFA. I wrote it a long time ago. I wasn't keen on having Joel Brand featured for the same reason, and it's not something I'd want to do again. SlimVirgin 14:15, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

@SlimVirgin: That's a shame - it's an interesting article and still in good condition, but if I can't persuade you then I'll shuffle it back into the deck and re-deal. Bencherlite 09:26, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
I would assist persuading, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:29, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
The proposed date might not be a good choice, as it's a national holiday (Thanksgiving) in the United States. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:12, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
You have Haflinger set for TFA on Monday, why not swap that article for TG? Cute fuzzy pony-sized horse, not in the least controversial (and as I am the only lead editor still on wiki to babysit it, so I'll have the day off so it's easier for me to watch it that day). Then put something you already have set for later on the 24t... Montanabw 03:58, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Oooops. Thanks for pointing out the Thanksgiving thing. I can see that featuring an international terrorist might not be the most appropriate choice. In fact I know there's a Thanksgiving-related FA which I can use... I'll fix this when I get a chance (weekends aren't great for editing time). Bencherlite 08:19, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
I missed the date as well, support the article but not on the day when DYK will serve pumpkin pie ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:03, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Bencherlite, thank you, that's appreciated. Sorry, Gerda. SlimVirgin 20:38, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

TFAR for Fuck: Word Taboo and Protecting Our First Amendment Liberties

I have to ask, is this perhaps a record for the longest TFAR discussion? Snuggums (talk / edits) 04:51, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

@SNUGGUMS: I'm sure it is - looking purely at byte size it's already 50% longer than Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/Fuck (film), which itself was about double the size of Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/History of Gibraltar, which itself was about double the size of the two nominations at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo. These are the four most discussed nominations I can think of. Bencherlite 09:26, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
This is also probably the longest closing message I've ever read for a discussion. Not sure who will be the next TFA coordinator, but wishing that user luck. Snuggums (talk / edits) 19:15, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
As I said, it was a long train journey... Bencherlite 19:17, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Franklin Pierce blurb

Hi Bencherlite, thanks for moderating TFA; that sounds like a big job. I notice the blurb for the Franklin Pierce article for Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/November 23, 2014 is the version before I made an edit to it. I had tried to help by raising the character count of the blurb. Was my edit bad? Prhartcom (talk) 01:02, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

I often play around with blurbs, no matter who wrote them! And I started from your version, not the version before. But, for example, I changed "brigadier general in the Army" to "brigadier general" (saves space, eliminates unnecessary detail), and changed "before his election as a compromise candidate for president" to "before becoming the Democrats' compromise candidate in the 1852 presidential election", thus getting in a link to the 1852 election article". Some other space-saving edits allowed me to work in a reference to his family, and so on. Thanks for your help. Bencherlite 09:39, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes indeed, in fact I gratefully remember you once made a blurb of mine better by parenthetically explaining the image I supplied! I see you are right; this blurb is as you said; I was wrong; thank-you for explaining. I see you even mentioned the president's wife, which I had considered also; that looks good. Only one change of yours made the impact worse, not better, in my opinion; the former sentence was: "Although he fully expected to be renominated by the Democrats, he was not supported by his party for re-election" instead of just tacking on "and the Democrats did not support his bid to be re-elected" to an unrelated sentence. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 06:17, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
You deserve a stack of these for all your work at TFA. Sad to see you step down from the role: you've set the bar incredibly high over the last two years, and it'll take an exceptional individual to takeover from you.

I hope you'll be able to make London drinks soon (email to follow this evening)!

Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 19:30, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Cheers indeed. Look forward to it. Bencherlite 19:35, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
