===As New and Renewable Energy Minister, Punjab===
As New and Renewable Energy Minister, Punjab, he invited entrepreneurs from across the country and the NRIs to invest in solar power sector. The result was that Punjab was able to attract investment worth Rs 4,000 crore<ref>{{cite news|last1=PTI|first1=Agency|title=Punjab gets Rs 4,000 crore investment for solar projects|url=http://www.dnaindia.com/money/report-punjab-gets-rs-4000-crore-investment-for-solar-projects-sukhbir-singh-badal-2107167|accessdate=16 September 2015|agency=PTI|publisher=DNA India|date=22 July 2015}}</ref> in solar power generation. Solar Power generation increased from a meagre 9 megawatt to 541 megawatt by 2016<ref>{{cite news|last1=Khanna|first1=Ruchika .M|title=State to generate 2,000 MW solar power|url=http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/punjab/state-to-generate-2-000-mw-solar-power/110612.html|accessdate=16 September 2015|agency=Tribune News Service|publisher=The Tribune|date=23 July 2015}}</ref>. The idea was to involve farmers in setting up solar power plants on their own land where they could utilise the power so generated for their own needs and sell the surplus power to Punjab State Power Corporation which guaranteed to buy back surplus power under an agreement<ref>{{cite news|last1=Rambani|first1=Vishal|title=‘Power-surplus’ Punjab to buy 4,000 MW during peak summer|url=http://www.hindustantimes.com/patiala/power-surplus-punjab-to-buy-4-000-mw/article1-1344965.aspx|accessdate=16 September 2015|publisher=Hindustan Times|date=8 May 2015}}</ref>.
