The Fiat Freemont is a crossover SUV segment D produced in Mexico by FIAT from 2011 to 2015 and marketed until 2016. The car replaces the Fiat Ulysse as well as the Dodge Journey for the European market.
Chrysler rebadged the Mexico-manufactured Journey in Europe after model year 2011 as the Fiat Freemont, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2011, and began marketing the Durango.
The Freemont had its Italian launch in the end of May 2011. It has two front-wheel-drive turbodiesel variants the 140 PS (103 kW; 138 hp) and the 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) version of Fiat's 2.0 L Multijet turbodiesel. Later will be introduced all-wheel-drive version of 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) diesel and the Pentastar V6.
In Australia and Brazil, both the Freemont and the Journey are available for sale. However, to create a distinct market for the two vehicles, the Freemont is only available with the 2.0 and 2.4L 4-cylinder engines, while the Journey is now only sold with the Pentastar V6 engine (both engines were available before the launch of the Freemont).
The Freemont was originally available in LHD markets only, except the Netherlands. Fiat Group Automobiles Netherlands did not offer the Fiat Freemont on the Dutch market, owing to the Dutch tax climate, that would make the car too expensive to become a sales success. However, a RHD model was introduced to Australia, but not the United Kingdom. In January 2011, What Car? expressed doubts for the model to reach the United Kingdom.
Contest
This is the first model resulting from the alliance between Fiat Automobiles and Chrysler Group. The production of the vehicle takes place at the Chrysler plant in Toluca de Lerdo, in Mexico. In the global strategy of Fiat SpA, Freemont also has the task of covering the Dodge Journey market in Europe, after the withdrawal of the Dodge brand from the European market at the end of December 2010.
Characteristics
The Fiat Freemont is proposed as heir and European version of the Dodge Journey, from which it inherits largely the exterior design, with the exception of the front bezel and a few other details. Compared to Journey the interior has been completely redesigned, and shows a significant improvement in quality and finishes, to adapt the car to the tastes of the European public. The same interior will then be adopted on the twin Dodge Journey starting from MY 2011.
Slight changes, also to chassis In 2015 the range was thinner and only the versions Lounge and Cross were listed, both with the 170 HP 2.0 Multijet engine, before the interruption of production occurred in the half of the year, due to the unfavorable Euro/dollar ratio. Nevertheless, the vehicle remained on the list until the following year.
Mechanism
From the American cousin, Freemont differs mainly for diesel engines (the classic Multijet of 2 liters produced in Italy from FIAT, while the 3.6-liter petrol-powered V6 from 280 hp is Chrysler Pentastar Chrysler Pentastar), due to the different Trim settings and due to the substantial changes to suspension section, designed to make the car closer to the tastes of the public and the market European, improving the vehicle's behavior on the road, the dynamic and agility skills, while maintaining good ride comfort; to this end it intervened by modifying the calibration of shock absorbers and suspensions, whose attacks were stiffened. Furthermore, the geometry of the front suspension has been improved to reduce the roll angle. Traction is available in both Front and Integral AWD (with automatic transmission).
