Taken from his multi-million selling debut album Whenever You Need Somebody and written and produced by Stock, Aitken, Waterman, it is an upbeat catchy song possibly about a man telling a woman all the things he is "Never gonna do": give her up, let her down, run around and hurt her, make her cry, say goodbye, etc. It was a worldwide number one hit, initially in the singer's native United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at number one for five weeks and was subsequently one of the year's best selling singles.
