The sixteenth season of the American talent show competition series America's Got Talent premiered on NBC on June 1, 2021. Due to the network's live coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics, which had been postponed for a year, the program was forced to take a two-week hiatus to avoid clashing with this. This season sees the return of Simon Cowell as a judge, after recovering from an accident the previous year that made him unable to attend the live rounds in the previous season, and the replacement of the Judges Cuts round with a format arrangement used in Britain's Got Talent. In addition, it also features the first group Golden Buzzer to be conducted in the program's history, allowing for a sixth automatic place to the live rounds to be granted.
Season overview
Despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, production staff opted to go ahead with a new season for 2021 on the belief that the early rollout of vaccines would ease restrictions on production. Open auditions were mostly done online or via recorded video sent in to researchers, with spaces made available until the end of January 2021. On February 24, 2021, producers announced the new season's line-up of judges and host as unchanged, revealing that Cowell would be returning following his accident the previous year that had forced him to be absent in the fifteenth season's live episodes. Closed auditions were held across March and April, with final editing arranged to be completed before the season's premiere at the beginning of June. A two-week break in the schedule was also arranged to avoid the program clashing with the live broadcast of the Tokyo Olympics, after they had been postponed for a year.
Production was still impacted by government regulations within California to combat the spread of COVID-19 – although live audiences were allowed to attend closed auditions when they were filmed for the season, producers recommended reduced numbers as a precaution. When audition episodes were eventually broadcast, editing staff increased the numbers through a combination of virtual audiences and footage of audiences that had been taken from previous seasons, with this arrangement of editing highlighted in end credits to ensure that viewers were not deceived into believing America's Got Talent had broken state government regulations. During auditions, both the judges and the host, having already given Golden Buzzers to five different participants, opted to grant an additional one, at Cowell's request and with unanimous agreement between them, marking the first time in the program's history that a group Golden Buzzer was given.
Following the previous season, Cowell decided to replace the second round's format for the program, opting for incorporating the deliberation format used by himself and the judges on Britain's Got Talent. Similar to this program's format, the judges would confer together at another site after all auditions had been completed, and deliberate on who amongst the participants they had voted for would proceed to the live rounds, alongside those who received a Golden Buzzer. While these deliberations would mostly be done off-camera, some would be filmed and used to fill in the remaining portions of the final audition episode for the season.
