Citizenship deprivation

The British Home Office removed Sharif's British citizenship in 2017, on the grounds of 'secret intelligence'. So that he can deny links to Al-Qaeda publicly, Sharif's lawyers obtained an order for his anonymity to be lifted. In his appeal Sharif requested an open court hearing and for evidence to be brought before a judge and jury. As a result of Sharif's citizenship revocation the Syria Civil Defence distanced itself from him, but several of their volunteers expressed concern and dismay at the news.

Sharif was detained by the salafist jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in June 2020. He was released in July, but subsequently re-arrested, and released again in November 2020. Sharif maintains that he was tortured while being held by HTS.
