This page defines the meaning of the generic word autoroute. For full country-specific defninitions, see Autoroutes of France, Autoroutes of Quebec and Autoroutes of Switzerland. There is also a software application called Microsoft AutoRoute.

Autoroute is a French word meaning a controlled-access highway with no cross traffic referred to as freeway, motorway or expressway in English. In most varieties of English the word autoroute is usually reserved for freeways in the francophone world whilst in Quebec English it can be used to refer to expressways.
