Peening: History

Hi, I want to add some paragraphs to the History section of the Peening article Peening to improve this section and also to give some information about the use of peening to improve metal strength. Both these issues are discussed on the Peening Talk page.Talk:Peening. I have prepared the text in my sandbox but would like to have it reviewed before inserting it onto the live page. How can I move it to the draft review page? Thanks CSK45Kays (talk) 15:19, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, CSK45Kays, and welcome to the Teahouse. The Draft (WP:AFC) mechanism is only for new articles, so cannot be used here.
I suggest either:
  1. Be Bold, and copy your new text into the article, and see if anybody disagrees, or
  2. Post your proposed text on Talk:Peening and see if anybody disagrees. If not, you can copy it into the article.
You could also post at WT:WikiProject Metalworking, linking to the Talk page or you sandbox, though that project says that it is semi-active, so you might not get any reply. ColinFine (talk) 15:51, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello Colin, Thanks for your reply. I think I'll go ahead and post it - there's virtually no activity on the talk page. Thanks again. CSK45Kays (talk) 12:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

GA / FA of a cinematographer

I would like to know if there is any GA or FA about a cinematographer. Also, is there a way to search for GA/FA articles from a particular category? TIA <3 Jeraxmoira (talk) 20:58, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Although there are always issues with using the WP category tree, petscan offers a means of answering the question by looking for articles that are in category:good articles and some other category, such as cinematographers, e.g. https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=26392890 --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:31, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jeraxmoira Welcome to the Teahouse. An alternative route in is by going to WP:WikiProject Film, you will find hidden in its depth a table of 'Article Assessments', listing all topics that fall under that group, both by quality and 'importance' to the project. See it here. Click the number in the appropriate row to find a link to a list of GA and list of FA articles tagged by that Project. I hope that helps. Hint: Look at the talk page of any article that interests you to see which WikiProjects that article is claimed by (often more than one). I think every project has a similar table, which is useful for finding not only the highest quality articles, but also the shortest, the most important, and the most in need of easy improvement. Hope this helps, though I think Tagishsimon's answer addresses your question more directly. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:31, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much Tagishsimon and Nick Moyes. I was not aware of petscan and WP1.0 before. This was very helpful <3 Jeraxmoira (talk) 19:48, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Mika Muramatsu

Can you create it now? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.207.178.201 (talk) 22:19, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

You can read WP:YFA and create it yourself, or you can request it at WP:RA but that may take a long time. RudolfRed (talk) 22:28, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
The draft has already been created - Draft:Mika Muramatsu - and the user presumably wants it promoted. It's in the AfC queue. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:32, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
Indeed, can you create Mika Muramatsu? 193.207.178.201 (talk) 22:33, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
No. I'm not convinced the references are reliable sources - WP:RS. (And the photo is a copyright violation). I expect whoever picks it up on Articles for Creation will reject it. Please read WP:RS and find better sources for the article. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:38, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
The image has now been deleted as a copyvio, and a long history of previous AfC rejections has been restored to the draft. If you do not find better sources, the article will not be created. And you are at substantial risk of the draft being rejected outright, with no possibility of resubmitting it. WP people only have so much patience. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:57, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I've already declined this once. Nine other editors have also declined it. (Or possibly more than nine have: looking through the draft's history for the improperly removed decline notices is a rather tiring chore and I may have missed one or two.) Not wanting to appear vindictive, I shall refrain from rejecting the draft. Another editor may wish to do so. -- Hoary (talk) 22:59, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I brought this to ANI Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Draft:Mika Muramatsu sorry if I made a mistake it is the first time I brought something to ANI Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 23:23, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't think it needed taking to ANI. AfC is big enough to look after itself. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:26, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
The IP has indicated they're done with the draft. I've declined it. The subject may well be notable, fwiw, but it'll likely require someone with Japanese language skills to revive it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:42, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I restored the final two AfC decline notices to the draft. All thirteen are now visible. Folly Mox (talk) 03:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Someone please double-tap this zombie draft. David notMD (talk) 09:51, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Apropos of zombies, David notMD, how about an article flagged as failing to cite any source for 11 years, 11 months and counting? -- Hoary (talk) 21:02, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, that's no good. AfDd. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:10, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

What is making this draft class article assess as start?

Totally inane question but I like to use the WikiProject Crime assessment table so I can find unassessed articles and assess them for the project, and this minor thing is bugging me. This rejected draft-class article shows up as start class for some reason despite not being classed as that and I have no idea why. It's not classed as start on the talk page. Me removing all the unnecessary tags did not fix it. It's been a few days and the other entries have updated so it's not just the site waiting to reload. Am I missing something really obvious? Why does this assess as start? PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:26, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, PARAKANYAA. https://wp1.openzim.org is a website that is unaffiliated with Misplaced Pages and I suggest that you just ignore that website. A rating there is of no value on Misplaced Pages. Also, the draft was declined, not rejected. That is an important distinction. Cullen328 (talk) 02:47, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I didn't make the draft haha. Sorry, forgot about that terminology difference, my bad. I know it's unaffiliated but the WP1.0 bot has it stubbornly marked as start and I've never seen that before. Guess it's bugged out or something. PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:52, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
(ec) I speculate, but it may be that the Misplaced Pages 1.0 Server design is flawed. There are a couple of date columns, which afaics are the talk page version dates which is it relying on for the importance and class information. For whatever reason it is relying on the 10 July 2023 talk page for the start rating. The pattern seems to be that it is selecting the date at which the first importance rating was made - this diff, this version; and the first date at which a class parameter was added - this diff, this version. It's then not noticing that that start class has been removed. idk why, but, as I say, smells like a design issue. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:55, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
PARAKANYAA, Misplaced Pages:Version 1.0 is a 20 year old project that is moribund. You can safely ignore anything that came out of that project. Cullen328 (talk) 03:04, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I think the people who are still working on that Misplaced Pages 1.0 Server this year, fixing issues &c, would be a bit pissed off to hear you diss their project like that, Cullen328. PARAKANYAA, its owners are still around; you can talk to them on Misplaced Pages talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:19, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I mean, even Template:WP1.0 has been deleted. Folly Mox (talk) 03:22, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
It's not clear what you mean. Both the tool and the project supporting the tool are still alive. Try again. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:23, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Not to mention that the ratings systems are used project-wide. It's not exactly a weird niche thing. -- asilvering (talk) 10:15, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
So, anyway: logged as a new issue: https://github.com/openzim/wp1/issues/695 --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:41, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Aligning templates

If there is a {{left}} and a {{right}} template to left-align and right-align things, is there a {{top}} and a {{bottom}} template? I tried both of them, but it said that they were unused templates being used for something kinda like a disambiguation page.

Thanks, Shadestar474 04:28, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Like something that would align the chosen template/text with the bottom edge of the closest content above it? Shadestar474 04:34, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Can't it be done by something like this?
<div style="bottom:0px;">stuff goes here</div> Ca 15:49, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I admittedly don't know much CSS, so take that with a grain of salt. Ca 15:49, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thank you! I thought it would be a template, guess I was looking in the completely wrong place!
Best regards, Shadestar474 18:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

I want to make a nice user page can anyone help

pls help me I don't know how to code XUnknown Entity (talk) 08:29, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

You may find something helpful at Misplaced Pages:User page design guide. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:15, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
XUnknown EntityYour current User page content goes against the guidelines at WP:UP. I suggest you deleted everything and start over. David notMD (talk) 10:03, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Why can you explain please XUnknown Entity (talk) 15:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
The first step would be to remove the phrase "something that makes you wonder why more children aren't aborted?" from the userpage. Ca 15:46, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Again, see WP:UP. what goes there is content that is about your background and intentions as all that pertains to your intentions as a Misplaced Pages editor. At present, nothing you have created applies to that guideline. David notMD (talk) 17:52, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

notification settings

Hi. For new accounts on enwiki, by default, do they get notification after successfully mentioning/pinging other editor? I am not sure about English Misplaced Pages, but on all the other projects, you have to turn this on from the preferences. —usernamekiran (talk) 12:07, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, usernamekiran, and welcome to the Teahouse and to English Misplaced Pages. I'm not quite sure what you're asking. When somebody pings me, I get a notification, but when I ping somebody else, I do not get a notification (though I hope that they do!). Does that answer your question? ColinFine (talk) 12:59, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@ColinFine: Hi. yes, thats what I was trying to ask, thank you for your response/sharing your experience. In case you are wondering, under Special:Preferences, in "notifications" section, you get two options: one to get notification on successful ping, and other for failed pings. I might have turned these on years ago which I cant recall now. A couple of years later, I had similar issue on other wikimedia project, so I made changes to global configurations - Special:GlobalPreferences#mw-prefsection-echo. Yesterday, I had same issue on wikitech, which is mediawiki project, but out of scope of WP:SUL, and global preferences. I was aware about wikitech, but that gave me the doubt regarding enwiki's default settings as I couldnt recall turning them on. Thanks again for your response. —usernamekiran (talk) 15:20, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran: Not by default, no. I remember going to my preferences to allow notifications for when a ping was unsuccessfully delivered and the option to receive notifications on successful pings was unchecked. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:35, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran: I tried "Reset settings" in an alternate account. "Failed mention" and "Successful mention" are disabled everywhere. There have been cases where some default preferences depend on when the account was created so I cannot guarantee it has always been like this. I assume a reset uses the current default for new accounts. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:12, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter: yes, this is possible. my account was created in early 2012, that is almost 12 years now. Maybe it was default in those days. —usernamekiran (talk) 16:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Introducing a mathematician

User:Drmohammadimath/sandbox - Misplaced Pages

Hi.

I have written a Misplaced Pages page for a Mathematician and I wrote all facts about him by citing some references. I do not intend to say that he is brilliant or notable . I just want to introduce him to young Mathematician. But the editors declined the page and said that you should provide some references to show that he is notable and brilliant...

But I just want to introduce him...like the other information that people get from Misplaced Pages!

What can I do now? Because the page is well-written and all the information are correct with citing the references Drmohammadimath (talk) 14:06, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Drmohammadimath, and welcome to the Teahouse.
I'm afraid that "introducing" somebody is not part of the purpose of Misplaced Pages - indeed, you might even say that it is a kind of promotion, which is not allowed on Misplaced Pages.
A Misplaced Pages article summarises what other people, unconnected to the subject have chosen to publish about the subject - nothing more. All of your references in Draft:Stefano De Marchi are to works by de Marchi, but they are irrelevant. Misplaced Pages requires substantial works about de Marchi, not written or published by himself, or his colleagues, or his institutions.
If you can find at least three sources about him which meet all the requirement5s of the golden rule, then it may be possible to write a Misplaced Pages article about him. Otherwise, you should give up, and put your energies somewhere else. We have more than six million articles, most of them crying out for people to improve them. ColinFine (talk) 14:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Drmohammadimath, please note that there's no requirement for someone to be brilliant to qualify as an article subject. We have articles about people who are the opposite of brilliant but still notable. They just need to meet the criteria set out at WP:GNG, summarised at WP:GOLDENRULE (WP:NPROF might be relevant here too). Cordless Larry (talk) 18:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Drmohammadimath, the English of the draft and the English of your question above seem remarkably different. It's as if they were written by two different people. Can you explain this contrast? -- Hoary (talk) 21:08, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Help, all the sources are in Serbo-Croatian...

Hi, the subject of this article is definitely notable, there are several independent sources and he's apparently been awarded several civic medals, but all of the sources are in Serbo-Croatian, so I can't read them! Can someone who knows these languages help out with the article? AriTheHorse 14:08, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, AriTheHorse. You might try looking at the user pages of editors in Category:User sr and especially Category:Translators sr-en. They will not all be currently active, and not all may be willing to help you, but probably some will. (I've only looked at Serbian rather than Croatian or Bosnian. If you talk about "Serbo-Croatian" nowadays, some people with one of those nationalities will get upset). ColinFine (talk) 14:31, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Best way to find sources?

After successfully creating an article for the first time just under a week ago, I have decided to move on to another article. Since the first page was related to a group of youtubers, I decided to do another youtuber, and eventually decided on Aphmau. But, before creating a draft (which I haven't done yet) I decided to find some sources. So, like the last time, I decided to go to Google and look for articles. The problem is that YouTubers get alot of junk articles written about them. "Best Youtubers", "This YouTuber released some merch" stuff like that, or articles from unreliable sources. I experienced this with the pervious article, but since Aphmau is way more popular than the subject of my last article (18 mil compared to 10 mil subscribers), I'm finding it even harder to find any reliable, independent articles with significant coverage of the source through all this junk. It took a very long time of sifting through many pages of google, using multiple different search terms to find what I needed last time, and I don't have the time to spend twice as long this time. So I wanted to ask if there is a better way.

Thanks, AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 17:21, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Maybe I should have chosen someone less popular. AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 17:25, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@AKFkrewfamKF1 If it was me looking, I would google books and news and see what pops up. No guarantee these will be useful, but at least they are weeded. If the topic was older, I'd check archive.org as well. If you stick around, the WP:LIBRARY will get available to you. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:26, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I will try those other sources, and the WP:LIBRARY once I get to 500 edits. AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 19:00, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
and 6 months. Forgot about that part. AKFkrewfamKF1 (talk) 19:07, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't know why my last article was declined

Can anyone tell why my last article Ladli Behna Yojana declined Dhrubajit61 (talk) 18:01, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

@Dhrubajit61: It was not clear to the reader what a Yojana is. It may have other format & sourcing issues, but that seems to be the main thing. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:05, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Can u tell me how can I change the title of my article, I can't find any option to change the title Dhrubajit61 (talk) 18:39, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Ok Dhrubajit61 (talk) 18:22, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

"conquering" isn't a neutral word in State of Palestine

I noticed recent subtle POV pushing edits in that article. One of them is phrasing the 1967 war or Naksa as something as "conquering" Gaza. But can we also call the USA as conquering Iraq despite its illegal controversial nature? I don't think the word, "conquering" Gaza strip is appropriate given its controversial illegality. It's not like the international community today regards palestine Gaza strip to be legally absorbed into israel without dispute. However am also aware the topic attracts those who strongly pick a side and I don't wish to argue with persistent editors, but was I right to suggest that "conquering" is an inappropriate word to call what is deemed an illegal war? Yet when I try to mention that it should be reworded in a more balanced manner and not use puffery, my suggestion to improve the article was reverted by an editor, persistent on that page, who says I am using that Talk as a forum and breaking some arbitration rules. So what is my best course of action here to address this if I can't even discuss it on the article's talk page? 49.186.236.32 (talk) 18:01, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse! I see you posted your concern in Talk:State of Palestine, which is the best place to discuss the content of the article. I see your first attempt to raise the concern on the talk page was reverted by another editor. I don't know why you reverted your second attempt to post here. GoingBatty (talk) 18:08, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
The other editor had claimed I was using the talk page as FORUM and also breaking arbitration rules by posting my suggestion there and why they revert. They point out WP:ARBECR , which I am not too familiar with that term. But I skim read the rule and it said something about only extended confirmed editors can edit there. Considering I am not an extended confirmed editor, I assume that's their reason why I am not allowed to raise this issue on talk there. So had to revert my suggestion to improve that page. But as a non-extended confirmed editor, am I actually allowed to edit the Talk page or not? I like to ask this too here as an unsure about that.49.186.236.32 (talk) 18:22, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
WP:ARBECR states: Non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace only to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive. Unfortunately, unless you have a specific Edit request you can't edit the talk page of articles with extended confirmed restrictions. Best wishes Polyamorph (talk) 18:27, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply but am a bit confused. My edit request wasn't disruptive but a suggestion to improve the article. And also as a non-extended confirmed editor, am I not allowed to suggest that on that Talk page unless I become an extended confirmed editor? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/Talk:State_of_Palestine You wrote, Unfortunately, unless you have a specific Edit request you can't edit the talk page of articles with extended confirmed restrictions. So am I allowed to raise this issue as a non extended confirmed editor, on that talk page or not? I am telling the others to not use the word "conquering" because it creates a misleading impression that Israwl righteously absorbed Gaza strip without any issues with international laws. I think that was a fairly well explained edit request, and sorry but your explanation doesn't really confirm to me much clarity on this on whether I am allowed to make such a request on that talk page. 49.186.236.32 (talk) 18:34, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, you can make an edit request. But it has to be specific to the exact change you want made in the article, following the instructions at WP:EDITREQ and using the {{editrequest}} template. You can use the edit request wizard to simplify the process: Misplaced Pages:Edit Request Wizard. Best wishes Polyamorph (talk) 18:56, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't think this is a desired outcome of ARBECR. Not all "edit requests"—suggestions for article improvement—have to be templated WP:EDITREQs. Requiring them to all be the latter means we'll get more controversial requests, which is not the intended use of an EDITREQ. If there's a widespread view that ARBECR prevents regular talk page discussion participation from IPs, it's news to me, and I think we'd need to bring it up for ArbCom confirmation. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:01, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I think it depends, if an edit request is made without the template and it seems reasonable, it would likely be discussed but if there is "forumy" stuff attached to it, as in this case, or no sourcing, then probably not. Selfstudier (talk) 19:10, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
"Likely to be discussed" is important, but not relevant to whether it's an ARBECR violation. If it's forumy to the point of disruption, then that fails the ARBECR criteria. I don't think this IPs post took it that far. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:12, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
WP:ARBECR was updated on 11 Nov stating non-EC users can only make edit requests. I guess its possible to make an edit request without using the template, if it is sufficiently precise. I suggested the template as that's unambiguously permitted according to ARBECR.Polyamorph (talk) 19:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Oof I missed that. Thanks. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your time and explanation. I appreciate it a lot and think I understand it well now. Only very specific edit requests using a request template, for non confirmed extended editors. Seems a bit unfair, but thanks again for that information. 49.186.236.32 (talk) 19:01, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
If you're still interested in putting your original post back on the talk page, I would be wiling to restore it. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:10, 13 November 2023 (UTC) striking at 19:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Nevermind! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
It's only for contentious topics that have been protected, as indicated by a banner on the talk page. It's unfortunate that it's necessary. Most articles you can should be able to edit. Cheers Polyamorph (talk) 19:13, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Where can I ask for help on getting an editnotice template implemented?

I tried asking at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)#Implementation of Template:Refideas editnotice but no response so far, was that the wrong place to ask for that kind of help? BOZ (talk) 19:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

To be clear; I'm not asking anyone here to actually help me with the implementation, I'm just asking whether I was asking at the right place originally, and if not where I can go instead. BOZ (talk) 20:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@BOZ The alternatives seem to be WP:VPI or WP:VPR, depending on how developed your proposal is. These pages have guidance at the top but I'm not sure where your actual proposal should fit. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:21, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, those were my first two steps. :) BOZ (talk) 13:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Article help

Hello! I'm making an article, however, that article exists in a different language, I have the means to translate the information, however, I do not know if the article would then fall under plagiarism for using the other article's citations and (paraphrased) information. review

is there a way to check if a page has been patrolled/reviewed? does it show that information anywhere on the page? i have made pages before, and i am notified when they are, but i don't know if there is a way to tell other than being notified. and that is only for pages you make, what about other people's new pages? Iljhgtn (talk) 20:34, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

I think that more recently, Articles receive a note in their code, not visible on the actual page, that shows this, but it probably isn't present on older articles.
The answer may well lie somewhere in Misplaced Pages:New pages patrol; perhaps someone involved in the process will point to it. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 21:30, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

How to fight vandalism?

What are some ways I could help in the fight against vandalism? I love Misplaced Pages so much, and really want to help clean it up and fight vandalism.

Thanks, Shadestar474 21:48, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

See vandals, remove their edits, as long as the edits are CLEAR vandalism, and not some innocent mistake, and report their accounts. Imoutofchoices (talk) 00:12, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Hats Off to Del Shannon

what's missing in The Hats Off to Del Shannon article? Samchristie05 (talk) 23:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Reliable sources. AllMusic assures us the album exists, but it does not assure notbility. (Although right now I get an error 404.) The book is an Xlibris US publication, which is to say, it is a self-published book and so is not a WP:RS. Notability generally calls for more than one reliable source. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:28, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Draft:Hats Off to Del Shannon fwiw --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:28, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
what fwiw means, never heard if it before? Samchristie05 (talk) 23:30, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Generaly the best advice with initialisms like this, is to google them. As it is, it means "for what it's worth". --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:38, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
@Samchristie05: What else is missing is encyclopaedic tone. What on earth is "the real crime was that this album wasn't put out in the U.S. or Canada" doing in a proposed[REDACTED] article? What does "There was this 'album voild' between the Runaway album and what would become the Little Town Flirt album. The Album fixed this problem in England, but not in America. An opportunity was missed, but fans were still buyer of singles" mean? Why is[REDACTED] saying "An opportunity was missed". Is this just cut & paste from the self-published book? The text in the article is VERY FAR AWAY from neutral tone. If you do not see that this sort of text is inappropriate for an encyclopedia article than that seems to be a big problem. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:03, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
The drafts about albums that you have submitted and have had accepted are of better quality and referencing compared to this one, although you have made post-criticism edits to resolve the non-encyclopaedic tone. P.S. Early on, you acted as a Reviewer to approve your own drafts. Glad to see that this practice has since stopped. David notMD (talk) 00:52, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
thanks if it wasn't for Article Wizard Draft Creation i wouldn't have continue to act as a reviewer Samchristie05 (talk) 01:25, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
do you think Teenage Idol, Travelin' Man: The Complete Biography of Rick Nelson would help me find more source for Album Seven by Rick, & Spotlight on Rick? Samchristie05 (talk) 01:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
What's also missing from the Hats Off to Del Shannon draft (in its current state) is any indication that this album is Notable (in the Misplaced Pages sense). Confirmation of its existence, content, release dates etc. are useful details to have in an article (and have been well presented), but are not sufficient on their own to justify there being an article. What would do that is summaries of several pieces (published in reliable sources, such as Melody Maker, to take a random example), by various established music critics and historians talking about the album's artistic qualities, importance in Shannon's career, etc.
Brian C. Young, whose book you have cited, might be considered an established authority, since he has written material about Shannon for music publisher Bear Family Records (and perhaps other publishers?), but a self-published book is pushing the envelope, and in any case facts from it must be clearly cited to it and summarised in Neutral terms (see WP:NPOV) – anything judgemental (positive or negative) would be best confined to short quotations that are explicitly identified (e.g. by writing '. . . in his book Runaway: The Del Shannon Story (The Caps are not justified, they don't appear on the book), biographer Brian C. Young stated of the album "Xxxxx" and "Yyyyy".'). Hope this helps. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 04:03, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Is there a place where editors look for articles with little or no references?

I've just added a "More citations needed" template to Richard Morrison (film titles designer), the first time I've added a template like that, as I suspect he's one of many people I've stumbled across on IMDB over the years, who adds all their own credits, whether they're credited on-screen on not.

He might be credited in all 249 productions on his profile, but I doubt it.

I noticed his Misplaced Pages article when I was searching to see whether he worked for the titles company listed directly below him, and it seems like he did, as there's roughly 10 more films where him and that company are credited together.

The only reference on the article is an interview with him from 2008.

While reading the template I noticed it has been added to 368,000 articles, not to mention the similar templates which have also been added to articles, and wondered if there's a place where those 368,000+ articles are listed once the template has been added. Danstarr69 (talk) 00:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Yes: Category:All articles needing additional references. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:14, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Presuming you can see the hidden categories at the foot of the article, you will be able to see the categories into which articles are placed when templates are applied. I cannot remeber whether you have to set something in preferences to be able to see hidden categories; maybe someone can throw some light on that. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:17, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Tagishsimon I couldn't see the hidden categories.
However I've just had a look through the "Category:All articles needing additional references" by clicking on a letter, and searching backwards, as there seems to be no search filter, not even in the URL, to see if there were any articles listed there related to the City of Bradford, and to my surprise, I saw Bradford listed there, along with some other articles which are also well-referenced, which don't even contain the template...
...at the top of the article at least.
However I've now just enabled hidden categories, and it's listed at the bottom of the Bradford article, along with many more unneeded categories, so I think I'll be removing a lot of these soon.
How is it possible for an article to contain this hidden category at the bottom, when it doesn't contain the template message at the top? You would have thought they were linked. Danstarr69 (talk) 01:29, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
The Culture section in the Bradford article has a citations needed banner. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:41, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

First time adding to an article, getting a citation error message

Hi guys, I've only made 3-4 minor edits to articles and just made my first big edit (for me haha). I added an awards section on Neil Newbon's page for his new Golden Joystick award. When I added the reference to the article I used and published the changes, I got this error at the top: Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them

I tried to edit the reference using one of the resources in the Wiki help page to generate sources next but the error is still there. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can fix it and know how to properly add it next time please? Also if there are any suggestions for easy to use generators for citations let me know, I'm currently using a JavaScript bookmarklet. Haris00911 (talk) 03:36, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Fixed – it looks like an empty reference accidentally got added as the very first thing on the page. That would be tricky to find for sure, (probably impossible, actually, if you're using the Visual Editor, which hides the reference code). The reference you did intend to add works correctly – thank you for your contribution! Tollens (talk) 03:42, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Great catch, thank you for such a fast fix! I must have fat fingered it while figuring out the editing tools, looking forward to contributing more regularly:) Haris00911 (talk) 03:47, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

How should I write an article about an album?

I wanted to make an article about U.U.F.O (Album) but I don't really know where to start or what to write about. Comes from an artist only from Japanese Misplaced Pages with issue templates (Camellia), and I don't know where to find sources for the artist and the album. Shanshansan (talk) 08:24, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

You've got the process the wrong way around, Shanshansan. First find the reliable sources, then decide to go ahead and create an article. -- Hoary (talk) 09:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@Shanshansan: Welcome to the Teahouse! If you haven't done so already, please read WP:NALBUMS. Only proceed to create an article if you have multiple independent reliable sources that demonstrate the album meets Misplaced Pages's notability criteria for albums. Note that the sources do not have to be online and do not have to be in English. GoingBatty (talk) 16:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Let's look at a sample of Draft:Kixx Oil, 익명의 4인. "n engine oil brand focused on passenger cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles": if "focused on" means "marketed for", then write "marketed for". If it doesn't, what does it mean? "epositioned itself as a global lubricant brand encompassing automotive and industrial lubricant solutions": if "encompassing automotive and industrial lubricant solutions" means "including automotive and industrial lubricants", then write this; if it doesn't, what does it mean? What would a non-global lubricant brand be? Does "repositioned itself as" mean "became"? All of this is in a turgid kind of corporate-PR-speak; but in Misplaced Pages we don't aim to impress; we aim to inform. -- Hoary (talk) 10:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Lanka Bandaranayake Gabriel2954 (talk) 09:55, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Gabriel2954: as indicated by all seven of the "decline" notices, you need to find and cite several reliable independent published sources with extensive discussion of Bandaranayake. when editing, references are different

For the page for Prolagus, when I use the visual editor, the references are different from the original page. Or maybe they are in a different order, it's hard to tell. If you take a look, in the original page, the 1st Reference starts with Ge. When editing it starts with Hoffman. Why is this? I tried editing in source mode & it's hard for me to read, but I think in this case, the References are the same as the original page. Sunandshade (talk) 10:45, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Sunandshade, the infobox counts as the first content of the article. The reference in the infobox starts "Ge", and is listed as ref. 1. The first reference in the body of the article starts "Hoffman" and is listed as ref. 3. Ref. 2, starting "The Paleobiology Database", is harder to explain. Maproom (talk) 10:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I think ref 2 is because it's in the Prolagus#Notes, which is in the infobox. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:04, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, this is the reason - visual editor doesn't handle the order of notes well. You get a similar problem if you use sfn footnotes as well as the normal ref type: only the ref ones are properly counted. -- asilvering (talk) 13:26, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for all the info. Looks like I'll have to use the source editor but it's very difficult to find the citation in the source editor. What I did was have one window open with the original article. Then opened another for editing. Then I'd note the citation I wanted to change & used the author's name to search in the source editor. Tedious. Is there a better way? Sunandshade (talk) 18:57, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
If you're using the 2017 source editor wiki syntax should be highlighted. Otherwise you can try using WikEd, which is an alternative if you don't like using said 2017 source editor. It also comes with a feature to hide references in blocks, though it's been a long time since I've used it, so I can't tell you exactly how it's done. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:12, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@Sunandshade you can enable the article preview in source editor, which saves you the two-windows problem, but the editing process is essentially the same. -- asilvering (talk) 19:42, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Under preferences; editing, I enabled the 2017 editor & saw the vertical bar I was looking for. But turns out then you don't see the Preview button. I then unchecked the 2017 editor option & I assume I have some other editor, tho don't know which one. But then I could still see the vertical bar (which I couldn't see before). So I have no idea why I can sometimes see it & other times not.
When "using the 217 source editor wiki syntax should be highlighted." Don't know what this means. I used the 2017 editor & didn't see any hilites. I've looked at WikEd but it's quite involved to instal/use it & I have much to learn about Wiki right now so I'll do that later. Sunandshade (talk) 20:50, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
When "using the 217 source editor wiki syntax should be highlighted." Don't know what this means.
Not highlights in the conventional sense of colour being applied to text background, but rather elements being rendered in different colours. For example HTML tags like are in   in that editor. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
In preferences; editing, I chose the 2017 editor. In source editing, the tag was black just like the rest of the letters. Maybe I'm missing something. Sunandshade (talk) 21:31, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
That's odd. You may need to toggle Preferences → Gadgets → Editing → Empty Syntax highlighter. Doesn't seem it's supposed to be for the 2017 editor, though. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:40, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I checked to use the Syntax Highlighter & also enabled 2017 editor. The tag is still black like the rest. Oh well. Sunandshade (talk) 23:04, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@Sunandshade: I think I figured it out. It's not in your user preferences. To turn on syntax highlighting, while editing in source mode in the 2017 editor, click on the in the toolbar, then click Syntax highlighting. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:59, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
That works great. Things are now all different colors & it's easier to read. I tried with the 2017 & also the 2010 editors & they both showed the colors. Sunandshade (talk) 01:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Autism is a serious concept and needs all the social awareness as needed, But Misplaced Pages is declining the post.

Hi, your draft cites zero sources. The decline is not because Misplaced Pages volunteer editors think autism is a not serious concept, but the draft lacks sources to back up the claims made in the draft. Misplaced Pages is not the place to promote new organization. Please see the advice in WP:42. Ca 12:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello CA,
Couldn't find any information on prominent organization in this space , Hence started adding the organizations list.
This is the first one amongst. Drkoti (talk) 12:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@Drkoti There are articles like Autism Speaks and a whole category of US organisations listed at Category:Autism-related organizations in the United States. Note how the first article I linked includes extensive sources. You need to read this help page and this essay as you try to bring your draft up to our standards. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:03, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I think it is great that you want to expand the coverage on autism. however, you need to cite reliable sources for information you add to articles to make sure they are verifiable. i.e. readers and editors can check if the information comes from a reliable source. blank edit summary warning when editing section

The option to provide a warning if the edit summary is blank (to the extent editors choose this option) has the desirable feature of encouraging editors to describe the change. I suggest that it should apply even when doing a section edit, i.e. if you're editing a section and you fail to add text beyond the name of the section that's included by default, you should still get a warning.

IMO, a good edit summary is a matter of courtesy to the rest of the editor community. Where should I be posting this proposal? Fabrickator (talk) 14:26, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Fabrickator I've just tested this in my sandbox and (as I recollected was the case) a section edit also refuses to save unless I provide an edit summary, since I've got the relevant option selected at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. The section's name between / marks doesn't count as a summary as far as the software is concerned. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Getting started

Hi! Brand new here and the coding is literally like a different language to me. I'm currently writing my postgrad thesis about an Irish musical, and when I went to look it up, it's not here. References are made to it in a couple of places, but not an article in its own right, which I think it should be. But finding the process so confusing. Is there any way I can just send the info to someone more experienced and they can just put it up? MaryElleOrr (talk) 14:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

MaryElleOrr Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You could make a request at Requested Articles, but is is backlogged to the point of uselessness- if anyone sees your request at all, it could be some time before it is acted on, if ever. The best way to see an article created is to do it yourself- though as you seem to be aware it is challenging. If you're interested in taking the time to learn, the new user tutorial and Article Wizard are helpful. 331dot (talk) 14:49, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I didn't realize you had already attempted to write a draft(Draft:Caisleáin Óir)- as a new user you didn't do too bad from a technical standpoint. I would note that language like "began its journey" is to be frank promotional fluff that should be toned down; text should be very dry and matter-of-fact. 331dot (talk) 14:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I only used "began its journey" because I got it off their website. I find the whole thing quite prohibitive. MaryElleOrr (talk) 15:50, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
(So you did – you even copied the spelling mistake "it's".) Yes, creating a new article is difficult. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without considerable experience of editing, say 300 surviving edits to existing articles. Maproom (talk) 16:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, MaryElleOrr, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Misplaced Pages. There is no doubt that, while Misplaced Pages is the encyclopaedia that anybody can edit, this does not mean that it is easy to learn - and the most challenging bits are not technical questions, but the rules on notability and reliable sources.
I liken it to playing an instrument - if you've never played a violin before, and you pick one up, you wouldn't expect to be able to give a recital, or even busk on the street successfully, until you'd learnt how to play it.
Changing metaphors, if you liken writing an article to building a house, the bits you can see are not the only work to do, or even the most crucial. If you don't survey your site, or check local building regulations, first, then whatever you build is going to fall down. The parallel for that in Misplaced Pages world is that if you do not find adequate sources that are reliably published, independent of the subject, and contain significant coverage of the subject first, then it is possible that no article can be written, and if one can, it is likely that you will go about it BACKWARDS and make a difficult task even harder.
Misplaced Pages is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Misplaced Pages is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. So little or nothing from their website is relevant to a Misplaced Pages article about them - maybe a few uncontroversial facts like dates and places.
My advice, as it always is to new editors, is to put aside the idea of writing a new article ("giving a recital") completely for a few weeks or months, while you learn how Misplaced Pages works by making improvements to some of our six million existing articles - starting with small things like copy editing, and moving up to finding and adding suitable sources. Once you can do that successfully, you will be ready to read your first article and try creating one.
If you go to the community portal you will find some suggested tasks. ColinFine (talk) 16:12, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@MaryElleOrr: Welcome to the Teahouse. Aside from what other editors have said, I'm going to caution you from lifting text wholesale from other sites, as more often than not there's a copyright present, and to put it here would contravene Misplaced Pages's copyright violations policy, which can potentially have legal ramifications for the site. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:55, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Question

Why isn't someone winning an award from the LGBT Youth Line - since they are an INDEPENDENT, THIRD-PARTY, SEPARATE FROM THE PERSON - enough for notoriety? especially when paired with magazine articles about the person?

Still waiting for an answer to this question while the article I wrote about someone I only met once gets removed inappropriately since you guys did not check the references. Get a copy of the fab magazine and the Xtra magazine in question.
What steps do I have to contest this? I've satisfied the criteria. 142.126.237.15 (talk) 17:23, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
It's not clear that the award you're talking about confers notability; the awarder is a local charity in Ontario. Nor is it clear that WP:GNG is met for the subject of the article. Certainly the description you have given of the subject does not amount to notability. I don't think you have satisfied WP notability criteria. --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:42, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
You're already receiving useful advice from the AFC volunteers reviewing your submission, please continue working with them and following their advice. Not every person or subject can qualify for a Misplaced Pages article - our basic inclusion standard is the general notability guideline, and the reviewers are trying to suggest what sorts of sources you need to find to demonstrate that this person meets the guideline. If you think that you have provided suitable sources, you could try discussing them individually on the draft's talk page, it may help to illustrate your point and/or it might draw better advice from the reviewers. Please do not just repeatedly resubmit your draft without making any changes, it will just be declined again. Thank you. Ivanvector (/Edits) 17:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, IP user. "Notable" in the special way that Misplaced Pages uses it, is not about being famous, popular, influential, worthy, or deserving (though some of these often go with it). It is almost entirely about whether or not there is enough wholly independent material about them, reliably published, to base an article on - remembering that Misplaced Pages is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Misplaced Pages is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. New article rejected

Hello, I am new on creating articles and I suggested the creation of one for "cybersecurity" and got rejected. The reason was that it already exists under another article: "Thank you for your submission, but the subject of this article already exists in Misplaced Pages. You can find it and improve it at Computer security instead."

The article I suggested explains that difference between computer security and cybersecurity, you can see the draft here: https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Cybersecurity

What would you suggest for improving my draft in order to be accepted as a new article? Pcoronaf (talk) 17:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Pcoronaf: Welcome to the Teahouse! I suggest starting a conversation at Talk:Computer security to see if others share your opinion that the topics are worthy of separate articles. GoingBatty (talk) 17:55, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I would ask the reviewer if they feel that Talk:Computer security#Requested move 4 July 2023 demonstrates broad consensus for a split. (There is an WP:AVOIDCYBER essay, but it doesn't seem to apply here.) Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 19:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

how to reply to a Teahouse topic

Newbie here. I've asked a few questions in Teahouse & have had useful replies. I have made replies on those replies. But now, I can't figure out how do make a reply to a Teahouse topic. Isn't there a "reply" button or something? Maybe I'm missing it, or maybe I got in some weird mode where it doesn't show. My username shows at the top so I assume I'm logged in. I did log into using my cell phone for the 1st time & hope that didn't change things. I then logged out on my cell phone but that didn't seem to help. Frustrated I did it yesterday but today it escapes me. I would appreciate any answers, but remember, if you are not completely clear, then I can't ask follow up questions until I get this resolved. Thanks. Sunandshade (talk) 18:16, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Sunandshade the reply button is called Reply tool. Sometimes, if you haven't put a correctly-formatted signature after the message, there will be no reply button after the comment. You can always go into source/visual editor and add the reply yourself; to indent, put a colon (:) at the beginning of a comment. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 18:31, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks a million for your "reply tool" info. I found I needed to check: preferences; editing; Enable quick replying. Can't figure out how it worked before & hard to believe I accidentally uncheck that box, but it's working now. On a related note, I tried out using the editor & ":" just so I'd know how to use it. That worked ok but when using the source editor, the vertical line showing the location of where text will be entered did not show up. That made editing very difficult. Is there something I can do to make it show? Sunandshade (talk) 18:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
It doesn't show on the source editor. We mainly just look at how many colons are on the previous reply and add one. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:55, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Too bad the vertical bar (for insert text here) doesn't show. I didn't mean to figure out the # of :'s but for when I've typed something & go back to change it a bit, it's hard to see where my edit will appear without the vertical bar. Sunandshade (talk) 19:04, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Da drago stoone. What you are describing is promotion, and strictly prohibited on Misplaced Pages. If your friend get's documented and written about in multiple secondary sources like magazine articles, books, TV shows, newspapers - then someone will eventually write an article about him. But Misplaced Pages is not to be used to write biographies of random people who do not meet our special definition of 'notable'. Qcne (talk) 19:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Weird that you have your friend's name, Drago. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
i didn't get ur point Da drago stoone (talk) 19:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
The point is that if you (posting here) and 'your friend' really do have the same name, then most people might conclude that 'your friend' is really you, and you are trying to smuggle autobiography into Misplaced Pages which, though not outright forbidden, is both heavily frowned upon and extremely difficult to do while remaining in compliance with Misplaced Pages's requirements.
If on the other hand you are not 'your friend', then by using your friend's name as your User Account name you are effectively impersonating them – impersonating a real person with your User name is not allowed on Misplaced Pages. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 03:15, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Season 11 The Walking Dead

I wound like to have this problem checked into, I was in your section on (The Walking Dead (season 11) and I was viewing the episodes and was able to view the first 8 episodes then when I tried to view the 9 episode and the rest of the episodes I was unable to view them, the ones that I was able to view the names turned blue and the rest of the episodes names are in black, I thought it was my computer so I tried the web site on another computer and the same thing happened, I hope you can fix this and please let me know thru my e-mail address. I really want to be able to view the rest of those episodes.

Thank You Very Much

@FTHOOD1949!: Welcome to the Teahouse. Episodes 9 and onwards do not have articles, hence why they're not linked. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:41, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Or, to expand on Tenryuu's answer, FTHOOD1949!: so far none of the thousands of volunteer editors have written articles about those episodes. This might be because somebody tried but concluded that suitable sources do not exist to satisfy the requirements of notability for those episodes (in which case, nobody should spend any time trying) or it might be just that nobody has been sufficiently interested to write them.
If you are interested, you are welcome to try and write them youself; however, I would warn that writing a new article is a very challenging task for new editors, and I would advise you not to try until you have been actively editing for at least a few weeks, and have learnt about verifiability and referencing. Then, when you feel you're ready, you can read your first article. ColinFine (talk) 22:02, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Different dates of birth

I'm working on Jared Sidney Torrance's article which has very few citations. It lists his DOB as August 3, 1853 with no citation. I've found some sources for 1853 and others for 1852. A monument erected by the Torrance Historical Society Museum states 1852 - 1921 but his tombstone says 1853. Since there are reputable sources for both dates, what would be the best way to indicate this? Any biographical articles with similarly differing DOBs I could refer to and copy the format? Rourensu (talk) 20:08, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Rourensu See Balak Singh and WP:THISORTHAT. I wouldn't include the dates in an infobox (if you decide to add one, list it as disputed), but rather add a brief mention of the conflict under Southern California. Sincerely, Novo Tape (She/Her) 21:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Moving from IP editing to registered user, and sockpuppet policy

Hello all. I could not find a straight answer to this question so I will ask here: Would it violate Misplaced Pages's sockpuppet policy if I made a named account after editing from this IP? I find that my edits are often treated as "second-class" because I choose to edit through an IP instead of a registered account. I am however worried that because I am involved in a content dispute that my making a registered account would trigger accusations of sockpuppetry. Thanks in advance for any responses. 47.219.237.179 (talk) 21:19, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

It would NOT be sockpuppetry. Many of us started by using an IP and later moved to a named account. I guess using both an IP and a named account simultaneously would be, but I presume you'd give up using the IP. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:22, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
No, you would not be considered a sock. It is possibel that an editor will accuse you of being a sock due to a high knowledge of Misplaced Pages for a new account. If so, you can always explain you were formerly an IP and, if you wish, link to your IP. Sincerely, Novo Tape (She/Her) 21:23, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Speaking as a checkuser and former SPI clerk, it is generally acceptable for an unregistered editor to create an account and continue participating in the same topics, as long as you are not doing so in order to deceive editors into thinking you're two different people or trying to create the impression of false consensus, and especially not if you are evading a sanction. In your case it would be wise to publicly declare that you formerly edited as the IP but have created an account. If you didn't, the connection would be rather obvious anyway, so you might as well get ahead of it. Ivanvector (/Edits) 21:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I see, thank you (and to others who responded as well). I am wary of named users and prefer the semi-anonymity that unregistered editing affords. But if I did make an account, a talk page notice of former IP editing would be sufficient to avoid running afoul of sockpuppet rules? 47.219.237.179 (talk) 21:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, IP user. You would not be the first to choose to continue editing from an IP: there are some well-established users who do so. But in a sense, an account is more anonymous, in that anybody can look up who assigned an IP and where in the world it is. And account names do not have to be your real name: many accounts (perhaps most) are obvious pseudonyms. But it's your choice. ColinFine (talk) 22:06, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
I understand how IP editing and anonymity work on this site. I don't care if people see my IP address and geolocate me. I am more an advocate of anonymous editing and anonymous forum-style discussion. In my view, tying edits to fixed usernames is an invitation to involve ego in decision-making, and leads to to certain users claiming "ownership" over articles if they have a long history of editing it. If I made a registered account, it would be solely to take advantage of the technical benefits afforded to registered users, and so my edits are not dismissed out-of-hand as IP edits, as they sometimes are. 47.219.237.179 (talk) 22:16, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
FWIW, I have been editing on Misplaced Pages for more than 20 years, and have never created an account, in part because I think edits should be evaluated purely on their own merits, not in the light of whether their editor has a 'reputation.' (I have other personal reasons, of no relevance to anyone else.) I do use a 'pseudo-signature', purely to maintain continuity in conversations should my IP, once upon a time static but for many years dynamic (blame my ISP) change in mid-dialogue.
In those 20+ years I have hardly ever fallen foul of 'anti-IP prejudice', and on the rare occasions when I have, other editors have pushed back against it. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 03:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
I'm not going to claim gross prejudice, but in a recent content dispute, users frequently cited the term "IP edits" in a seemingly pejorative manner, implying that the edits by myself and others under IPs are somehow less valid by that fact alone, or that edits are suspect purely by virtue of being from an unregistered user. Then said users got the article protected.
And how do you deal with autoconfirmed protection? Do you just accept that you're unable to participate in the many thousands of protected articles, many of which are of high importance? Yes I understand that you can request edits, but that seems like an extremely tedious route, and is dependent upon the whims of other editors. 47.219.237.179 (talk) 04:00, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
I guess it is true that if I wanted to push[REDACTED] explicitly in a pro-Nazi direction then I would think edit requests were a real bummer. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 02:39, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Problem creating new draft page with Article Wizard

Hi, and 'Help!' - For 9 years we have run a succesful Educational Project for students at LIUC, Italy. There is a current course page and dashboard at: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/LIUC_-_Universit%C3%A0_Cattaneo/Digital_Technology_(Autumn_2023)/home. Two student teams have had an issue creating new draft pages using Article Wizard. The draft pages are created by Article Wizard, but:

  • do not appear under their Username contributions
  • do not contain the draft markup for the draft banner (Articles for creation (AfC) submission) and for the references footer sections

An example is at: https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Padiglione_Asplund

Other teams have used the same tool to succesfully create 'normal' draft pages containing both the above elements. Can anyone advise on why two different formats for new draft pages are being created by the same Article Wizard tool, and how we can fix this? Many thanks. Limelightangel (talk) 21:22, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Limelightangel: Draft:Padiglione Asplund was created, with just one word of content, by LIUC7michelle05, who blanked it four minutes later. This is confirmed in LIUC7michelle05's "User contributions".   Maproom (talk) 21:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Newbie, confused about recent contribution

Hey Wikipedians--- wanted to reach out and share an experience I recently had while working on the Jasper AI Misplaced Pages page. I'm seeking guidance and insights on how to navigate this situation

Some time ago I dedicated an amount of time and effort to create a Misplaced Pages page, for Jasper AI. Throughout the process my focus was on adhering to Wikipedias citation standards and ensuring the subjects notability. (See my talk page)

Initially my submission was moved to the draft space due to concerns about citations despite my efforts in citing sources. However an administrator later approved the article moving it into the space. (The editor who flagged it initally has changed their reasoning a few times. (No disrespect to them)

Recently the same editor who initially moved the article to draft space has raised concerns regarding its notability. Flagged it for deletion. This was a bit disheartening for me since I invested time and effort into acquiring citations and creating a page that I believed met all the necessary guidelines.

My main concern lies in the inconsistency of the process. Feeling a bit perplexed, and disheartened. While I fully understand and respect Wikipedias commitment to maintaining standards I am seeking clarity, on how best to ensure that my work aligns with these standards without feeling like its a shifting goalpost.

I know I am a noob, but what perplexes me is that by the interpretation of the editors view on WP guidelines, a great portion of pages should be deleted. I want to help and add value here.

I am hoping to receiving feedback. I am willing to make any necessary changes to the Jasper AI page. My intention is to contribute to the Misplaced Pages community so any advice or assistance, in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Please forgive me if I am an idiot for doing things wrong, I really want to help and I understand spending time contributing doesnt matter If I am making mistakes.

**PS, I figured established pages would be a good reference for creating pages, but it seems that even established pages aren't great sources**

(Apologies for the novel length post) Comintell (talk) 02:04, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Different users take different views. (Whether or not either of the involved users here is an admin is neither here nor there; they are not doing admin tasks). Likely one looked at the number of references & thought they looked convincing. The other looked in depth at each reference and thought they were not good. The deletion discussion provides all of the information required on the reason for the deletion nomination. It cites the relevant WP policies, and analysis the references in great depth. I would, if I were you, be looking for additional WP:RS for the article, because right now a compelling case for its deletion is being made. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:23, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. Yes I would be a fool to contribute time, and be doing things wrong. Thank you. Comintell (talk) 02:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, @Comintell:, and thank you for your efforts. And thank you for taking Misplaced Pages's standards seriously (they are here for a reason, after all). We all know the pain and frustration of putting in the time to create an article, only to have it deleted; I feel for you. One of the hardest lessons I found was before even starting to write the article, to assess whether the available sources were enough to satisfy the ""golden rule": is there enough in-depth coverage in reliable, independent sources to show that the subject is "notable" (in Misplaced Pages's sense of the term). It isn't about how well you wrote the article, or documented the sources - it isn't about anything you did, it is about the subject. All you can do is like Tagishsimon says, search for some more sources that meet those criteria and bring them to the attention of the deletion discussion. If they are good, the article will stay. If not, we hope you will stick around and continue to contribute to Misplaced Pages because we need more good editors like you!--Gronk Oz (talk) 03:10, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Very great input. Thank you, and I suppose I could have added/found more sources. I just updated the page, so we will see. Thank you both Comintell (talk) 04:04, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
I am the "editor" being referred to. The advice provided by other editors above is good advice. I will emphasize what was said above as well. I understand that can be difficult to have a page you created wind up at a deletion discussion. I have been in the same situation and from experience it is best to review the policies and guidelines and make your argument in the deletion discussion. I would add that you should transfer your talk page comments from Talk:Jasper AI that you placed under the heading "Proof of Notability: Additional reading tab" and move that to the deletion discussion page. I know we started out discussing there, but it would be best to make the arguments in the deletion discussion so that other editors can evaluate and we can come to a WP:CONSENSUS. Having everything in one location is better so that no one has to jump to different pages. --CNMall41 (talk) 04:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @CNMall41 Comintell (talk) 04:37, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
No problem. Sorry we are at this point as I know it sucks. For help, you can refer to WP:ORGCRIT for the sourcing needed to show notability. You can also assess each one using WP:SIRS to refute any other references you feel I got wrong in my assessment. Cheers! --CNMall41 (talk) 04:47, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

How can I split the cast into 3 separate lists?

I've added all the credited cast to Yanks.

First the "main" cast are listed, then the "American" cast are listed, and then the "British" cast are listed.

So I'm trying to separate them into columns side by side, or if that looks weird, then on top of each other, as right now 2 of the American cast appear just above the British cast.

I've just attempted to separate them by copying the info on the column which was already there, to make 3 columns, however you couldn't really tell where the columns ended and started on the right hand side. Danstarr69 (talk) 03:03, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@Danstarr69: Welcome to the Teahouse! I changed the columns to use {{col begin}}, {{col break}}, and {{col end}}. How the columns will appear to a user will depend on their browser width, font size, and other factors. Feel free to revert my edit if it's not to your liking. You may want to use a table instead. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:23, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Has Table of Contents moved?

I remember seeing the Table of Contents within the article (not as a side bar). Now I only see it when I click on the 3 horizontal bars with 3 dots. Is there a way to see the ToC within the article? Also, when I click the ToC icon, the 1st line is Contents. Sometimes next to it is a link that says "move to sidebar". At least that link was there a few minutes ago. Now it's not there. How an I make it come back? Sunandshade (talk) 06:54, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Sunandshade – you might be thinking of the old default skin on Misplaced Pages, Vector 2010, which was replaced as the default skin back in January by Vector 2022. If you want to go back to it, you can do so in your preferences. Tollens (talk) 07:00, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
That was it! Thanks. I like 2010 much better. Now I can see the ToC in the article. It also removes the annoying ToC icon that would always cover some of the text I was trying to read. Always had to scroll a couple of line to see it. I appreciate your help. Sunandshade (talk) 07:10, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Also, if I ever decide to use skin 2022, how do I get the ToC to be in the sidebar? I saw the link to do this in some articles, but now it's not there. Sunandshade (talk) 07:24, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
When you click on the to display the ToC, at the top of the dropdown menu is "Move to sidebar", which will do what you want it to do. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:39, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
The top of the dropdown has "Contents". Next to that used to be the link to "move to sidebar" but that link no longer appears. How do I get the link back? Sunandshade (talk) 07:49, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
If "move to sidebar" doesn't appear, that is generally because the screen's layout isn't wide enough to show you the toolbar in the pinned state. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
That really helps. Turns out if the window is more than 1/2" from the edge, it's not wide enough. But with the wider window, now I can see it. Thanks. Sunandshade (talk) 18:14, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 07:12, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Nothing. Ka-ru, per their user talk, retired two days ago (You said at Talk:Saiō#Requested move 13 November 2023: I believe we are experiencing canvassing by Ka-ru, with a lot of messages being posted almost everywhere advocating against this move). Makes the whole thing moot.
I'd also like to note for the record that one should usually link diffs, as I see no such messages in Ka-ru's contribs when I filter out edits to the mainspace. But not here: the Teahouse not the place to resolve disputes or report behavioral problems. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 14:39, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@Rotideypoc41352 where should I report this? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 18:22, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
First, it is ideal to know "whether they are exactly doing it" before declaring that there is a problem. Second, Misplaced Pages:Canvassing is fairly clear on Misplaced Pages:Canvassing#How to respond to canvassing. All roads lead back to ANI, where a) you already have a monster thread b) where you reported someone else for some non-notable supposed infraction a few days, before backing off from that. WP does not need additional manufactured drama. Please give it a rest and maybe go on that wikibreak you've been talking about. We'll hold the fort whilst you're away, promise. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:41, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@Immanuelle: I had a look at Talk:Saiō, and I can't anything that is even remotely indicative of canvassing. I suggest you take heed of Tagishsimon's advice. Polyamorph (talk) 19:30, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Guidance on Company page edits

Hello wiki community, I am trying to create a company page and it was declined. I would like to understand the feedback in detail. Which of the citations are reliable and which are not reliable. I tried adding 11 citations which found to be reliable. What are the main issues you see in the content? https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Mercans_(company). Is there anyone who would like to contribute to the page? How do I invite editors to review the content and contribute? I appreciate your help in advance. Vbhavanisankar (talk) 09:10, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Vbhavanisankar. Unreferenced promotional fluff like These platforms empower businesses with technology-driven HR and payroll solutions, enhancing efficiency and productivity is a violation of the core content policy, the Neutral point of view. When I read a sentence like that, I learn nothing about what sets this company apart from others, because all such companies use vapid language like that to describe themselves. Every trace of promotional corporate-speak must be removed from your draft. Cullen328 (talk) 09:31, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @Cullen328. I will edit the draft. Feel free to provide additional feedback. Is it ok to include company website link while explaining what is unique about the company. or will it be flagged as it is not a 3rd party independent citation. Vbhavanisankar (talk) 09:50, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@Vbhavanisankar: Welcome to the Teahouse. While an external link to the company is usually provided in an §External links section, it cannot be cited to establish wikinotability. Focus on finding independent, reliable sources instead. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:40, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

How to improve Wiki submission from content I've made so far?

Hello! I'm very new to adding unto[REDACTED] and I'm trying to create information about the company I work at. Is anybody available to help improve and optimise my short synopsis for Misplaced Pages?

My name is SustainableJragon, the draft Wiki article is - Draft:Sustainable Ventures. SustainableJragon (talk) 10:15, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

SustainableJragon Hello and welcome. First, you must formally declare your relationship with the company, please see the paid editing policy- this is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory. You should also read conflict of interest.
You have too many references. That may sound odd, but fewer high quality references are preferable to a large number of low quality references. I think you essentially need to start over from scratch. A Misplaced Pages article is not a place to summarize the routine activities of the company- an article must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose to say about your company, showing how it meets the special Misplaced Pages definition of a notable company. Announcements of its activities, interviews, and brief mentions do not establish notability. What are your three(only three, please) best sources that offer significant coverage of your company? 331dot (talk) 10:19, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@SustainableJragon: I concur with 331dot's assessment. In addition, I suggest reading WP:BACKWARD to understand the best way to create a new article. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:46, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Please avoid crass sentences such as "Based in London’s iconic County Hall – it overlooks the Houses of Parliament and the River Thames – ". This is an encyclopedia, not Sexy Startup Monthly. All of iconic, HoP and Thames are unnecessary, and make the article read like a cheap & desperate advert. --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
As far as I can tell from in among the buzzwords and promotional bullshit, the subject is a company that rents out office space. The mention of "valuation uplift of 2.8x at the next round of funding" suggests a WeWork-type scam. I recommend having the article rewritten from scratch, by someone who does not have a PR background. Maproom (talk) 16:02, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

one of the articles is deleted

https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Bankbazaar 171.76.83.103 (talk) 13:25, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

The article was declined, not deleted. Please resolve the issues the declining reviewer raised. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 13:38, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
See WP:NCORP and WP:CORPDEPTH. You need more than press reports on the funding of the company. Are they notable in WP terms? Probably not; they're a routine small financial company, of which there are tens of thousands around the world, few of them very notable. --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:01, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

What to do if I find a "rotten" link?

In this page: Defensive programming In this paragraph:

--

Oracle is combating legacy problems, such as old source code written without addressing concerns of SQL injection and privilege escalation, resulting in many security vulnerabilities which have taken time to fix and also generated incomplete fixes. This has given rise to heavy criticism from security experts such as David Litchfield, Alexander Kornbrust, Cesar Cerrudo. An additional criticism is that default installations (largely a legacy from old versions) are not aligned with their own security recommendations, such as Oracle Database Security Checklist, which is hard to amend as many applications require the less secure legacy settings to function correctly."

--

The "Oracle Database Security Checklist" link is a 404 not found page. I checked for the page using the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archive, but it apparently wasn't archived because all attempts were unsuccessful at crawl time.

What should be done in this case, and in other similar cases? Should the link be removed, or should it be discussed in the talk page first to find an archived copy?

Avocadoy72 (talk) 14:59, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

There should not be an inline external link in the body of the article. Such links can be removed, fullstop. You can consider whether the link should be converted into a reference, or into an external link listed at the foot of the article, but IMO you are under no obligation to do so. Especially, you are under no obligatoin to chase down a new URI for a 404. Where a link in the external links section is broken, you can choose whether to remove it, or to try to replace it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:02, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
I've removed the link. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:04, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

In Monobook skin, any Icon for watched/unwatched?

Hi, Previously I was on Timeless skin & recently switched back to Monobook. For Watched pages in Monobook there was a little "Star" icon - clear for Unwatched & hilight (darker) for Watched. Before writing here I've looked & looked within Monobook & cannot find anything except to click on Page on menu to show "Watched" or "Unwatched". So the question, any Icon in Monobook for Watched/Unwatched? JoeNMLC (talk) 19:04, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@JoeNMLC: Hi. Are you asking for mobile, or desktop view? On desktop, I get all options on top (including "move", and "swap") of page. That includes "watch", and "unwatch". The screenshot I provided is very old though. But I still use the monobook, and get same options. There are high chances that I might have customised it, but I can't recall now. —usernamekiran (talk) 21:19, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@usernamekiran - Yes, it must be custom as I did search MediaWiki:Monobook.css, User:JoeNMLC/monobook.css, and Archive searches, but unable to find anything about "Watchlist". JoeNMLC (talk) 23:58, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@JoeNMLC: no, it's not the custom watchlist. I meant the settings for all the options being visible without clicking anything. I will look into it tomorrow when I'm on computer. —usernamekiran (talk) 00:05, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question

Where can I see examples, including format specifics, on how to add notability references to a person's Misplaced Pages article draft ? Lumelsky (talk) 19:09, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

You can see examples on most biography pages. Help is available at Help:Referencing for beginners, Help:Referencing for beginners without using templates or Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, Lumelsky, and welcome to the Teahouse.
If you are talking about Draft:Vladimir J. Lumelsky, I would advise that it is not worth doing this. To use a house-building analogy, Shurm13 has put up a house without any foundations and without surveying the site, and you are asking how to carry out underpinning so that it won't fall down. This is a difficult and costly process, which will probably require dismantling quite a lot of the house and rebuilding it again - if it works at all.
A much better idea would be to abandon the draft which has been written BACKWARDS, and start again.. Start by finding sources that meet the criteria in golden rule - that is, they need to be reliably published, wholly unconnected with Lumelsky (not written, informed, or published, by him, his colleagues, his institutions, his company, or his associates - so not one of the current references is acceptable) and contain significant coverage of him. If several such sources can be found, then an article can be written, based on what those sources say, not on anything else.
The additional question is, what is your connection with Vladimir Lumelsky? Are you him? If so, please be aware that autobiography is strongly discouraged. I appreciate that what you are doing is trying to rescue a draft that appears to have been made by somebody else, rather than writing about yourself directly; and on a draft, that is probably acceptable. But please familiarize yourself with advice on editing with a conflict of interest. ColinFine (talk) 23:19, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

About my article

Hi, first of all thank you for taking time to read my article.

I wish to know what is the best procedure to write an article and get it published?

Thanks,

Dan Navajones (talk) 19:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Dan: make sure you cite enough reliable sources (WP:RS) to meet general notability guidelines (WP:GNG). Draft is Draft:Daniel Gwilym Jones. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:29, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Ideal, too, to have references for all of the paragraphs, not just the first paragraph. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:31, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
And see also WP:YFA --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:32, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Navajones (talk) 19:33, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Help with article

I need help with an article: Draft:Susan_Ericksen. It has been rejected multiple times, mostly due to not enough reliable sources and language that sounded overly promotional. Both of these I agreed with and have attempted to resolve. The last editor suggested that I add a COI statement because I interviewed this person on a podcast. Not sure if I did the COI correctly though. I wanted to get some feedback before I attempt to put it into the approval queue again. AJRyan6of7 (talk) 21:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@AJRyan6of7: The subject passes WP:GNG, the article is neutral and well sourced. I have promoted it as Susan Ericksen. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:27, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much! If it's not too much to ask, could you also look at Draft:David_Colacci? The two are married, and much of the info is the same. AJRyan6of7 (talk) 21:29, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
AJRyan6of7 I would gently note that there is a difference between "rejection" and "declined" in the draft submission process; the former means that a draft may not be resubmitted, the latter means it may be resubmitted. 331dot (talk) 21:31, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, poor choice of words. Thanks for the correction. AJRyan6of7 (talk) 21:36, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@AJRyan6of7: Promoted on the same basis. Check the categories; I stole some from his wife, but there maybe more required. Do you want to put a Connected Contributor notice on the talk page of this one? That on Susan's was good. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:35, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I have no problem putting a Connected Contributor notice there. Thank You! AJRyan6of7 (talk) 21:37, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Help with Sourcing Marriage and Children

Hello editors, I am working to update the article on behalf of Jay Sures as part of my work with Executive Writing. I am trying to update the article to note that he is married to Linda Nyvltova and that he has three children. However, the only third-party source I have is The New York Post, which is not considered a reliable source for Misplaced Pages. Is there any other way I could verify his marriage and children that would allow for his article to include this information?

EWChristine (talk) 21:47, 15 November 2023 (UTC)EWChristine (talk) 21:47, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @EWChristine. Firstly, thanks for the declaration about your paid editing on your user page but you must follow the proper declaration template at WP:PAID. Failure to do this is a breach of Wikimedia Terms and Conditions. You must also declare your conflict of interest with the article(s) you are editing, follow the instructions at WP:COI. We really discourage conflict of interest editing and scrutinise paid editing to a much higher standard.
That said, thank you for asking your question and clearly being willing to learn our policies and guidelines. The New York Post can be used to source basic biographic facts, such as family life. We would generally prefer a better published source, but if there are none you could use the NYP or simply not include that information in the article. Qcne (talk) 21:51, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Citation question

Longtime editor here with a basic citation question. I recently came across a news clipping that I wasn't sure how to properly cite with the {{cite news}}. Newspaper #1 published an article from Newspaper #2. Using the template, I assumed I would put #1 in the |work= parameter and #2 under |publisher=. However, the template documentation says that publisher is not meant to be used for "the name of a work (e.g. a website, book, encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine, journal, etc.)". Plus you cannot italicize the publisher field. Ideas on how I should work around this? Thanks in advance! --GoneIn60 (talk) 00:02, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi GoneIn60. I think you could just cite the original publication and then use the |via= parameter to indicate the host publication's name. You might also be able to use the |agency= paramenter for the original publication's name and then format the citation for the host publication. What you're describing seems to be somehat similar to Template:Cite news#Examples #5. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:40, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
I've had this same problem and just ignored Newspaper #2. You could use |agency= if you're especially concerned about the original attribution, but the resulting template format looks kinda weird, like "Vancouver Sun. Los Angeles Times." (in my case). You can also always add a lil note after the citation template but before the closing ref tag, like "Originally published date in Newspaper #2." Folly Mox (talk) 01:36, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Insulting WI editor

What should one do about an unbelievably insulting WI editor who blocked (reverted) a number of entries put up in Misplaced Pages that contributes to the scholarship on various significant writers. The story: I am professor, and I managed to get some of the leading scholars in the world (over thirty of them, many of them endowed professors) to provide original, brand new critical commentary on 35 Romantic-era poets (like Coleridge, Keats, Wordsworth). These were then fashioned into a terrific scholarly website hosted by my university ("Then & Now: Romantic-Era Poets in the Encyclopedia Britannica"). The WI editor ("Billinghurst") reverted all these, saying that it was "vanity" site, saying that these were "boutique" entries, and then said it was "paid editing" (which of course it isn't), and then said I had a "conflict of interest" because I was the editor of the site. He/she then suggested I must be a very bad professor. This is all a little nuts, imo. What is the best route to take? Gkblank (talk) 00:03, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

You do have a conflict of interest as Misplaced Pages defines it. The best route to take is the one suggested by the guidelines for editing with a conflict of interest - do not attempt to add the links yourself. Instead, mention them on the talk pages associated with the relevant articles for consideration by unaffiliated editors. MrOllie (talk) 00:08, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
information Note: This appears to stem from these two threads on Gkblank's talk page and Billinghurst's talk page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:12, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Useful as it is to link to the discussions, the situation stems from Gkblank's COI editing. I concur with MrOllie's advice, which is that Gkblank should not be adding links. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:17, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Please explain why links cannot be made to fully legitimate and relevant academic/scholarly articles and essays or to academic sites/scholarly sites? This happens all over on Misplaced Pages. Thanks for your help. Gkblank (talk) 02:32, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
They can. But they should be made by uninvolved editors. You are by your own admission the professor who commissioned the site. You have a conflict of interest. You have been pointed to WP:COI which advises you not to edit where you have a COI. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:38, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

I want to make a made-up anime in my sandbox.

So, I want to help new users at the wiki to help how diffrent pages work. I want to make a fictional anime to help some new users to help how those pages work. But I need some sources. Should I use real ones or make them up, but I want to make a made-up anime sandbox to help a new user for an anime page. Is it ok? DorkLore (talk) 00:25, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

I doubt that you know enought about[REDACTED] to help. For instance, the image you uploaded is almost certainly a copyright violation. That is not a good way to start. I make the suggestion that you should spend some months getting more familiar with wikipedia, before trying to help anyone. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:30, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Sadly, it is not okay. You should not make such a thing. Such content is not appropriate anywhere on Misplaced Pages. New users will have to receive help in some other way. —Alalch E. 00:49, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
That is not correct, Alalch E. There is no bar to users using userspace to develop help or training material; see Misplaced Pages:User pages. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:55, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
A fictional anime using fictitious references or real references used to support the fictional topic is not appropriate content because it resembles a hoax too much. —Alalch E. 01:04, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
No. That's just your opinion. It might or might not be a concept which someone could put together to deliver something useful. You do not get to say " Such content is not appropriate anywhere on Misplaced Pages" on the basis of nothing more than your feelings. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:06, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Agree to disagree. —Alalch E. 01:07, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, no. Unless you can cite a policy or guideline, you're busted, Alalch E. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:14, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
"Resembles a hoax too much". You know what policy that attaches to. New users should not be introduced to such content. They should not be taught using fictitious references and they should not be taught using real references that support something fictitious (also known as fake references). They should be taught using real references that support something real. How else would they even understand what the purpose of sourcing is? How do fictitious references and fake references teach verifiability? —Alalch E. 01:21, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
It's commonplace to use fictitious examples in training materials. Here's Help:Referencing for beginners#cite ref-1, a fictitious reference on Help:Referencing for beginners. Please just stop, Alalch E. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:30, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't agree that your counterexample is valid, and I've already said agree to disagree. I do not want to prolong this. Ultimately, this is a good example to our new users coming to this page how disagreements are possible in a variety of environments, and how they're not a big deal. —Alalch E. 01:35, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
