2024 (MMXXIV) was a leap year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2024th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 24th year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 5th year of the 2020s decade.

Calendar year

The year so far has witnessed the continuation of major conflicts including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Israel–Hamas war, the Myanmar civil war, and the war in Sudan. With over 70 national elections being held throughout the year, 2024 is expected to be an uncommonly active year in elections, with seven of the ten most populous countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Russia, India, Mexico, Indonesia, and the United States), the United Kingdom, and the European Union expected to hold elections in this year. Artificial intelligence is expected to influence and sway voters ahead of elections, increasing the risks of political disinformation and democratic backsliding across the world.
