Valvettithurai or VVT is a small coastal village on the northeast coast of the Jaffna Peninsula in Sri Lanka's north. Its original name is Valvettithurai (val-vet-ti-thu-rai). The toponymic origin of this name is believed to be from Vaeli-Vaeti-thora, where 'Vaeli' in Sinhala means 'sand', and 'vaeti' means 'approach road'. The word 'thora' is related to the Sanskrit 'Thitha' and means a 'portal' to the sea (the name is found in the Dutch East India company records). It was here the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was born. The population is Catholic or Hindu. The main industry is farming and fishing. The main industry before the start of the Sri Lankan Civil War was smuggling in contraband and illegal Tamil immigrants into Sri Lanka from India.
The town is near the river called Thondaman Aru. This is named after Karunagaran Thondaman, a Chola minister who came to Sri Lanka to procure salt. The mouth of the river has the famous Skanda temple called Selva Sannithy built in the 16th century. It has a spiritual connection with the southern most holiest place in Sri Lanka called Kataragama Temple.
