Natural disaster in the United Kingdom
In 2025, the United Kingdom experienced flooding. In early January, severe rainfall caused floods across Greater Manchester.
January
Heavy rainfall brought floods to parts of England and Wales on New Year's Day, prompting severe weather warnings to be issued across the country. This led 137 flood warnings being issued by the Environment Agency in England, Scotland and Wales, with extensive flooding affecting parts of North West England, especially Greater Manchester. A major incident was declared by Greater Manchester Police in response to flooding across Bolton, Didsbury, Harpurhey, Stalybridge, Stockport and Wigan, as well as parts of Cheshire and Lancashire.
The heavy rainfall caused unprecedented levels of water to overwhelm waterways, with numerous rivers reaching record levels and canals bursting their banks. Record water levels were reported on the River Mersey in Stockport and the River Tame in Tameside, whilst city centre canals overflowed. The Bridgewater Canal's banks collapsed in Dunham Massey, prompting the closure of the M56 motorway and evacuations as surrounding areas were flooded. Three people were rescued from a car submerged in floodwater in Warrington. In Stockport, 400 people were evacuated from flooded flats at Meadow Mill after being trapped without electricity or water, and in Didsbury 500 more were evacuated from a hotel housing asylum seekers. The Sankey Canal in St Helens also burst its banks, flooding streets and houses in Haydock. The M60 motorway was also closed and homes were flooded in Broadbottom and Cheadle, Ormskirk and Ribchester. Travel disruption included train cancellations from Manchester Airport to the city's stations, Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street, and Liverpool and Manchester to Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
