- Thomas K. Cullerton (born 1966), is a Federal Whistleblower, a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran, and a Honorably Discharged Conscientious Objector to the Gulf War.
Federal Whistleblower
Cullerton was born in Elmhurst, Illinois and in 1988 enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, and served aboard the USCGC Dependable where he became disillusioned with the changing mission of the service after serving in the Gulf of Mexico during the United States invasion of Panama in 1989. In 1990, he filed for a 1-0 Conscientious Objector status, an application that is for a sailor who is sincerely opposed, because of religious or deeply held moral or ethical (not political, philosophical or sociological) beliefs to participating in war in any form. In March of 1990, Cullerton was attacked, beaten and shackled by his shipmates after his conscientious objection application story was published in The News Herald (Panama City).
In September 1990, Cullerton was the first and only U.S. military servicemember to receive a Honorable Discharge for Conscientious Objection during both Gulf Wars.. in November 1990, another article by Cullerton entitled "Mission Imposter" was published in the Orlando Sentinel.
Federal Whistleblower
From 2015-2019, Cullerton served at Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences for the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, and was the Marketing Director of the Armed Services Blood Program at Defense Health Agency headquarters. From 2022-2023, Cullerton became a federal whistleblower at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs due to financial fraud, waste and abuse he discovered. From 2022-Present, Cullerton serves at the United States Department of Agriculture, United States Forest Service where his confidential Hatch Act report was leaked by the agency.
