This is a list of characters from the Star Fox series of video games. They are listed in order of introduction. Template:Spoiler

Star Fox team

Main article: Star Fox team

The Star Fox team is a group of mercenaries hired by General Pepper. The team is headed by Fox McCloud, with his teammates Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. Star Fox 64 fills in the background of the team; at its founding, it was composed of James McCloud, Peppy Hare, and Pigma Dengar. In later games, Peppy retires from flight duty, and is replaced by Krystal. The team's primary aircraft is the Arwing, and the team's mothership is known as the Great Fox.

Star Fox

Fox McCloud

Main article: Fox McCloud

Fox McCloud is the main character of the Star Fox series, and leader of the Star Fox team since his father's capture. At the start of the series, Fox was young and still learning under the training of Peppy Hare, his father's friend and wingmate. Fox has since become an expert pilot, and has repeatedly brought tranquility to the Lylat System.

Falco Lombardi

File:FalcoSFA.jpg
Falco Lombardi in Star Fox Command.

An expert pilot of the Star Fox team, and a good friend of Fox, Falco Lombardi is often cocky and smart-mouthed. His first name came from the genus "Falco" for animals like a peregrine falcon.

Falco often joins and leaves the Star Fox team throughout the series of games. After Star Fox 64, Falco leaves the team, returning at the end of Star Fox Adventures. He then leaves once more at the end of Star Fox: Command, and returns once again in Star Fox Assault. Falco is seen as Fox's good friend and second in command. He is the best Arwing pilot in the team, making him very handy in battle. However, he has a tendency to not follow advice, and also likes to be late and appear at the last minute to save the day (as seen in the end of Adventures, and in several missions in Command).

In Star Fox: Command, Falco pilots the Sky Claw Arwing, which is armed with a multi-lock. In one of the game's endings, he joins Fox's son Marcus as the senior member of a new Star Fox team, apparently serving an advisory role similar to Peppy Hare in the original team. In another, he left Star Fox permanently and formed his own team with Katt Monroe and Dash Bowman named Star Falco. In a third ending, he attempts to console Fox McCloud who is distraught over Krystal leaving him by converting his and Fox's Arwings into racing machines and leaving Star Fox for the G-Zero racing circuit (a play on the F-Zero franchise).

Falco has made appearances in other games, including Super Smash Bros. Melee. He is an unlockable character that has similar moves to Fox.

Falco is voiced by Hisao Egawa in the Japanese versions of the series, Bill Johns in the English version of Star Fox 64, Ben Cullum in Star Fox Adventures and English dialogue of Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Mike Madeoy in Star Fox: Assault.

Although it is unknown if it is true, it has been stated that Falco was originally named by Shigeru Miyamoto after movie special-effects designer Carlo Rambaldi, although this was somehow corrupted to become "Lombardi".

Peppy Hare

File:Peppygeneral.jpg
Peppy Hare, as General of Corneria, in Star Fox Command.

Peppy Hare (ペッピー・ヘア Peppī Hea) was a member of the original Star Fox team, with leader James McCloud and wingmate Pigma Dengar. After Pigma's betrayal and James's capture, Peppy narrowly escaped to return to Corneria to inform Fox McCloud of his father's fate. Ever since then, Peppy became a new father figure to Fox, serving as his mentor and frequently giving Fox instructions and advice throughout the course of the game.

Before the events of Star Fox 64, Peppy and his wife Vivian had their daughter Lucy, who later became a teacher on the planet Fichina. When Peppy flew for the Star Fox team, Lucy was left in care of Vivian on Corneria. Not long after the defeat of Andross, Vivian succumbed to illness, leaving Peppy the widowed father to Lucy.

As the years went on, and the Star Fox team grew famous across the galaxy, Peppy retired from flight duty in later games of the series. Near the end of Star Fox: Assault Peppy sacrificed the Great Fox to open a passageway to the Aparoid Queen's lair to the Star Fox team. Peppy was thought to have been killed in the resulting explosion, but it was revealed that he left by means of an escape pod. Peppy was made General of the Cornerian army, when the previous General, Pepper, grew deathly ill sometime before the events of Star Fox Command. He is also playable in the game, flying the Arwing version seen in Assault.

In the original Star Fox, Peppy doesn't appear to be the senior member of the group. Instead, he seems to be around the same age as the rest of the squad. He has been voiced by Tomohisa Asō in the Japanese version of Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault, Issac Marshall in the English version of Star Fox 64, Chris Seavor in Star Fox Adventures and the English version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Henry Dardenne in the English version of Assault.

Peppy is also known for instructing users to "Do a barrel roll" "To do a barrel roll, press Z or R twice!", "Use the boost to get through" and others in Star Fox 64, the first game in the series that used voice dialogue. This became a popular internet fad.

Peppy Hare is also a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Slippy Toad

File:Slippycommand.JPG
Slippy Toad in Star Fox Command.

Slippy Toad (スリッピー・トード Surippī Tōdo) is a childhood friend of Fox, and has been flying with him for several years. Young, kind, and intelligent, Slippy serves as the inventor of the team, and would never back down from his fellow wingmates. He is hinted at being less athletic than the rest of the team, an example being in the Star Fox 64' ending, when the team runs a long distance, Slippy slowly falls behind and, in the introduction of the same game, he is seen falling behind his wingmates. Also, in Assault, in the cutscene where everybody jumps into their Arwings for launching, Slippy ends up falling head first into his ship.

Slippy is the son of Beltino Toad, the Research Director for the Cornerian Defense Forces. Slippy and Beltino invented and constructed many inventions for the team, including the Blue Marine. In the gap between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures, Slippy and his father briefly designed aircraft for Cornerian defense forces.

After the Aparoid race was destroyed in Star Fox: Assault, Slippy left the Star Fox team to pursue a relationship with his newfound love. However, when Fox needs backup, Slippy is happy to come to his assistance again. He pilots the Bullfrog Arwing, which has Plasma Lasers and high shielding, and is the only ship in the game able to carry up to three Nova Bombs, but has no lock and has only two boost bars.

Slippy made a brief cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee, assisting Fox in an Event Match. He also created a cloaking device for Fox and Falco for a mission in the game.

He is voiced by Kyouko Tonguu in the Japanese version of the series, Lyssa Browne in the English version of Star Fox 64, Chris Seavor in Star Fox Adventures and Mike McAuliffe in Star Fox Assault. According to sources such as the UK nintendo magazine, ONM, due to Slippy's high-pitched voice acting in all Starfox games, Slippy has ended up as one of the most hated videogame characters in videogaming.

Star Fox 2

Fay

Fay is a female poodle from Corneria appearing in the unreleased Star Fox 2. She pilots an Intercepter style of Arwing, one that is lacking in armor, but is much faster (both in terms of speed and firepower) than the standard models. As the game progresses, however, the acquisition of a Super Shield power-up is possible to make up for this defeciency in armor.

Miyu

Miyu is a female lynx, said to be somewhat of a tomboy, who is also a new member of the Star Fox team in Star Fox 2. She, like Fay, pilots the faster Interceptor model of Arwing. Also like Fay, Miyu has been removed from canon when Star Fox 2 went unreleased.

ROB 64

File:Rob Star Fox.jpg
ROB 64 as he appeared in Star Fox: Assault

ROB 64 is the robotic operator of the Great Fox mothership. In the Japanese version of the series, he is called NUS 064. "NUS" stands for "Nintendo Ultra Sixty-four," the original name of the Nintendo 64 system, and is part of the serial number of all N64 components: the controller, for example, is NUS-005.

ROB's name is a reference to the NES accessory R.O.B., to which he bears a more than passing resemblance. The 64 is derived from the console of his first appearance, the Nintendo 64.

ROB has the ability to completely control the Great Fox, technically making the ship fully autonomous. It is also networked to the ship's main computers, allowing ROB to process any information requested by the Star Fox team. ROB can also use the ship's transfer device to send vehicles and items to Star Fox team members in the field.

ROB was nearly destroyed in Star Fox: Assault when Peppy Hare crashed the Great Fox into the shield protecting the entrance to the Aparoid Queen's lair, but Peppy and ROB managed to use an escape pod before the ship was destroyed.

ROB returns in Star Fox Command, piloting the new version of the Great Fox in the overworld-map mode, and also giving some advice to Fox and the other characters during the missions. On some paths in the game, ROB joins Star Wolf when no "hero" character is around to play as.

ROB is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi in the Japanese version of Star Fox 64 and Yusuke Numata in the Japanese version of Star Fox: Assault. He is voiced by Dex Manley in the English version of Assault.

Interestingly enough, ROB seems to have changing personalities. In Star Fox 64, ROB only serves to relay information to the pilots, such as "Location confirmed. Sending supplies." Or "Great Fox will cover you." He only speaks when absolutely necessary, and is very analytical.

In Starfox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet, ROB takes on a more human attitude, as he speaks more as if he were an actual person, and not just a robot.

In Starfox Assault, he returns to his analytical personality by rarely speaking unless commands are to be given.

Finally, in his latest appearance, Starfox: Command, he again becomes more humanoid, even uttering sarcastic remarks. For instance, when Great Fox is destroyed, ROB says, "Goodbye cruel world." He even has veiled feelings for Lucy Hare, when he remarks to her that he'd do anything for her.

Krystal

File:Krystalcommand.JPG
Krystal in Star Fox Command.

Krystal is the sole survivor of her doomed home planet, Cerinia. She made her first appearance in the series in Star Fox Adventures, where in search of answers to her planet's destruction, she comes across a distress signal from the planet Sauria (Dinosaur Planet).

Krystal was originally designed to be a main character of Dinosaur Planet before Nintendo turned the project into a Star Fox title. Her original design was that of a 16-year-old orphaned feline, who was raised by a wizard named Randorn. When Fox became the main character of Adventures, Krystal was redesigned into her present form as a 19-year-old orphaned vixen, and her role in the game became that of a damsel in distress

Krystal's past is shrouded in mystery. In Adventures, she carries with her a powerful staff capable of shooting energy blasts (among other abilities), which soon falls into Fox McCloud's hands. Without her staff, however, Krystal is capable of telepathic powers, including the ability to sense thought patterns from others, which is used in Star Fox: Assault, and in her dialogue in Star Fox Command.

Fox allowed Krystal to become a full-time member of the Star Fox team, and the two later pledged that they would never be without each other.

In the prologue of Star Fox Command, it is stated that Fox was worried about Krystal's safety, and asked her to leave the team. Heartbroken, Krystal ran away, and nobody knew what became of her for a long time. Depending on the route the player takes, she reappears as either a member of Star Wolf (where she has begun a relationship with Panther) or the Cornerian Army. In the game, in some missions she pilots a Cornerian Fighter (similar to Bill Grey's) or the Cloud Runner, named and designed after one of the Sauria Tribes.

In one briefing in Star Fox Command, Krystal paused before talking to Fox over the communication link. It is unknown if she was still angry at Fox or relieved to see him.

In three of the endings of Star Fox Command, Krystal forgives Fox and goes back to him. The second one shows her marrying Fox and having a son named Marcus, who later forms a new Star Fox team when he grows up. The default ending shows her rejoining Star Fox, but after a few months, she leaves once again to be with Panther in Star Wolf. In the Star Wolf Returns ending, she is labeled as a traitor for leaving Fox, and eventually, unable to face her mistakes, she leaves and changes her name to Kursed, becoming a bounty hunter (eventually encountering Fox on planet Kew, yet he does not recognize her).

In the English version of the series, Krystal has a English accent and is voiced by Estelle Ellis in Adventures, and Alesia Glidewell in Assault. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Aya Hara.

Star Wolf team

Main article: Star Wolf (Star Fox)

In Star Fox 64, Star Wolf is a team of fighters hired by Andross to destroy the Star Fox team. They have since been working on their own as a team rivaling 'Star Fox. Their primary aircraft is the Wolfen.

Star Fox 2

Wolf O'Donnell

File:StarwolfSFA.jpg
Wolf O'Donnell in Star Fox: Assault.

Wolf O'Donnell, sometimes called Lord O'Donnell, is the leader of Star Wolf, and rival of Fox.

Fox and Wolf were enemies sometime before Star Fox 64 took place; it has been suggested in the comic adaptation of Star Fox 64 that Wolf was involved with the death of James McCloud - Fox's father. When Wolf's team was hired to take down Star Fox, Wolf wanted nothing but to fulfill Andross's orders and to kill Fox. The Star Wolf team ultimately failed their mission, causing Wolf to seek revenge for his own personal reasons.

Since Star Fox 64, his character has changed from being reminiscent of a stereotypical classy and sinister English narcissist to that of a stereotypical crude American pirate. This may symbolise the fact that he has become less villainous since Star Fox 64.

Years later, in Star Fox: Assault, Wolf plans on taking down the Star Fox team once more, but the later invasion of the Aparoids brings out a new meaning to Wolf's plans. When Fox was ambushed by Aparoids on top of the Persimmon's Building in Corneria City, Wolf flew in to his rescue. However, he claims the only reason he did so was to kill Fox off himself later. It was at this point that Wolf told Fox "Don't hesitate. When the time comes, just act.", which got Fox through some later internal struggles. Wolf's initial pure villainy has greatly subsided since Star Fox 64 as some stories in Star Fox Command feature him and his team helping Star Fox and, the Pilot Gallery in Command states that he feels a grudging respect towards Fox, with him also expressing mild guilt after beating the Star Wolf Returns final mission, due to him cheating the Star Fox Team out of the victory. Despite this, he maintains his rivalry with and the dislike of the Star Fox Team and Fox in particular.

Wolf and his team were thought to be killed in the explosion of the Aparoid Homeworld, but were revealed to have survived in Command, still with a bounty on their heads sometime later. Several things happen depending on the route, Fox even hires Wolf to help him in one story. His ship is the only one in his team which keeps the original Wolfen design, and in the instruction booklet has been named Red Fang.

Wolf makes a minor cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the introduction sequence, where he is briefly shown fighting Fox from his Wolfen. He, although not positively, is seen in the Corneria Level as one of the ships that fly down and shoot the lasers. Leon from the F-Zero game series looks notably similar to Wolf (though it is only implied that they are the same character) but shares his name with Leon Powalski.

He is voiced by Hisao Egawa in the Japanese version of Star Fox 64 and Mahito Ōba in the Japanese version of Star Fox: Assault. In the English dub, he is voiced by Grant Goodeve.

Star Fox: Assault also marked Wolf's first playable appearance. If the player manages to beat the game not allowing any of the Star Fox members to retreat on all missons, Wolf will be unlocked playable in V.S mode. He has higher speed and health than all other characters, and is the only character able to pilot the Wolfen effectively.

Leon Powalski

File:3023320050114 233539 11 big.jpg
Leon as he appeared in Star Fox: Assault

Leon Powalski is a member of the Star Wolf team, and the only original member other than Wolf himself that has consistently stayed with the team since Star Fox 64. Leon is very stubborn and only shows respect to his co-pilots. Leon's past is unknown, but most likely he had some past rivalry with Star Fox member Falco, whom he mainly concentrates on in Star Fox 64 and bickers with in Star Fox Assault.

Leon's personality has developed slightly since Star Fox 64. He has gone from a classy, competent pilot to a crazed, ruthless killer who usually gives a deranged laugh after defeating a foe.

In Star Fox: Command, Leon's aircraft is called Rainbow Delta. It lacks a standard laser, but instead it's armed with a Wide-Type lock, which enables him to lock onto all enemies in vision range and attack all of them at once.

Leon resembles a Veiled or Yemen Chameleon.

Leon is voiced by Shinobu Satouchi in Japanese. In English, he and Panther are together voiced by David Scully. Leon's voice greatly differs between the two versions. In the Japanese version, he has a rather calm, sinister tone of voice. In the English version of Assault, he is given a high-pitched, maniacal voice, in contrast to his deep, civilized tone of voice he had in the English version of Star Fox 64.

Leon's personality in Starfox: Command is quite interesting, as beneath his killer surface, it seems that he has a soft spot for peace. When defeating the Anglar Emperor with Star Wolf, Leon rejoices, and says that he will look forward to parades with flowers and other such niceties. His soft spot is also evidenced by the soft name of his deadly aircraft: the Rainbow Delta.

Pigma Dengar

File:PigmaSFA.jpg
Pigma Dengar in Star Fox: Assault.

Pigma Dengar was once a member of both the original Star Fox team, as well as Star Wolf.

Pigma is an exceptionally greedy character and does not care who he hurts or kills so long as he ends up with a large paycheck in the end.

Although Pigma's first appearance was in the unreleased Star Fox 2, he did not make his first official appearance until Star Fox 64. Pigma was one of the original members of the first Star Fox team, headed by James McCloud. After the scientist Andross's exile to Venom, the team was sent to investigate strange activity coming from the planet. Upon their arrival, Pigma's greed caused him to commit treason against Corneria by betraying the Star Fox team to join Andross. Only Peppy Hare managed to escape. He was later hired to fly for Star Wolf, in which he focused his attacks on Peppy, his former teammate.

In Star Fox: Assault, it was revealed that Wolf O'Donnell later expelled Pigma from Star Wolf due to his incredible greed (which might explain the claw marks Pigma now has on his head). After the initial of the Aparoid invasion, he hid away in the military base on Katina (occupied by Aparoids), sending distress beacons which the Star Fox teams soon picks up. After the Katina Base is cleansed of apariods, Pigma swoops by and steals the core memory from a large Apariod, believing it will make him rich (as hinted by the Star Fox team's demands that he hand it over). In an interplanetary game of chicken, the Star Fox team invades the Sargasso hideout (where they thought Pigma usually hangs out). Just before they succeed, the Star Wolf team enters the scene. After a short dogfight, Wolf reveals that Pigma is no longer a member of Star Wolf, but his teammate, Panther, points in the direction where Pigma may be heading. The Star Fox team makes way for Fichina. Once there, they discover that Pigma has deactivated the Climate Control Center, making Fichina a snowy wasteland. Upon investigating, they also find out that Pigma is leading the Aparoids somehow. As they eliminate the Aparoids from Fichina and restore the Climate Control Center, they uncover another clue leading to the Meteo asteroid field. Meanwhile, Pigma has a nightmare about being assimilated by the Aparoids, in which he replies "Obey. .. Obey. .. No! I won't make a profit by obeying them! Obey. .. Obey. .." Once the Star Fox team gets through the Asteroid field, they finally catch up with Pigma. However, in a last ditch effort to avoid capture, Pigma ultimately undergoes assimilation. Pigma is seen being fused with a seemingly inactive Aparoid spacecraft. He is later transformed in what appears to be an enormous, Aparoid-mutilated face with the spacecraft as its hull and shielding and mechanical, tentacled arms as weapons. Eventually, the machine is destroyed by Star Fox, supposedly killing Pigma in the process.

Pigma makes a subsequent appearance in Star Fox Command. His body remains transformed in the shape of a cube-shaped puzzle box Cyborg, and he serves as a boss in Sector X and Sector Y where he is killed. Before his death, Pigma explains that he still found Star Wolf to be good friends, since he said "There were. .....allies. .once. ....I spared them. ."

As Shigeru Miyamoto states in issue 98 of Nintendo Power magazine, in the Japanese version of Star Fox 64, "Pigma speaks in the Kansai dialect of Japan. In Kansai, people end their sentences with the word 'dengar.' So, it's sort of a Japanese joke."

Pigma is voiced by Daisuke Gori in Japanese. In the English version of Star Fox: Assault, he is voiced by Lev Liberman.

Algy

Algy is a male monkey who appears as a member of Star Wolf in the unreleased Star Fox 2. He appears only on the normal and expert difficulty levels of the game, and appears to be an early version of the character Andrew Oikonny.

Star Fox 64

Andrew Oikonny

File:OikonnySFA.jpg
Andrew Oikonny in Star Fox: Assault

Andrew Oikonny, usually called only by his surname, is the nephew of Andross. In Star Fox 64, Oikonny flies with Star Wolf and primarily goes after Slippy Toad in battles against the Star Fox team. According to the official Star Fox 64 strategy guide, he is an inexperienced pilot who only flies to try to follow in Andross's footsteps. After Andross is killed, Oikonny leaves Star Wolf to avenge his uncle's death.

In Star Fox: Assault, Oikonny, referred to in the game only by his last name (except for one brief moment before his defeat at the hands of an Aparoid boss), gathers Andross's remaining troops and forms a rebellion against the Cornerian Army. The Star Fox team tracks him down to the planet Fortuna, where his ship turns into a large likeness of himself (and resembles Andross's initial form in Star Fox 64). During this battle, Oikonny is unexpectedly shot down by a large Aparoid and is thought to have been destroyed.

Oikonny appears again in Star Fox Command, having survived his encounter with the Aparoid. Instead of fighting the Anglar Empire alongside Dash, Andross's grandson, and his second cousin, he joins the Anglars and pilots the Death Crab, confronting Star Fox in Fichina City.

It is unknown if Oikonny will go back to flying with Star Wolf, since he hasn't expressed any interest in going back to his old wingmates.

In the Japanese version of Star Fox 64, he is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi. In the Japanese version of Star Fox: Assault, he is voiced by Yūsuke Numata, who also voices ROB/NUS 64, and in English, John Hugill. Like Leon, Oikonny's Japanese and English voices in Assault are very different. In the Japanese version, he has a high-pitched, somewhat crazed sounding voice, while in the English version, his voice is low-pitched and goofy sounding.

Later games

Panther

File:PantherSFA.jpg
Panther as he appeared in Star Fox: Assault.

Panther made his first appearance as the newest member of the Star Wolf team in Star Fox: Assault (taking both Pigma's and Andrew's place). His signature symbol, which is on his Wolfen, is a red rose, and in Assault, he introduces himself with the line, "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Panther. .. and all who see my rose will meet death!" His manner of speech changes between Assault and Command. In Assault, he speaks normally, but in the English version of Command, he refers to himself in the third person.

Panther is quite conceited in Assault, often embarrassing those around him (especially his teammates Wolf and Leon). He is also quite a flirt, considering himself a ladies' man. In the game, he attempts to flirt with Krystal several times, but she either ignores or outright rejects him depending on the circumstances.

Panther appears again in Star Fox Command, where he has begun a relationship with Krystal (depending on the story chosen) after she joined the Star Wolf team following her breakup with Fox. Panther pilots the Black Rose, which looks somewhat like the Wolfen II seen in Star Fox 64. It is armed with the Zapper, a powerful but slow-firing laser. It is noted that Panther's character makes a change, as it is revealed in his profile that "he whole-heartedly loves a woman who has a heart". He even agrees in Krystal returning to Fox as long as she is happy about it.

He is voiced in Japanese by Tetsu Inada, while his English voice actor is David Scully (who also voices Leon).

In Assault, Panther's last name is spelled Caroso, and when spoken by Panther, it is also pronounced this way. However, in the Pilot Gallery and the official web site for the more recent Command, his surname is Caruso (with a U). In the Japanese versions of both games, his surname is Caluroso, which is Spanish for "warm, hot, energetic, enthusiastic". The difference was caused by the fact that the letters L and R are both represented by R in Japanese

Villains

Andross

File:Andross.jpg
Andross's most common form, a floating, disembodied head and hands. This image is from Star Fox 64.

Andross, known as Andorf in Japan, is the main villain of the Star Fox series.

As explained in Star Fox Command and Star Fox 64, Andross was once a brilliant scientist working for Corneria. Although his intentions were pure and beneficial towards Corneria and the rest of the Lylat System, his lust for power drove him to the brink of madness. During one of his "bio-weapon" experiments, Andross unleashed a devastating explosion that apparently leveled a great deal of Corneria city. Fearing Andross could possibly destroy the whole planet, General Pepper of the Cornerian Army caught wind of his potential, and banished him to the planetary wasteland of Venom.

As the years progressed, Andross began building forces on Venom, as well as conducting various threatening experiments on himself. Andross soon became a twisted shell of his former self, driven by insanity. His thoughts and intentions shifted from protecting Lylat, to making it his own, to eventually destroying it and ruling a new empire under his name.

General Pepper eventually received interesting and conflicting reports of bizarre events in Venomian airspace. The general hired the Star Fox mercenary team to investigate. Soon, all three pilots (James McCloud, Peppy Hare, and Pigma Dengar) were probing Venom's skies.

When they arrived, Pigma betrayed the team and joined Andross. James and Peppy tried to escape, but only Peppy was successful. This left Peppy with the inenviable task of telling James' son, Fox, about his father's fate.

Back on Venom, Andross proclaimed himself emperor of the planet Venom and soon the entire Lylat System. With an army of mass-produced androids, bio-mechanical warriors, anthropromorphic lizards and apes, as well as hired thugs like the Star Wolf Team, Andross unleashed a blitzkrieg on his neighboring worlds.

Fox McCloud was forced to hastily step into his father's shoes and lead a new Star Fox team against Andross. With Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi at his side, Fox battled across the Lylat System to stop Andross, but in the end it was Fox alone who flew into the depths of Venom to face Andross.

Andross appears in several different forms throughout the Star Fox series, the most common of which is a giant disembodied head (accompanied by a pair of hands, except in the original Star Fox). In Star Fox 64, Andross' first form is a giant head with 2 hands. After dealing enough damage, Andross will take on his second form. On the easy path, it is a giant robotic head (a fake Andross). On the hard path, it is a giant brain with 2 disembodied eyes.

After defeating his second form, Andross initiated his final defense. He set off a time bomb intended to destroy Fox. (If the player only fought the robotic head, the bomb is then only meant to cover Andross' retreat. Otherwise, it is truly meant to kill Fox.) However, Fox is led out of the base by a being which appears to be his father, though it is unknown if it is really him, a ghost, or a vision.

Andross did not survive the destruction of his Venom base. Weak and wounded, reduced to a disembodied spirit, Andross fled to the planet Sauria (Sauria is only known as the Dinosaur Planet in Star Fox Adventures.) There he was able to enlist followers among the Sharpclaw clan of dinosaurs to keep him alive, but not much more.

For eight long years Andross tried to revive himself, failing time and time again. This was at least partially due to his mistrust of his Sharpclaw helpers, particularly their nominal leader, General Scales. Scales would happily take Andross' power for his own at the drop of a hat.

Finally, Andross found a solution. To Scales' delight, Andross gave the dinosaur all the power that Scales had long coveted. The domination of Sauria was within Scales' grasp. And Andross' price seemed simple. All he wanted was a couple of artifacts and the capture of a young blue-furred vixen named Krystal, the only survivor of the lifeless planet Cerinia.

Unknown to Scales was that Krystal had the ability to channel the long-forgotten Krazoa power. Said power was contained in the artifacts Scales was gathering for Andross as well. Unaware he was being duped, Scales succeeded in acquiring most of the Krazoa Spirits and reducing Krystal to be Fox's damsel in distress. Andross trapped Krystal, in a truly ironic fashion, inside a large crystal and sent her atop the Krazoa Palace. Andross then proceeded to steal her life-force, in order to restore his own.

Rebels to Scales' rule sent out a distress call that General Pepper did not ignore. His own troops spread thin, Pepper once again hired Star Fox to dive into the breach. Unfortunately for all concerned, team Star Fox was a pale shadow of its former self. Only Fox himself remained on active duty.

Once on the planet's surface, Fox found a helper in the form of a local named Tricky. Together the duo fought a two-animal war against General Scales and his forces. Finally, Fox and Tricky defeated Scales himself only to unveil Andross as the dinosaur's puppet master. The duo raced to release Krystal from her imprisonment atop Krazoa Palace.

They succeeded, but it seemed the damage had been done; Andross awakened. Fox quickly boarded his Arwing starfighter to battle Andross once again. Infused with the great Krazoa power, Andross had Fox on the brink of defeat until Falco appeared. Fox's old wingman rejoined the Star Fox team, not to mention the battle, and Andross was defeated once again.

Andross's legacy lives on his nephew, Andrew Oikonny, who wishes to defend his uncle and bring light to a new Lylat. Andrew, however, lacked the same mind as his uncle, and as such, he ignored the true intentions of Andross, and only desired to bring a stop to the current form of Corneria. Also, it is revealed in Star Fox Command that Andross had a grandson named Dash. Andross seems to want his grandson to carry on his legacy, because if the player fights Andross with Dash, he will respond "What are you doing?! This is my grandson I'm fighting here!" However, in the "Dash Makes a Choice" ending in Star Fox Command, Dash goes on to turn Venom into a thriving planet which soon comes to match Corneria in its environment (after much terraforming) and scientific expertise. But soon Dash starts to feel the need for power that Andross felt, and he makes a speech to all the citizens about how it's "Venom's time" and he starts a war with Corneria, just like Andross. He also starts to slightly resemble Andross in appearance as he ages through the ending.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Andross' Star Fox and Star Fox 64 forms are unlockable trophies.

General Scales

General Scales made his appearance in Star Fox Adventures as a villain of the game.

Scales' army were the SharpClaw, who carried out his orders. The SharpClaw originally wanted to be the ruling tribe of Sauria (also known as Dinosaur Planet), but were rejected and amassed an army under Scales to overpower the other tribes.

Scales, who was bent on taking control of Sauria, removed the four SpellStones that kept the planet together, causing chunks of it to break off. Scales then proceeded to take over each of the four pieces that broke off the planet.

It is revealed later that Scales carries the last of the Krazoa Spirits that Fox was looking for. When Fox was prepared to fight Scales, Andross revealed himself and forced Scales to give the spirit to Fox so he could be revived, stating that Scales was merely just a puppet figure for him. After this, Scales falls unconscious. When Fox returns to the planet after defeating Andross, he finds that the SharpClaw have liberated themselves from the General and one grunt holds up Scales' belt in victory.

His final fate is currently unconfirmed but it is hinted at that he was either killed or imprisoned by his mutinous army. When Scales fell, the life force door behind Fox opened. Whether the door opened because he fainted or died is unknown. Before Scales released his Krazoa Spirit, he said to Fox "You will regret this.", hinting that he may return in a future Star Fox game, but he has not been seen since. The only other interpretation from his last line is that he knew Andross would be revived and tried to warn Fox of the near future.

Scales' voice actor was John Silke.

General Scales along with a huge cast of other characters appeared as one of the most requested Nintendo characters in the Japanese polls for Super Smash Brothers Brawl, along side Ridley, King K. Rool, etc. Wither this indcates he might be in the game is unknown.

Aparoid Queen

The Aparoid Queen made her appearance in Star Fox: Assault.

Living inside the core of the Aparoid Homeworld, she was the leader of the Aparoid race. From within the Homeworld, the Queen ruled over the Aparoids like a queen bee over her hive; Beltino Toad determined that if the Queen could be infected with a self-destruct program, then the rest of the Aparoids would die along with her. She has the ability to emulate personalities of people who were infected, or simply people close to her enemies. She emulates Peppy, Pigma, General Pepper, James McCloud, and R.O.B during the game.

Star Fox made their way into the Queen's chamber, and infected the Queen with the self-destruct program. The program was initially ineffective, and the Queen fled into the heart of the planet. Star Fox gave chase, weakening the Queen's defenses, which allowed the program to work. After the Queen's death, the program spread throughout the Homeworld, destroying it and all the remaining Aparoids.

Emperor Anglar

Emperor Anglar is the leader of the Anglar race in Star Fox Command. Originating on Venom, he appears as a final boss for several missions, and pilots a large serpent-like creature. There is a chance that he is a general or other rank in Andross' old army, because in one of the path of the game, the emperor talks about the enemy of his Master arriving when the Star Fox team hits Venom. In some of the final missions, he becomes a very large angler fish, capable of taking the player's ship into his mouth, similar to what Andross did in Star Fox 64, and also shooting panels out of his mouth like Andross in Star Fox. His four cronies are Zako (piloting the Devil Shark), Zazan (piloting the ZaZanga 9), Zoldge (piloting the Solar Satellite) and Octoman (piloting the Octopod and who apparently refers to F-Zero's Octoman.)

Supporting characters

General Pepper

File:Generalpepper.jpg
General Pepper in Star Fox: Assault.

General Pepper was the Commander-in-chief of the Cornerian Defense Forces.

Shortly after taking office, Pepper exiled the scientist, Andross, to the nearly uninhabitable planet of Venom for conducting dangerous experiments. About five years later, Pepper noticed strange activity coming from Venom, so he hired the mercenary group Star Fox, led by James McCloud, to investigate.

When James's son, Fox, dropped out of flight academy to take his father's place in Star Fox, Pepper soon became the team's primary source for missions.

During the Aparoid Invasion in Star Fox: Assault, Pepper came close to death when aparoids had been fused to him and his flagship , which made it almost impossible for him to control his actions. Pepper as well was almost infected. At the General's command, Fox destroyed the ship with Pepper still on board. Pepper was rescued at the last second by long-time Star Fox member Peppy Hare.

As time passed, Pepper grew ill and retired his position as General of the Cornerian Army. He passed this role on to Peppy Hare. It is unknown if Pepper died, or he's still alive, although in Command, during a mission briefing, Fox states that he was confined to his sickbed, hinting that he might still be alive.

In the Japanese version of Star Fox 64, he was voiced by Daisuke Gori, who also voices Pigma Dengar and Andross and in Star Fox: Assault, he was voiced by Michihiro Ikemizu in Japanese and by Gray Eubank in English.

General Pepper's appearance and name are most likely a reference to the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band .

James McCloud

File:James Command.jpg
James McCloud as he appears in Star Fox Command

James McCloud is the father of Fox McCloud and the founder of the Star Fox team. He was betrayed by Pigma Dengar and captured by the evil Andross. Peppy Hare informed James' son about his fate.

Until Star Fox 64, Fox McCloud's father was not called "James". Some references, such as the comic adaptation published in Nintendo Power, called him Fox McCloud, Sr.

In Star Fox 64, if the player takes the route from Area 6 to Venom, James will appear only to Fox, and guides him out of Andross' exploding base. Afterwards, James's Arwing seems to disappear, leaving Fox to wonder if his father is truly alive or not.

In Star Fox: Assault, the Aparoid Queen uses James' voice in an attempt to trick Fox and the others into surrendering. This could create some controversy over the true cause of his death; until this point, it was believed that Andross killed James, but now it is uncertain whether he was killed by aparoids or Andross (or if he's still alive, but in hiding).

In Star Fox Command, James makes his first playable appearance in single-player mode in the final boss fight against the Anglar Emperor on Venom in the Dash Makes a Choice storyline. If the level is beaten quickly, the other characters, including Fox, apparently do not react to his presence, and Fox even mentions the "death" of his father. However, if the level takes 5 or more turns to complete, James will show up, and Fox will acknowledge his presence. Dash asks if something's wrong, and Falco asks if he's seeing things. Fox denies seeing anything, and focuses back on the battle at hand. James pilots the Arwing version seen in Assault, which is also piloted by Peppy.

James and Fox look very similar, although James is never seen without his black sunglasses. The two also appear to be wearing the same clothes in Star Fox 64. In Star Fox Command, James' normally red scarf is yellow. In Japanese, he is voiced by Tomohisa Aso, who also voices Peppy Hare. Connections between Peppy Hare and James McCloud don't stop at voice actors, as James uses the line "Never give up. Trust your instincts.", a line often spoken by Peppy. This could possibly be due to the fact that Peppy is relaying the things James taught him when they flew together. In Assault, he is voiced by Jim Walker, who also voices Fox.

There is a character called James McCloud in the F-Zero series. His F-Zero machine, the Little Wyvern, looks like an Arwing with the wings lopped off. It also makes a reference to his racer being a modified space fighter, as well as mentioning his wife and young son, as well as noting that James was a member of a space fighter team known as "Galaxy Dog", a play off of "Star Fox". Although he's a human, he has the same clothes and sunglasses, as well as his hair being similar in shape and color to James' ears. A reference to this is made in the final ending to Star Fox Command when Fox and Falco decide to engineer their ships into racers and enter the "G-Zero" Grand Prix, where they are supposedly a great success.

Bill Grey

Bill Grey was Fox's friend in the Cornerian Flight Academy, and appeared to help Fox in Star Fox 64.

After Fox left the academy to avenge his father's death, Bill rose through the ranks and was elected commander of the Husky and Bulldog squadrons of Corneria.

The Star Fox team meets up with him shortly on Katina to help him fight the enemy units attacking the Cornerian base. If the player finishes the stage, Bill will return briefly to assist the team in the next stage, regardless if the mission was accomplished or failed. If the player goes to Solar, Bill will appear to leave Fox some items at the beginning of the mission. If the player goes to Sector X, Bill will help in opening the doors leading to the Warp 2, so the player can go to Sector Z.

Bill makes his return in Star Fox Command, arriving to provide backup for either Fox or Falco in two of the three Katina stages. He pilots a Cornerian Fighter as he did in Star Fox 64 and is now a playable character. His appearance is quite different: his fur has gone from gray to light brown, and his black visor is now transparent blue. He also bears a Southern accent, using words like "varmint," "reckon," and "y'all".

Bill's theme music in Star Fox Command bears a striking resemblance to that from the movie Firefox. His full name is also the same name of the character played by Robert Loggia in the movie Independence Day.

In the Japanese version of Star Fox 64, he is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi, who also voiced ROB/NUS 64 and Andrew Oikonny in the same game.

Katt Monroe

File:Kattcommand.jpg
Katt Monroe, as seen in Star Fox Command.

Katt Monroe first appeared in Star Fox 64. She is a lone fighter who comes to the aid of the Cornerian Defense Force and the Star Fox team. She has a crush on Falco Lombardi, and she frequently lets him know about it. While Falco finds this annoying, he does have a certain interest in her as well.

Katt returns in Star Fox Command, though she now bears dark gray fur instead of pink, and her overall appearance is very different. She appears in missions with Falco in the Asteroid Belt and Sector X, however, they have an argument in which Falco insults her and Katt vows to never help him again, though she does say she "can't just sit and watch him from the sidelines." She also appears in one mission to assist Lucy, Krystal, and Amanda in the defense of Corneria. According to her profile in Star Fox Command, she wishes to join Star Fox to be close to Falco.

In Star Fox 64, she pilots a pink ship dubbed the Catspaw, which is a heavily modified version of a Venomian Invader class fighter. In Star Fox Command, she flies a unique craft called the Cat's Paw 2. (Labeled as the Cat's Paw MK. II in the insruction booklet.) It is armed with a "Curve" or "Arc" laser, which seems to be a single Plasma laser. The Cat's Paw 2 bears almost no resemblance to the original, and is primarily a reddish color instead of pink.

One of the nine possible endings of "Star Fox Command" shows Katt and Falco forming their own team, "Star Falco", along with Dash Bowman. Katt is seen flying a pink version of Falco's Sky Claw.

In Japanese, Katt is voiced Kyoko Tongu (also the voice of Slippy Toad). In English, she and Slippy are both voiced by Lyssa Browne.

Tricky

File:Princetricky1.jpg
Tricky in a beta version of Star Fox Adventures.

Tricky is an EarthWalker (or a protoceratops) from the planet Sauria and serves as Fox McCloud's companion in Star Fox Adventures, in which Tricky performs different tasks for Fox when fed GrubTubs (mushroom-like food). He can open small caves and act as a flamethrower, among other abilities.

During the time of Star Fox Adventures, Tricky was a prince; he is the son of the King and Queen of the EarthWalker tribe. He accompanies Fox to save his imprisoned father, who was trapped within the Walled City.

His second appearance is in Star Fox: Assault. Tricky has physically matured (now large enough for both Fox and Krystal to ride comfortably), and is now the King of the EarthWalker tribe. After Fox and Krystal save his kingdom from the Aparoids, he promises to help repair Sauria (and also embarrasses Fox by both jumping on top of him mentioning a honeymoon for him and Krystal.)

He was voiced by Kevin Bayliss in Star Fox Adventures, and Chet Morgan in Star Fox: Assault. In the Japanese version of Assault, he has a somewhat deep, teenage-sounding voice.

Tricky was possibly based on a triceratops character of the same name, appearing as a boss for the Dino Domain stage in Diddy Kong Racing, also made by Rare.

Beltino Toad

Beltino Toad is the Research Director for the Cornerian Defense Forces and is also Slippy Toad's father.

Beltino previously worked for Space Dynamics Co. Ltd. as an engineer. He and his son also created the Blue Marine vehicle that Fox used to explore the planet of Aquas in Star Fox 64.

Beltino was first mentioned in the Star Fox 64 Player's Guide, but did not make an in-game appearance until Star Fox: Assault, released eight years later.

In Star Fox: Assault, it was Beltino who discovered two things that led to the destruction of the Aparoids: that they could have programs executed in them and that they were susceptible to apoptosis. He then coded a program that activated the apoptosis gene in the Aparoids. The program was carried by Fox McCloud to the Aparoid Homeworld where it was injected into the Aparoid Queen.

Beltino appears again briefly in two of Star Fox Command's mission briefings, giving Fox and the team information of the current situation.

In the Japanese version of Assault, Beltino Toad is voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa, and his English voice actor is Scott Burns.

Amanda

Amanda is Slippy's fiancée, who was first shown in Star Fox Command. They met prior to the events of Command, and instantly fell in love. Amanda occasionally helps the team out in various missions, and pilots the Tadpole, a ship armed with a multi-lock. She considers herself more of the leader in her relationship with Slippy, and always wants to be on his side during a fight.

In two endings, she and Slippy settle down with children and grandchildren, one of whom joins Fox & Krystal's son, Marcus McCloud, as well as Lucy Hare's daughter and Falco Lombardi himself in forming a new Star Fox team. In another ending, she herself joins the Star Fox team to be close to Slippy.

Lucy Hare

Lucy Hare debuts in Star Fox Command, and is Peppy Hare's only daughter (it is yet unknown whether she has brothers). Her mother, Vivian, died shortly after the Lylat Wars due to an illness.

She is a bit of a tomboy, but is still very polite to her elders. Although pleased with her job as an astrophysics teacher on the planet Fichina, she does wish to become an expert pilot, like her father. It is said as well that she and Krystal are good friends. In some missions, she fights the Anglar attackers in her aircraft, the Sky Bunny, armed with Plasma lasers and a single lock.

In one of the endings, her daughter appears as a member of the new Star Fox team, led by Marcus McCloud, Fox's son.

Dash Bowman

Dash Bowman makes his first appearance during the time the Anglars attacked in Star Fox Command. He is a young pilot for the Cornerian Army, as well as the grandson of Andross. He thinks very highly of Fox and Falco, and wishes to join the Star Fox team.

Despite his grandfather's dark ways, he still appreciates his grandfather's forgotten aspirations, and wishes to carry on his legacy of making Lylat a better place. However, Dash's true future remains uncertain. One of the endings shows him joining Falco and Katt to form the Star Falco team, while another one shows him becoming ruler of Venom, and entering a new conflict with Corneria.

The aircraft Dash pilots is called the Monkey Arrow which has a twin laser and single lock. The ship is very similar to the Arwing, but is shaped like an arrowhead (hence the name). In the Japanese version, he is known as Ash Bowman.

His last name could possibally be a reference to David Bowman, from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
