The Blood Brothers are fictional extraterrestrial characters that appear in the Marvel Universe. They first appeared in Iron Man vol. 1, #55 (February 1973) and were created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich.

Publication History

In 1973, the characters first appear in Marvel Feature #12. This story is a precursor to the first Thanos War.

In 1976, the pair briefly appear once again in Iron Man vol. 1, #89 - 91.

In 1990, the characters reappear in the title Avengers vol. 1, #252-253 and Quasar #12.

In 2000, the characters reappear in X-Men vol. 2, #107 and the mini-series Maximum Security (this series extended into 2001).

In 2005, the characters make a final appearance in the limited series Drax the Destroyer #1 - 4 (this series extends into 2006).

Fictional character biography

The Blood Brothers are large ape-like aliens who were originally in the service of the Titan Thanos, and acted as the guardians of his first base on Earth. They battle the superheroes Iron Man and Drax the Destroyer, and later Iron Man and the Thing in a bid to stop them from interfering in Thanos' plans.

After failing to stop the heroes, a disgusted Thanos teleports the Blood Brothers away, who reappear several years later on Earth in the service of the villain the Controller. Once again they battle Iron Man, who defeats them with the aid of the hero Daredevil. Sometime later, the United States military discover Thanos' old base and after activating some of the machinery accidentally teleport in the Blood Brothers. They battle the Avengers and are eventually depowered by Thanos' brother Eros using the same machinery.

The Blood Brothers are imprisoned, but are later released by the hero Quasar and left on the planet Mars. After a brief battle with the X-Man Rogue, the Brothers go on to win their freedom by aiding Earth's metahumans against the invasion by the living planet, Ego. Several years later the pair battle Drax the Destroyer once again, and one of the Brothers is killed.

Powers and abilities

The Blood Brothers' strength and durability is dependent on their proximity to their twin. When standing together, the two are capable of holding their own against Iron Man but if separated weaken to the point whereby the non-powered USAgent is capable of knocking one of them out.

The Brothers also drain the blood of victims in the manner of the fictional creature the vampire, although it is unclear as to whether they totally rely on blood for substenance.
