Star Fleet Universe
Video games

This is a timeline of the Star Fleet Universe variant of Star Trek, broken down by the various regions that do not normally contact one another (Alpha Octant, Omega Octant and the Small Magellanic Cloud). Dates are given in the traditional "Y-year" notation used in the majority of the games, rather than the "AD" dates used in the more recent Federation Commander.

Star Fleet Universe products outline an extensive history that serve as the backdrop of the games. It uses an Earth-based calendar (June, August, 365 days, etc.), with dates given in "Y-years". These are written as (for instance) Y168, or August Y168, and are dated to the year Earth first made contact with the Vulcans. A direct conversion to familiar Anno Domini dating is (purposefully) not given, however the Federation and Empire rules state that Y0 should be somewhere between AD 2020 and AD 2090, while the Federation Commander rules arbitrarily set it as AD 2400 and consistently use 'AD' dates derived from that rather than use 'Y-year' nomenclature (so add 2400 to the dates given below to understand them in the context of information given in Federation Commander products). In both cases, it is stated that the actual date cannot be precisely known.

As this chronology was created completely separately of anything done for Star Trek after The Original Series (which at the time also avoided any hard date for when it happened), it cannot (and should not) be reconciled directly with current Star Trek canon. As an example of the incompatibilities arising from the separate evolution of the two visions of Star Trek history, the SFU defines the "five year mission" of the original Star Trek series as being from Y155 to Y160, which by Paramount's chronology would put Y0 at AD 2108; while if one accepts the definition of Y0, it should be the year of the movie Star Trek: First Contact, AD 2063.

Interestingly, while the time periods recorded in the Alpha Octant and Small Magellanic Cloud are only loosely arranged into particular eras, the history of the Omega Octant is broken down into 'Cycles', as recorded by the Chlorophon race (who act as the de facto historians of the Octant). Such Cycles cover the defining events of each period, such as the 'Pax Maesra' (the period of the Maesron Alliance's furthest extent in power and influence) and the Invasions (when the Andromedans and Souldra sought to conquer the Omega races).

Alpha Octant Timeline

Non-Tactical Warp Era

  • -Y25 (approximate) The Old Kings abandon their empire, leaving behind some operational equipment.
  • Y1 Humans develop (non-tactical) warp drive and encounter the Vulcans.
  • Y2 Klingon space program reaches abandoned ships the Old Kings left in their system, which they then work on making operational.
  • Y4 The United Federation of Planets is formed by the people of the planets Earth, Vulcan, Andoria and Alpha Centauri.
  • Y11 Kzintis develop warp drive.
  • Y17 The Klingons are able to reverse-engineer the Old Kings' ships and start producing new classes of their own.
  • Y21 The Federation encounters the Orions. Trade relations are quickly established.
  • Y24 The Gorns and Paravians first encounter each other. Early discussions reveal that neither race is native to its respective home planet.
  • Y30 - 85 Gorn-Paravian War.
  • Y36 - 39 First Gorn-Romulan War.
  • Y38 - 42 First Lyran-Klingon War. The Lyrans sue for peace to concentrate against the Hydrans.
  • Y40 - 43 The Lyrans attack an outpost of the Hydran Kingdom, believing it to belong to the Klingons. This starts the First Lyran-Hydran War.
  • Y40 - 46 First Federation-Romulan War. The Federation first encounters the Romulans who are seeking to retake their home planet of Vulcan. The war is fought entirely using Non-Tactical Warp starships, and the Federation fleet consists of a wide variety of ships from the member states. It eventually ends in a cease-fire.
  • Y45 The Orions join the Federation, but the treaty allows them to remain a 'semi-autonomous zone'. The need for Orion intervention in the ongoing war allows them to wield substantial leverage during accession negotiations.
  • Y48 - 56 First Lyran-Kzinti War, which leads to little result other than eliminating most of both race's bases along the frontier.
  • Y50 - 82 First Klingon-Kzinti War. The Klingons win three important planets from the Kzintis.

Tactical Warp Era

  • Y62 The Federation launches the first Tactical Warp ship (capable of fighting at FTL speeds). The other races of the Galaxy soon develop the technology on their own, with the notable exception of the Romulans.
  • Y62 - 68 Second-Gorn Romulan War. The Gorns develop Tactical Warp during the war, and defeat the Romulans.
  • Y68 - 71 Second Lyran-Hydran War. The Lyrans are defeated after the introduction of the new Hydran Nova Cannon heavy weapon.
  • Y71 The Federation forms the United Star Fleet to handle the problems of overall defense and exploration.
  • Y73 - 75 First Klingon-Hydran War. The Hydrans use their new ships and the ongoing Klingo-Kzinti War to force a peace settlement on the Klingons.
  • Y76 The Klingons encounter the Vudar and absorb them into the Empire, allowing them semi-autonomous status and letting them operate some ships as they can survive in much higher radiation environments than other races.
    • The Klingons discover Romulan space, and noting the backwards state of Romulan technology start raiding while building up a fleet of older ships for an invasion.

The Early Years

  • Y79 The Federation launches the Republic-class ships, the immediate forerunner of the famous Constitution-class.
    • The Tholians arrive in the Milky Way Galaxy. They are a group of refugees from the M81 Galaxy, missing many of the key skills of building a highly technological civilization, but brought with them a small dyson sphere (their new 'home planet') a few police ships, and a small number of naval frigates and destroyers; all much more advanced than anything else in the Octant.
  • Y83 As the Tholians explore the space immediately around their new home, and set up a defensive perimeter, they encounter the Klingons, who had just started settling the area. This starts a two year conflict while the Klingons try to reclaim their territory.
  • Y84 - 87 The Klingons attack the Hydrans in the Second Klingon-Hydran War. The Lyrans join in (the Third Lyran-Hydran War) as the Hydran border collapses. The war ends with the entire Kingdom conquered except for three relatively recent colonies that the Klingons and Lyrans fail to locate.
  • Y85 First contact between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, though the Vulcans had known of them. The Klingons are embroiled in a war with the Kzintis and do not wish to provoke this new neighbour initially. Aggressive colonization of the border areas by both sides, and the sheer power of the Federation economy, causes a steady decline in the relationship.
    • The Gorns blockade the Paravian home system.
  • Y88 - 91 The Second Lyran-Klingon War is fought over how to divide the former Hydran Kingdom.
  • Y88 - 92 The First Federation-Kzinti War begins when the Kzintis attack the Federation. Klingon advisors serve on a number of Federation ships to advise them on how fight against the Kzinti. While the Kzinti make initial gains, the Federation is able to re-establish the original border.
  • Y90 - 96 Third Gorn-Romulan War. Using a new generation of weapons, the Romulans attack and drive deep into Gorn space, despite the lack of Tactical Warp Drive before being driven back again.
  • Y92 - 102 The Great Klingon-Tholian War. The Klingons make a massive effort to rid the galaxy of the 'Tholian Menace', culminating in a disastrous attack on the dyson sphere of Tholia itself. The Klingon eventually have to abandon the war, having lost 40% of their fleet.
  • Y102 The Federation declares that its border is a circle 4,750 parsecs from the center of the Primary Member Zone, which is based on the distance between Earth and the Romulan Neutral Zone. This is announced as a major peace initiative, for it is declared that the Federation will never seek to further expand the border. However, the Kzintis and Klingons are not impressed, as several disputed systems are conveniently within the area of the declaration.
  • Y103 - 106 Second Klingo-Kzinti War. The Kzintis regain their planets.
  • Y106 - 109 Kzinti and Lyran campaigns against the Carnivons defeats them, and drives them out of explored portions of the galaxy.
  • Y109 - 114 Second Lyran-Kzinti War.
  • Y110 The Tholians capture disruptor technology from the Klingons in a daring raid. These are used to replace the particle cannons that the Tholians can no longer build.
  • Y110 - 111 The First Klingon-Federation War, the Klingons try to reclaim areas covered by the Border Declaration of Y102, but are unable to make any major gains.
  • Y112 The first colony on Aurora III is established.
  • Y113 Sixteen Orion ships and their crews mutiny and disappear. These are believed to be the founding elements of the Orion Pirates.
  • Y116 A Kzinti civil war ends when the Usurper's defeated forces dive into the WYN nebula, and (apparently) to their doom. Surprised to find the WYN Cluster inside, the Usurper sets up a small state inside the radiation zone with his remaining followers.

The Middle Years

  • Y120 - 125 Fourth Gorn-Romulan War.
  • Y123 - 131 Third Kligo-Kzinti War.
  • Y125 - 131 Third Lyran-Kzinti War.
  • Y125 The Federation prepares for a major coreward expansion, and builds up significant resources at Aurora for this long-term effort.
  • Y126 The Federation launches the first Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser. Six older Republic-class ships are upgraded, but the cost is nearly the same as a new ship.
  • Y130 Aurora, the keystone of the Federation's core-ward expansion, vanishes in an ion storm - star, planets, ships, bases, asteroids, everything! The resulting scandal in the Federation Council delays coreward explansion for decades. It would be nearly a century before contact with the system is re-established, from its new home in the Omega Octant (as the capital world of the Federal Republic of Aurora).
  • Y135 The Hydrans launch a campaign from the Lost Colonies with all-new ship types that swiftly defeats the Lyran and Klingon garrison forces and re-establishes the Kingdom.
  • Y136 - 142 The Second Federation-Kzinti War.
  • Y154 Second Federation-Romulan War. The Federation first encounters the Cloaking Device and sees the face of the Romulans.
  • Y156 Second Federation-Klingon War begins and ends shortly thereafter with the Organian Peace Treaty.
  • Y157 A Gorn-Federation 'War' begins and ends after two young captains fire first and face embarrassing questions later. Despite interference from the Romulans, a treaty is signed and soon the Gorns become the Federation's closest ally.
  • Y159 Seeking to prevent the Klingons from major gains in the Four Powers War, the Federation makes some mock moves in support of the Kzintis. The Klingons respond by signing the Treaty of Smarba with the Romulans, providing them with modern warp technology and starships, and turning them into a modern power.
  • Y161 The Kzinti Attack Shuttle, a warp-powered fighter, is introduced with Hydran help. As it cannot guide its own drones (something Hydran fighters didn't need to do), it is merely a platform to launch drones faster.
  • Y164 The Advanced Attack Shuttle (AAS) is introduced. As it is able to guide its own drones, it spurs development of dedicated fighter carriers, and fighters by most of the other powers.
  • Y166 The Federation-Kzinti Articles of Agreement.

The General War

  • Y168 - 185 The General War. Starting as the Fourth Lyran-Kzinti War, the Klingons, Hydrans, Federation, Romulans, Gorns, and Tholians all become involved in the conflict that final ends with all parties exhausted from the conflict.
  • Y169 Sensing that when the Coalition (Lyrans and Klingons) are done dismembering the Kzinti Hegemony, they will be next, the Hydran Kingdom attacks the Lyrans and attempts to send a fleet through Klingon space to the Federation in a plea for help. The fleet is destroyed before reaching Federation space, and major resources are diverted from the war against the Kzintis against the Hydrans.
  • Y170 The Hydran capital falls, along with the bulk of the Hydran fleet, leaving the remainder to fall back to the Old Colonies. The Coalition is content to let the Hydrans go, believing there is too little to rebuild with, and desiring to finish the war with the Kzintis than spend some years tracking down the location of the remaining Hydran bases.
  • Y171 After the disappearance of the Organians, and the Federation about to intervene in the war against the Kzintis, the Klingons launch a massive attack on the Federation, bringing them into the General War.
  • Y173 Seeing the Federation in deep trouble from the Klingon assault, the Romulan Star Empire joins the Coalition and attacks the Federation. At the end of the year, peace talks to end the war with the outer portions of the Federation "demilitarized" instead turns into a wild melee at the last minute.
  • Y174 The Gorns join the Alliance (Hydrans, Kzintis, Federation) and declares war on the Coalition, marking the involvement of all the known major powers of the Alpha Octant.
  • Y176 The Federation goes over to the strategic offensive with Operation Wedge, and drive split the lines of communication between the Klingons and Romulans.
  • Y177 In a bid to restore communications, the Klingons launch Operation Nutcracker against the Tholians. Kzinti and Gorn ships end up aiding in the defense, and the Coalition nearly reached the Tholian dyson sphere before the arrival of the Neo-Tholians help turn the tide.
  • Y178 The Hydrans finally win the "Battle of the Wall" breaking back out of the Old Colonies and driving for their capital. The Lyrans retreat back to the pre-war border, silently accepting a separate peace.
  • Y181 Operation Remus is launched as joint Federation-Gorn-Kzinti effort to knock the Romulans out of the war. The Federation fleet reaches Remus and devastates the system. However, the USS MacArthur is severely damaged, and it crashes into the planetary capital as the fusion reactors of the impulse engines detonate, starting a nuclear winter on the planet.
  • Y182 After the devastation of Remus, the Alliance turned it's attention on the Klingons in Operation Cavalry.
  • The Seltorian nest ship sent to the Milky Way Galaxy to find any Tholians that had fled there arrived and is set up with a colony planet inside the Klingon Empire.
  • Y185 With the ISC getting more active, the appearance of the first Andromedan Dominators, and all economies thoroughly exhausted from the long war, a general armistice is signed by all parties with the original borders generally intact.

The X-Technology Era

  • Y186 - Y190 In an effort to "protect the galaxy from itself", the Interstellar Concordium (ISC) launches a massive invasion of the Neutral Zones of the sector, seeking to separate the potentially warring parties. They had reached the far ends of known space when the Andromedans attacked.
  • Y188 - 202 The Andromedan invasion began as the Andromedans, who had until then been minor nuisances, launched their full-scale invasion of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Andromedans would be able to seriously threaten every race of the known galaxy, to the point of destroying the Lyran Democratic Republic (LDR). Federation-Klingon cooperation became the groundwork of Operation Unity, a vast allied assault on the Andromedan base in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

The X2-Technology Era

  • c. Y210 The Xorkaelian Empire reportedly launches an assault on the Alpha Octant races.
  • Y225 End of recorded Star Fleet Universe history.
