"Johan van Beethoven" triggers only one hit in Google scholar and that one isn't in English. It triggers three hits in Google books, two are in French and the other isn't in English, either. "Johann van Beethoven", by contrast, has 39 hits in Google scholar, thirty being in English. It also triggers 300 hits in Google books, many or most of which are in English.
