"Stop and Stare" is the second single by pop rock band OneRepublic, produced by Greg Wells, and recorded and mixed by Joe Zook. It's a track from their debut album Dreaming Out Loud. "Stop and Stare" was released to U.S. radio on November 27, 2007. It was later solicited to UK radio on December 16, 2007 and to Australian radio on December 17, 2007 following the success of previous single "Apologize" which was #30 that same week. The single was released on March 3, 2008 in the UK. It hit the charts, placing the top ten in 17 countries as well as in the United World Chart. Unlike the remixed "Apologize", this is the first official single from the band that is not remixed.
Music video
A music video for the song has been shot, and the video premiered on TRL on January 28, 2008, with Anthony Mandler as the director. The video features multiple versions of lead singer Ryan Tedder.
The video starts with people gathering at a funeral with a phone ringing and a door creaking while it's closing at a deserted town. Ryan Tedder is then also seen seemingly attempting to drown himself in a bathtub, as he is completely submerged and unconscious. The events of his life then flash before his eyes; Ryan is shown standing over an empty grave, while another flashback shows Ryan is shown walking to a motel where he meets the band to sing the song. Soon people start gathering and watching from outside the motel the band is playing in, while another flashback has Ryan in a hooded jacket and is seen in the next door room of the motel looking at a T.V. with nothing but static. Meanwhile the Ryan standing over the empty grave seems to leave his body, splitting into a "spirit Ryan", who begins walking towards the motel. As the spirit Ryan gets to the motel he is nearly hit by a car being driven by another flashback of Ryan with a pregnant woman in the back. The car comes to a stop as these two Ryans look at each other. The static TV in the motel room with the hooded Ryan bursts into flames, and the video ends with the Ryan in the bathtub resurfacing. The video peaked at number 1 on Vh1's Top 20 Video Countdown.
