Frédéric Kanouté (born September 2, 1977 in Sainte-Foy-les-Lyon, near Lyons) is a French-Malian footballer, who plays for Sevilla
Kanouté's talents as a tall striker were noticed by local Olympique Lyonnais team and he joined them as an apprentice in 1997. Kanouté attracted a transfer bid from English club, West Ham in 2000 and he played 56 times and scored 14 goals. His speed, awareness and loping run attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur who bought him at the end of the 2002-03 season. Although eleigible for either, Kanouté elected to play for Mali rather than for France.
Fredi has enjoyed mixed success at Tottenham with occasional flashes of brilliance marked by apparent pique when he prefered the African Nations Cup over the Premiership and went AWOL from Tottenham's 2005 summer tour to Mauritius. He was sold to Sevilla on 17 August 2005 for £4.4m.
