Welcome to my talk page! Please be sure to make all posts civil and constructive, as I'll revert anything I deem to be vandalism. Also, let us try to keep two-way conversations readable. If you post to my talk page, I will just reply here. If I posted recently to another talk page, including your talk page, then that means I have it on my watchlist and will just read responses there. The Importance of the Lead

The lead is one of the most important parts of any Misplaced Pages article; its job to summarize the article in 2 to 3 paragraphs in order to familiarize the reader with the structure of the content that you will providing them as well as to give a quick one-minute overview of the topic. Many articles that are processed through Good Article or Featured Article assessments will be heavily scrutinized for a poor lead section.

For articles dealing with video games, a common practice has developed for leads, being a 3-paragraph discussion.

First paragraph
The first paragraph should state the name of the game (using both bold (to identify the article's name) and italics as per the manual of style), along with any other alternate names the game may go by. The genre of the game should be clearly identified as well as the developer and the publisher. If a notable person has been cited by the game as having worked on the game's development (such as Tim Schafer or David Jaffe), this should also be noted. Release dates should be given, along with the release of any ports, remakes, or sequels.
Second paragraph
The second paragraph should summarize the plot briefly in one or two sentences; a high level overview is only needed to set the stage for further discussion. One or two sentences should be included to discuss the gameplay, including any notable features of the game.
Third paragraph
The third paragraph should cover the reception of the game, citing its general critical reaction and any significantly notable successful or failing elements in the game. If the game has won awards, this aspect can be noted, but specific mention of any award is discouraged.

This approach should help you to write a good lead for nearly any game, though this may need to be altered for other games. If there's not a lot of reception information for a game, it may be worthwhile to combine the listed first and third paragraphs into one paragraph. There may be need to talk more about an aspect not normally covered in video game articles (such as with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Atari 2600)) which should be noted in the lead.

Feature

Writing about Gameplay

The Gameplay section is a crucial component of a good video game article. Although it may be relatively easy for an experienced gamer to write such a section, care must be taken to maintain an appropriate focus and balance. The section should be written for readers with little or no knowledge of video gaming and should not be filled with detailed information about weapons, levels, or other such topics that are only of interest to the video gamer or that might be found in a game guide. Your goal for crafting a good section is to have people who have never picked up the game understand the basic mechanics. Do note, however, that it's safe to assume the reader has at least a minor knowledge of what a video game is.

This section often begins the body text after the lead, but is sometimes placed after the Plot section. Games with little or no story can cover the plot in the Gameplay section. When writing about a game, use your head and common sense about the ordering. Generally, start off with a broad stroke—is the game a RTS or an FPS, etc. Don't talk about why the gameplay is like it is; generally, that is better placed in the 'Development' section later on in the article.

Images can be added to better illustrate some aspects of gameplay. Generally, a single screenshot will suffice. Because of screenshots are non-free content, usage should be minimalised. Multiple images can be used, but all images should add something to the article beyond what the prose states. All non-free images require a fair use rationale to be used on Misplaced Pages.

Things to remember

  • Don't add in cruft about weapons, levels, and minute details of trivia; gameplay sections should serve as a primer to the game, not an exhaustive list of every facet of the game.
  • Don't use gaming jargon which can be confusing to readers, such as "NPC" or "MMORPG". If you use these terms, state the full name and the abbreviation the first time it appears. For example, "Halo is a first-person shooter, or FPS."
  • Wikilink! So you don't have to describe what a god game is, link it.
  • Talk about what makes the game different from others; if you only talk about why StarCraft is a real-time strategy game, then readers could just visit the article about the game genre and be better served.

Feature

Writing about Development

Development content is very important to include in an encyclopedic video game article. It provides a history of how the game came to be and provides real world information needed for an article to claim comprehensiveness. However, writing this section can be difficult because the amount and type of information available will vary for each game. One of the best sources for such information is a developer interview. These can provide insight into the thought process of the designers and give examples of influences and obstacles encountered. Previews can also be helpful by giving a snap shot of the game before it was released and may mention development issues that were still being addressed.

When writing about development, common sense should be used to organize content to maintain a sense of flow for the reader. Most times, it is best to give the information in a somewhat chronological order—though information can also be grouped by topics like audio, promotion, graphics, etc. If one such topic gets large enough, it can be split off into its own subsection or regular section. For example, Kingdom Hearts#Audio is a separate section from the rest of the development information because it focuses on the game's musical score and voice acting. Portal (video game)#Soundtrack, however, does not have as much content and is a subsection of the main development section.

What to include about development
  • Who are the developers? Which company or studio developed the game, and are there any prominent designers involved?
  • When did development begin?
  • When and where was the game first announced? (e.g. Tokyo Game Show, E3 Media and Business Summit, etc.)
  • What influenced the game's story, characters, music, and/or gameplay ? (e.g. past games, movies, books, etc.)
  • Were there any delays?
  • Was anything excluded because of time or technological constraints? (e.g. extra levels, game modes, characters, story arcs, etc.)
Things to remember
  • Avoid proseline. Though maintaining a sense to chronology is important, this section should not read like an ordered list of events.
  • Images in this section should be relevant to the information given and should add on to it.
  • Source everything to avoid information being tagged as original research.

Continue Resurrection Edits

Do you think that the remaining Halloween: Resurrection trivia info can be deleted. Some of it is useful, but I don't know how to fit it in with the other stuff. --Tj999 (talk) 04:44, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

I did what I could there. Don't hesitate to reorder the sections if you think there's a more logical way of doing so. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:51, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh nice, that makes it more organized. I'll see what else should be done then. --Tj999 (talk) 20:30, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 23:32, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Alright, you might wanna take a look at it now. The article has come a long way. --Tj999 (talk) 00:18, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'll check it out. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Also, when I went to the rental store Resurrection was currently unavailible so I will try to get it next week. --Tj999 (talk) 19:26, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, I can't help but recommend any film having to do with my favorite holiday. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 04:14, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Halloween is the best! Also, I added a music section under production just so that the article has more information. Do you think that is good? Though, I will need to expand the music section. --Tj999 (talk) 17:49, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, good call. I did correct one bit of grammar there: "it's" means "it is", while "its" is the possessive pronoun. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:38, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh, thank you for catching that. I always goof stuff up like that. Also, I did have the reference wrong in the music section but I fixed it. I also just added in some more references which I believe make the article eligable for that tag to be removed. So I removed the tag and if it needs more references than we can just add them. --Tj999 (talk) 21:09, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Also, you should go take a look at Halloween: H20. I started making similar changes to it as Resurrection's.--Tj999 (talk) 04:09, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'll do so momentarily. I see someone from a published book with dates at Misplaced Pages:Deletion review/Log/2008 June 14#Alien and Predator timeline. I can't believe even that was dismissed by some. Anyway, I'm going down my watchlist at the moment and will look at the Halloween H20 article when I finish. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 17:22, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. I'll check out the alien stuff. --Tj999 (talk) 17:42, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Please note that I have started going through the Halloween article per your request. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 17:44, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Yup, I saw. Thank you. I reformated that article so that it was in the similare look as Resurrection. --Tj999 (talk) 17:49, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome and it may be worthwhile seeing if there is a horror movie wiki project to notify of our efforts. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 17:53, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
There is Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Horror. I think I am going to join that. --Tj999 (talk) 18:02, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
I just joined Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Alien/Participants. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:04, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Cool, I belong to that one. --Tj999 (talk) 00:06, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
I joined the horror one as well. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:08, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Wonderful. Now where should we go from here? Halloween 6? --Tj999 (talk) 00:49, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
I shall check it out momentarily. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:56, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Alright, I saw your edits. I also reorganized the article so it's in a good format like 7 and 8 are. --Tj999 (talk) 18:36, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Fantastic! Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 19:26, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! --Tj999 (talk) 22:27, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome! Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 06:45, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

So, today I will build up references to the Halloween 6 article, but that won't be until past lunch time. --Tj999 (talk) 12:46, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Cool. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:24, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I didn't get to it today. But I will sometime. --Tj999 (talk) 03:28, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay; for better or worse, I just noted and think the article on that film should mention the alternate version. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 03:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Wait, I don't understand what you are saying. Sorry, could you reword that? --Tj999 (talk) 15:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
I went ahead and did this and this. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 08:34, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm gonna copy edit this

I'm gonna do a bit of copy editing to this and when I'm done, think the article will be ready for the mainspace.Gears Of War 22:02, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Cool; I appreciate the help! I think their should be additional game magazines and published strategy guides that can and should be used for additional sourcing and out of universe context. Try to get it to look like this if possible. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:46, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Use this ref to further improve the article.Gears Of War 01:08, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay, but I also recommend citing these sources for out of universe information on the creation and reception of the games as I did with the Weapons of Resident Evil 4 article. Look for reviews and interviews that discuss and critique the weapons and also notice that they don't only appear in this game, but have also been made into toys and replicas. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 03:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay, in the lead, I have mentione the actve reload system, feel free to edit it.Gears Of War 04:02, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
I added some material on the toys, but the biggest help would be adding a reception section using reviews that comment specifically on the weapons. Also, it may be a good idea to consider merging information about the Gears of War 2 weapons when it comes out. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 04:05, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

The reception section is offcially done.(Feal free to edit it)Gears Of War 12:24, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I'll check it out ASAP. Good effort! It may be worth waiting until Gears of War 2 comes out so that we can make the article about the weapons from the series in general and then I believe even more sources will be available. We need to be able to say in a potential AfD that these are weapons that appear in multiple games, as toys, as replicas, etc. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:42, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

'cruft'

I'd like to hear your opinion on this comment of mine. I think I understand inhowfar the term is seen as uncivil and agree that it shouldn't be used. Otoh, I believe it is mainly used in lieu of a better, more matter-of-factly approach to the same underlying issue, namely good faith improvements for the worse. This conflict does of course frequently surface in AfD, and nobody likes to hear their contributions called 'cruft'. Nevertheless, the problem does indeed exist and needs to be addressed somehow. Actually, I'm thinking not only of AfD, but also of 'improvements to the worse' in good or potentially good articles. The info/succession box 'war' in fiction articles comes to mind, as well as a dozen more scattered examples, e.g. using tables and lists instead of prose, or placing too many unneeded flagicons. In general, I'm wary of gratuitous graphical elements. Apperently, I'm an old-fashioned person for preferring 'simple' prose over tables wherever possible. The 'cruft' section just reminded me of what I have been thinking for some time now: that there needs to be a way to address these things, politely but efficiently. I.e., being prone to uncivil behaviour like I am, I can relate to the usage of terms like 'cruft', but I agree that it shouldn't be used. But the core of the concerns of people who use it is imho valid; and Misplaced Pages appears to lack a good way to address these things. How do I convince (politely, but convince) another user that the table he just inserted is not an improvement to the article? I can politely tell him/her, but if they refuse to listen? What if there are a majority of users who also prefer that table or other graphical element? To me, being civil is intuitively less important than the aspect of actual improvement of the project, and to that end convincing the other user. I see now that trying it uncivilly is not an option, simply because it uncivility (almost) never convinces anyone except maybe newbies. All the more, I'm looking for alternative ways of addressing the same issue, and the cruft issue goes in a very similar direction imho. What alternative would you suggest, particularly for cases (and it happens, as I'm sure you know as well as I do) where it's clear that someone is -inadvertently and in good faith- degrading an article (or, as far as 'cruft' and AfD is concerned, arguably the project by being too extreme on deletionism or inclusionism)? You see, I've frequently just given up in some cases where I felt I shouldn't have. But I never was a big edit warrior, as it's rarely ever useful (I also have examples to the contrary for this, but it's clearly the exception to the rule), especially when confronted by a majority of people who agree with a bad change or bad status quo. And the easy way of just throwing insults has never worked for me (and I wouldn't want to bite well-intentioned newbies). But how else convince people? Filing a request for third opinion or RfC can't be the answer. If that notion were radicalised, Misplaced Pages would consist to 90% of content RfCs... Anyway, hoping you can relate to the points raised and can give me some suggestion on what might work, ideally some alternative way to address that which people who call things 'cruft' are -feebly- trying to address. Regarding

Hello! If you do think it is a reasonable redirect, then I do strongly encourage you to also consider restoring the contribution history for at least the convenience of a possible merge as seemed to be suggested in part in Black Kite's close rationale. Thanks! Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 05:26, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, if the DRV is closed thusly, then I or the closing admin will be happy to do so. Stifle (talk) 08:29, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay. In this case, I cannot possibly see it not somehow close as a restore or merge and redirect or something or than endorse. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:11, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

RfA thanks

My RfA
I hope the other kids at school play with me...

Thank you for your support in my recent RfA, which closed successfully. I felt the process was a thorough review of my contributions and my demeanor, and I was very gratified to see how many editors took the time to really see what I'm about and how I can be of help to the project. As a result, some editors changed their views during the discussion, and most expressed specific, detailed points to indicate their opinion (whether it was Has a clue, Too green, or Definite maybe).

A number of editors were concerned about my level of experience. I was purposeful in not waiting until a particular benchmark occurred before requesting adminship, because I feel - as many do - that adminship is not a reward and that each case is individual. It is true that I am not the most experienced editor around here, but I appreciate that people dug into my contributions enough to reach the conclusion that I seem to have a clue. Also, the best thing about this particular concern is that experience is something an editor - or administrator - can always get more of, and I'll continue doing that, just as I've been doing. (If I seem a little slow at it, feel free to slap me.)

Thanks for your personal comments and specific evaluation of my contributions, which really helped.

I am a strong believer in the concept that this project is all about the content, and I'm looking forward to contributing wherever I can. Please let me know if I can be of any help. In the meantime, I'm off to school...

Thanks again!

Rollback

Hello Le Grand, I saw that you rolled back the NPA template warning left by User:Explodicle. I realize that you were probably offended, but rollback is only to be used in strict cases of vandalism. I think Explodicle has the best interests of the project at heart, and we should still assume good faith. To that end, I left him a note about not templating the regulars. Thanks. That is the problem with written rather than spoken text. Sometimes what is intended and mentally thought of as a harmless and good faith suggestion is misperceived by others as something else. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:33, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I understand. However, please keep in mind that rollback should not be used inappropriately, no matter the situation. As I said, I left a note for Explodicle, and hopefully this problem will not arise again. GlassCobra 16:35, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay, take care. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:36, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm aware that you were blocked, you can see above that I was one of the earliest people calling for Cryptic to retract the block. However, this should more fully explain why not templating the regulars is taken fairly seriously. I'm not going to block Explodicle, as that would be incorrect just as Cryptic was, but I did explain to him that it is inappropriate. GlassCobra 16:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I absolutely do not and would not want you to block Explodicle. He is after all listed at User:Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles#Nice comments other contributors said about or in support of me.21 and we have had constructive interactions in such discussions as Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Knuckles the Echidna (comic character). I rolled back as my comment he cited was intended in good faith, although I suppose sometimes what we write can be interpreted otherwise without having the spoken tone accompanying the words. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:41, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Hey, sorry about using a standard template, I wasn't aware of WP:DTTR. I just meant to give you a friendly heads-up, and apologize for any offense. --Explodicle (T/C) 16:46, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
    • Not a problem; and as I wrote above, my intent with what I wrote was to be constructive. After being baited with , my comment was intended to encourage him to just think more about helping to improve the articles as well and not commenting sarcastically in the discussions. I tried to clarify that with this comment. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 16:51, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Just a suggestion, Grand Roi, deleting a warning on your user page, without comment, could easily be taken for contempt. Everyone will agree that you have the right to delete such stuff, and that you have no obligation to comment, but it might actually be better to respond to the warning as if there might be something to it, and you'd like to understand, even if you strongly suspect that it id idiotic nonsense, especially if it isn't a user who has been harassing you. Later, if the discussion is useless, you can delete it. Marking that edit "minor" was ... not great. (By the way, I don't see any Rollback marker that is clearly so for that edit, but I would say, in the other direction, that using Rollback in one's own user space should be perfectly okay, unconditionally, since one can revert there unconditionally.) I'm a supporter of yours, so please take this as friendly criticism. --Abd (talk) 20:42, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I always appreciate friendly suggestions. I was simply stunned that my comment was misread as other than I intended. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 20:44, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I have now read the subject comment, what I wrote above was about the response to the template. I can see both sides. First of all, it was not a personal attack, that was incorrect. It is a criticism of user behavior, and it was possibly uncivil. Contrary to the implication of the warning, criticism of user behavior, particularly when done in an appropriate context, is allowed. It is not always wise, but then again, sometimes it is necessary. In order to discriminate between these possibilities, I'd have to follow the link. Okay ... I must say, I find that file a little scary. Consider: unless an article is defended, it takes far, far less time to delete it than to write it. I think a valid point was made by the link, made without attack or without tendentious debate. Well done, in fact. On the other hand, good chance most of those deletions were entirely appropriate, so we might commend the user for taking on such a tedious task. What gets really dangerous is a deletionist editor who is not so discriminating, and who takes advantage of weaknesses in the system. It's dangerous when it becomes, not merely service of the community, but a crusade. One of the signs that it has become a crusade will be incivility toward anyone questioning what the user is doing....--Abd (talk) 20:56, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
All good points. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

WP:GAMECRUFT

Again in the interest of proper discussion, as this redirect seems to be coming up again and again, the proper venue to discuss it is WP:RFD. Organising discussions is a tremendously nice way of making them more productive, something everyone likes. And, if I may adopt some pretence of neutrality for a bit, your chances of actually achieving some change to that redirect are exponentially higher at WP:RFD. User:Krator (t c) 20:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I think you might agree that it is probably best to let the MfD play out first as I think it would not look right to some to immediately start an RFD at the same time. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:07, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay now that I looked back. You do have a recption section, but it is very very short. Link me to some reviews. Gears of War 13:45, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Mr. Creosote

Hey, I'm gonna remove the IMdb trivia ref link on the Creosote page. The AfD is over, so it doesn't impact the fate of the article. The links to the RS/N archives about using the "user driven" sections are on the Creosote talk page. While you're there, if you could chime in yes or no on the merger proposal (it is kind of lonely there with just me and Colonel Warden), it would be great. Thanks! Okay. --Happy Independence Day! Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 05:58, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Well I wanted to buy more games. It cost me lot of money. Though now that I had surgery I can only spent less time on games but I still play a lot of them. Why do you want PS 3 get a Xbox 360. Btw do you want to be my friend?. --SkyWalker (talk) 07:04, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

With the oil companies price gouging us, it is hard to have money for games! My main reasons for wanting a PS3 over a 360 are SingStar and because I have a large number of PS1 and PS2 games I still enjoy playing. Plus, I like that it has a built in Blu-Ray drive, Wi-Fi, and a download service that does not require the subscription fees that Xbox Live has. I really, really wish it had Pinball FX, though as the Nightmare Mansion table is right up my alley (my username means The Great Pumpkin King). And I am always happy to be friends with my fellow editors! Also, sorry to read about your having surgery; I hope you are recovering okay. --Happy Independence Day! Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 07:10, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah i see. Well the only game i wanted to play most on PS 3 is Metal Gear Solid 4. PS3 cost a lot here in India and plus the games are expensive it cost Rs.3000 for 1 game here and PC games cost around Rs.300 to Rs.1200 and plus with modding in PC game it is cheap. I must say games are getting costlier. How you tried Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3?. --SkyWalker (talk) 07:19, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Le Grand. You voted to keep the Slappy the Dummy article in Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Slappy the Dummy, and produced a number of sources on the AFD discussion, which I have closed as "keep". Blocked IP

Thanks for the notice. I've sent those revisions to the oversight mailing list, so they'll respond pretty quickly. Usually it is the real phone number, because IPs are generally more ignorant of the Privacy Policies etc. At the Help Desk for instance, there are offers to reply to questions by phone, email and sometimes by post! But as this new view-deleted-pages function will likely come into effect soon, no chance can be taken really. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 09:13, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome to all and Happy Birthday to the IP! My weekend is fine, although I just reverted hoax/nonsense vandalism that has been unnoticed for nearly two months. Anyway, I now wonder how much more of that has been unnoticed for so long or if this is something rare. Thanks for letting me know about the AN/I. I've already left a comment there. As for the RFA, well, at this point I'm going to play it out and see what becomes of it. Red Phoenix 16:49, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

On "cruft"

Hi,

I'm sure you're aware that WP:NOCRUFT and WP:CRUFTCRUFT are essays and not policy. You appear to be of the inclusionist bent, which is fair enough, but there's really not much point in citing those two essays in deletion discussions given that they've got absolutely no buy-in outwith inclusionists. Admins are smart enough to weight comments which say nothing more than "delete, cruft" without needing to be linked to essays on the subject. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 00:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello! They may be good reads for new users coming to the discussions and hopefully they'll help discourage others from using that word. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Meh. I suppose I'm not really the one to judge whether users should be "discouraged" from viewing "cruft" as a valid argument in *fD, given that I believe "cruft" to be amongst the most compelling reasons possible for deletion. Each to his own. Just a heads-up, though, given that you recently replied as such to an editor who is himself an experienced admin. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 00:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
I know, but I suppose since it's a new essay, might as well post it somewhere. Plus, the admin in question is on my list of nice Wikipedians. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Heads up

Hello, A Nobody. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. See Misplaced Pages:AN#Question about disruptive editor. Cheers, HiDrNick! 11:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

  • I did close and archive this discussion but it was un-archived by another admin. Fair warning, there appears to be a groundswell of disapproval about your style and suggestions that this is now becoming disruptive. Your recent performances at DRV have certainly tried my patience and, tolerant chap that I am, I have seriously wondered whether your value as a dissenting voice is being out weighed by the drama that your behavior engenders. I'm sure on the other hand that there is also support for your crusade to include everything in the 'pedia and for your obvious value as an opponant of rampant unreasonable deltionism. The reality obviously falls somewhere in the middle and I'm hoping that you might be willing to give some serious thought to why your editing is upsetting other users. Noone wants a user RFC (having been on the wrong end of one I can confirm it's no fun) and you do bring value to the deletion process. I just wonder whether you can be persuaded to keep comments to less then 200 words and perhaps restrain yourself to one long rambling defense per discussion and perhaps not challenge everyone's opinions with issues that are not based on policy or plain assertions? I think if you can do this you will find yourself creating less angst and perhaps then editors on the deleting side might actually listen and consider what you say rather then getting annoyed and not being able to take in your comments because of the red mist! Spartaz 12:05, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Articles for Deletion From the Editors

As I'm sure you noticed above, this is the 20th edition of the WikiProject Professional wrestling newsletter! It has come a long way since the first issue, and I'm sure it will only improve from here. I'd like to thank everyone reading this for continuing to read the newsletter, biweekly.

I'd like to especially thank those who have helped to get the newsletter to it's 20th edition; The Hybrid, The Chronic, TJ Spyke, Alex Roggio, LAX, ThinkBlue, Nikki311, GaryColemanFan, Gavyn Sykes, D.M.N., Naha, NiciVampireHeart, SRX, Zenlax and, RkOrton.

Also, lastly I'd like to thank Misza13, for sending the newsletter out for us, though his bot. His bot has to be the most important part of the process, because without it, the newsletter would not get sent to project members.

I know that's a long list, but they all deserve recognition for their hard work towards the newsletter. So again, thank you to that list of people, and thank you to all of the newsletter's biweekly readers. If you have an questions, comments, or feedback about the newsletter, remember those links below.

Feature: Writing the Reception

In many video game articles, the Reception section is the last main section of prose. As its name suggests, within the section you should summarize the critical reaction to the game. The section should provide a high-level overview of what the critics liked and didn’t like about the game; it is a summary, not a repetition of what publications thought. Therefore, don’t put in excessive, long winded quotes or have a paragraph detailing IGN’s thoughts on the game. To prevent cluttering of the prose with scores, reviews table such as {{VG Reviews}} can be used to organize this kind of information.

A good way to lead off the section is a by-the-numbers or at a glance snapshot of the game’s reception; you can use aggregate scores to suggest an overall critical response to the game, and can provide sales figures (if you have them) for the game’s release. Commonly, the rest of the reception is broken into positive and negative paragraphs. Entirely separate ‘Praise’ and ‘Controversy’ or ‘Negative comments’ or the like are strongly discouraged as troll magnets. If the game has won any awards, then listing them at the bottom of the reception section is an option.

Other things to remember:

  • Don’t list every single review in the reviews table; likewise, don’t mention every award the game has ever gotten.
  • Generally, talk about what the reviewers say rather than speaking for them; for example, “Reviewer X of Publication Y took issue with elements of the game such as X, Y, and Z” instead of “Review X said that “I took issue with elements of the game such as X, Y, and Z.” If a reviewer has a good comment which sums up the positive/negative/overall reaction, or a particular sentiment common in many reviews, it might be more appropriate to use.
  • If adding sales data, make sure to provide context; did it sell those 4.2 million units within three months of release or three years? If possible, break down the sales by region; did the Japanese like the game, but Americans not buy it?
  • Use reviews whose scores are outliers from the average ratings to find key points that were liked or disliked about a game. If all reviews except for one average around a 9 out of 10, and the one is a 7 out of 10, there is probably some clear negative points to be found in it; the same works with very positive reviews.
  • Perhaps most importantly, give proper weight and keep a neutral point of view. If the game received mostly negative scores, having three paragraphs on positive aspects and glossing over the bad parts in a sentence or two conveys the wrong impression to readers.

Your dog

File:Bandaged basset tail.jpg
Photograph of my basset hound whose tail is bandaged due to a tumor that burst on Sunday.

I'm really sorry your dog is blind and that she appears to have had some other major surgery on her back as well. What exactly happened? Were the two related? Doctorfluffy (robe and wizard hat) 04:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks; I appreciate that. She lost her eyes due to glaucoma, which is common in bassets. The other surgeries were tumors. On Sunday, a tumor on her tail burst and is currently bandaged up. Unfortunately, according to the vet, it may be cancerous and so there is a strong possibility that part or all of her tail will be amputated. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 14:24, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
I wanted to talk about your dog when i saw your user page. I too have dog. He is a lab. We named him Juno. I had a dog before he died on Dec 2006 due to gastroenteritis. No idea how he got that. We gave him clean food and water. So we brought another. I still think about my old dog and miss him :(. Anyways take care of your pet and love him/her. --SkyWalker (talk) 17:08, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks; I will and I'm sorry to read that about your dog. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 17:19, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
I hope her tail surgery works out well. I'm not really a pet person, so excuse my ignorance. Is it common for a dog to have so many maladies or is this just a tragic streak of misfortune? Is she old for the breed? Doctorfluffy (robe and wizard hat) 18:13, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Glaucoma is common in bassets and I suppose older ones do get lumps and bumps, but this dog has been particularly unlucky. With that said, I do not give up on anything I care about. By the way, are you a real doctor and if so, what of? --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be no objection to merging (as per the lack of response to the target article's talk page) so I would say it's probably OK to go ahead and perform the merge, if you have not already done so. Shereth 20:34, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Lists and italics

A couple of days ago I did some work on List of magazines in South Africa, including removing the italics from magazine titles. Only now do I notice that you specifically italicized those very same titles back in December.
(a) Sorry. I should have checked the history first.
(b) I know periodical titles get italics as per WP:MOSTITLE, but it just seemed wrong to have an entire page made up of virtually nothing but italics; it didn't scan well. That is just an opinion, so I went looking for policy or consensus. WP:LIST is no help, and my searches haven't turned up any other policy or discussion, not even in the daunting Manual of Style archives, so
(c) If you can point me to a resource I'd really appreciate it. If not, could you take the time to run me through your thinking on the matter? That would be a great help.
9Nak (talk) 17:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Per Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style (titles), "Italics should be used for...magazines". So, it's just a matter of being consistent across all articles. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:29, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

And I thought I was one of your "nice editors"

I welcome your RFC, as most of my AFD's are successful, and you are completely unsupported by Misplaced Pages policy in your opposition, not to mention that most editors disagree with you on this and on a potential RFC. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 04:37, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Spiritedly disagreeing in a few AfDs does not mean I do not think someone is nice and from my perspective your arguments in the recent ones are unsupported by Misplaced Pages policy, which is why I am not the only one arguing to keep or who has created or worked on these question. If we take them into account, then most editors agree with me. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 04:39, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in, Judgesurrel, you need to come down. Le Grand was just doing is job. Do you see Misplaced Pages as a popularity contest? King Rock (Gears of War) 04:43, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

The world of Warhammer: The offical encyclopedia

You do realise that the encyclopaedia doesn't cover many of the things that you are adding it to - I mean... you are not just padding articles with sources you haven't read are you? could you tell me the page number that the world eaters appear on? could you tell me the length of the entry? --Allemandtando (talk) 09:11, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

It demonstrates that aspects of Warhammer are encyclopedic. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 09:28, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
No it doesn't - because that's a book about warhammer, the articles you are adding it to are warhammer 40k, an entirely different game that doesn't cross over. So please explain further how a book that doesn't mention warhammer 40k at all provides evidences of notability. --Allemandtando (talk) 09:30, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
There seem to be a number of books on that topic, too. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 09:32, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Which are all from the publisher and have been discussed previously - what is it about 3rd party that you have a difficult grasping? Please don't waste people's time at AFD with those sorts of games - it's disruptive. Which is why I will support the RFC that is being set up about you, it's wrong to waste people's time like you currently are. --Allemandtando (talk) 09:47, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Please stop wasting people's times with all of these frivolous AfDs. What will be funny is if people are foolish enough to start and RfC that I will never read or abide by, because all the time they waste there will be time not spent trying to delete other people's work. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 09:50, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh and I'd warm up the cut and paste machine - there are about another 60 warhammer AFDs to come. --Allemandtando (talk) 09:21, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Be sure to first make an honest effort to improve the articles in question and keep in mind that we merge and redirect without deletion in most cases. Please do not flood AfD as deletion is reserved for last resort cases and also remember that it is good faith courtesy to notify everyone who worked on the articles in question of the AfDs to get a real consensus. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 09:28, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Nobody has a problem with merging and redirecting. Unfortunately, when Allemantando did exactly that to the Chaos Space Marine chapter articles in question his edits were reverted. And it is not common courtesy to notify every contributor to an article when AfDing it at all. What an absurd misreading of the guidelines. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:48, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
It's the respectful thing to do and the best way to reach an actual honest consensus. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 09:50, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
It's also a huge amount of work for any established article, which may have hundred of contributors. You know this, so why you would expect other established editors to fall for it is beyond me. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:58, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Don't interpret it ridiculously. When there are hundreds of contributors, nobody expects a nominator to notify everyone. On the other hand, how often are there "hundreds of contributors" to a "non-notable" article? (i.e., registered editors.) This "established editor" thing I've seen a few times. The editor in question registered a very short time ago, dove immediately into AfD work, and, when the obvious was pointed out, claimed to be an editor who had exercised his right to vanish. Yet I see certain editors who have treated him as an old friend. Do they know something we don't? Or is it just that the particular disruption he causes favors their causes, and they are glad to have someone else take the heat? This is an uncivil editor who is causing disruption, so ... I'm watching, see his Talk page with the blinking warning! 60 AfD's? Warm up the cut-and-paste? That's a declaration of war, not a discussion of an issue. This is not the way to build or clean up the project.--Abd (talk) 13:24, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Apologies

I didn't actually realise which of the various pages on this discussion I was on when I posted that diatribe. It's obviously not very civil to go talking about you in the third person on your user page. Hopefully this discussion can be had somewhere more appropriate. My RFA Thanks

Thanks for your support at my RFA - it closed as a success. I now have the buttons, and a wand, and I shall do my best to cast some good wikimagic - just as you suggested! StephenBuxton (talk) 21:57, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome, congratulations, and good luck! --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 22:29, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations!!!!

The Original Barnstar
This Barnstar is for you finally beginning to figure out how to win AFD's for the keep side, which is by posting links which lead to real world notable content about the article in question. This is a major breakthrough, and I award this to you for your discovery. Here is the time he posted a link with some actual notable real world relevant for the article Ingen. http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Misplaced Pages:Articles_for_deletion/InGen_(2nd_nomination)&diff=prev&oldid=225245453 Please continue to do this, and if you do this multiple times per article, you will prove to me and others that the articles we nominate for deletion are worth saving, and we will have peace, harmony, and more good articles. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 23:46, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks; a step in the right direction.  :) --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 01:33, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

AFD 101

Here is a good example of how to do AFD; You presented two references to demonstrate notability, one strong, one not. The strong one is this one http://books.google.com/books?id=aIhu14SUsNIC&pg=PA156&dq=Isla+Nublar&ei=gEV5SKXpIIKejgHz7azpBw&sig=ACfU3U2su1QbQqi727_4D4BRH7CyM_Ga2A Why is it strong? Because it shows us that a book actually commented on the island ITSELF, and how the island could not sustain that many raptors, as opposed to a reference that just talks about Jurassic Park in general and its plot This link, however, is not strong http://books.google.com/books?id=vGRZAAAAMAAJ&q=Isla+Sorna&dq=Isla+Sorna&ei=T0Z5SMG3AYjaigGC59nnBw&pgis=1 because we can't access the book, see what it says, so that isn't evidence of anything, other than the word is used in that book in some fashion.

The second lesson for today is, you need to find at least 3-4 of the strong examples before I or others will feel comfortable withdrawing an AFD and going for a merge or keep instead, just one good example often means we have one-two sentences of notable content, and to sustain a whole article, we need more. And I promise, if you can find a few strong examples, I will withdraw the AFD in question and go for a merger or keep instead. See? But if you cannot find strong examples, then you should agree with me and others that the article isn't notable and should be deleted. Either way, we will be in agreement.Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:17, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Two quick things (I am a bit out of it at the moment, as it's pretty apparent that my dog is at least going to lose her tail despite our efforts; see above; so I'll be brief). Anyway, regarding the first paragraph above, some sources, not in this particular case I have and can in AfDs verify their contents. As a professional historian, we rarely rely on websites in our works. Thus, we typically reference published books in articles and books of our own and hope that those reading will go to libraries to verify if necessary. Thus, in some cases just because those in the discussion cannot verify the source themself online or in five days time should absolutely not be a reason to claim that the source is somehow invalid. I have in the past been willing to check books out that Google books or Amazon.com does not display in their entirety. So, we need to have some understanding or postponement of AfDs if published books do show up in these searches, but we have to actually check them out of the library to see what they say. As a university student, I can do that. And in the larger sense, when I ask people to change their stances in AfDs from delete to keep, please keep in mind that I am not asking them to do something I have not myself done (see Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/F.C. Prabis, for example). Regarding your second point, my concern there is not you per se, because yes, I have seen you change stances in AfDs and withdraw nominations. Others in these discussions, however, have explicitly stated before that they absolutely will not do that and so knowing that there are in fact some accounts who see their whole purposes as being to delete with totally closed mind to any new evidence brought to light is something I am increasingly thinking maybe should be addressed somewhere. What bothers me most about AfDs is indeed seeing some discussions in which these accounts who have never and clearly stated will never argue to keep both rapid fire post across multiple discussions and also will indeed go back and forth with those arguing to keep with no desire to themselves consider the keep sides of the argument (see for example this gem of a userpage). The other problem is as you may know, I have been actually harassed both on and off-wiki by checkuser confirmed sock farms, which I could point to a number of past AfDs that closed as delete in which half or more of those on the delete side were in fact sock accounts. So, please understand at least where I am coming from in these discussions. And if I can offer a couple quick suggestions as well, please note that I am far less likely to post some kind of standard keep post in an AfD if it is not the second of third nomination I have seen with an identical nomination rationale and to save the time of AfDs, you may want to consider testing the waters with me first, i.e. ask if I think I can improve an article in question prior to starting the AfD. And I do urge not just notifying the creator of the article under discussion, but also those who have made substantial contributions. Our goal should not be about winning these discussions or trying to just clean stuff up. I certainly agree that hopeless items can and should be deleted, but if articles actually can be improved then wonderful, because after all that's what we're here to do. Time to watch boxing on HBO to relax and not dwell on my health declining hound. --Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 01:52, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia School Team

Hi;

The Wikimedia School Team was started to provide special distributions to school districts in the United States. Would you be able to lend your educational expertise to this project? Geoff Plourde (talk) 00:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Whither disengagement

LeGrand. It appears over the past few days that past disagreements between you and me have come to a head again. You and I have had completely opposed stances toward the encyclopedia, so we were destined to come down on opposite sides of issues, but it appears that we are now on directly opposing sides of an argument in several places. Since our past disagreement, we have been able to correspond in relative calm on most issues. Sometimes we have done so by avoiding our principal disagreements. Sometimes we have done so by acknowledging those disagreements but working around them or (more rarely) compromising in order to engage with an issue. It appears, however, that this isn't sufficient.

Earlier today you and I got into two (basically) arguments. The first was at Misplaced Pages:Articles_for_deletion/100_Japanese_respected_by_the_world. The second, at: Misplaced Pages:Articles_for_deletion/World_Eaters. Both revolved around specific claims I made about your edits or questions I raised about the same. Later, at a talk page neither yours nor mine, you chose to interpret those arguments as "harassment"(, , ). That is unfortunate. I regret starting those two conversations (at the afds listed above). In retrospect, it wasn't all that helpful and didn't provide any new information. I don't feel that those can be constituted as harassment. You obviously feel otherwise. You also, as is clear from the back and forth in this section (User_talk:TTN#Initiate_a_RFC), that my comment on these editors amounts to a breech of a covenant I was placed under following our disagreement. I don't agree with that interpretation. I also don't think that is an issue for today. If you feel I'm forever barred from speaking with admins who might seek community review of your actions, I can't disabuse you of that notion. If I feel that you were in the wrong in our original dispute then you are probably not likely to convince me that it is a closed matter.

I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to follow up on comments I made here, here, and here. The people who disagree with you about articles are humans. They deserve to be treated with the same respect you would demand.

Please, please, please, consider that making a copy/paste response to each AfD, responding didactically to each "just not notable" or "cruft" with an essay link, or refusing to answer questions/further the process is deeply infuriating and profoundly disrespectful. The reason (I won't link diffs here, but I can if you ask me to) that editors like A man in Black and EEMIV have taken time out to mention this is because it is a perceived problem. This doesn't stem from my "issues" with you (which, apart from what I have noted above are almost zero). This stems from the premise that you are not interpreting WP:CIVIL in the same fashion as some other editors. Each editor in the AfD process has a right to be there and their opinions have a right to be heard. If you feel that some positions are weakened by limited argumentation, then please consider that not every person wants to hear from you on the subject. If you feel that nominations are too perfunctory and are undertaken with too little due diligence for searching, please say so. Don't interpret this problem as an opportunity to copy and paste a 'keep' rationale in protest. This is what I was trying to get across (partially) during our WQA/RFC dispute. I interpreted your actions there as a total lack of respect for me and others. I was not along in this interpretation. I'm sorry I filed that WQA. I should have just instead disengaged. But don't interpret that regret as some concession of facts. I don't think I was wrong. I think you were out of line. And I'm sticking by that assessment. This (I'm not digging through talk archives to link the diffs) is echoed here--it is felt that you ought to act as though you treat people who want to delete articles with respect. We are human. We are usually pretty intelligent. We can see through lines like "sincerely" or "cheers" if the text of the actual message doesn't reflect the sentiment of the signature.

I don't mean stop posting to afds. I can't ask you to do that and even if I had the power I wouldn't. As I've said a dozen times, AfD needs your voice. We need you to remind us that not all articles are worthless piles of cruft and that some articles can be saved (Like Star Wars PEZ for just one of many examples). We need you to dig through sourcing because you CARE about the article in question, and sometimes deletionists (or regular editors) don't. Also, it doesn't matter if we "need" you to be there. You have a right to participate (I know WP:NOTDEMO, but the idea is the same). That right shouldn't be abridged because I don't like how you are contributing.

I mean please accept the impassioned pleas of other editors who are asking you to contribute meaningfully. Please don't see something like an RfC as a vicious character attack from determined enemies (unless it actually is). Please see some criticism as a call for change, not an attack on your positions or values. Please, PLEASE treat us with the respect you want us to afford you. Good talk

Take care of your poor pooch, I have a dog myself so I completely understand, it's good you have your priorities straight on that. Back to what you said in AFD 101, I think we are now in agreement. If you can either demonstrate notability in the manner I showed you, or you have a good feeling there is notable information in existence about an article that you can access, I won't nominate an article for AFD, or if you need time, I will withdraw it. But this understanding must extend the other way, that if you can't find anything or don't have a good feeling, which means the article really doesn't have a leg to stand on, we should delete and possibly redirect. Besides, a lot of this material eventually comes back, such as when they do the Warhammer 40,000 main article and discuss the plot. If a massive amount of material is found about how the characters and worlds of Warhammer were created, all these articles would come back in a much better form, so it's not like the earth is salted for them.

And perhaps I will run some articles by you if you are game, as that would make this process more efficient. At the moment, the Warhammer 40,000 series has a vast amount of fictional articles associated with it, which you will notice in topics on one of my userpages. They have so far demonstrated no notability, and I have a feeling they will not. In this case, if you could look in print media for information regarding how the creators of the Warhammer 40,000 series created/dreamed it up/designed the worlds and characters, that would be great. I can look on the net, you can look in the library. And if we don't find anything, the major consolidation that others are trying to instigate should go through unopposed by either of us. But if we find something, we can build them up and keep them. Sound good? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 06:33, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
