Robert A. Sungenis M.A. (PhD candidate), is a controversial Catholic apologist who is known for his thorough apologetics books dealing with famous Protestant ideas (Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura) and his so-called "Traditional" views on the current state of the Church and its authority figures.
Theological Works and Views
Three of his best-known works are Not by Faith Alone (1997) on the Justification by faith doctrine, Not by Scripture Alone (1997) rebutting the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura, and Not by Bread Alone (2000) on the Eucharist. A fourth "Not...Alone" book, Not by Science Alone, is yet to be released. Galileo Was Wrong is due out in 2005 defending his scientific geocentric model of the universe.
In addition to his own works, he has also contributed essays to various Catholic apologetics collections, participated in two EWTN series on television (on Justification, and another with Patrick Madrid on the authority of Scripture and Tradition), engaged many Protestants and other opponents of the Catholic faith in moderated debate, and is a prominent member of the Catholic Young Earth creationism group the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation.
Many of his Traditionalist views have brought him into conflict with other Catholic apologists, such as Karl Keating, the director of Catholic Answers. However, unlike some Traditionalist Catholics, who regard the Second Vatican Council as a heresy or apostasy from the true faith, he maintains that the Second Vatican Council, when interpreted correctly, is fully orthodox. Likewise, he accepts the validity of the present pope, Benedict XVI, and accepts the Novus Ordo Mass as valid--although he seems (like most Traditionalists) to prefer the Tridentine Latin Mass.
Journey to Catholicism
Raised in a Catholic family, Robert sojourned in various Protestant churches, including a stint with radio preacher Harold Camping of Family Radio, before returning to the Catholic Church in 1992. He co-authored a book on eschatology in reply to Camping titled Shockwave 2000: The Harold Camping 1994 Debacle (New Leaf Press, 1994). His conversion story is chronicled in the first of the Surprised By Truth (Basilica Press, 1994) books edited by Catholic apologist and author Patrick Madrid. Having received his M.A. in theology in 1982 from the prestigious Westminster Theological Seminary, Robert understands Reformed Protestantism very well, and it is against this major branch of Protestant theology more than any other that he argues in his works. He has formally debated quite successfully many evangelical and Reformed Protestant apologists, including James R. White and Michael Horton, on doctrinal, theological, and historical issues such as Sola Scriptura, the Papacy and papal infallibility, Salvation and Justification.
Geocentrism Controversy
In early 2002, Robert Sungenis came under much criticism, even amongst hitherto fans, for publicly postulating a geocentric worldview. This view is akin to the Tychonian system worldview and is contrasted to that of Copernicus, which is today the accepted view of the world which holds that the sun, and not the earth--as with Ptolemy and Tycho Brahe--is centrally located amidst revolving and rotating celestial objects in our solar system. He bases much of his argument on the testimony of the early Church Fathers (all of whom were indeed geocentrists), a few selected biblical texts interpreted authoritatively by the Fathers(e.g. 1 Chron 16:30; Psalm 93:1; Psalm 104:5; Joshua 10:12-14; and in the deuterocanonical books Sirach 43:1-10; 46:3-4; Wisdom 7:18-19), and the authoritative declarations of three popes of the Catholic Church , Paul V, Urban VIII, Alexnder VII. This modern geocentrism which contradicts the opinion of today's common physics and astronomy, is to be the focus of his upcoming book Gaileo Was Wrong (due out 2005). It is clear that Einstein and other relativists see no contradiction between a heliucentric and geocentric view. To these relativists, it is a matter of coordinate systems and nothing more.
