Diksit (or Dixit) is an Indian surname.
Indian (north-central, south, and west): Hindu (Brahman) name, from Sanskrit dik?sita "priest performing initiations (dik?sa)", i.e. a priest specially employed to initiate Hindu boys into the performance of their religious duties.
The surname is usually associated with certain people from the Brahmin community among Hindus in India. People with this surname have their roots in the Indian states of Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and some parts of South India but not in the Eastern part of India.
It is believed that some people who arrived in India with the army of Alexander the Great, were imparted the knowledge of Vedas and Hindu Philosophy and these people are said to have taken on the surname of Dikshit — derived from Diksha (Sanskrit for imparting of knowledge). Historically, Dixits have been usually associated with professions related to religion and knowledge — such as priests, teachers and religious scholars.
