My talk page

Thank you for your speedy reversion on my talk page. Useight (talk) 04:19, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

I'll do those in a moment, as soon as I finish brushing my teeth. It's hard to type with one hand. Useight (talk) 05:10, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Suspected sock puppets/24.3.180.166

Hello, I noticed you've closed my sock puppetry case for "lack of manpower," but like I've explained in my July 28 edit, an admin (Thatcher) confirmed that the user Fragments of Jade and 76.120.173.40 were one and the same despite their claims to the contrary.

Shouldn't that be enough to close the case?

That would be helpful, as that user has been quite bothersome in the past few weeks... Ludicrous and baseless accusations of racism, sock puppetry, etc... Erigu (talk) 00:04, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello, yes, that should be enough. Thatcher is an admin and a checkuser. However, there's no reason for the SSP case, if that's so. Thatcher or any other admin could simply have blocked based on that. Sorry for the inconvenience. Enigma 00:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, the confirmation from Thatcher came a while after I filed the SSP case, so...
But what should I do now? I told Thatcher about the sock puppetry case, but nothing got done...
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Oh, don't be, really! I'm actually grateful for your quick reply. If anything, I'm sorry for bothering you with that... Erigu (talk) 02:33, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Fragments of Jade has two prior blocks for edit-warring, too. I'd recommend going to User talk:Thatcher again and asking for blocks based on his findings. I suppose the other option would be to file another SSP case, but I doubt that it's worthwhile. Hope it works out! Enigma 02:37, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
I guess I'll try and ask Thatcher again... I feel a bit bad about asking him again about that, but... ^^;
Thank you very much anyway! Erigu (talk) 05:41, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

I would but...

It's one of those books I was forced to read as part of the curriculum (it's a common mandatory text in the Australian English Higher School Certificate) that made me stop reading because of how poorly written and overrated it was. It left me with a sour taste in my mouth and I didn't pick up novels again for another year and a half.

While I would like to aid in fixing the article I currently have other issues in real life that is keeping me from doing anything really contributory to[REDACTED] outside of basic janitorial tasks, I only de-prodded the article because despite my disdain for it it is a notable work. I will, however, in due course aid as best I can when I get an opportunity. –– Lid 06:31, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Here you go... complete with copy/paste effort too.

RfA

I guess if I'm going to keep working the night shift, I should learn how to close these things. Seems to come up a lot. :) Darkspots (talk) 09:19, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm up way past any decent hour. I should've been sleeping hours ago. Next time I expect you to cover for me! In case you didn't know, I put together a short instruction manual for closing an RfA early (non-bureaucratic closure due to SNOW/NOTNOW or because of candidate withdrawal). Enigma 09:23, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I did not know but I suspected something like this might exist. This is perfect. And I'm hoping to get some sleep someday myself. Thanks, Darkspots (talk) 09:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: ANI

And we thought that people having guestbooks and secret pages was a bad idea. Forget WP:MYSPACE, how about WP:EHARMONY. I ought to update the WP:NOT page with that: "Misplaced Pages is not an online dating service". J.delanoyadds 22:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I forgot to hit preview before saving that, and I was praying that WP:EHARMONY was not a bluelink *lets out breath* J.delanoyadds 22:44, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Footballfan190/Darkspots

Something doesn't smell quite right here. Footballfan was blocked following the SSP/RFCU, yet he still edited today? Also, what's up with this edit from Darkspots? GlassCobra 04:08, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

That edit was made by Footballfan on his talk page, not by Darkspots. Footballfan is able to edit his own talkpage, but not anywhere else. I reverted that edit because it's out of line, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary going on. Cheers, Enigma 04:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Wait, I see your confusion now. What happened was Footballfan made a post and fraudulently signed it with Darkspots's signature, making it appear that Darkspots made a racially-motivated attack. He then responded as if Darkspots had actually said it. I'm going to push for an indef block. Enigma 04:19, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Wow, you're right. That's pretty underhanded. GlassCobra 04:48, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Reopen case

I would like for you to reopen this case if at all possible. The reason given -"There is not enough manpower on a volunteer-run encyclopaedia to deal with this. Consider checkuser"- for closing it does not seem suitable to me. I would understand if you said it may take some time, in which case you would have to leave it open longer. I doubt that there is lack of manpower. I was told that the evidence was inconclusive, so I would prefer it if the admins would all be on the same page when it comes to closing a case. As far as checkuser goes, I do not think it will reveal anything given that the suspect is thought to have IP spoofing software. I have more evidence to submit. While this would make the case bigger, I would like some feedback on how to proceed. Libro0 (talk) 18:56, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

There is a clear lack of manpower. No one bothers with SSP cases like that because they're too long, okay? So no one bothers. So only Enigmaman and I bother to deal with it. But we cut the crap. Scarian 19:10, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate anyone who has patience enough to give their time. If the case cannot be reopened, I would like to open a second case in order to make the situation as clear to you as it is to me. Libro0 (talk) 19:36, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

  • I would like the behavior of Libro0, his false sockpuppet allegations, other passive aggressive attacks, uncivil behavior, threats, ultimatums and other uncivil actions looked into. If anyone is causing a problem and wasting people's time it is he. Your Radio Enemy (talk) 17:43, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

My Signature

I have 2 things to ask you:

1) Every time I sign with my signature with 4 ~ it then later had (precedingly unsigned by jonni_boi) is there anyway of stopping it???

2) Will I manage to stop the unsigned bit added on the end, by making my signature in colour??? If so how do I go about doing it in colour???

I noticed you've been on here for long so I thought you could help me...

Mariano Messera

Hi, I noticed your recent "major cleanup" of Mariano Messera, two things, you deleted the sort key leaving the article without a defaultsort key of any description and you replaced the piped link to Association football with a piped link to a redirect page, Football (soccer) was moved rather a long time ago. I fixed these problems. EP 21:25, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Whoops, I forgot to add the default sort. The current default sort is preferable to what was there before. As for the piped link, you'll need to fix that on a bunch of other articles as well. That's the link the articles for the entire team has been using. Enigma 13:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
You know, I did a ton of work on Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata articles on Tuesday night. I don't know why you're so angry about one mistake. Enigma 13:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry I came across as angry, another editor has warned me not to assume bad faith. I'm not sure that I did assume bad faith, I never accused you of deliberately damaging the article, I just pointed out the minor mistakes you made. Perhaps I was a little terse, I apologise for any hurt feelings. I should have said that I appreciate any effort to improve Misplaced Pages coverage of Argentine football before I said anything else. Perhaps you would like to look at Wikiproject Argentine football, feel free to sign up (if you can stand working alongside Mr angry;-). Regards EP 21:11, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
You sound much friendlier now! :D I appreciate the invitation. Last night I worked on a lot of Argentinean football articles because I came across one of them at Special:Newpages. I decided to turn it into something readable (and then saw the title was misspelled, etc.) and that led me to examine all the other Gimnasia de La Plata articles. I see you made the change for Romero at Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata#Players. I think I'll join the project and see if I can help out. Cheers, Enigma 00:35, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

RC-0722's retirement

Hey Enigma, did you know RC retired? He let me know yesterday on the phone. Sad huh? Burner0718 03:32, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

New SSP

I have submitted a new SSP. In this case I have removed the anonymous IPs that were in the previous case. I have also removed the Box Benefits and Omero Tognon since those represent a different situation. Both myself and the suspected puppetmaster have accused each other of making those. In my opinion that would be enough to close those. The third possibility that they belong to a legitimate 3rd party is extremely unlikely for a variety of reasons. Libro0 (talk) 04:36, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Sexson

Thanks for correcting me. I guess I just figured that his release would be the last entry under the Yankees section and, when it wasn't, I threw it in without reading. Cheers, JEB90 (talk) 20:50, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Sexson didn't surprise me. Melky did in that they waited this long. Then again I think Girardi will throw everything down to save himself. Have I mentioned I don't like him? :) Happy Friday TravellingCari 21:15, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Have a good weekend, you two. Melky should've been sent down months ago. Sexson was DFAd, but I don't understand why. He's a decent backup, he hits lefties well, and he doesn't really cost anything. Enigma 21:17, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Future sports teams season policy

Enigmaman, in this AFD discussion: Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/2012 Kansas State Wildcats football team, you made the following comment: "Policy is firmly against making articles for future teams". I nominated similar future team season articles for deletion, and I was wondering if you had a wlink to that policy you referred to. Thanks. — X96lee15 (talk) 04:18, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't have a link to a specific policy, but that's clearly been the precedent set in the past. Sorry. Enigma 15:30, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Gut feel

I think these two bits might possibly reference out of the book which I think you have a copy of? Perhaps the index will give you page numbers and then we can finalise them off? Your thoughts?

  • "At that time both at the college and pro levels, offenses were a drab scrum of running the ball with only occasional passes. In what was then the predominant single-wing formation, the quarterback was primarily a blocking back and rarely touched the ball. Most passing was done by the tailback, and then usually only on third down with long yardage to go. Halas and his coaches (primarily Clark Shaughnessy) invented a rather complex scheme building on the traditional T-formation, but needed the right quarterback to run it properly."
  • "Upon starting with Halas, Luckman mastered an offense that revolutionized football, and became the basis of most modern professional offenses. Only Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins had the passing skills to match Luckman. Eventually, Luckman tutored college coaches across the Big Ten, Notre Dame and West Point in the intricacies of the passing game."

Well, I helped out a little with two articles that are going places. 1964 Gabon coup d'état and Félix_Houphouët-Boigny. Not really my area of interest, but I'm willing to help anywhere. To tell you the truth, it's hard to believe that I finally made it. All this from the correspondence we traded back and forth a few months ago. Maybe I could help you with something? Caoling

Would you please recheck your last action? If you checked the interwiki link they inserted ], I think you would quickly agree they were trying to "translate in place". That might not be the best thing to do, but not everyone knows about templates like in-progress and so forth. In any case, if you check what was in place before your last revert, the only Chinese was the interwiki link. And, come to think of it, you _must_ have missed the link, else you would have said zh.wikipedia.org... Shenme (talk) 05:26, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, my mistake. Please assist with the article. The condition it is in right now is not acceptable. It's not even close to being readable English. If he wants to translate an article, the thing to do is work on it in userspace, not post gibberish in mainspace. "Caoling grooms because tool have rich special earth shape scene,so get「Caoling ten scenes」calling number erand smells famous whole Taiwan, becomes scenery area close key scene spot。" Looks like a hatchet job using Babel fish or something. That's not English, Taiwanese, or any other language on this planet. Enigma 05:33, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately my books are (literally) 1000 miles away, and for a month. And Google did better anyway! Well, except that figuring out which are 'words' and which are *names* Google fell down. I might be able to help that. Actually, copying the Google translation to the talk page might be a real goad to a 'qualified' person. I'll watchlist it and try to get to that tomorrow.

That IP is making some interesting edits. Definitely an experienced Misplaced Pages user. Thanks for the heads up and I'll keep a close eye on his contribs. Useight (talk) 01:41, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I, too, find his remarks there completely out of line, but by the time I saw your comment (I was watching a football game), he had stopped editing for nearly an hour. Blocking now (or then) would be punitive. I will be watching him closely and will not hesitate to block if he instigates one more personal attack. Useight (talk) 04:46, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, the Utah game was a great game to watch. The last few minutes were especially intense. Useight (talk) 04:54, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Adminship

I noticed your comment on the admin noticeboard, and I'm surprised you aren't an admin. Do you think you've improved from your errors that caused the last RFA to fail? If so, I think you'd make a good admin, and would be willing to nominate you. It was brought to people's attention that only 6 admins were created last month, so more are really needed. Cheers, -- how do you turn this on 17:16, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I've improved upon whatever I could. I'm not ready to run yet, though. Thanks for the offer! Enigma 18:39, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
And it has been four months since your last RFA. I'd support whenever you feel ready. Useight (talk) 06:55, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
That's encouraging. :) Enigma 14:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

thanks for cleaning up after me!

here. I never know what to do with reports once they're done. Hope all is well in Enigma-man world. My watch list is too quiet with Keeper gone. TravellingCari 20:15, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Not a problem. Was looking through SSP to see if I could get the number down so it wouldn't be so daunting. 67 open cases still, but that's better than it was. All is well here. Hope it's the same by you, with the new apartment and all. I didn't know Keeper was gone. I saw Gladys is up at RfA. Enigma 20:18, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
All good here. Busy with work but loving what I'm doing so it's all good. That said, still looking forward to my vacation in December. Keeper is gone, semi-indefinitely. There's a discussion on Tan's page which is more readble than Keep's. TravellingCari 20:30, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
My editing has gone down as well due to other responsibilities, work included. Enigma 14:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Ditto here. Did you make the get together yesterday? I couldn't. TravellingCari 18:21, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Nah, I can't make those Misplaced Pages takes Manhattan events. Maybe the next meetup. Enigma 07:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Two Points

Number One: Your warning to me about the Mitchelstown article. As someone who is in Mitchelstown and a frequent basis, and is actually in Ireland and knows things about this country, Morgan Whelan is a well known throughout the country for a number of different reasons.

Number Two: Your editing TWICE of the Elijah Dukes article. Yet failing the give a valid reason and refusing to explain yourself.

Number Three: Your editing of the Rachelle Leah article. You removed my info about her appearing in playboy and gave your reason that the information was "unsourced". Despite the FACT that playboy had announced it. Never mind the fact that this site is one built on unsourced information. - Hendrixx13 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hendrixx13 (talkcontribs) 16:37, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

No, it really is not. Enigma 02:01, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes it is. And it was a good site til the Hitler brigade took control. --Hendrixx13 (talk) 14:17, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I suggest you read our policies, like WP:V. Enigma 14:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't know how this character (Hendrixx13) has avoided being blocked. His personal attacks on my talk page are just getting nastier. I can see from your talk page that it isn't just me. He seems to use the same hostile tone with everyone. Chicken Wing (talk) 04:33, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
A block seems to be where this is all headed, but I left one final warning on the user's talk page. If that does not work, the next step is self-evident. Enigma 04:41, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

RfA

Hello. I'm considering nominating you for adminship.

Some questions:

  1. Ever had an ER?
  2. RfA?
  3. Been blocked?
  4. What horrible skeletons lie in your editing cupboard?
  5. Got much experience at AfD?
  6. How would you characterise your civility?

Might add more, but that's it for now. --Dweller (talk) 16:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

ER
RfA
No
Nothing too bad. A few scrapes here and there.
I've participated in my share, but AfD participation is not my forte.
I think I'm generally civil, although I cannot really judge myself. Enigma 07:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, we're nearly there now. Sorry for hurdles (but I'm a pussycat compared to RfA!). Please see this thread. I would be grateful if you would respond there. Many thanks --Dweller (talk) 15:34, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

OK. Thanks for clarifying, E-man. If you decide to you're gonna stand, then I wish you good luck. Regards, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 02:52, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Do you have any additional thoughts or advice? Thanks, Enigma 03:36, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Whatever happened to this? If you are interested, and there was no real reason for you not to move forward, I would be happy to consider noming/co-noming ya as well. (I say consider because I would need to check ya out, but I can't see any reason I wouldn't do so.)---Balloonman 00:45, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Meetup discussions

No problem. Hey, I should actually thank you for starting that thread on the Meetup page and getting the discussion going. I was kind of sick that night, and I'm glad you got to it. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 16:15, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

RE:

Ok, sounds good. I did mark many pages with a tag, but others I didn't because I thought they were good articles, just needed more work. Shicoco (talk) 06:15, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Wait...is the patrolled status only for good pages? Because I added csd templates to those and then marked them as patrolled. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shicoco (talkcontribs) 06:26, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I see what you mean about the steelers one. But, The Arrogant Sons of Bitches looked to be a valid article; I Googled the band, and it came up on many sites. Shicoco (talk) 06:33, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

The edits from my attorney to my talk page are okay. No need to remove them. He's an old friend just helping out and having a bit of fun. Thanks for watching out for my page, but no worries on this one. Cheers! --JayHenry (talk) 05:21, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

AN & the Bible

Hiya Enigmaman. I was pointing out that the the Bible isn't exactly a reliable source, to some folk. GoodDay (talk) 22:06, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

AN? Jumping into a heated religious discussion by saying the Bible is fiction is not a very good idea. It didn't progress much farther, but my advice would be not to say inflammatory things like that unless it's necessary. Cheers, Enigma 22:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
AN (as in Adminstrators' Noticeboard). It wasn't my intent to inflame, but to inform. But, if my opinon came across as offensive, feel free to strick it out. GoodDay (talk) 22:13, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I was asking if you meant AN because the title said ANI when I read it. I'm sure everyone is aware that atheists don't believe in the Bible, by the way. :) Enigma 22:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Suspected_sock_puppets/AlexLevyOne(3rd)

Is there any reason that the current sock can't or shouldn't be blocked pending the RfCU? Thanks -- JohnInDC (talk) 22:50, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Evidence isn't that strong and Wall Street isn't a vandal, so I can't really block for anything. My apologies. But you have my recommendation for RfCU. Scarian 22:56, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

SSP close

Hiya, in regards Misplaced Pages:Suspected sock puppets/84.255.150.16, which you closed as "stale and inconclusive", I beg to disagree. I've made several blocks based on that evidence, and it's fairly recent. It also seems that the sockmaster comes in about once a week, so I'd like to keep the report open for longer than 3 days. Would you have any objection to my re-opening it? --Elonka 23:11, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Nope, go ahead, Elonka. I'd never disagree with your judgement :-) Scarian 23:12, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks!  :) --Elonka 23:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Status report on the Country outlines (Around the World) project

Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.

I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines - one for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before the lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.

The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:

  1. Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set.
  2. Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in "the contest" will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
  3. Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.

There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Misplaced Pages namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.

Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe in stand anymore. Two awards should suffice.

Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.

What do you think of all of this?

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.

I boldly removed your WP:AIV report of 24.63.194.87

Dear Enigma: I just boldly removed your report of 24.63.194.87 (talk) from the AIV board. I did so because your report said the user had done "vandalism after recent release of block". That IP's block log is completely clean, and the talk page has no warnings. (It had a level 1 warning, but that was removed by the person who posted it promptly thereafter, so it looks like it was a mistake. Surely, even then, only a L1 warning isn't what you had in mind with your report.) I suspect that you reported the wrong IP, or somesuch. I just wanted to let you know that I (as a non-admin) removed the report, in case you wanted to take issue with it or re-post the report. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 19:23, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

The report was reposted and the user was blocked. It was vandalism after a block, but it's understandable that you missed it because it was two different IPs. Enigma 19:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
See User talk:24.63.194.87 and User_talk:24.61.111.166 Enigma 19:27, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Sorry about that, then. Glad the user got the needed block in the end. One thing I'm still not sure of, though, is how anyone (including the blocking admin at WP:AIV) would know about the other, related ip. I saw when the report was re-posted, you posted a comment with the old IP that had been blocked. I'm still not sure how such a thing would have been able to be seen from the initial report. What did I miss? I want to make sure I don't miss such a thing in the future. Thanks. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 23:05, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Please don't write things like that on articles. People all over the world can see what you've written there, do you think it looks professional to have that? People will not want to be a part of Misplaced Pages if they see that someone has written that sort of thing on an article, okay? There are some policies I want you to read, these will help you understand Misplaced Pages better: NPOV (You cannot write biased things, writing bad things about Jews IS biased, okay?), CIVIL (it's important to remain calm when dealing with other editors no matter what they do), Manual of Style: We have certain ways of writing/doing things on Wiki, this policy will help you keep within those rules. After reading them, come back to me and we'll discuss how you can appropriately contribute to Misplaced Pages in a positive and calm manner :-) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
