Hey. I probably shouldn't take too much on, since I'm pretty busy in real life. But seeing as Misplaced Pages is a good way for me to unwind, I'm looking at taking on a good long-term sort of project. I know you mentioned the possibility of working on fighting game or shoot 'em up, perhaps even getting them up to GA status. Fighting game is in rougher shape, but I have a few more sources to tap. Shoot 'em up is closer to being done, but I haven't the faintest idea how much research is out there. Either way, I'm up for the challenge. Think you'd be up for it? Randomran (talk) 19:44, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey... I noticed you're back after a long hiatus. Glad to have you back! Great work on shoot 'em up. If you need any help here, just let me know. I'll try to help out where I can. Randomran (talk) 20:26, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Help

I was wondering if you could lend me a hand, well it's really more like pointing a finger in the right direction. You seem to know the right websites for reviews of characters, and I was wondering if you could point some out me so I can work on an article on another wikia. I thought a reception section would be a good place to start.Fairfieldfencer FFF 09:43, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't really seem fair that I should get something and you shouldn't. If you give me some good websites for reviews on characters I'll give you either a personalized signature or a userbox, or both if you want. Oh, and this may help. The character in question is E-123 Omega, who has appeared in Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Thought this might help with finding the right type of site.Fairfieldfencer FFF 08:34, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Buckethead

Hi there! I don't know your exact intentions but guess removing the Wikia link is somewhat strange since there's even a template ({{Wikia}}). Ok, let's drop the B&G link, the linking to Discogs and Allmusic will substitute this I hope.----Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 20:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

It's not completely black and white, but WP:ELNO states that wikis, fansites (or any self-published site, really) and blogs should be avoided. The thinking is that Wikia is much like Misplaced Pages, but inferior: there's little point in linking another unreliable open encyclopaedia within a Misplaced Pages article. Just because there's a Wikia template doesn't mean every article (or even more than a few exceptions) should have a Wikia link, which as it happens is why the template has been nominated for deletion twice. With regards to blogs/fansites, it's the same as WP:RS. I left IMDB/Allmusic etc in because they are at least notable and half-way respected sites. bridies (talk) 21:24, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't matter much if we have this external discography or not. With the gear site it's something else. You haven't answered on the article's talkpage yet. BTW: Why don't you join the taskforce if you're interested in BH that much?----Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 22:54, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
What's this?
  1. Nunchucks are an important part of his performance, he even used them when playing live with GN'R . Another source would be his offical FAQ.
  2. With the removal of the Nunchucks you disguised the removal of other instruments BH plays or played. Just take a look on his DVDs or around Youtube or elsewhere
  3. To round this up you placed a clearly POV statement.
If you wanna really improve the article and not just vandalize it please join the taskforce or at least take a look on the current discussion there.----Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 21:00, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Are you serious? I assumed that sentence was a joke (and unless you wrote it and are insisting otherwise, I'm still pretty sure it was). Firstly, nunchaku is a weapon, not an 'art'. Secondly, because Buckethead likes to fuck around with nunchaku on stage does not mean he is 'skilled' in the 'art' of using them. Buckethead is notable because of his music and the bands he's played in, not because he's a famous martial artist. One might mention somewhere in the article that he's into nanchaku and uses them on stage, but putting in the lead alongside the instruments he plays, no way. I merely removed an inaccurate, irrelevant sentence. With regards to removing the list of instruments, again there would have been no problem if the source had actually been something mentioning any of those instruments, at all, rather than a video of Buckethead dancing and waving nunchaku around. What do you mean POV statement? I have not vandalised the article in any way, merely removed unverified crap; doing so makes the article better. Again, I challenge you to add reliably sourced content (maybe even read WP:V...) in the first place rather than spout these tiresome accusations. bridies (talk) 04:28, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I put the info about nunchaku back in, with a source and without the karate kid tone. bridies (talk) 05:05, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I am serious. You constantly remove content you may find "hilarous" or whatever instead of flagging it for needing (better) sources or asking people who actually know the artist's work. I don't think BH "fucks around" with anything else than his girlfriend Donna but if this is your POV, fine. You're right, he is no martial artist but it's an important part of his art - ever noticed the Enter the Chicken / Enter the Dragon Bruce Lee connection? Or the Game Of Death one? Or his contributions to Mortal Kombat? I didn't write the sentence and User:Wnightblade at least sourced it with some video. As for the instruments there should be no doubt, I gave you some sources but may look for further ones. There's a section on the article's talkpage about this already. Just have a look. By vandalising I mean you putting lies into the article (remember the "Jackson Flying V"? - not only it was wrong, you also admitted to know it better) or your constant removal of facts. Talk first, shoot then I'd say.--Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 05:22, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Regarding the equipment section, I already did 'talk first'. Like I have explained before, I removed another version of it several months ago, after discussion. The discussion is still on the talk page if you care to check. Therefore, when someone put yet another unsourced version of it back in, I removed it. There is absolutely no obligation to flag things for sources; removing unverified content outright is perfectly legitimate (yet again, I direct you to WP:V). My use of the word 'hilarious' was facetious: as I explained, I believe the sentence was a inserted as a joke. Again, as I explained before, the previous sentence did not say that using nunchaku was part of his act; it stated that he was 'skilled the art of nunchaku' alongside the list of instruments he played, implying that nunchaku are an integral part of his art and fame. The source provided simply showed Buckethead waving nunchaku around on stage: this does not verify that he is 'skilled' in their use, or that they are in any way relevant to anything. I have added a sentence explicitly stating that Buckethead uses nunchaku and dancing as part of his performances, and provided two reliable third party sources to support it. Regarding the flying V, once again I'm going to remind you that the only reliable source you provided, Buckethead's own official website, explicitly states the guitar is a 'Jackson Flying V'. If you honestly think I am vandalising the article, why don't you report me to an administrator and have them look over have my edits, this discussion and the one on the talk page? Put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. bridies (talk) 05:41, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Of course I read WP:V. "Any material challenged or likely to be challenged" does not mean "removing unverified content outright" and "any material lacking a reliable source may be removed, but editors might object if you remove material without giving them sufficient time to provide references, and it has always been good practice, and expected behavior of Misplaced Pages editors (in line with our editing policy), to make reasonable efforts to find sources oneself that support such material, and cite them" is what I'm talking about. I highly appreciate your recent add of sources and again invite you to join us on rebuilding the whole bloody article and get it to GA/FA or whatever. This would stop this goofy conversation I guess.--Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 06:04, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
any material lacking a reliable source may be removed. There is nothing there that states one must provide 'sufficient time', merely that it is courteous to do so (and even then, I gave several months notice; the evidence is on the talk page). bridies (talk) 06:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
That's splitting hairs. Don't you think it would be better to work together? The article is clearly in need and people work on it. Don't work against us.--Avant-garde a clue-hexaChord 06:21, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

True scotsman

I've got a page to back up the Jennie Breeden sentence, but it is selling something (Jennie Breeden - men in kilts 2008) so I'm not sure I can use it as a reference. Featured editor:

This issue we are trying a new type of newsletter feature: "Featured editor". This is a chance to learn more about the various editors who contribute to the Video games project as well as the roles they fill. If you enjoyed this new feature and would like to see similar interviews in future issues, please drop us a note at the VG newsletter talk page.

David Fuchs (also known as Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs), is a long time video games editor that has written a large number of the project's Featured articles. He has been ranked high on Misplaced Pages:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations, and has assisted in reviewing and editing more many. Recently David has begun to assist with image reviews for Featured article candidates, and branched out into other types of articles in addition to video games. He can normally been seen on the project's talk page offering advice and his input on the various discussion taking place there.

  1. What drew you to Misplaced Pages, and what prompted you to begin editing?
I got involved due in part to (I believe, my memory is fuzzy) finding the site while doing research for Advanced Placement Europen History during high school. My earliest contributions (in December 2005) were creating topics based on what I learned, as well as creating an article for my high school with another friend. I soon became involved with editing topics related to Halo video game franchise, specifically the article on the parasitic Flood.
  2. What got you involved in writing Featured articles?
I think for most editors it's a shiny accomplishment you are striving for, and natural for most editors to try and get an FA. I first nominated an article for FA in 2007, after about a year of inactivity onwiki; it didn't pass as it was poorly written and didn't follow our guidelines for writing about fiction; I also took a couple of tries to get my first video game FA (Halo 2).
  3. What article(s) are you most proud of writing or exemplifies your best work?
I suppose Myst is a sort of accomplishment I can point to; I started work on the article on May 2 2008, when it looked like this, and submitted it to Featured Article Candidates one day later. I think that's some kind of record, but I dunno. In terms of being a good read or something I'm very happy with, however, I'd have to look at my more recent work, specifically Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Bone Wars.
  4. How do you pick the articles you work on?
Whatever hits me. There's many articles I haven't gotten around to editing and improving as planned because another article has caught my fancy.
  5. What advice would you give to editors seeking to write quality articles?
In the words of one of my favorite cartoon characters when I was a child, "We must do reeea-search!" Even in video games, online sources don't usually cut it. Even after getting an article to FA, make sure you continually trawl the internet and elsewhere for more information to add to the topic.
