Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It currently has about 400,000 inhabitants.
First neolithic setlements (Butmir culture) in this area are dating back to III milenium BC.
Following neolitic people, next known inhabitants were Illyrian tribes (II milenium BC) on Zlatiste and Soukbunar localities.
Illiryan tribes were fighting against Romans for several centuries, and finally were defeated in year 9. As a part of Roman empire, Sarajevo valley was an important road connecting Adriatic coast with Panonia.
Roman presence was detected on several localities, including Debelo Brdo where military post was held until 6th century, Ilidza where administrative and cultural center of this area was located, as well as Crkviste, Stupsko Brdo, Crkvina, Svrakino Selo, Marijin Dvor, Vasiljeva Basca...
Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife were assasinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, the start of World War I.
Sarajevo was the host city for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.
