Affect/Effect/I'm a moron
Re: my Dred Scott edit -- right you are. I read that passage too quickly and missed the appropriate use of "effect" as a verb. Agathman (talk) 19:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

"Victims of American political repression"
Malik, the anarchists tried/convicted of involvement in the Haymarket incident that you added to Category "Victims of American political repression" using HotCat were not persecuted on political grounds. Testimony regarding their membership in organizations supportive of rebellious activity was a factor in the trials, but actual evidence of participation (like weapons) were used. Please remove them–it's diluting the category–poltical repression is limited to those who were convicted on the basis of political views and acts that did NOT promote violence.

Malik, by no means do I (or the record, for that matter) consider the Haymarket trials fair by any stretch. However, the anarchists were not prosecuted on the grounds of being anarchists–as say, were the McCarthy-era Communists, persecuted on the "membership clause" of the Smith Act or prmotion of the philosophy of Karl Marx.
The Haymarket article itself says
"Eight people connected directly or indirectly with the rally and its anarchist organizers were arrested afterward and charged with Degan's murder: August Spies, Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer, George Engel, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab, Samuel Fielden and Oscar Neebe. Five (Spies, Fischer, Engel, Lingg and Schwab) were German immigrants while a sixth, Neebe, was a U.S. citizen of German descent. The other men, Parsons and Fielden, were born in the U.S. and England respectively. Two other individuals, William Seliger and Rudolph Schnaubelt, were indicted, but never brought to trial. Seliger turned state's evidence and testified for the prosecution, and Schnaubelt fled the country before he could be brought to trial.
"The trial started on June 21 and was presided over by Judge Joseph Gary. The defense counsel included Sigmund Zeisler, William Perkins Black, William Foster and Moses Salomon. The prosecution, led by Julius Grinnell, did not offer credible evidence connecting any of the defendants with the bombing but argued that the person who had thrown the bomb had been encouraged to do so by the defendants, who as conspirators were therefore equally responsible.
It's virtually universal that political repression is not defined (according to, say, human rights organizations) as repression for committed violent acts. I'm sure that the anarchists were scapegoated–but they were on trial for encouraging violent activity, which the jury, apparently, was actually convinced of. Compare this miscarriage of justice to the sort that happened to Gus Hall or Henry Winston.
Let's get a consensus before we revert this - as I strongly oppose.

- I've established my position about the meaninglessness of the category at Category talk:Victims of American political repression where I say that the whole category is too vague and therefore too easily used to push a point of view. I'd like to see any convicted anarchists put into a category specific to their conviction. Hard facts, please, not generic and broad categories that don't illuminate the situation. Model example
Model example there, reverting the anarchist edits without first establishing a consensus here on this page. Perhaps you don't have a concrete argument to make, but edit warring is so wonderful. Terrific form for an administrator.
