Take a look at some other summer camp articles (you can search Misplaced Pages for "summer camp" and "New York" and get many examples). You'll likely find some useful examples of article tone and formatting. Another editor has tagged the article as potentially lacking "notability" (and therefore a candidate for deletion). As a first step, you may want to add some categories to the article -- see ]. |

I was not trying to stick a finger in your eye by tagging it for notability. And, as you figured out already, you can take the tag off the article yourself; there's no one hanging around tracking it. |
New articles by new editors are deleted almost instantaneously if there is any hint that they might not be notable. Personally I think more experienced editors can be a bit too quick on the trigger when they do this. This is probably because most new articles are, in fact, not notable and never will be; many are also "vanity articles". When I can, I try to help a few newcomers such as yourself that have submitted promising articles; mostly this consists of welcoming them, giving them a few pointers and then trying to defend their article from deletion. That's the whole reason I put the notability tag on the article -- it flags one of the people "patrolling" new articles for potential deletion that at least one semi-experienced editor has reviewed the page, noted problems and left comments on the talk page. At that point, they are supposed to look at the talk page before deleting the article. "New page patrollers" sometimes delete these articles anyway, in which case I make a big fuss and the article gets restored (with some grumbling). |

I wanted to point out to you the recent ] to redirect "Harvard College alumni" into ]. I confess, I was surprised that a "Radcliffe College alumni" category did not exist. However, I think that creating the category may run into similar problems -- that people think of the undergraduate college as synonymous with the University. This is less true with Radcliffe than with Harvard College, but it happens nonetheless. Of course, you also have to contend with a historical distinction that no longer exists. I've significantly edited the article since you nominated it, it's improved as far as it can be at this point, so unless you have some other reason for your nomination, would you mind withdrawing it? In any case, AFD is not for cleanup, and I'm hoping you weren't familiar with the subject matter, and so didn't know that this is a expansion set for a highly notable game. If so, please try to learn about something before you nominate it, and if you just wanted it cleaned up, don't use AFD for that. Use <nowiki>{{cleanup}}</nowiki> and other tags. And also, please stop putting AFD notices at the bottom. Proper form is to put them at the top. ] 16:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC) |
:Been deleted already! Yes, I agree that clean up shouldn't be the only reason that an article is nominated for deletion. But it also talked about a future game IIRC and a few other problems I listed in the reasons for my requesting it be deleted. And yes, I know AFDs usually go on top but stop being so anal - if they go on the bottom and not on the top because I do it without thinking, Wiki and the world won't come to an end. BTW, if the Pirates at Ocean's Edge is as important as you imply that it is, then write a new article on the subject and write a good article about it! Let us know why it is important. Apparently the people who voted to delete it didn't agree with you about how important it was, based on what was written. And on that vein, that is why I AfD'd it after the prod was removed. You are right - it could be more important than I first believed it to be. But as I said before, not enough people thought it important or it would have been kept! ] 16:26, 2 April 2007 (UTC) |
::Actually, you are mistaken, it hasn't been deleted. Hmm, I thinking the ' is a problem. That's another problem. The article itself isn't something that is likely to be deleted though, if you check the AFD, nobody else has even responded. (BTW, AFD is not a vote, so nobody votes there anyway). There is a reason why these things go on for five days, and there is no CSD criteria which this meets. As this is an announced product, it will not be troubled by the crystal ball effect. Even if it weren't produced, that would still be a reason to keep the information. |
::Beyond that, I understand you may not like being chided, but as I see it, you are very sloppy about your AFD's, it is inappropriate for you to add the AFD template to the bottom, as the template itself is supposed to be at the top. Everybody makes mistakes, but you seem to not even care. ] 17:24, 2 April 2007 (UTC) |
:::Yeah, yeah supposed to be at the top. I will see you somewhere in space as the world has blown up because I put it at the bottom instead of the top. Sometimes, Manty, you have to be less OCD and say some things just aren't worth complaining about. Complain about things like someone saying George Washington was America's 15th President or that he had nothing to do with the Revolutionary War but in fact was the hero of WWI. Those are things worth being picky about. Whether an AfD goes on the bottom or the top of the page is not worth discussing! ] 17:29, 2 April 2007 (UTC) |
::::What discussion? If you want to propose a change to the general procedure, that would be a different page. Personally, I don't even see a point to complaining about George Washington being the 15th president or part of WWI, that's just vandalism, you fix it and move on. In any case, if I hadn't noticed you doing it multiple times, I wouldn't care, but when you continue to do it, it tells me maybe you needed to know that's the wrong way to do things. It's sloppy, and your hostile attitude here is not convincing me of anything except that the concern that you need to show more diligence is even more warranted. ] 19:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC) |

Just a friendly reminder to use an ] when proposing deletion for an article. Edit summary usage is always good, but it is especially important that edit summaries are used when proposing deletion. The reason for this is that articles proposed for deletion that later have the {{tl|prod}} tag removed should not be proposed for deletion again, but rather sent to ]. The only easy way to check if an article was previously proposed for deletion is to look at the edit history and the edit summaries people have left before. Hi. I'm not sure if you missed my earlier note (see ]) or whether you didn't have a response to it. Please let me know what you think.--] (]) 02:34, 6 April 2007 (UTC) |
::Sorry missed that! Good question. I am not positive what the answer is but my gut tells me that regardless of what the degree says, it depends on what the internal paperwork says. I remember back in the 70s when the first merge happened. You were still considered a Radcliffe student but the dorms were merged with Harvard for coed dorms and you were allowed to take courses at either college. But IIRC you were still considered a Radcliffe student. Even though now I live only three or so miles away, I am not sure what the deal is. I know on local maps printed today the area is listed as Radcliffe College. They do offer fellowships and the like at what remains.... I don't know what to say! ] 09:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC) |
:::I was thinking about it primarily in terms of undergraduates. Radcliffe continues to exist in the form of an "Institute for Advanced Study." Here's a brief history: "Harvard degrees were awarded to Radcliffe students for the first time in 1963, and in the same year women were admitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. . . . In 1977, Harvard and Radcliffe agreed that Radcliffe would delegate to Harvard all responsibility for undergraduate education of women and the management of undergraduate affairs. After the 1977 Agreement, Radcliffe College devoted increasing attention to cultivation and development of research and postgraduate programs, having turned over almost all responsibility for collegiate affairs to Harvard College. . . . 1999, the governing bodies of Harvard and Radcliffe completed the merger of the two institutions. Harvard College assumed full responsibility for the education of undergraduate women." Between 1977 and 1999, the schools were entirely integrated, although I think women were still nominally considered to be enrolled as Radcliffe students. Until 1999, diplomas were signed by the presidents of both Harvard and Radcliffe. 1999 is definitely a bright line. I'm just not sure what to do with graduates between 1977 and 1999. Maybe it will need to depend on what the source material says. But I'd like to come up with a guiding sentence to put on the category page, if possible.--] (]) 23:42, 7 April 2007 (UTC) |

Please note that per the consensus at ], individual episode articles should not be created until there is a significant amount of notable information to include in them, and that the preference is to expand the article first into a list of episodes, which raven already has, and then into individual seasons, which is the next step. Also, 7 of the articles have already been redirected at AFD, which I have redirected them, and updated the main page. If you have further improvements to make, you should make them to the list of episodes page. The next step, according to WP:EPISODE, is to begin working on a page for the seasons, in which the plot lines for each season can be discussed. Considering the content and low-viewer base for Raven compared to prime-time shows, it is unlikely to ever meet the threshold for notability to include individual episode articles. ] ] ] 18:46, 15 April 2007 (UTC) |

I suggested to Jsmlw that s/he might want to consider their options... including a merge of their information with the Brave New World article, and was waiting a week to see if they would reappear to comment and act. == Orphan tags on <nowiki>{{surname}}</nowiki> pages == |
Hi, I'm confused. You've been putting orphan tags on pages marked with the <nowiki>{{surname}}</nowiki> tag - see ], ], ] and . |
The <nowiki>{{surname}}</nowiki> tag produces text which says, "''If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change that link to point directly to the intended article.''" The orphan tage produces text which says, "''Please introduce links to this page from other articles related to it.''" It seems strange to have both appearing on the same article. |
Historically, <nowiki>{{surname}}</nowiki> pages have never been tagged as orphans - it just doesn't make any sense to do so. Something seems to have gone awry in the classification of these pages, stemming from the fact that English Misplaced Pages (unlike all other languages) does not technically classify <nowiki>{{surname}} and {{given name}}</nowiki> pages as disambiguation pages. |
How should we tackle this to prevent the many hundreds of <nowiki>{{surname}} and {{given name}}</nowiki> pages being given a totally inappropriate orphan tag? ] (]) 10:57, 16 June 2009 (UTC) |
:I am not an expert on either orphans or names. The only thing I can think of, other than contacting someone who knows more than I do on orphans, is to make certain pages disamb articles. Some articles on names are simply disamb articles. Others are more specific, giving things like origins of the name and other historical/factual info. All I know is that as is, they keep popping up as orphaned pages needing tags. If I don't tag them, a bot will. So it is stupid to revert my edits. If there is some sort of forum where you can ask people who know more about orphans, I suggest posting it there. ] (]) 21:10, 16 June 2009 (UTC) |
That's the strange thing - bots simply don't tag these pages as orphans. What's more, I just tried AWB on the pages - it's very good at checking out orphans and adding the orphan tag - but it doesn't tag these pages. I've created hundreds of <nowiki>{{surname}}</nowiki> pages, and you're the only editor as far as I can remember who has ever put an orphan tag on them. -- ] (]) 21:20, 16 June 2009 (UTC) |

:You are talking to the wrong person. I really don't know what to tell you. I just know there is a bot that categorizes them as orphaned articles needing orphan tags. Please discuss it with them. All I know is that they are showing up as meeting the criteria for orphan tags. Thanks for your link to http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Orphan#Suggestions_for_how_to_de-orphan_an_article, which I've checked out. In view of this, would you like to remove those orphan tags you inserted, or would you like me to do it? :I don't meant to sound cranky or rude but I was so done with this a long time ago. As long as they appear on the lists of articles to be tagged, I will tag them because as I understand it, if I don't then a bot will. So do as you want. The issue as I see it is how not to be listed by those tools. Until the tools don't list them anymore, they will be tagged. Please don't follow up with me again on this topic (but feel free to talk with me on others! :P) since I feel I am repeating and repeating and repeating and repeating and repeating..... ] (]) 21:56, 16 June 2009 (UTC) |

There are unlikely to be any useful links to such a page - it serves a role similar to a disambiguation page, and may or may not also have information about the surname as a word - and even in this function there are not likely to be links to it, though it will be valuable to people who use "Go" or "Search" in entering WP to find out about the name. Also, I recommend you read ] as it makes clear that the orphan criteria will very soon be changed since surname pages are currently wrongly classified as orphans. It's going to change very soon. Don't waste your time tagging them. It will all have to be undone. Cathy, the same applies to <nowiki>{{given name}}</nowiki> pages such as ]. A moment's reflection shows that adding orphan tags to such pages is pointless. I suggest you ask for the toolserver script to be amended so that it doesn't flag surname and given name pages, since they are just variants of dab pages. :It isn't an issue for me but it seems to be an issue for you, Hebrides and others. I threw out talking to the toolserver editor for those of you that have an issue with it. It is a Mexican standoff. The rules say if it is on that list, it should be tagged. I am going to tag it. If you feel it shouldn't be tag, do what you feel you should do to make sure it doesn't end up on the list of articles to be tagged. Now, this really is my final time discussing this topic. I have repeated myself too many times. If you and anyone else don't want names to be tagged as orphans, do what YOU feel you need to do to make sure it doesn't end up on a list of articles to be tagged. ::Cathy, you say you're a member of ] on your user page, so this surely shouldn't be difficult for you to see. Surely I don't need to explain the obvious to you? The ] article has been around for 8 months, and no bot has attempted to tag it in that period (not surprising, of course). The correct course of action is to suggest to the author of the toolserver script that he/she change it to exclude surname and given name pages (they can easily be identified by their categories). Please don't waste the time of other editors by making pointless changes. Thanks, and good luck again. --] (]) 22:46, 16 June 2009 (UTC) |

Cathy, The criteria at ] have now been changed, so that they read: ''"Pages containing the templates {{tl|surname}} and {{tl|given name}}, and set indexes ( {{tl|SIA}} ), also should be orphaned, as incoming links should usually be amended to target one of the items listed. Please do not place the {{tl|orphan}} template on these pages either."'', so please now '''stop''' adding the orphan tag to these pages. ] (]) 07:39, 18 June 2009 (UTC) |

:(Coming in here from the AN/I link.) Surname pages look to me like disambiguation pages, which I believe most anyone would agree should not be tagged as orphans. I imagine the orphan list is being made available to human editors precisely so that you can exercise your most valuable asset: your ability to judge and respond to diverse situations based on their individual merits. – <span style="font-family: Garamond">] (])</span> 11:05, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

:(Also from AN/I) I agree with PamD and Luna. Per PamD's recent unopposed discussion/consensus at ] and subsequent change to ], name articles should not have {{tl|orphan}} tags. Please do not continue making this change without discussing it on the appropriate pages and getting a new consensus. Thanks.--] (]) 19:20, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

:(Also from ANI) I agree with PamD, Luna and Sarek. Misplaced Pages has an exceptionally high tolerance for stupidity, but since you claim you are a Mensa member we can probably rule that possibility out. I can see no reason why an admin should not block you after the next abused orphan tag. --] ] 19:44, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

== Uncatstub == |

Howdy, you may want to use {{tl|uncatstub}} instead of {{tl|uncat}} on articles that have a stub category but no content category. Also, to avoid having SmackBot clean the tags, add the date to the tag, as in <nowiki>{{uncatstub|date=June 2009}}</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{subst:dated|uncatstub}}</nowiki>. |
You can see this advice in points 6 and 7 of ]. |
If an article has a specific stub tag, that is not just {{tl|stub}}, then often it is very easy to categorize the article on the spot. Things like {{tl|china-stub}} place the article in the category ] which links to ]. You can add ] to the article, and as the stub is expanded the category will be refined. |
Of course it is fine to just mark it {{tl|uncatstub}} if you are doing many articles all at once. ] (]) 13:19, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

:Good news and thanks! Since you pointed out the problem, the software will be fixed (not just for SmackBot but for hundreds of editors). Probably it is still a good idea to date your cleanup tags (<nowiki>{{subst:dated|uncatstub}} or {{subst:dated|orphan}} or {{subst:dated|uncat}} or whatever</nowiki>) since robots tend to have funny ideas and, at any rate, it will save them some work. ] (]) 13:57, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |
