Marwat is a well known Pashtun tribe whose members live predominantly in the North West Frontier Provinces (NWFP) of Pakistan such as the Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts. The Marwat are surrounded by the Khattak, Wazir, Betani, Mahsud, Banuchi, and Niazi tribes. Their land is divided amongst the four lineages of Marwats: (1) Salar (2) Nuna Khel (3) Musa Khel and (4) Dray Plari (literally 'three fathers'). Some other important subsections and khels of the Marwat tribe are (1) Musa Khel (2) Atchu Khel (3) Khadu khel (4) Bahram (5) Mina Khel and (6) Sher Khel. The Marwats' spoken language is Pashto.

The Dray Plari branch of Marwats is the offspring derived from the alliance between the 5 children of one Daud Shah, the Atchu Khel, and the Khadu Khel. Daud Shah was killed in one of the factional wars between the spin gund (white group) and the tor gund (black group). These gunds (groups) were created on basis of lineages. The dray plari refused to take badal (revenge) and thus remained neutral, while the rest of Marwat clans remained at war.

Marwat, a well known branch of Pashtun tribe, are the direct descendents of Prince Shah Hussain of the house of Ghor (Afghanistan) and Bibi Mato (Daughter of Sheikh Baiten). The clan is named after 'Marwat', who was the great grandson of Ibrahim Lodhi or Lodi (second son of Prince Shah Hussain/Bib Mato and younger brother of Ghiji or Ghilzai). Their primary abode is District Lakki Marwat in the southern NWFP of Pakistan. They are also settled in other places such as Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts. Other tribes which live around them are Khattak, Wazir, Betani, Mahsud, Banuchi, and Niazi.

Like other Pathans the Marwats are also divided into numerous Khels (families), the most important of which are:

1. Musa Khel with sections Takhti Khel, Januzai and Pasanni

2. Achu Khel with sections Begu Khel, Isak Khel, and Ahmad Khel

3. Khuda Khel with sections Sikandar Khel, and Mammu Khel

4. Bahram Khel with sections Umar Khan Khel and Totezai; the latter with sub-sections Tajazai, Dilkhozai, Ghazni Khel, and lastly Tappi.

They speak softer Pashto which is very simlar to the Pashto spoken in Qandahar (Afghanistan) and Quetta (Pakistan).
