The Vokkaligas are a community of people concentrated mainly in the Old Mysore Region of Karnataka, India. Their main profession is agriculture. Vokkalathana in Kannada means "tilling land" and Vokkaliga means "one who tills land". Vokkaligas are originally from Tamil Nadu but settled in southren Karnataka many centuries ago. Today the Vokkaliga community embraces within its fold the Morasu Vokkaligas, the Gangadicara Vokkaligas, Reddy Vokkaligas, Kunchitiga Vokkaligas, Hallikaru Vokkaligas and so on. Kannada poet Kuvempu is from Vokkaliga comminty, who advocated Univeral Humanism (Viswamaanava) concept. Some famous Vokkaligas are Kempe Gowda, founder of Bangalore, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, H.D. Deve Gowda, S.M. Krishna .
