Changes I'd like to make to Template:Infobox mountain

I've got a whole list of changes I'd like to make to the template on the discussion page. Since you are an active editing mountain articles, your thoughts would be appreciated. –droll  09:32, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Please assume good faith

Will .... Let me make a suggestion. Rather than immediately look at my work as if in violation of arbitration, had you assumed good faith and perhaps even asked me what I was doing you might have seen the following:

  • I moved two statements that did not seem to be properly sourced... In fact, I've never used the "verify" template, and for that reason didn't even think of using it , and instead used the approach of moving the content to the talk page where I made sure it could and would be seen - my edit summary says I moved it to talk and the talk page clearly points to the moved content- and would receive a lot of attention, much more attention than if it had been left in the article. When a source was found for the first statement, although not the original sources, I re added the content as soon as I could.
  • I didn't see the Patel content in the source....I obviously missed it, since I just rechecked and do see it, but I assumed that the person who had added it would verify the content if it existed and it would be re added, or someone else would find a source and we could re add the content.
  • If a "verify source" template had to be added, then whether that content is reliably sourced is in question. I felt I was temporarily moving non reliably sourced content, making sure everyone saw it until a source could be found, and had already indicated willingness to readd content once sourced ....To me this is collaboration....
  • I assume the arbitration was referring to wholesale removal of reliably sourced content... not good faith attempts to find and or verify reliable sources.
  • I am traveling right now so my time online is erratic and very limited, so researching for now is difficult. Thus, I have had to rely on others to recheck the sources in question.
  • Please assume good faith, so we can manage these articles in a collegial atmosphere. (olive (talk) 03:59, 9 July 2010 (UTC))

Borderline?

Your generosity is overwhelming. If that's borderline, then Operation Barbarossa was a couple of German privates who got lost when they misread their map and compass bearings. Fladrif (talk) 21:39, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, but I'm thinking of a forum which can actually take binding action. Fladrif (talk) 02:59, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Here's what happened

I was confused by why you added that long list of citations to the Talk page. So I skimmed past the list and got to your final point. What happened was that in skimming past the list I also skimmed past the three points you enumerated, so I missed the fact that you were saying there was duplicate material; hence, didn't address it in my comment and didn't immediately fix the problem. TimidGuy (talk) 10:49, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I Screwed Up

In issuing "editing test" warnings via TWINKLE, I accidently issued a vandalism warning. I caught my mistake almost immediately and quickly deleted it. Per our agreement, I screwed up. This was NOT intentional and a screw-up on my part. I apologize for the error. - NeutralhomerTalk06:06, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I need to be more careful on the warnings since, on the drop down menu, "vandalism" and "editing tests" side by side. I will do my best to take care to not let that mistake happen again. - NeutralhomerTalk06:14, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

James Bevel

Hi, saw your note on the Bevel talk page. I took out the data about the Making of Man Clinic and SEED, couldn't find a citation. Couldn't locate a source confirming Bevel's co-initation of the Million Man March, although I know he did that and have interviews with Bevel on how he did it. Just haven't published any of those. Not much left under that section with that taken out, so I guess that whole section could go for now. What do you think about removing that section, even though Bevel is listed on the Million Man March article as speaking just before Farrakhan. Randy Kryn (talk) 22:08, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi talk page, Please Assume Good Faith

Regarding your June 9 post below on the MMY talk page which I did not see until today. Please assume good faith and avoid making derogatory remarks implying that I have made "edits based solely on our own theories". The sentences in question have citations and if additional information is needed you may ask for it and I will try to provide it, as I have done when you recently requested quotes from the same source as the one cited below. Thanks for your attention to this matter and I look forward to working together in a harmonious as the days go by.

  • You seem to be the only one who believes that. In 1939, he became a disciple of Swami Brahmananda Sarawati, who was based in the Indian Himalayas, and decided to be a monk. 'The first sight of his personality was enough to make me surrender at his feet,' the Maharishi wrote in his 1986 book "Thirty Years Around the World: The Dawn of the Age of Enlightenment."

"Right from the beginning the whole purpose was to breathe in his breath," the Maharishi wrote in his "Thirty Years Around the World: Dawn of the Age of Enlightenment," published in 1986. I hope we won't be making any more edits based solely on our own theories. Will Beback talk 6:26 pm, 9 June 2010, Wednesday (1 month, 6 days ago) (UTC−4) -- — KeithbobTalk15:32, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Kbob, thanks for your note. However I think you may have misinterpreted my remarks from last month. When I wrote "You seem to be the only one who believes that", I was referring to the authorship of the book, not the fact that MMy was a disciple of Guru Dev, which is widely known. Will Beback talk 7:08 pm, Yesterday (UTC−4)

Thanks for your reply and explanation. As I mentioned above the part of your post that was most disturbing was the comment about "making any more edits based solely on our own theories". In any case, it's water under the bridge now. Just wanted to clear the air. Thank you.-- — KeithbobTalk12:37, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Mistakes

(copied from Keithbob's User Page) You've been making a lot of errors in the past month: you uploaded a photo incorrectly claiming ownership, you claimed material had been plagiarized when it wasn't, you've used improper sources or misinterpreted them, you've expressed bad faith towards other editors, and so on. The recent Arbcom case was closed with remedies that covered these issues. Consider this an informal warning to adhere more closely to that decision. If problems persist then the next step would be a formal warning by an uninvolved admin. Will Beback talk 9:58 pm, Yesterday (UTC−4)

  • I stand by my edits and my editing behavior. As a fellow participant in the TM ArbCom your hands are not clean and your perspective is strongly biased. You are also an active editor on the TM articles and have no right or authority to issue any "warnings" to me. Any such further posts by you on my user page, will be considered to be intentional intimidation and harassment.-- — Keithbob • Talk • 9:08 pm, Today (UTC−4) -- — KeithbobTalk01:13, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
  • (Will BB's reply copied by Keithbob from his User Page to here for continuity) But you haven't stood by your edits. When I asked you about your claim of owning the copyright of a picture that looked promotional, you refused to answer. When I asked you why you'd called a bunch of text plagiarism, you refused to say which source you thought they'd been copied from. You've used poor sources that promote a pro-TM POV in the same way that you did a year ago. If you'd like to stand by your edits then do so. But please don't keep making bad edits like this. Again don't disturb my talk page with the same issue (second warning)

David, don't you see any irony in commenting about how rude someone is and discussing their psychological problems in the same passage? Would you like us to discuss our opinions of your psychological conditions? My guess is that doing so would not further the project to any degree.
As for Edith Sirius Lee, there was a very similar editor here who went by a succession of names.User:Lumiere/User:Étincelle/user:-Lumière. The latter account was the subject of Misplaced Pages:Requests for comment/-Lumière. WP:SOCK says: "Misusing a clean start: Repeatedly switching accounts is seen as a way of avoiding scrutiny and is considered a breach of this policy."   Will Beback  talk  04:33, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
@Will Beback, you are confuse. Why do you connect me with Lumière? I looked to its contributions and did not recognise myself. I am not, will never violate SOCK. I am not, will never misuse clean start. I am perfectly clean, right now. Please respect my talk page. Edith Sirius Lee (talk) 04:52, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

The tradition of Florentine bel canto

Hi! Regarding your removal-edit here: ... (an edit which I'm more and more in agreement with, the more I learn about the organization which published the article; whose link you removed) ... I'd like to ask:

  • why did you decide to call it a dubious source?
  • what are your opinions on the linked articles' contents?
  • Is your decision to remove the information, based only on the source; or on the contents?

Thanks. Bel beller (talk) 17:45, 30 July 2010 (UTC) PS: I have no intent in restoring the link; but your motives would interest me.

John Birch Society

Hello, I noticed that you reverted the changes that I had made to the 'John Birch Society' entry on the grounds that they were apparently not minor & might be? controversial. I made the following changes:

1) original: 'kept a tight reign'. changed to: 'control' as 'reign' means rule, as in the 'reign of Henry VIII' while 'kept a tight rein' (note spelling difference!) is an idiom of equestrian origin (rein being the strap by which a horse is controlled or guided). I guessed that that the original author meant 'control' and not 'rule' and, as idioms can be difficult for non-native speakers, changed this accordingly.

2) According to the John Birch Society web page, their address is 'Appleton', not 'Grand Chute'. Changed to Appleton to match what is on their web-page.

3) Removed 'Americentrism' from the introductory paragraph as it (per wikipedia!) is considered a pejorative phrase and, as such, seems to violate NPOV. It would be more correct to use this term in a section discussing criticisms of the JBS, but I couldn't figure out where to add it.

4) Split one paragraph into two as it covered two separate topics.

With the possible exception of (3) above, none of these items seem at all controversial, and do seem (at least to me) to be minor. I'm sorry if the changes caused a problem.

Socks

Curious the extremely aggressive "new" editors on the TM-related articles whose posts are routed through Canadian ISPs - at least from all appearances. I haven't decided who ECL/67.230.*** might be, though your guess is as good as any. Clearly not a genuinely "new" editor; and quite obviously either a sock of a current editor or a former bad actor returned. And, is it too much to suggest that there is an interesting confluence between EMP/99.240..*** and KBob's editing pattern, both as to arguments and articles? Which is not to say that it is a sock of KBob, just a curious confluence. Fladrif (talk) 01:35, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

John Clark (actor/director)

Hi Will, I see that you are aware of this article. I have replaced some unreferenced P.O.V. content with what I believe is neutral well referenced content. I also deleted a short statement about a Green Card scam by User:JohnClarknew in the articles talk page as I felt it was a potentially libelous. User:JohnClarknew has now reverted the talk page and left this comment on my talk page User:Memphisto#Your John Clark edits - Which I think more than sums up his attitude. Cheers, Memphisto (talk) 18:50, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

User:JohnClarknew has now carried out his threat to 'remove your edits' by reverting the page back to your last edit on 7 June 2010. I notice he has also amended a sentence to read 'the TRUE story', because that is what is important to him. Nevermind neutral point of view / verifiability / no original research. Sigh. Something Ain't Right

I've read enough posts on the TMM talkpages the past year or so to have a pretty good sense of the writing style, vocabulary, and approach of the various editors. These posts may be signed by BwB, but I am 110% convinced that BwB did not write them. They are completely unlike his style, and use vocabulary that BwB has never shown prior evidence of possessing. I have a pretty good idea who did write them. I don't know if this is a situation for CheckUser, but I'd point out that BwB almost always posts from the SE US, not from Fairfield. I'm guessing these posts either came from Fairfield with someone else using BwB's login, or BwB is forwarding ghost-written posts. If so WP:NOSHARE appears to apply. MHP mediation groundrules

Can you remind folks about the ground rules they've all agreed to? In particular, Glkanter says "since Rick Block just said he wants to continue arguing the math ..." Hi! Here's one of the naughty boys reporting to Master. Moreover I admit to having deep expertise. My name is Richard, by the way.
I thought I was following the instruction to have discussions about side issues, The Truth, whatever, elsewhere. Not starting a forest fire. BTW I was off[REDACTED] and the dear MHP for several months and the re-mediation was already progressing far. I had a lot of catching up to do. Don't worry, WP:MHP is not my day job.
On the other hand esteemed co-editors write expansive essays about[REDACTED] policy mixed up with little bits of POV on MHP including hidden assumptions (ie POV's which are implicit, not explicit)Gill110951 (talk) 06:37, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Walter Mercado's bio

Hi Will Can you guide me here? I'm new to wiki. My source is Mr Walter Mercado himself. Walter asked me to edit his bio. He was ok with the information that has been taken out of his bio. How do I present him as the source of the information and put everything back? I also have to traslate all the information for the spanish version of Misplaced Pages. JamesJLynn (talk) 18:10, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your guidance. Mr Mercado and I will be gathering all the necessary news and magazine clippings along with other verifiable references in order to submit more information. Thanks JamesJLynn (talk) 20:16, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

The sorry saga of a certain satguru

Hi Will. I tried to post the following on the Prem Rawat article talk page, but it doesn't seem possible to edit it at present. I mentioned there that I'd found more quotes on the topic, but didn't want to 'bore the pants off everyone'. However, with Momento apparently impersonating a Jack Russell terrier that won't let go of its current favourite squeaky toy, it seems necessary to go the extra mile.

"Sublime devotion, however, comes from implicit faith and confidence in the Satguru of the time, and it must be clearly understood that only He who can bestow God-vision instantaneously within oneself is the Satguru of the time, and no one else. In reality, He is God incarnate."

excerpt from discourse given by Yogiraj Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj, Father of Guru Maharaj Ji, in June, 1961, at Prem Nagar, India.

"Concentration is acquired by infinite devotion and devotion is acquired from Satguru, from the Perfect Master.”
“Guru Nanak said, and Saint Tulsidas said, that anyone can become even like Brahma or Shiva, but without the Perfect Master, without the True Guru, there can be no upliftment whatsoever. Knowledge only comes from Satguru. Okay, so how do we recognize the Satguru? How do we recognize that Perfect Master?"''

excerpts from ‘Remembrance is the Unbreakable Devotion’
Shri Hans Ji Maharaj. March, 1964

"Seek the shelter of the Perfect Master who has realized God; He will show you the way to realize Him. The Satguru or Realized Soul is the only shelter and it is He alone that can provide you with the vision of God." Lord Christ said, "Come to me and I shall deliver you from all troubles'" Prophet Mohammed and other prophets have all said the same thing. The question now arises, how to know and recognize the Satguru who can bestow the vision of God. Lord Krishna was the Satguru of His time; He bestowed the vision of God to His disciple Arjuna. But where to find the present living Satguru?”

excerpt from ‘How to Save Mankind from Extinction’
Satsang given by Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj at Prem Nagar Ashram, Hardwar, India

The claim is evidently this: that there is only one Satguru, and on his father's death, Rawat succeeded to that title. Also evident is the fact that "Satguru" and "Perfect Master" were terms that were used interchangeably by Rawat's father, but with preponderance actually given to "Satguru". The biography 'Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj, Eternal is He, Eternal is His Knowledge' published by Divine Light mission in 1970, uses the term 'perfect master' only once (quote: "In the story of Christ we find an example of a perfect master and his message."). Nowhere else in the entire book. By contrast, the term "Satguru" is used no less than 30 times. (See http://ex-premie.org/papers/Satgurudev.htm for evidence). Enough said? Revera (talk) 10:55, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

I am reluctant to get involved in this debate, mostly because after careful reading of everyone's input, I still have no idea WTF it is about. Anyway, his father spoke no English, so it is natural he would use the Hindi word Satguru. That doesn't imply it was the preferred term; it was probably the only term. It seems to me "Perfect Master" was adopted to express the same idea in English. i.e. they are one and the same. Is this problematic? Rumiton (talk) 13:31, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Editing now seems to be possible once again on the Prem Rawat talk page. Have resumed there. Revera (talk) 15:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Not problematic for me, Rumiton. Here's one of the cited sources (Downton, 'Sacred Journeys', p4): "Premies prostrated to them (his family) as they did to Guru Maharaj Ji, even though in India and the United States he was the only one spoken of as "satguru", the Indian term for Perfect Master". Franklin Pierce edit

Re: your comments on my Franklin Pierce edit, I was just adding some background for a statement the article already contained. Though it's true I didn't add a citation, I actually read the book I cited (yes, some of us old fogies still read hardbacks), despite the fact that you couldn't find it in Google Books. IMHO you would have done better to have added a citation needed tag than to take it upon yourself to assume that neither the other contributor's statement nor my supporting statement were of merit and to remove both to the talk page. Please remember to assume good faith when editing the efforts of others. Thanks! Bonehed (talk) 18:47, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

views of Lyndon LaRouche and the LaRouche movement

I've rewritten this article. Please do suggest any further improvements which you believe can be made.

Moreover, if you agree with my rewrite, I'd just like to say that I'm in the business of article-improving, not article-defending. I guarantee that the article now (which based as it is on secondary sources, is much more critical of LaRouche than it was before) will be under attack from LaRouche sympathisers. MHP mediation

Hi - It would appear you're more or less letting Sunray run this. Discussions tend to quickly spiral out of control (currently there are at least 3 or 4 active threads with at least as many open questions). I was imagining you and Sunray would be approximately equally active, which I was hoping would help keep things under control. If this was not your intent, can you reconsider? IMO, the discussion needs much more structure than it currently has (see my post on Sunray's talk). I don't fully understand why it happens so frequently with this topic - but this splintering into multiple threads creating a chaotic mess regularly happens (and quite effectively prevents any progress from occurring). I've asked Sunray for help. I'm asking you as well. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:31, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

I've suggested discussion stop on the mediation page pending input from a mediator. Sunray hasn't edited since Wednesday. If you could comment that would be great. Thank you. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:31, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Doug Kane

Hi! Would you please take a look at the article Doug Kane. He was in the Illinois House of Representatives and is married to Wisconsin State Senator Kathleen Vinehout. He is suing another Wisconsin state senator for libel. You probably would do a better job in adding a citation and more information on this then I could. I did added a citation about a biographical sketch done in the Illinois Blue Book 1981-1982 his last session in office. His notability is established. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 17:30, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

An oddity

I thought you might be interested in the full web address of Soros's Official Web Biography. I just view this as curious, I'm not trying to make a point. There's a bit more there that's curious - and I have to say - subjective as well. The bio borrows quite a bit from the Misplaced Pages article (but not to the point of plagiarism). The counter argument might be that we've (almost) plagiarized him, but I wrote several of the sentences (or watched as they were being written word-by-word), and I swear I didn't plagiarize. All the best. Smallbones (talk) 15:14, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

John Quincy Adams

You deleted a quote I added to John Quincy Adams with the explanation that it was "undue weight on minor topic based on primary source". Are you trying to say that a minor topic should not be based on a primary source? Or that you have decided that this is a minor topic and not worthy of inclusion? It might be a minor topic if the speaker was a minor person, but this was the president of the USA writing on foreign policy in the wake of the first and second Barbary Wars. How do you consider this to be "minor"? Are you qualified to make such an assessment? Wouldn't it have been more gentlemanly to leave it in place and see if anyone else objects to it? Santamoly (talk) 06:49, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I tried a different approach using a secondary source. Santamoly (talk) 08:13, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

You have new message/s Hello. You have a new message at Lionelt's talk page.

Mestizo article

Hey Will. If you've got the time, can you look at the Mestizo article for me and give me some suggestions? The article doesn't sit well with me. Been trying to clean it up by researching and adding sources to the material that is already there - it's a slow process. In my opinion, the article is poorly written and has several other problems (see my embarassing rant on article's talk page - I got really frustrated the other day). The thing that is bothering me the most is the info box regarding population counts. It contains population figures found in the World Factbook, which is promulgated by the US Central Intelligence Agency. The problem I see with this is that these countries don't officially use the "Mestizo" category in census data anymore, and some countries dropped this designation more than 100 years ago. The other thing is that is bothering me is the newly created map in the Latin American section. This map was generated by an editor using a Wiki map tool and the population counts found in the World Factbook. Is this original research or is it allowable for these types of maps to be created by editors? Sidenote: A few years ago you gave me some good advice which I'll paraphrase: "Take it easy because you're going to get burned out. You need to pace yourself." You were right and I left for a few years. This time around I'm taking your advice. Thanks. Chicaneo (talk) 12:08, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm probably adding this incorrectly, so apologies for that.

The Andreas Moritz page is just some random guy promoting himself. He should be deleted and I have proposed as much for the page. That said, so long as the page is up, how can I go about listing out the criticism he has faced? The source I gave was PZ Myers who is a legitimate source and professor from Minnesota. There's also a repeat of the same information from RichardDawkins.net, a source not considered a blog. Is that legitimate?

Proposed deletion

Hello! I was considering proposing an article for deletion. Is this a process that only an administator can start upon request? - Sthenel (talk) 15:10, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Btw, there is an IP user who has started an edit war in Piraeus and Patras articles, and I don't want to take part anymore in this fight. I've tried to talk to him but he insists on his version, which doesn't seem accepted by other editors while the stable version hasn't been a problem so far. Using several but akin IPs he has done the same in the Greek[REDACTED] as well, and his edits have always been reverted. Any idea? - Sthenel (talk) 15:53, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Well.. the IP editor I told you about has recently used the IPs 79.107.65.171 (talk · contribs), 79.107.4.49 (talk · contribs), 79.107.39.246 (talk · contribs) and probably 178.128.151.174 (talk · contribs). He is possibly the user Pplatis (talk · contribs) and Skgxt (talk · contribs). He has started edit wars in Piraeus (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and Patras (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). He has added some false information in ISAP (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), Attiko Metro (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and Athens Metro (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). He has recently moved twice the Athens Metro to Attiko Metro in a wrong way and contrary to consesus, ignoring its real name. He has a long history of disruptive edits as Pplatis (talk · contribs) in the same articles and his account has been blocked in the past. He starts and maintains edit wars, he named himself an expert in my talk page, he insists on false information, he has been ignoring everyone else's opinion, he has a history of disruptive editing in English and Greek[REDACTED] (in the respective articles as well) and he could/should be accused of of sock puppetry. His is obsessed with adding Piraeus everywhere "Athens-Piraeus urban area", "Piraeus is a separate urban area", "the Metro system should be called Attiko and not Athens because it serves the metropolitan area" etc. He has made a mess in these articles during the week. - Sthenel (talk) 01:44, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for protecting Piraeus, could you do the same for ISAP? Now a new (?) member appeared, 109.242.142.28 (talk · contribs), who also left a provocative message in User talk:79.107.4.49 "Φίλε θα τους ταράξουμε ;)" meaning "Mate we'll upset them ;)". The book is an orthinology field book & the illustrations are important in identifying species - I'd like to give the illustrator credit. Couldn't find an appropriate entry in the wiki templates.
