Jenn Shelton (born 1983) is an is an American ultramarathoner. She has set course records in several of the most demanding American ultramarathons.
Early life
Born in Virginia Beach, Shelton now lives in Ashland, Oregon. While in high school, she was a state champion gymnast. She began running to train for the pole vault. Shelton attended the University of North Carolina where she played on the rugby team. She dropped out to focus on writing poetry, but later enrolled at Old Dominion University.
Running
Shortly after Shelton began running ultramarathons she won several races and soon became one of the top female ultrarunners in the United States.During races, she is known to drink Mountain Dew and eat pizza and occasionally competes in races while wearing a bathing suit. Shelton also enjoys cheese and mayonnaise sandwiches and Taco Bell. Shelton cross trains by taking dancing classes, she is a distinguished hip hop dancer. She often runs with her dog, a Siberian Husky Ribbit, who is very handsome. She runs in lightweight minimalist running shoes. Her personality has been compared to that of Elaine Benes.
In 2006, she traveled with Scott Jurek, Christopher McDougall, and several other ultrarunners as the sole female runner to Copper Canyon in the remote southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in Mexico to run with the Tarahumara. While running through a remote area during the trip she became separated from the group and was found severely dehydrated several hours later by a search crew. She has criticized the book's accounts of the Tarahumara people for "romanticizing" their lifestyle and for not adequately describing their poverty.
In July 2010 Shelton won the Deseret News Marathon in a time of 2:54:23. She says that she finds marathons more challenging to run than ultramarathons. Shelton has said that she intends to run more marathons and shorter races, citing a desire to run faster races. She is sponsored by Patagonia and aims to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
Records
She currently holds the course record for the Old Dominion 100 Memorial, the Swinging Bridge 50K, the Holiday Lake 50K, the Rocky Raccoon 100, the Frederick (Maryland) Marathon, and the Crater Lake Marathon.
She has set the record for the fastest female 100 mile trail race.
Personal life
Shelton enjoys surfing and has worked as a lifeguard. She now works as a web designer and frequents Letsrun.com. Shelton lives in Ashland, Oregon, a location she enjoys because of its extensive running trails. Her favorite authors include Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Hunter S. Thompson. She is in a relationship with fellow elite ultrarunner Erik Skaggs.
