Maeve Patricia Mary Theresa Gilmore, known professionally as Maeve Gilmore (1917 – 3 August 1983) was a British painter, sculptor, and writer.

Personal background

Gilmore was the wife and biographer of the author Mervyn Peake. They met at the Westminster School of Art and married in 1937. They had three children named Sebastian, Fabian, and Clare.

Professional background

Titus Awakes

About 1960, Gilmore's husband, Mervyn Peake, began working on his fourth novel in the Gormenghast series, following Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone, which was published in 1959. This fourth in the series was given the editorial title of Titus Awakes. Suffering from Parkinson's disease, Peake became too ill to finish the project.

In the late 1950s, while writing Titus Alone, Peake's health began to decline. His novel Titus Awakes remained unfinished, as the author succumbed to illness, dying on November 17, 1968. In the mid–1970s, Gilmore picked up the unfinished manuscript and wrote a version of Titus Awakes, which she renamed Search Without End.
