Born Lidia Motika circa 1946 in a seaport town known originally as Pula in Istria, but place and family names were changed by law when Istria was annexed by Yugoslavia, so she became Lidia Moticchio from Pola. She and her family fled Istria to Trieste and lived in a refugee camp until visas became available to immigrate to the U.S.
She married Felice (or Felix) Bastianich, a fellow Istrian, in 1966 at around the age of 19 or 20, but they divorced after 31 years of marriage and 2 children, although she is keeping his surname professionally.
Lidia is the co-owner of "Felidia" and "Becco" and "Esca" restaurants in New York and "Lidia's" in Kansas City as well as "Lidia's Pittsburgh" (opened in 2002), as well as host of her own TV cooking show, a 52-part PBS series. She is the author of three cookbooks.
She is a naturalized citizen of the U.S.
