==Early life and education==
Born and raised on ], ], he is the youngest of 12 children born to Lloyd and Winnie MacDonald.

He completed his Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting at ] and his Bachelor's degree in cello at ]. At McGill, He assisted both the McGill Symphony Orchestra and Opera McGill; conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble; and formed his own orchestras for various performances. At Memorial, he conducted several ensembles and was a member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra from 1997-2004. He has studied conducting with ], ], ], Gustav Meier, Donald Buell, Douglas Dunsmore, and at the ] with Michael Jinbo. Martin is also an alumnus of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, 1992–1995; and the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra, 1995-1999. He has a strong ] tradition in his family and has toured extensively with them around Europe and North America.

Martin MacDonald (born June 14, 1977) is an award-winning Canadian conductor.


Symphony Nova Scotia

Martin has served as Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia since 2008, a position supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. During the past two seasons he has conducted over seventy performances, led the orchestra on tour, covered all concerts and repertoire, and several of his performances have been recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Concerts on Demand. His upcoming third season sees an increased performance schedule of classical, ballet, pops, and education programs including his debut on the flagship Celebrity series.

In 2010, Martin was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award in Orchestral Conducting, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts for his work with Symphony Nova Scotia.

National Academy Orchestra of Canada

Martin served as Associate Conductor of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada (based in Hamilton, Ontario), Boris Brott, Artistic Director for three seasons. Some memorable performances with the NAO included Debussy's La Mer, Beethoven's Third, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Symphonies, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with pianist Stewart Goodyear – Martin conducted on every performance in repertoire ranging from classical, ballet, opera, pops, education, and contemporary repertoire including world premieres of some works. In 2009, Martin returned to the NAO to guest conduct two different programs.

In addition to his conducting roles with the NAO, Martin managed the orchestra and played a key role in programming, artistic development, auditions, and coordination of this national training program.

Other Musical Activities

Martin has worked with the orchestras of Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay; the Cadaques Orchestra in Barcelona, Spain; and the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, Italy. Most recently, in 2010 Martin stepped in on short notice to conduct the Dalhousie University Symphony Orchestra in their annual Concert Night performance, conducting several excerpts of classical, operatic, and contemporary repertoire. He has appeared twice as a guest conductor with Nova Sinfonia in Halifax with a return engagement in 2011, and he will be a guest of the Saskatchewan Orchestral Association in November 2010. He has conducted several community orchestras across Canada and the Cape Breton Orchestra. In 2008, he was one of only two Canadians chosen to compete in the IX Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Barcelona, Spain. Also in 2008, he was named to The Chronicle Herald’s Honour Roll for Excellence in the Arts.
