Purpose of use

For fair use on The Stone Angel (film):

  • The image is placed in the infobox at the top of article about the film, to show the primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for.
  • It is used for identification and critical commentary of the work for which it was created.
  • It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone.
  • Use of the image does not in any way harm the ability of the companies concerned to sell the work.
  • Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original artwork, namely the artist's providing graphic design services and in turn marketing films to the public.
Replaceable?

As a film poster, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the images from the movie poster would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.

Licensing

It is believed that the use of scaled-down, low-resolution images of posters qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of the United States.
