Thank you for taking the time to improve Misplaced Pages. (Show me more)
Please place new discussions at the bottom of the page.
This is Cymru.lass's talk page, where you can send messages and comments to Cymru.lass.
My personal policies
  • I prefer to keep discussions in one place. This means if you post on my talk page, I'll reply here, unless you specify otherwise. If I post on yours, please reply there. (But please leave me a talkback!)
  • I am highly forgetful. {{reply}}, {{reply}}, {{reply}}. Please. Even when it's a discussion on a Template talk:, Misplaced Pages talk:, or Talk: page.
  • Please don't revert petty talkpage vandalism or personal attacks, unless it targets someone besides me, violates WP:BLP and/or outs me. I can handle nasty comments, and I'm really big on transparency/keeping all comments accessible. That said, I might collapse a section with particularly nasty comments, but I generally won't remove the comments. (I reserve the right to go back on this if it's something outrageously egregious.)
  • I'm (relatively) smart. That said, I sometimes often make stupid mistakes. Please assume good faith. If you believe I've made a mistake, let me know. Also, link to policy/guideline/essay pages so I can read up on where I went wrong. I'll set about fixing my mistake as soon as I can. I'm very nice and I don't bite. People who don't assume good faith make me a bit angry, though.
  • You don't have to let me know about declined speedy nominations if it's not because I screwed up. I usually don't watchlist pages I've nommed for speedy deletion unless I think the page creator might remove the speedy tag. That said, I'm completely open to being contacted about why you declined my speedy, especially if it's because I made an error in judgement. I do that sometimes, and I'd like to do it less, so any comments about why my nomination wasn't valid. If, however, it's just a matter of me A7-ing an article which subsequently got improved, don't feel like you have to notify me.
Talking to me:
  • If I left you a message: please answer on your talk page, then notify my talk page.
  • If you leave me a message: I will answer on my talk page, then place {{Talkback|Cymru.lass}} on your talkpage.
  • Click here to leave me a new message.

Lydenberg Edits

Hi Cymru.lass! Thank you for your advice and editing of my Harry M. Lydenberg page. I was having a really tough time figuring out the block quote indent. I made it 'go public', and I'm hoping that's all I need to do before tomorrow. If you see any other technical things that need fixing, please feel free. Thanks again...much appreciated! -Anne Anneelias (talk) 00:57, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

Talk Page Archiving

I saw you needed help with talk page archiving. The most common 2 bots for this are ClueBot III and MiszaBot III. To use ClueBot III, you need to add the User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis template with instructions given here. To use MiszaBot III, you need to add the User:MiszaBot/config template with instructions given here. Hope this helps. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 335° 0' 45" NET 22:20, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice I ended up going with manual archiving because I want to not only have old discussions stored somewhere, but I also want to bring bits of "fragmented" discussions (i.e., ones that took place on two user talk pages) into my archives. --- cymru lass(background check) 22:38, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
I see what you mean. I do the same as well. In fact, there are these two templates to help sort out fragmented discussions. I usually tend to defragment conversations while they're still fresh and then let an archiving bot to the rest. It's usually easiest that way. I could set up one of the bots to archive your talk page if you still want a bot to carry out the task and you're having trouble setting it up. I have MiszaBot III set up on my talk page. Just look for the User:MiszaBot/config template near the top of the page. It might help you set up the bot for your talk page. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 342° 56' 15" NET 22:51, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm still not sold on the whole bot-archiving thing... Is there a way I could set it so that each archive is comprised of conversations from only one or two months? --- cymru lass(background check) 22:54, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Indeed there is! The archives can be sorted according to the months and years of each archived section. You just need to modify the archive parameter accordingly. For example, setting the archive parameter to User talk:Cymru.lass/%(monthname)s-%(year)d will give this.

class="wikitable "

The sections will then be archived according to the date. Hope this helps. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 350° 5' 15" NET 23:20, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
So how would I go about filling the template out? Would I have to have my archives named /May-2010, etc., or could I just keep the /Archive 1 format I'm using now? --- cymru lass(background check) 23:27, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
I think you would need to have your archives named /May-2010 if you want dated archives. I don't think you can have dated archives with the /Archive 1 format. Then again, the pages are created automatically by the bot. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 356° 12' 30" NET 23:44, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
True that. I'm still undecided, though. --- cymru lass(background check) 00:04, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Once you've figured out what format you want, let me know what archive names you want and what you want at the top of each archive and I'll be able to set up the bot for you. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 2° 47' 15" NET 00:11, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Great! Thanks. --- cymru lass(background check) 00:14, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Quick Bit Of Advice

I noticed that you nominated these two pages for deletion. In these cases, it possible to accelerate the deletion of theses pages via the criteria for speedy deletion rather than sending them to XfD, since this will probably result in a speedy delete anyway. Generally, it's best to use WP:CSD if it's obvious that a page should be deleted and there will be no opposition to its deletion. Hope this helps. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 346° 52' 30" NET 23:07, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't sure if they should be speedied or not, so I just decided to play it safe. What criteria would User talk:Vaibhav232323 fit? --- cymru lass(background check) 23:15, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I believe it comes under, A10 - Recently created article that duplicates an existing topic. However, I would think that this criteria would be mainly for the article space, but this seems to be the closest criteria. It also violates the user page guidelines, so it can be speedy deleted for that reason. I think it may be time to create U4! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 352° 59' 15" NET 23:31, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
That U4 might be a good idea. Some stuff obviously merits speedying but doesn't exactly fit one category, especially when it comes to the User namespace. --- cymru lass(background check) 23:36, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Seems like the community are against U4. Oh well, it was worth a try! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 213° 16' 45" NET 14:13, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh, well. I do see what they mean though. Also, it's a bit of a fuzzy area. For example, User talk:Vaibhav232323 was obviously a deletable one, because it was obviously not a draft of a new article or a work-in-progress. There are also pages which are obviously not deletable, such as an actively edited draft. But then there's a gray area that'd be hard to define. --- cymru lass(background check) 20:08, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
I guess some of them could qualify under A10 or G12 and the rest can be kept. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 341° 7' 30" NET 22:44, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Parameter removed

Hi there! This is just a quick note that I have removed the "review-needed" parameter on your editor review notice, as your talk page kept showing up in the backlog. Of course, you can still display that banner to request more reviews. Thanks. Netalarm 22:17, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Heh, whoops! I forgot to remove it . Thanks for doing it for me! --- cymru lass(background check) 23:21, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Hindu terrorism

You're a braver person than I to fix the external links. :-) I started to do it but decided it was too much work to spend on an article that has almost no chance of surviving ('course I could be wrong). Your user page is very amusing!--Bbb23 (talk) 00:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm told I have a weird sense of humour, so that explains the user page
I'm one of those people who is a slob in their own home but does peoples' dishes for them because they bother me I'm that way with copyediting, too. If I'm perusing a page and I see improperly formatted anything, I have the uncontrollable urge to edit it. I'm the only person I know who both reads and copyedits the political sections of the newspaper... --- cymru lass(background check) 00:11, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Heh. I'm not as nice as you, or at least not as neurotic. I clean my own dishes (very tidy) and leave other people's dishes for them to clean, although I may leave their kitchen if the mess bothers me. If you feel some uncontrollable urge to continue this little chat (not that you have to), you don't have to tag my Talk page. I'm watching you. Thanks for the unintended education on the emoticons - never used them on Misplaced Pages before.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:27, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Good to know, Big Brother
Kidding! (Again with the bad humour.) Yeah, a mentor of mine introduced me to smileys... He created a monster; I can't stop using them. Actually, I think I'm addicted to templates in general. I'm also notorious for carrying out random conversations in my edit summaries to peoples' talkpages. Edit summaries on peoples' talk pages are pretty much pointless, but my neuroticism kicks in if I don't use them on every single edit --- cymru lass(background check) 00:31, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Help?

{{helpme}} Can't believe I'm actually using this template but... I need help and I can't figure out where to get it. Where do I go to report copyright infringement of the Misplaced Pages logo on another website? (For example here and here) --- cymru lass(background check) 03:58, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

I think you need to contact Mike Godwin, but I doubt the Foundation will take action against this petty stuff, so I'd ignore it (unless they are using the WP logo for commercial purposes). It's Uncyclopedia, y'know, making fun of us is their job? /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 04:11, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
True that, I guess. Thanks! --- cymru lass(background check) 04:12, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
(I wrote this twenty minutes ago and then had all kinds of problems with my internet connection) I think you might have better luck submitting this question to a wider audience at Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions. I looked at the first link and I think that it may fall under fair use as a work of satire. I attempted some searches and found some related material but nothing right on point. See e.g., User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 43#Improper use of the Misplaced Pages Logo. I have in the past emailed users who are using our copyrighted material without proper attribution under CC-BY-SA/the GFDL and have had success with getting them to voluntarily take down the material or place proper attribution. You could try asking yourself, though this is a bit different since the Wikimedia Foundation owns the copyright, as opposed to material from articles that is infringed, the copyright of which is owned by Misplaced Pages contributors. The problem with enforcing offsite copyright violations is that it's easy to ask but, ultimately, the only way to force removal is legal action. I suppose you could send an email to User:Mike Godwin (general counsel for the Wikimedia Foundation).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:34, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I agree with what fetchcomms said, though. I don't think Uncyclopedia will really care if Misplaced Pages just requests that they not use the logo and legal action is probably not worth it. Ah well. --- cymru lass(background check) 13:52, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Are you really that butthurt about a little bit of satire on your precious site? I try to be helpful on here too and all, but seriously, if you are not allowed to photoshop the[REDACTED] logo on places for fun in your world, then how dull is your world really? Sorry, but i simply do not understand people who do not understand a little satire. --93.163.53.245 (talk) 12:43, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for the welcome; you're very kind. I do in fact have an account, but for various reason I no longer use it except on very rare occasions I'm trying to edit from behind a blocked institutional IP. --81.153.109.200 (talk) 05:30, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Duly noted. I used to edit from an IP, too, but my IP's dynamic and I have to shut my computer down every few hours to keep it alive and I got more than a little frustrated with the constantly changing IP. But I digress... Happy editing! --- cymru lass(background check) 13:56, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
… and to think I created an account so I could have a cool username and signature! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 312° 6' 15" NET 20:48, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Nice! Though a cool sig could be created for an IP thru template subst'ing. There's a long-term IP contributor floating around out there who created the code for a template for his/her sig and just had someone create it as a subpage of the IP's talk page or something I'm just one of those obsessive compulsive people who likes to keep track of things and I couldn't do it from an IP --- cymru lass(background check) 22:28, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
True, although I wouldn't have been able to include the idiom "Set Sail For The Seven Seas" in my signature on its own. I would have had to put the IP in the signature, which wouldn't have the same effect. I believe the long-term IP contributor is User:220.101.28.25 and they do indeed have a signature page. Also, I do like my current account name and it's nice to be able to get extra user rights to help you out. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 345° 13' 0" NET 23:00, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
True that! How long've you been editing WP? --- cymru lass(background check) 23:09, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
About 1+1⁄4 years. My first edit was on 24 June 2009 and it still survives today! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 351° 37' 45" NET 23:26, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Nice! I joined in May, so it's been.... 5 months on this account. But I'd been an IP for ages before that. --- cymru lass(background check) 23:30, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Come to think of it, my first edit was the reason I have an account. I like the idea of keeping my edits together. Otherwise, someone else can take credit for your work! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 214° 16' 15" NET 14:17, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Same here. If I had had a static IP, I'd always wonder what would happen if it did change, and someone ended up using my old address for vandalism. I think that happened with an IP contributor floating around there somewhere. --- cymru lass(background check) 20:11, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Well, I wouldn't affect you, since you would then have a different IP. However, you'd then have to rebuild your edit count from scratch! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 342° 11' 45" NET 22:48, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Service Awards

I noticed that you have the service awards template on your userpage, but you've commented it out for some reason. Is the problem due to the template itself? If so, I might be able to fix it up. Thanks. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 312° 46' 0" NET 20:51, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Nah, I just don't really want to display it right now, but I wanted to be able to have the template readily accessible in case I ever wanted it :3 I've actually never looked at it! --- cymru lass(background check) 22:29, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. I guess as the creator of the template, I like to go round making sure it's working properly. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 345° 51' 0" NET 23:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
You made that template? Nice work! --- cymru lass(background check) 23:08, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Yep! I made it to go alongside the renovation of the services awards. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 352° 51' 0" NET 23:31, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
That's pretty cool --- cymru lass(background check) 23:34, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
It seems like quite a good number of editors are usings it now. Although no one seems to use the caption customisation, the pièce de résistance of the service awards template! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 215° 21' 0" NET 14:21, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Heh. I didn't know about the caption customisation! --- cymru lass(background check) 20:13, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Not many people do! It's all documented here under caption customisation. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 343° 51' 45" NET 22:55, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Nice! I'll take a look when I get the chance. --- cymru lass(background check) 22:57, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Reply

Hello again Cymru.lass. Thank you for the information on both accounts, informing me about people's behaviour on their own talk pages and the details on Twinkle. Just to clarify: I am British-born to parents who came from pre-1992 Yugoslavia, the Cyrillic script was and continues to be used down the east side of the former territory in the lands akin to where Orthodox Christians form a majority; that is my religion and background. To that end, I can speak, read and write Serbian, Macedonian and Bulgarian, all of which can be written in Cyrillic. I also have a reasonable knowledge of Ukrainian and Russian (and to a lesser extent, Belarussian) that are also Cyrillic script languages. Note one thing however, the term reading Cyrillic is complex. Unlike the Greek alphabet, it not used for one single language, neither is it used for languages of one single family. In fact after the Roman alphabet, Cyrillic is the second most widely used script in the world with regards number of languages (not users). If we are talking users, I think the Chinese script comes first; dominated mainly by the languages of China but also used for languages beyond. My point is that just as every language using the Roman script has its own orthography, so too is this the case with Cyrillic. And if you are familiar with Russian, just looking at some of the scripts used for languages formerly within the Soviet Union and those still spoken in Russia, you can barely recognise the Cyrillic shape of them. Unlike the Roman script which has 26 legal characters and a number of diacritics, there seems to be no restriction to any Cyrillic imports. This is how the South Slavic languages (esp Serbian) came to deploy /J/ directly from Latin; this way we can uphold a phonetical system of one grapheme per phoneme, so Russian/Bulgarian /ю/ became Serbian/Macedonian /ју/. Then there are basic differences, Russian /e/ is either pronounced "ye" (stressed) or "ee" (unstressed). So the pronunciation of my name in Russian would be "Ye-vli-ch'is" (the /i/ softening the /k/ that it follows). To demonstrate a near-correct guide to a Russian, I'd need to write /Євлъєкъис/. So what is your background? I've seen your user page, are you a Welsh girl? Or are you American to Welsh parents? I'm particularly interested in the Cymru forming part of your user name. Evlekis (Евлекис) 00:04, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm what's called a Heinz 57 mutt—I've got a bit of everything in me, including a little Welsh. The cymru part of my username comes with my adoration of the Welsh language, which I desperately wish I spoke. I'll have to wait a while to learn Welsh, though.
Wow. You speak many languages. I tip my hat to you. (I'm a bit of a language nerd) I only speak English and Spanish for now--- cymru lass(background check) 00:15, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
Cuiously enough, yes I am very enthusiastic about all languages but the few I listed are all closely related and knowledge of one surmises certain knowledge of the others. It is also a coincidence that I happen to be in Wales now as I write this; last night when you posted the above message I was at work - in England - but I have come to Chepstow for the day because I love it here. In this town, you will not hear any Welsh and most of the people tend to have some English connection. So you're of 57 backgrounds and Welsh is one of them. I admit it's an interesting language too, more remote from English than Spanish and the Slavic languages I named that are written in Cyrillic. Seems hard to believe but when you examine the Welsh language, you see how different it is. So how do you come to know Spanish? I'm now trying to learn it and I am very fortunate that this is one language on which you can obtain a Michel Thomas course, I swear by them, as he was the world's finest language teacher. To that end, I am confident I will speak Spanish as well as you! Evlekis (Евлекис) 08:54, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
My mother's been speaking Spanish since she was 17, and I grew up hearing her speak Spanish while talking to patients on the phone (she's a doctor), so I've always had a little basic knowledge of Spanish. I got really serious about learning it once I began high school. I really want to go into linguistics; it's a subject area that fascinates me. By the way, since you're in Wales, you simply must go to the Wales Millennium Centre and Roald Dahl Plass (they're right next to each other). I haven't been to Wales yet, but my favourite TV series was shot around the Millenium Centre and it's pretty awesome. --- cymru lass(background check) 23:40, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Well done to you on having picked up the language in your given circumstance. It is far from ideal but you obviously did well. Linguistics is a great interest of mine too, and you're in the right place: Misplaced Pages is a good starting block for this topic. I'm sorry I didn't go to those places but I was only in Chepstow across the Severn Bridge from where I live. I see more of Cardiff when I look across the Bristol Channel from Weston-Super-Mare. Atleast from there one can see the Millennium Stadium if not the arts place. Still, I'll bare all in mind when next visiting Cardiff!! :) Evlekis (Евлекис) 20:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

I've had a look at User:Cymru.lass/archive notice and added a few tweaks. I noticed that you had a section saying this.

In this case, it would be Talk:Insane Clown Posse.

This would cause the template to link to Talk:Insane Clown Posse regardless of what the page in question was! :O Set Sail For The Seven Seas 189° 26' 15" NET 12:37, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Whoops! The text was copy-pasted from a personal note to an IP and then template-ified. I must've forgotten to remove that... Thanks! Other than that, how'd I do? I think I got the coding for parameters right, but I'm not sure. See User:Cymru.lass/lab rat for the tests I've done.

:Oh, I was also wondering how I can get the circly-icon thing to display as part of a paragraph, like in {{uw-vandal}} --- cymru lass(background check) 14:44, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Never mind on that second one, I see you've done that. Thanks!! --- cymru lass(background check) 14:47, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
It seems like I'm one step ahead of you, my friend! It looks like you've done quite well! I'll add the subst check templates to it as well. Loving the sandbox name! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 216° 36' 15" NET 14:26, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! As for the name, I already have a sandbox named "Sandbox" (used for working on articles), so I couldn't name it that. I was feeling particularly funky when I was testing out the templates, and "testcases" seemed too stuffy, hence the quirky name --- cymru lass(background check) 20:16, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Well it sure put a smile a my face! All, I have is a sandbox and testcases page. However, it's all I need especially since I usually check everything in the preview mode and you don't need a sandbox for that! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 344° 54' 30" NET 22:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm a fan of the preview button, too, but up until a week ago, I was on a childish PC. I had to work out some of the more puzzling issues in my sandbox. (I've been notoriously bad with geoboxes and coordinate templates.) --- cymru lass(background check) 23:01, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
The geoboxes and coordinate templates use really complex code, so you do need to be careful when editing them. If you're having trouble with the more complex templates, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 349° 23' 30" NET 23:17, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Actually, my troubles with those templates have been much more embarrassing, involving simply using them. Back then, I wouldn't've edited a template using a nine-foot pole to type out the code --- cymru lass(background check) 23:21, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
You needn't be embarrassed about using those templates. They can be tricky to use if you don't understand the format. I've done some editing with these templates, so I can help out with that as well. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 352° 33' 0" NET 23:30, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Good to know! I'll drop you a line if I ever need help in that area. Mark my words, I probably will. --- cymru lass(background check) 23:41, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
No problem! I'll remember that! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 1° 18' 30" NET 00:05, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Any ideas on where I should start with template editing? --- cymru lass(background check) 00:08, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not too sure. One of the things I do is standardisation of templates and their documentation, like Template:Current daylight saving offset documentation and Template:File deletion template notice, which hold common documentation for several templates. If you find more templates where Template:File deletion template notice can be used, you can transclude it onto the relevant documentation subpages. There are examples under "see also" at Template:File deletion template notice. Something slightly easier you could do is look out for templates with documentation that isn't on a subpage. You can then move the documentation to the subpage. An example of this can be seen at Template:SD warn-needed and Template:SD warn-needed/doc where I moved the documentation from the former to the latter. On another note, I noticed that your edit here caused a template loop! However, it wasn't quite your fault. The Singlenotice template is used instead of the documentation so the documentation subpage is redundant. Good luck! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 12° 29' 45" NET 00:49, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Whoops! I didn't know that... Should I remove the original documentation then? --- cymru lass(background check) 01:53, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
I've already sorted it out, it's fine now. You may also want to take a look at Category:Misplaced Pages template cleanup. Not all templates are full of magic words and parser functions, there are some that only have text! Here are Template:Generic Merit Badge and Template:Fictional animal category, two templates where the documentation is on the template page rather than the documentation subpage. See if you can fix them up as I did with Template:SD warn-needed and Template:SD warn-needed/doc. Good luck! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 299° 2' 30" NET 19:56, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
All right. I'll do those when I get the chance—I'm a little busy with work right now --- cymru lass(background check) 22:50, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Good job! The rationale behind moving documentation to subpages is so that it can still be edited when the template itself is protected. One example of this is Template:!, which is fully protected but the documentation can still be edited. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 274° 15' 30" NET 18:17, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh, that reminded me of a question I had. What's cascading protection? --- cymru lass(background check) 18:20, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Funny you should ask that! I was just dealing with something to do with cascading protection earlier today! Basically, cascade protecting a page will fully protect the page and extend that full protection to all the templates transcluded on that page. For example, if your user talk page was fully protected with the cascading option then the following templates would also be fully protected: Template:divbox, Template:editor review, Template:archive banner, Template:talkback, Template:talkback, Template:uw-pleasewarn and of course Template:=) . This because they're all transcluded on your talk page. This option is used so that all of the visible content on a page can be restricted from editing. You can read about it here. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 279° 57' 15" NET 18:39, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Interesting. So I'm guessing the main page is cascade protected? --- cymru lass(background check) 18:44, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Definitely! In fact, this is a classic case. It's security is so tight that it is not only protected itself through cascade protection but cascaded protected ten times by having it transcluded onto ten different cascade protected pages! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 282° 12' 44" NET 18:48, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Nice. I suppose it would be kind of awful if the Main Page got vandalized By the way, I've gone ahead and done the doc pages for those templates! I think. It might have been a dream, though... :P --- cymru lass(background check) 18:55, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
It has got vandalised in the past, quite badly! I noticed you'd done the doc pages and really well for that matter, well done! I mentioned the rationale for this above. It's more important for semiprotected templates but it's recommended for all. It's even more important for fully protected templates, but we'd need to ask an administrator to deal with the template side of things since we're not administrators yet! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 289° 30' 0" NET 19:18, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for helping out with all these template-y questions! --- cymru lass(background check) 20:32, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
No problem! By the way, are you a mathematician by any chance? Since you mentioned the TI-84, which is a graphical calculator. A good knowledge of mathematics can actually help when using templates here, especially those at Category:Date mathematics templates. Also, how familiar are you with the various magic words and parser functions at the moment? Which ones do you still find confusing? If there are any, let me know and I'll explain how they work. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 326° 17' 45" NET 21:45, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm not a professional mathematician, but I am very mathematically minded—I was doing high-school algebra and geometry in fourth and fifth grade. As far as magic words and parser functions, I'm a bit fuzzy. I know what magic words are, but don't have any memorized, outside of __TOC__ __NOTOC__ __FORCETOC__ __NOINDEX__ {{CURRENTYEAR}} {{CURRENTMONTH}} {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} {{REVISIONUSER}} {{NUMBEROFPAGES}} and a couple of pagename ones. As for parser functions, I'm not just fuzzy, I'm trying to see with my contacts out They befuddle me. I understand their purpose, I can just never keep the specific uses in my head. I did do a sort of am-I-likely-online test-thing (checking time and day of the week), which is transcluded at the top of this page from User:Cymru.lass/Sandbox. (I can never remember to update my status otherwise; 99% of the time it's at around.) But that thing took me several hours. Help with understanding parser functions would be appreciated. Thanks! --- cymru lass(background check) 22:12, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

That's brilliant! If you can do that then you're well on your way to understanding magic words and parser functions. It took me a while to get my head around it! It works well for weekdays, however for the weekend it will report you as online 8:00-15:00 and as at school 0:00-8:00 and 15:00-24:00! . This is because the first value gives 1, the second value gives 0, the ifeq compares the two reporting a mismatch and saying you're at school. Anyway, this is what I gather from what I see. Firstly this is the code used.

{{#ifeq: {{#ifeq: {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} > 8 | 1 | 0 }} | {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} < 15 | 1 | 0 }} | 0 | 1 }} | {{#ifexpr: {{#time: N | -8 hours }} < 6 | 1 | 0 }} | I'm probably online | I'm probably at school and offline }}

This bit

{{#ifeq: {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} > 8 | 1 | 0 }} | {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} < 15 | 1 | 0 }} | 0 | 1 }} (1)

appears to give 0 at 8:00-15:00 (school hours) and 1 otherwise (free hours). This bit

{{#ifexpr: {{#time: N | -8 hours }} < 6 | 1 | 0 }} (2)

appears to give 1 on a weekday and 0 on a weekend. This bit

{{#ifeq: (1) | (2) | I'm probably online | I'm probably at school and offline }}

then compares the two. So it will report you as online during free hours on a weekday and during school hours on a weekend and at school during school hours on a weekday and during free hours on a weekend! I also noticed that you've been experimenting with Template:Current daylight saving offset in Western US and Canada. It's quite a useful template and I'm looking to create versions for other countries. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 237° 21' 30" NET 15:49, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Huh. Maybe I could take out the "weekend test" bit of code and wrap the whole thing in a code that says, if it's the weekend, ignore this. Would {{#ifexpr: {{#time: N | -8 hours }} < 6 | | I might be online }} work?
As for the daylight savings offset thing, I'm willing to help you out if you want; just let me know --- cymru lass(background check) 16:46, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
That would work, where is
{{#ifeq: {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} > 8 | 1 | 0 }} | {{#ifexpr: {{#time: H | -8 hours }} < 15 | 1 | 0 }} | I'm probably at school and offline | I'm probably online }}
and it should give the required results. Thanks for the offer to help out with the daylight savings offset thing, but it's on hold at the moment. However, I'll let you know when I carry on with it again. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 284° 1' 15" NET 18:56, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll change that. Could you believe I spent about 2 hours on that? I even drew little logic diagrams and everything --- cymru lass(background check) 19:00, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
That sounds really sweet! Well, I'm glad I was able to help out. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 302° 8' 45" NET 20:08, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

GOCE copy edit drive

Greetings, the Misplaced Pages Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Misplaced Pages Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Well it certainly wasn't me on Dr Who production, and I was not aware of any one with my name like that. Your name looks like you might be near Cardiff, so perhaps you could pop over and ask! @the wub, thank you! I'd say thanks in Welsh, but I'm afraid I lack any knowledge whatsoever of the language, except "cymru". I won't get the chance to start learning for a few years
@Salvio, HI! Long time no talk! Thanks for the birthday wishes!! I love Italian (don't let my Spanish homies hear me saying that; they'll kill me :P)! You're definitely not too late, at least by my clock! --- cymru lass(background check) 00:38, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I believe "thanks" in welsh is "diolch". There's always The Welsh Misplaced Pages if you're up for learning the language. Spanish and Italian are very similar languages, so it shouldn't be too bad. Forgetting does indeed make it that more special! Suprises are great! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 16° 13' 45" NET 01:04, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the Welsh tip ! Hahaha, the fact that Italian and Spanish makes the playful rivalry between my Spanish and Italian friends all the more "serious". --- cymru lass(background check) 01:09, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

All that and to think Italy and Spain don't even share a border! I guess you should learn French then! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 321° 8' 15" NET 21:24, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Yep, I'm taking it next year—despite the fact that the French accent is the only accent I can't imitate. I can even do accents when reading (Romanized) Arabic and Hindi, but when I try to read French, I sound like a strangled cat --- cymru lass(background check) 01:03, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
It takes time and practice to develop these things unless you've grown up with it. In that case, it becomes second nature. Can you actually read Arabic and Hindi? That's way better than French! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 325° 37' 15" NET 21:42, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
I can't read or understand Arabic and Hindi, but if I'm given a written-out (i.e., in the Roman alphabet) transliteration, I can do a passable accent. I pick up accents really easily—which isn't always a good thing. I spent 3 weeks in New Zealand almost five years ago, and I still speak with a en-zedder intonation and use their slang—which confuses the heck out of people, especially since I don't speak with an accent --- cymru lass(background check) 23:54, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
That could come in useful at times! One of my friends is a kiwi, so I sort of know some of the slang. Do you really sound like a strangled cat when you try to read French? It can't be that bad! You know what a strangled cat sounds like? All I've ever heard are cats squealing at one another! Now that's what you call a cat fight! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 3° 31' 30" NET 00:14, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, I don't know what a strangled cat sounds like per se, but I'm guessing it's pretty close to me speaking French. I was in a French opera once (Carmen), and it took me forever to make sure I didn't sound like a fool! --- cymru lass(background check) 00:36, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I didn't think so. I would be surprised if you did. Isn't that going round in circles? If you were in a French opera, then you must have a good accent! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 14° 10' 45" NET 00:56, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Lucky for me, opera singers use softer accents than the typical Fresh accent when singing opera, at least where I live. --- cymru lass(background check) 01:44, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
I guess in that case you can get away with it! If you did end up in a real French opera, then you'd have to try even harder! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 267° 1' 45" NET 17:48, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha, true that! --- cymru lass(background check) 23:06, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs
Discussions are underway to elect our inaugural group of GOCE Coordinators. Guild members and Drive participants are invited to have a look at the Coordinators page and join the discussion on its associated talk page.

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Category:CSI: NY episodes

Hi there, I noticed your note at Category talk:CSI: NY episodes when I was going through empty categories to delete, as it's empty again. Considering what you wrote I'm wondering if it was improperly emptied. Since you are clearly more familiar with the situation than me, I'd appreciate it if you could look in to this and either repopulate the category, or tag it with a C1 speedy, depending on what you find. Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 04:22, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Erm, I should probably preface this by saying I've never watched CSI.
That said, my main issue with the deletion is the reason the category wasn't populated was because its members were redirected without consensus. This caused a lot of outcry, but apparently, some of the redirected articles were never reverted. Lists of the CSI:NY episodes can be found at Template:Infobox CSI: NY season 1 episode list, etc. I actually have no clue what to do with them! --- cymru lass(background check) 08:40, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January!

I apologize. I wasn't, in fact, being snarky. I occasionally patrol the categories of requested edits to see if any requests have been made in error (e.g., changes have been requested to an unprotected page). I then use either {{EsP}} or {{EP}} to let the people know that the page is, in fact unprotected. Next time I'll check to see when a page was last unprotected. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding. --- cymru.lass(background check) 20:13, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

It's time to get back up to speed...

Happy Holidays.

I noticed that you are listed as a participant in the outlines wikiproject.

Things went pretty slow from Oct 2009 to Sept 2010, but have been picking up speed since October 2010.

Overhauls are under way on:

We can use all the help we can get on those. They especially need annotations and missing links. Please take a look and see what you can do.

One of the big gaps we've been working on is sports. So far, we have:

The outlines listed above include descriptive annotations to aid in topic selection. Please add as many missing annotations as you can.

You may have noticed some major sports are missing:

If you are feeling ambitious, please feel free to build one or more of these.

But don't feel restricted to sports. There are many other major subjects we haven't gotten to yet. See Portal:Contents/Outlines to look for gaps.

To assist in the maintenance (such as spotting and reversing vandalism) of the outlines and their support pages, please watchlist them. At a minimum, please watchlist the support pages:

The wikiproject page has been overhauled. It includes tasks, guidelines, and a participants list.

We need your help. Please look over the project and the various outlines to see where you can contribute the best. Thank you.

What are your favorite subjects?

Happy New Year!

Edit on Fred Heron

I had posted that as I had received a phone call from a fellow friend, who had worked with Fred in the California Youth Authority as his Teacher's Assistant for many years, and had studied the bible with Fred's wife, Betty. I am a dear and personal friend of Fred, and this is personal information from family. He collapsed about a week prior. We still do not know how he died. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaivarri (talkcontribs) 05:45, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Please re-read the discussion that you started on Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard: It stated "Someone being alive or dead is a fact that must be reliably sourced". When you explicitly add him back to the category of "Living persons" without a source, you are breaking this policy. Please do not revert my edit of removing that category again unless you can demonstrate via sources that he is alive (which you can't, because he isn't). --Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 08:34, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

The Count Of Monte Cristo (James Behr musical)

Thanks for your note about this page. I don't think this musical is notable (it failed a previous AFD). James Behr may be notable, I haven't looked close enough to say one way or the other. If you think he merits an entry, please feel free to move or merge the relevant material, but note that this is almost certainly an autobiography or a very close conflict of interest, complete with legal threats about attempts to remove it. I prefer not to facilitate these sorts of editors, so I've limited my action so far to cutting out junk from the entry. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 23:29, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

Outline collaboration

Here's the latest addition to the religion section of Portal:Contents/Outlines. Misplaced Pages has rich coverage on this subject. Very interesting, especially from sociological and historical perspectives.

This is a call to all members of the Outline WikiProject and outline aficionados to help refine this outline. It needs annotations, missing topics added, and the entries in the general concepts section placed in more specific sections. It needs your editing skills. Let's turn it into a beehive!

Come join in on the fun and get acquainted with members of the Outline WikiProject.

The Transhumanist 04:58, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: I had no idea this religion was so extensive or that it had so many followers. Hope to see you on the outline!

What is a symbol?

I have no objection to your recent edit to Coordinated Universal Time but I disagree with the edit summary: "Symbol: okay, how's initialism? a symbol is something like $, %, ^, or ®". If you look at the brochure which sets forth the International System of Units and which has been adopted as law in most countries (perhaps with minor variations and translation into the local language) you will find that certain letter combinations are defined to be symbols when used to designate units of measure (e.g. m, s, MJ, mg). In the case of UTC, this letter group seems to have evolved in a more informal manner amongst several scientific organizations, so I am not aware of an authoritative source that defines whether it is a symbol, abbreviation, or initialism. Edit conflicts

Hi, well here I am taking you up on your offer! I seem to keep getting edit conflicts on the article. A little while ago I tried bundling all my edits into a really big single edit, taking about 30 minutes putting them together, but as I posted on the talk page, when I got another edit conflict while trying to submit my edit, I must have done something silly because I seem to have lost of all that editing. Is there any way of getting them back? I am assuming there isn't. I'm slightly regretting the wasted effort. I'll just have to be more careful in future. A Saku (talk) 04:07, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Overstrand Hall

Hi. I'm not a great fan of over-hasty "proposed deletion" tags. I find they are somewhat discouraging. I created this article about 1 minute ago, and its notability is due to its architect. Give me 30 minutes and it'll be improved. Regards KJP1 (talk) 08:09, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi again. Apologies for the slightly tetchy tone of the above. I hope it now meets notability standards. It is, after all, a Lutyens house. Thanks and best regards. KJP1 (talk) 08:54, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks and I'm truly glad you're happy with it. It's no Featured Article, to be sure, but it does add to the coverage of buildings by Sir Edwin Lutyens (a very, very important architect ) and therefore adds a modest something to the sum of Misplaced Pages knowledge. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 18:23, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

I have enough respect for Ling.Nut's previous work that I will be watchful for any shenanigans. See ya's Tiderolls 01:47, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
    • I'm not a "they"; I'm a "he"... Is it possible to migrate Ling.Nut's contribs to Ling.Nut2?  – Ling.Nut 02:42, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
      • I don't think there's a way to migrate contribs, but if you have a way of proving you're Ling.Nut (e.g., by sending an email to a user that you used to email using the Ling.Nut account using that same email), then you could potentially have Ling.Nut2 renamed to something like Ling.Nut2 (usurped) and then have Ling.Nut renamed to Ling.Nut2. Try WP:CHU, they could probably give you better advice than I can. I hope this helps :) — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 02:55, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Misplaced Pages in general in the past-ness

Well, I don't know for certain if I'm the oldest Wikipedian (I am over 50 yet not quite as old as, say, Ward Cunningham), but I have been on Misplaced Pages for a long time & the periods between my sightings of other old-timer Wikipedians have been consistently getting longer. (The one guy who could beat my record for certain is Slrubenstein, but he's not as active as I am.) Anyway, I might write an account of the "old days" of Misplaced Pages for the Signpost if I can figure out a way to write about it that entertains readers. (One of the drawbacks of being an old fossil like me is that old fossils tend to be boring.) -- llywrch (talk) 19:47, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

I case you're still interested, I blathered a bit at Misplaced Pages talk:Wiki Guides/What was your new user experience about the old days at Misplaced Pages. I don't know if I provided any information that the Wiki Guides could use, but I enjoyed reading what I wrote. Maybe you will too. -- llywrch (talk) 18:38, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi there,

I noticed that you've made these edits and it seems like you've finished more or less doing them, but it looks like you manually did the task using AWB. For future reference, my bot, User:Thehelpfulbot is able to carry out automated find/replace tasks so you don't have to press save every few seconds.

If you have another task that requires essentially find/replace, feel free to let me know and I'd be happy to help! :)

Hope this helps,

About your Admin Coaching request

User talk

Your submission at Admin Coaching has been removed from the request list, as requests where the submitter has not visited the page for at least 6 months (or been inactive for at least 4 months) are removed.

You are welcome to re-submit a request should you wish to, but please note that you are expected to regularly check the page (and to update the "last visited" field of your request) to show your continued interest in the project. If you do re-submit, please carefully re-read the instructions for submission as they may have changed since you last visited!

As noted on the project page, there is an on-going backlog with the project, as so few admins are currently coaching. This means that you may have a long wait for a response (if you receive one at all).

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

In regard to the copyright violation in this article, please note that the original article creator was not the person who added the copyright violation. That was done by another editor a few months later. I have reverted the article to a non-violating version, notified the article who added the copyvio, and struck out the warning to the article creator. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:57, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for marking my creation of a Sandbox Template for Speedy Deletion

It's like my 3rd day now, and I created the Sandbox Template (of course accidentally) on my first day while trying to use My Sandbox to test stuff so I wouldn't do anything globally stupid (like create a global Sandbox Template where one shouldn't exist). Sorry!

I spent some time thereafter trying to learn all about how to delete pages, but when I went back and started looking at stuff, to start trying to figure it out, I saw repeated messages that a bot was repeatedly clearing the Sandbox. I assumed this meant that my f'up had been cleared fixed -- Never occurred to me that I was the reason that the bot kept repeatedly trying to clear the Sandbox every two seconds. I assure you, if I'd realized I was doing something like that, I'd have tried to find some way to fix it -- but again, I thought the bot cleared sandbox message meant the problem had been fixed.

Anyways, how it happened could happen to others (if they're as dumb as me and don't always read and follow instructions completely) so, since I still haven't really got a clue what I'm doing yet, if you don't mind I'll explain it to you and maybe you can, or know someone who can, make sure it doesn't happen to someone else.

I was at, I think it was the global Sandbox page, and it had instructions something kinda like "...to create your own sandbox click here. You can create a link to your personal sandbox on your user page by adding the code {{My Sandbox}}". Being an idiot, I didn't read the message thoroughly and instead just added the {{My Sandbox}} link to my user page without first clicking the here to actually create my personal Sandbox page. I then went to my newly revised user page and clicked on the 'My Sandbox' link which took me to a page that said it was the Sandbox (obviously the Global Sandbox template and not my personal Sandbox), but having never seen a Wiki Sandbox before, it looked pretty good to me, and besides, what harm could I do... I was in the Sandbox. Anyways, I saw a 'Create' link where other pages usually said 'Edit' so I created & Saved. After saving I realized that I had done something bad in the Global Sandbox, so I looked for a 'Delete' button, link, etc; then I looked for a 'Help' button, link, etc; then I started searching about deleting pages and got into the meriad of WP:YouNameIt_Protocols for every type of deletion, etc. It was after starting to read some of these dozens of pages that I went back and saw that a bot was auto clearing stuff and I figured my goof had been auto-fixed; whew!

Anyways... whatever page it is that tells users to click here. and then tells them they can add a {{My Sandbox}} link to access their personal Sandbox, should be much, much, much more clear about the fact that the user must first click here or all hell will break loose. I seriously hope I didn't mess things up too badly (I think I'll consider just creating an 'Oops!' tagline); but maybe you could (or you know who else to mention this situation to who could) clarify the instructions on that page that has the directions about creating the {{My Sandbox}} link. Thanks! (I very sincerely promise to try really really hard not to f anything else up (at least for a while, but hopefully not for a long time)). -- Who R you? (talk) 04:14, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Template talk:Aviation accidents and incidents in 2011. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Misplaced Pages user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Misplaced Pages present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

Survey

Hi Cymrus.lass!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Misplaced Pages (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Misplaced Pages! Thank you! Mystery

Please solve this mystery if you can...

On September 23rd, traffic to Portal:James Bond doubled, and has stayed at the new level since then. I can't figure out what happened.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Portal%3AJames_Bond

Traffic to Outline of James Bond stayed the same (though it was at the higher-level already), which leads me to suspect changes made somewhere in Misplaced Pages.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Outline%20of%20James_Bond

I'd like to find out what happened, in case it reveals helpful link placement tips that can double the traffic to outlines too!

I look forward to your reply. The Transhumanist 22:43, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Please help fill in annotations at Portal:Contents/Outlines

Please go to Portal:Contents/Outlines' and fill in as many missing annotations as you can, even if it's only one or two. Every little bit helps!

The annotating of the entries on Portal:Contents/Outlines is nearing completion.

Annotated entries look like this:

  • Basketball – team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules.
  • Canoeing and kayaking – two closely related forms of watercraft paddling, involving manually propelling and navigating specialized boats called canoes and kayaks using a blade that is joined to a shaft, known as a paddle, in the water.
  • Cricket – bat-and-ball team sport, the most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game.
  • Martial arts – extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.

Entries needing annotations look like this:

The links to the country outlines don't need annotations (they are listed by region).

Even if all you can do is one or two, the support will be greatly felt. Many hands make light work.

Thank you. The Transhumanist 00:40, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Kim Jong-nam

I've just reverted your addition to the above article. No reliable sources have yet confirmed that Kim Jong-Un has taken over from his father; it's widely reported that he is expected to take over, but not one source I can find states that he has taken over. Let's not jump the gun here; it's quite possible verging on likely that something unexpected will happen, if it hasn't already. Let's wait until reliable sources can confirm that what was expected to happen actually did happen. --NellieBly (talk) 04:42, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Inappropriate person/sandbox

A tag has been placed on Template:Inappropriate person/sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages for multiple reasons. Please see the page to see the reasons. If the page has since been deleted, you can ask me the reasons by leaving a message on my user talk page.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 23:47, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Oh, please

RFC guidelines require "a brief, neutral statement of the issue" (emphasis is not mine). The alternative to editing the RFC to make it neutral would have been removing it and making Esoglou file again, which would have been tedious for everyone involved. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 19:37, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm fine with changing the statement for the RfC by striking the other guy's comment and adding a new statement, or just replacing it entirely. What I'm not okay with is replacing the other guy's comment but leaving his signature. That's against Misplaced Pages policy. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 06:44, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I noticed afterwards that I'd forgotten to remove or change the signature, so I did so. Unfortunately, Esoglou restored his disruptive RFC text. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 06:46, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Request

I want, if possible, to limit my reverting of Roscelese's revertings. I trust therefore that you will not mind attending to Roscelese's reverting of your edit.

The question for discussion is a relative one: In an article that contains the other two items that seem less important, is there any justification for deleting the information about Baudouin? Without the points of comparison, the question would be too abstract. Esoglou (talk) 20:49, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry. Perhaps there is little that you can do. I should not have bothered you with this request. Esoglou (talk) 21:25, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

To Roscelese and Esoglou

User:Roscelese and User:Esoglou, I have stuck both your comments and written my own neutral phrasing of the RfC. Now please set about to discussing the issue rather than arguing with each other, reverting each other and editing each others' comments. I hope the fact that the RfC statement has been worded by an unbiased 3rd party will allow you both to set about reaching a consensus. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 07:00, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, if we had reached a consensus there would be no need for an RFC, but unfortunately Esoglou is not content with the current consensus reached with input from a third party. :P Would you mind editing your comment slightly? There's a grammatical error in the first line, and Baudouin is deceased so he opposed, etc. OCD, you know. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 07:04, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Ahh. I didn't know he died. Don't even know who he is. Probably should, since my best mate from when I was 6 is a Belgian countess or duchess or something like that. Anyway... My condolences to the people of Belgium. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 07:08, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, Cymru lass. One request for comment was enough. Esoglou (talk) 08:35, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome! I know firsthand discussion/debate about a subject about which one is passionate can quickly descend into argument :P — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 08:58, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you again. Since there has been unanimity by all minus one, perhaps it is now time to remove the RfC. Esoglou (talk) 15:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - notes and office hours

Hey guys! Another month, another newsletter.

First off - the first bits of AFT5 are now deployed. As of early last week, the various different designs are deployed on 0.1 percent of articles, for a certain "bucket" of randomly-assigned readers. With the data flooding in from these, we were able to generate a big pool of comments for editors to categorise as "useful" or "not useful". This information will be used to work out which form is the "best" form, producing the most useful feedback and the least junk. Hopefully we'll have the data for you by the end of the week; I can't thank the editors who volunteered to hand-code enough; we wouldn't be where we are now without you.

All this useful information means we can move on to finalising the tool, and so we're holding an extra-important office hours session on Friday, 6th January at 19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. If you can't make it, drop me a note and I'll be happy to provide logs so you can see what went on - if you can make it, but will turn up late, bear in mind that I'll be hanging around until 23:00 UTC to deal with latecomers :).

Things we'll be discussing include:

  • The design of the feedback page, which will display all the feedback gathered through whichever form comes out on top.
  • An expansion of the pool of articles which have AFT5 displayed, from 0.1 percent to 0.3 (which is what we were going to do initially anyway)
  • An upcoming Request for Comment that will cover (amongst other things) who can access various features in the tool, such as the "hide" button.

If you can't make it to the session, all this stuff will be displayed on the talkpage soon after, so no worries ;). Hope to see you all there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 04:50, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - things to do

Hey guys! A couple of highly important things to do over the next few weeks:

  • We've opened a Request for Comment on several of the most important aspects of the tool, including who should be able to hide inappropriate comments. It will remain open until 20 January; I encourage everyone with an interest to take part :).
  • A second round of feedback categorisation will take place in a few weeks, so we can properly evaluate which design works the best and keeps all the junk out :P. All volunteers are welcome and desired; there may be foundation swag in it for you!

Article Feedback Tool

Hey guys; apologies for the belated nature of this notification; as you can probably imagine, the whole blackout thing kinda messed with our timetables :P. Just a quick reminder that we've got an office hours session tomorrow at 19:00 in #wikimedia-office, where we'll be discussing the results of the hand-coding and previewing some new changes. Hope to see you there :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 22:14, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
