== Re:RfR == | |||
Hi Titoxd. I replied at RfR talk. I don't think the proposal is new, particularly, but a recycling of the old one. I think those (of you) who would see RfR have really got to tackle the problems in the poll. These range from the philosophical to the procedural. So re-proposing broadly the same procedure (in the rather half-thought-out way that is there at present) really doesn't make much difference, to me at least. Talrias seems determined to conjure a consensus out of that poll whichever way he can: he's now suggesting that by reforming the process to a currently-arbitrary degree allows the claiming of sufficient support from that poll which was on a proposal that none of the pollees can be said to have ever considered! RfR needs to think out of the box, in a big way. -]<small>]</small> 23:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

== Is the collateral damage really worth it? ==
Dear Titoxd (titanium oxide? :-D),
As an AOL member I am an involuntary user of whatever dynamic IP AOL in its wisdom assigns to me. As it happens, that IP currently seems to be 205.188.116.203, which was "autoblocked" under your signature. I discovered this when I tried to correct an error I made in ], a page I recently created. I do appreciate that the problem of vandalism has to be dealt with in some way, but I am starting to get frustrated at the way administrators like yourself are dealing with it. This is not the first time I have been an innocent victim of autoblocking (what the blocking page calls "collateral damage"). In fact, it has happened to me three times in the last week (each time with a different IP). It's all very well to say that "Occasionally, users with dynamic IPs will be blocked accidentally." I would not call three times a week ''occasional''. If my experience as an AOL user is typical (and I have no reason to believe otherwise), the extent of collateral damage must be massive, raising the question of whether this cure for vandalism isn't worse than the disease. I could just patiently wait for the block to expire (again), but I feel I should at least bring the larger problem to your attention in hopes that as an administrator, you might be able to suggest alternative ways of dealing with it. This is not just about me; if every earnest Misplaced Pages contributor who has the misfortune to be at the mercy of a dynamic IP gets blasted like this three times a week, I would call that a significant problem.
Oh, and a PS: As I can't correct my own mistake, I would appreciate if '''you''' could edit ] for me. I got the hierarchy of subheads the wrong way round; "Short films" and "Feature films" are supposed to be subheads of "Filmography" ] 09:20, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

== Big changes to Flcelloguy's Tool ==
I found that if you change the name of the person, the contributions of both people become addded together. In fixing that (and, at the same time, implementing tons of things I'd been putting off), I implemented two new classes. The tool now works great for downloading, but I didn't re-implement parsing from saved files (and all that functionality is being moved to the new StatBundle class). It needs to parse the username from the file and then display it in the "username" field anyway. I'm still working on it, but if you're around, hop on IRC and message me (I'm not in any channels but I'm online), and I'll upload copies of everything. --]]]] 00:58, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tixotd. Misplaced Pages started using the death toll from my blog a few months back without me even asking. Someone suggested using my blog as a source; they said, "I know it's a blog and that sounds bad, but it looks like he has backed his sources up pretty well." After some debate, Misplaced Pages's Hurricane Katrina entry started using my death toll. Since then, I have occasionally updated it with totals from my blog. Since my blog was already being used as a source by Misplaced Pages, I think that the controversy by you and the other source is a bit over the top.
Furthermore, although you guys think you are deleting my edit, the Hurricane Katrina piece is continuing to use my blog as a death toll source, as it has for months now. My sources for each state are are listed in each update of the death toll. In my most recent entry, which is being referenced on Kos, the source for each state (a newspaper article) is listed in a table at the end of the piece. You are free to check it out for yourself if you wish.
The controversial entries regarding Ohio, Kentucky and evacuees now have names and ages of those killed in Kentucky and Ohio, dates, locations and causes of their deaths , along with the titles, dates and authors of the newspaper articles referring to the incidents. There is also a reference to the title, date and author of the article that refers to the 57 evacuee deaths caused by Katrina. The rest of the total is not controversial, but there are links to current, valid, newspaper articles for all totals for those who wish to check them out. I have been keeping track of the Katrina death toll for months now and no one has challenged my methodology yet.
The toll is regularly updated and occasionally lowered if need be. Conflicting totals given in various news piece are weighed before I decide which one to use. Feel free to check out my data. The mainstream media has dropped the ball on this story and I picked it up.

Hi. I saw that you put the alternate "undeletion" template here as opposed to {{tl|tempundelete}}. I see the advantages of ''not'' making them look at the history, but the one you used says "You are welcome to edit this article..." Which in fact I almost did to correct the broken ref tag before I noticed it was actually protected. Do you think that the underlying template should get edited to reflect the "we protect these while on DRV" thing? == WP 1.0 ==
Hi Titoxd, | |||
Thanks a lot for signing up for WP1.0, and for getting involved already. I've already appreciated the pioneering activities of the tropical cyclones folks in organisation & assessment, so I'm really pleased to see you getting involved. I wanted to ask a couple of questions -
*What area are you most interested in? Since I got to "know" you through the ], and since I coordinate that, I'd naturally encourage you to consider helping us there - but involvement in any part of the project would be great.
*Where do you see the WP1.0 project going? That may seem a strange question to ask a newcomer, but I would like to reorganise the main project page in the next week or two, to reflect the fact that we are moving beyond the "Let's start this project" stage into a new phase. I put my thoughts ], but I haven't had much feedback. One frustration on this project is that many of the participants are crazy overloaded Wikipedians who never get time to work on the project much! As an organic chemist I'm also someone who likes to lay all the issues on the table together, but I suspect many others prefer to discuss things one issue at a time! Having talked with the more active people like Gflores and Maurreen, I think we're moving towards a mini-consensus of focussing on the major topics first, and probably doing a trial version (WP:0.5?) later this year of perhaps 1000 articles that we have checked are decent. We would presumably expand the number before a full release were made, allowing us to bring in lists from the WikiProjects and FAs/GAs. Do you think this approach would work well, or do you think differently?
By the way, do you take your user name for ]? I uploaded the pic for that page!
Thanks again, I really appreciate your involvement, ] 15:47, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

== A reply - Cyclone Larry ==
Hi Titoxd. Thanks for your message. I entirely agree that TydeNet's comments were inappropriate, that they were in breach of WP:NPA, and that personal attacks shouldn’t go unchecked. I don't think that anybody disagrees on this point. TydeNet has himself apologised (see the bottom of ]). I’ve gone back and read the archive and realised that you weren’t as involved in the discussion as I had assumed so I apologise for making that assumption and for reading your comments as a threat. .
I felt that your warning could have been worded a little more directly to make it clear that it was a warning. I acknowledge that you intended your comment to be a warning, but it could have been read as a contribution to the debate (and from TydeNet's subsequent comments, it is clear that he did read it that way). I think it would have been better to clearly state that "your comments above constitute personal attacks. This is a warning that if you continue personal attacks you will be blocked". A similar warning should also have been placed on TydeNet's talk page. Mentioning the need to cite sources seems to have been read by TydeNet as a further contribution to the debate. I realise that it is a fine line, but to avoid confusion I think its just best to keep things clear.
Whether or not your warning constituted a proper warning or was read as such, NSLE still shouldn't have been the admin to place the block and 31 hours was (in my view) excessive. He should have asked somebody else to look at it, and that was essentially my issue which I raised with him on his talk page. He chose to reply by focusing on the issue of your warning and ignoring the other issues I had raised.
I think people are generally a bit tired of this debate and I think we’re probably at the point where we can move on. When NSLE returns from Wikibreak I’ll try to resolve my differences with him without causing him any more wikistress. I hope that everyone can take some lessons from the whole thing and move on. -- ]|] 03:20, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. -JCarriker 02:52, 6 April 2006 (UTC) Request for assistanceI posted the poll concerning the Community Portal to protest the reversion of the Community Portal to a months-ago version, and specifically asked in the poll for the immediate reversion of the reversion by having Misplaced Pages:Community Portal/Redesign/Draft1a returned to its proper place. The plea has gained overwhelming support, and the community has made it clear that they want that draft back on the Community Portal page. The CP is protected, so this requires that an admin do it. Please copy draft1a onto the Community Portal. Sincerely, --Go for it! 17:39, 6 April 2006 (UTC) Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2
