Fuse is a music video-oriented television channel. Fuse was originally MuchMusicUSA, then MuchUSA, and then mmusa. MuchMusicUSA was a partership between CHUM Limited, the creators of Canada's MuchMusic and Rainbow Media. In May 2003, MuchUSA became Fuse due to the end of a licensing agreement between the two companies.
Format
MuchUSA was similar to MuchMusic in Canada, based in Toronto. As Fuse, it has studios headquartered across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fuse chiefly focuses on pop and rock music, and does have more alternative programming later at night. The channel recently made changes to their website and have also let go of their trademark VJ Juliya and her show 'Metal Asylum'.
The channel has recently been criticized for going "emo" recently, as the channel now plays emo music videos regularly and even endorses Victory Records. Hard rock/metal videos have almost completly removed from the station. Many other critics have also criticized the changes as an attempt to compete better with MTV and MTV2 in the Nielsen ratings and feel the channel has "sold out" and "jumped the shark" by sacrificing variety in order to gain more mainstream appeal at the expense of their traditional fanbase who many saw as looking for an alternative to the product put out by MTV.
VJs
Fuse has five VJs: Marianela, Steven, Dylan, Juliya and Adonis. Each of the five VJs has at least one set type of music that they are related to and regularly host shows dedicated to their chosen music field(s).
- Marianela is the "rap/hip-hop" representative
- Steven focuses more on punk rock, indie rock, and alternative music.
- Juliya was the channel's heavy metal representative. She hosts the programs Uranium, "Metal Asylum," and Slave to the Metal. Her contract was surprisingly not renewed this year. And rumor is that Juliya and FUSE have parted ways. She is no longer at www.fuse.tv, although she was the most popular VJ.
- Adonis, who was recently hand picked by Fuse Fans, has a very eclectic taste in music. He has not been seen since the last episode of 'Videomaniac'
- Dylan focuses more on pop music. He hosts the program Daily Download and F-list.
Reception
Fuse is nominally a cable network, and is generally available only on cable systems. Uniquely, however, Fuse is available to residents of central and east Austin, Texas—including resident students of the University of Texas at Austin—via low-power TV station K09VR-TV.
