"First they came…"

is a famous statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. The text of the quotation is usually presented roughly as follows:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Peaceful reminder to myself

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension.

Welcome messages

Hi there,

You managed to leave welcome messages for two of the users I was training in a workshop today, while the workshop was in progress - well timed! Thanks for doing this sort of patrolling...

What's the template you're using? It's a lot more attractive than {{W-screen}}, my usual fallback. Andrew Gray (talk) 17:11, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar. I have a bunch of welcomes saved. The one you ask about is User:Buster7/Welcomes#WikiGuide Welcome. Its from when the WikiGuide project was active. Now, I pretty much do them one at a time. First, I edit the B7/Welcomes page by resigning which changes to todays date. Then I cut-n-paste and I go to recent changes and look for talk redlinks. I only welcome editors that are already doing some editing or have created a sandbox. I figure the chance of retention is a bit higher if they are already busy working on an article or in a sandbox. BTW...I'm curious...who were the users? If I'm not to rushed I look for new editors that may be in a "situation" and a friendly welcome will ease their perplexity. I find that many of the templates that new editors get are very BLUNT. I try to balance that whenever possible. Nice to meet you. ```Buster Seven Talk 17:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
One was Andreaderi (talk · contribs); I seem to have misplaced the note with the other one's name!
I try to leave welcome notes as part of the workshop (it's a good practical demonstration of how to use talk pages) and it's interesting to see how often I get beaten to it by someone - about 10% of the time, I think. Thanks again, Andrew Gray (talk) 08:23, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Dispute Resolution IRC office hours.

Hello there. As you expressed interest in hearing updates to my research in the dispute resolution survey that was done a few months ago, I just wanted to let you know that I am hosting an IRC office hours session this coming Saturday, 28th July at 19:00 UTC (approximately 12 hours from now). This will be located in the #wikimedia-office IRC channel - if you have not participated in an IRC discussion before you can connect to IRC here.

COI+ certification proposal

I've thought of an idea that might break our current logjam with paid editing. I'd love your sincere feedback and opinion.

Feel free to circulate this to anyone you think should know about it, but please recognize that it hasn't been agreed upon by either PR organizations or WikiProjects or the wider community. It's also just a draft, so any/many changes can still be made. Thanks and cheers, Ocaasi 15:15, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

New tip...

When using a Welcome template with precoded tildes for an auto signature of the posting editor...always remember to use the {{Subst:}} instead of the actual template name. This transcludes all the text from the template onto the article and allows the tildes to auto sign. (PS...I will fix the transclusion problem of the template documentation as soon as I can! ;)--Amadscientist (talk) 21:56, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Absolutely no prob. I'm used to cutnpaste method anyway. I realize its like using a rotary phone...but I barely understand what you said above...:~)...```Buster Seven Talk 22:11, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
It is all very new to me, but I am figuring it out little by little. Sometimes I just need to sit down with a cup of coffee and stop thinking and it comes to me...like i think just happened. I will know momentarily.--Amadscientist (talk) 22:49, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks!

UTC

UTC is part of the timestamp, indicating that the time/date is Coordinated Universal Time (in common usage, basically the same as what was called Greenwich Mean Time or GMT). isaacl (talk) 00:50, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. ```Buster Seven Talk 00:53, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Or, if you like military-speak, you can just call it "zulu." Zaereth (talk) 01:02, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Hey Zaereth. Zulu it is. (A great movie BTW). ```Buster Seven Talk 01:07, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Talk page archiving

On this page, near the beginning, there is some text starting with "{{User:MiszaBot/config". By changing the parameters you can control how your page is archived, or you can removing the part between {{ }} entirely to stop archiving. See User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo for more information. isaacl (talk) 01:08, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Done Thanks. I removed eveything re:archiving, including the brackets. ```Buster Seven Talk 01:17, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
