Richmond was born in ], grew up in ], attended college at The ] and graduate school at the ], and eventually settled in ], where she founded the online literary journal ''Fiction Attic''.

Richmond's short stories have appeared in Playboy, The Missouri Review, Glimmer Train, ], and elsewhere. She received the 2006 Mississippi Review Prize for a short story entitled "The Great Amphibian." Her essays have been published in Salon.com, Oxford American, and The Kenyon Review, among others. Additionally, her essays about Iceland, Argentina, China, Slovenia, and other destinations have appeared in many magazines and anthologies.

Michelle Richmond is an American novelist and essayist.

Richmond's first book, the story collection The Girl in the Fall-Away Dress, won the Associated Writing Programs Award for Short Fiction in 2000 and was published by University of Massachusetts Press in 2001. Her second novel, The Year of Fog, published by Delacorte in 2007, was a New York Times best seller .
