Hi, yes this is the new logo we would need to have on our Misplaced Pages page. Please let us know if we need to connect with someone within your admin team or you will pass the request yourself to someone to chage our logo. ] (]) 12:02, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Deleted Chesapeake Conservancy entry

Hi there, I am trying to create an organizational page for the Chesapeake Conservancy, just like the ones for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Defenders of Wildlife. My first attempt was removed due to G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion. Do you have suggestions of how I can create this page without it being perceived as a promotion and, thus, deleted? Thank you very much. Best, Twigatembo (talk) 00:29, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't use Chesapeake Bay Foundation as a model of excellence. The final paragraph is borderline acceptable, probably on the wrong side of acceptable.
In your case, sentences such as
"The Conservancy believes that connecting people to the Bay is vital to ensuring the long-term conservation of the Chesapeake Bay" is clearly promotional. It is often accepted to include a quote from the organization about the mission, but it should be a clear quote.
The article looks like it was written by someone who is promoting the organization, not an outside disinterested summary of the organization.
You need some references that are independent of the subject. Has it been discussed in newspapers or books?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages does not contain "organizational pages": it contains encyclopaedia articles, some of which are about organisations. I'm not just being picky: I suspect that you are having problems with the article because of the way you are thinking of it. This is not a directory, or a social networking site: it is a general encyclopaedia, and the articles should be appropriate in tone and content to that purpose. --ColinFine (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

User Name / Pass Word

I have a user name but I can't log in because I have forgotten my password. When I ask for a new password and input my e-mail addresses the system tells me that there is no e-mail address connected to my user name. How do I get out of this mess. I am not even sure where I can read an answer if you have one. Thanks Fred — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.31.179.30 (talk) 03:48, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello Fred! You'll read the answer right here. Unfortunately, the only way to recover a lost password is through the email system you have tried to use. If you didn't enable email on that account, then there is no way to recover your lost password. The only recourse at this point is to create a new account. Sorry! --Jayron32 04:23, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

The articles you list as "were submitted" were actually not submitted through AFC at all - if they did go through AFC there would be a template on the talk pages saying so. They are all really bad articles, none of them have any references at all. You should definitely not be using any of them as examples of what a proper WP article should look like. Self Published Book

I have recently published a book entitled "The Whole Truth: A Fresh Look At Reality". It is based on scientific fact and consists of original ideas and comments on a number of topics including reality, time, our universe, space, entropy and life. One example is that I propose the idea that reality is not a single subject but is composed of at least two aspects -physical reality and subjective, or perceived, reality which are independent, although inter-related. When reality is considered from this perspective one sees many subjects, such as time, in a completely different way.
I believe that my ideas are interesting, and that some could be useful, or even valuable to others. I would like to participate in Misplaced Pages discussions on a number of subjects, but I do not want to violate Misplaced Pages's principles or offend anyone.
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Sui docuit (talk) 14:27, 29 October 2012 (UTC)sui docuit

Hi Sui docuit. What you propose is unlikely to be included in Misplaced Pages, since we have a policy on fringe theories that would proscribe it. If the only source for your theory is your own self-published book, then it does not meet the basic requirements for inclusion, and an article would not be appropriate. Misplaced Pages isn't a forum for discussing new ideas, we are an encyclopedia that reports on subjects which have received significant mainstream coverage. Yunshui 14:36, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
(ec)Misplaced Pages does not publish Original research, citing your own work is considered bad form - other than that, there is no reason why you should not participate freely in improving the encyclopedia. You might want to take a look at WP:WikiProject Philosophy, as it seems to be the best match to your field of interest. Welcome to Misplaced Pages! (BTW I have corrected the indent on your post - the first post in a section should not be indented.) Roger (talk) 14:39, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

(I reformatted your comments to remove leading spaces; that creates format problems.) Sui docuit, you are quite welcome to participate in any talk page discussions on Misplaced Pages if the discussion pertains to improvement of an article (they should not be general discussion of a topic, and especially not for promotion of your book). I have place a standard welcome template on your talk page. For more information about how things work around here, click the blue links. Happy editing! Cresix (talk) 14:39, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

datasets on contributions to Misplaced Pages and/or sister websites

Hello,

I'm interested in doing a statistical analysis of editing behaviors for a university research project. Where can I find datasets that contain information on edits made to Misplaced Pages and its sister websites? Information on each user that makes an edit to a page would also be nice. I ask because I think it would be rather inconvenient to have to look at individual page histories and user contributions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.135.100.115 (talk) 14:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

WRONG COMPANY DIRECTION

There is currently a Misplaced Pages page named Lonmin.

When you search for the company Lonrho it automatically takes you to the Lonmin page as though Lonrho is now Lonmin.

This is completely wrong and actually Lonrho has no involvement with the company called Lonmin at all. The direction of search for Lonrho, points to Lonmin, this must be cancelled/ changed as the company Lonrho does not want to be related to the business actions of Lonmin and consequently appear associated with the company. This is completely mis informed information and can have a negative knock on effect for Lonrho.

Lonrho for some reason is in the url for Lonmin.

Please may you inform me of the change to this misdirection. The company Lonrho are looking to hold their own Misplaced Pages page.

Please conifrm receipt of this email and what action will be taken to rectify this.

Many thanks and best regards,

Miss C Bushell — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lonrho Plc (talkcontribs) 15:29, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

The references in the article make it clear that Lonrho plc was renamed to Lonmin plc in 1999. Many readers, however, will remember the company as Lonrho, and it is quite reasonable that there should be a redirect from Lonrho to Lonmin. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I have replaced the redirect with a (very brief) stub at Lonrho. It was not a simple name change - the company actually split into two separate entities. Roger (talk) 15:57, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
This ref from the company registrar makes it a bit clearer. The company now known as Lonrho plc is what until 2007 was Lonrho Africa plc. The company that was previously Lonrho plc became Lonmin plc in 1999. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:04, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Good find! The organigram at http://www.lonrho.com/About_Lonrho/Strategy_~_Vision/Default.aspx?id=745 also helps. Roger (talk) 16:10, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
It may be open to question which is the primary topic in this case. I expect that most people who recognise the name Lonrho will be thinking of the old Tiny Rowlands company, and the history of that is covered in the Lonmin article, rather than the new Lonrho. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
AIUI Lonmin was split off from Lonrho, so that history should be moved to the Lonrho article. It seems to me that the company split was misinterpreted as a name change by whoever worked on the article here on WP so they simply moved Lonrho to Lonmin instead of creating a new separate article. Roger (talk) 18:24, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
When the split happened, the name Lonrho plc stayed with the part that subsequently became Lonmin. It was the part that for 9 years was known as Lonrho Africa plc that was eventually renamed to become the current Lonrho. The Lonrho plc share price before and after the demerger would imply that only about 20% of the company had been demerged into Lonrho Africa plc. It appears (from that & from the registrar's information referenced above) that what is now Lonrho was split off from what is now Lonmin, rather than vice versa. I wonder whether it might not be clearer to have 3 different articles, one for the old company before the 1998 split, one for what is now Lonmin, & one for what is now Lonrho. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:51, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
That seems like a sensible solution - the current Lonrho could possibly go under the name Lonrho Africa - looking at it's organigram the current "Lonrho plc" is just a "top structure" added above "Lonrho Africa Holdings" except for "Lonrho Transportation" which appears to simply be a shell that owns an airline. (Why do companies like this go out of their way to make stuff so complicated for us?) Roger (talk) 19:18, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

A similar situation existed with Voestalpine and Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau. My research suggested these were two different companies, and I imagine many people were confused because most people have never heard of either one, but if a person read something about one they would think it was about the other. The companies have been separate since one split off from the other in the 1950s, and now Siemens owns the company that split from the other.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:02, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Robert Lombardo, composer, needs to be added...

Robert Lombardo, composer, is referenced in other Misplaced Pages articles, but there are no articles about him or links to his website. ( http://robertlombardo.net ) He is an important American composer. He was a student of Arnold Franchetti Arnold_Franchetti for whom an article does exist and Robert Lombardo is listed as his student, but there is no article on Robert Lombardo. There should be an article about Robert Lombardo. I can't figure out how to enter him into Wikiepedia. I can't enter a link to his external website. PLEASE HELP. Deleted page: Climate Disclosure Standards Board

Hello,

We updated the page referring to our organisation(Climate Disclosure Standards Board), which then was put on fast track delete, the reason being that google didn't show any results on us(it does, with our website on top). I tried contesting it but it was deleted without any response on my contest. All we wanted to do is put up a more up to date description of our organisation. We are a registered charity and have no intention of breaking any rules or guidelines set out by wikipedia. We would simply like to update the page referring to us. Please advise us on how to proceed. Best regards, Michael Zimonyi Project Officer, CDSB — Preceding unsigned comment added by MichaelZimonyi(CDSB) (talkcontribs) 18:08, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

The reason the article was deleted appears in the deletion log as follows - "17:32, 29 October 2012 RHaworth (Talk | contribs) deleted page Climate Disclosure Standards Board (A7: Article about a company, corporation, organization, or group, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)" All article must prove that the subject is notable. This is primarily achieved by demonstrating that people not connected with the subject have decided that the subject is worthy of being discussed through the existence of articles in mainstream newspapers (excluding press releases and similar self-generated publicity produced by the subject itself) or other publications with a reputation for independence and quality. Roger (talk) 18:33, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I do not know if this organization is notable or not, it in fact may be notable. However, the article's style was not encyclopedic—the content was likely copied from the company's website. In addition, the article was too long—it contained lots of information not suitable for encyclopedia and contained no references except own website, facebook page and a blog. Ruslik_Zero 18:43, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Hello both,
Thank you for your input. The content was not copied from the website, we worked very hard to make it suitable for wikipedia. I apologise if the page didn't seem encyclopaedic, if you have any specific comments, please do share them with me. The reason there were no other links was simply because it was still being edited.
Our organisation has been referenced in many professional publications(we are not a public-facing charity), as well as more mainstream financial publications, like this article in the Financial Times. We are an active player in the field of sustainability and work with governments and organisations like the United Nations to shape policy and regulations.
I would be grateful if you could provide some specific feedback on what was wrong with our entry(thank you for the comments on the links, as I said before that was simply a matter of finishing the page). We genuinely didn't mean to break any guidelines and would simply like to add CDSB to[REDACTED] to share knowledge with the online community.
Best regards, Michael--MichaelZimonyi(CDSB) (talk) 11:40, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Before you attempt to re-create the article, please read WP:COI and WP:BESTCOI, and if your user account is being used by more than one person, please read WP:NOSHARE.--ukexpat (talk) 13:59, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Hello Ukexpat,

Thank you for the links, I completely agree with the concepts described in those articles. I am employed by CDSB(as stated in my user name and signature above), but I am also an expert of this subject. Myself and my colleagues who have contributed to the entry have made sure to be objective and factual about CDSB and I'm currently going through the text again to make sure again that this is the case. The specific area we work in is very new and there are very few people who could write about our organisation at the level of expertise that we possess. My understanding of the conflict of interest article is that it is therefore acceptable for me to write about the organisation as long as I disclose this information(which I have in my username). Do you agree? My user name is only used by me, so there are no issues with that. I understand that all of your intentions are to keep[REDACTED] a source of facts rather than opinions. I hope that I have proven that I am able to guarantee that the information we would like to upload to[REDACTED] is factual. I am a scientist by education and I apply the same ethics to my current work as those in the lab. Best regards, Michael --MichaelZimonyi(CDSB) (talk) 15:58, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Each entry in my watchlist lists all the changes to each page over the last day. Weird category name

There is something wrong with the article about Berlin. It's located in the category "Category:Misplaced Pages articles needing factual verification from May 2,012". Shouldn't that be "Misplaced Pages articles needing factual verification from May 2012", as Gregorian year numbers don't include thousand separators? What is causing the thousand separator to appear? JIP | Talk 20:01, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Odd. After some long perusing through the article's history, I found that the verification tag was originally added there on August 6th and the category that followed with it was messed up as well as it said August 2,012. Perhaps the issue is connected with the template or something tied to it? I haven't a clue either. SassyLilNugget (talk) 20:49, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I also don't have a definitive answer, but the categorization is principally caused by the cat-date parameter of {{Verify source}}. However, the problem seems come from somewhere else. I am not sure from where, right now. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 20:50, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Searching http://en.wikipedia.org via Google I found that cat-date is defined via the meta template Template:Fix. I don't know where to go from here though. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 21:08, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I moved the verification tag down one entry in the infobox and it is fine now, but I think the original issue still needs to be looked at.Naraht (talk) 21:21, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Some templates make numeric processing of certain parameters which are only intended for numbers. This limits what can be assigned to such a parameter. Template:Infobox German state says:
|population = <!-- Population (no commas or other text) -->

|population=3507004{{Verify source|date=August 2012}} contained other text than the population. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:06, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Please advise as soon as possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tracy.carson (talkcontribs) 20:28, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Apparently your conflict of interest has blinded you as to our requirements here. Press releases are useless, since they are basically a species of advertisement; "listings with partners" are like listings in a phone directory; and marketing bullshit like "delivers best-in-class web solutions" has no place ever in an encyclopedia article. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages's CSS is just plain too hard to read from

I know this sounds like a stupid complaint, but sometimes this website is too wide to read.

Sometimes this isn't a big problem like in articles with a lot of images which help push lines

of text into a narrower column, but in many pages, like this talk page for instance,

the lines are so long that my eyes get confused just trying to find the right letters.

I have a widescreen monitor which makes this a huge problem. I feel like I am back

in kindergarten, where you had to use rulers or long index cards when reading books

so you could keep track of a line. Can someone point me to some site-column shrinking

CSS that I can use on the user-custom CSS page?

Kelvinsong (talk) 21:41, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

One possible workaround would be to use the browser 'zoom' buttons. Not sure of your browser, but Firefox has option for toobar buttons (not default). The downside is that in addition to shorter lines, you get bigger text -- which may or may not be a disadvantage. ~Just a suggestion ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:10, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm so un-savvy I don't even know what "CSS" means, but what I do in such cases (never at WP that I can remember) is hit the resize button in the upper right-hand corner of my screen, between the minimize and x-out buttons. Then I adjust the page size to my preference by dragging the margins in or out, up or down. Hope that helps. Yopienso (talk) 22:34, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
'CSS' = Cascading Style Sheet', which basically tells a page how it should look - usually if a user changes it, it is reset by the page and/or site when re-started; but there might be some sort of override? ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:50, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Users who create an account have access to a custom CSS stylesheet, which can be accessed at Special:MyPage/common.css. Here they can add any sort of custom configuration they want, which will automatically be applied to all pages (just for them). Theopolisme Boo! 23:17, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I am aware of the User-custom CSS, I've even fiddled around with it, and managed to get the readable columns I was looking for, albeit with floating "Read|Edit|View History|*" off to the side. What I'm wondering is if anyone has managed to create a working narrow[REDACTED] CSS I can use, or if there are other workarounds that don't involve browser zoom (giant text and blurry pictures), or window scaling (affects entire browser and you see desktop icons in the background). Citation

My problem is: I am citing information from a web source. The web source has a 'citation' tab. That citation tab specifies a formatted citation. That citation isn't very helpful for someone simply interested in verifying, or for wishing to find more related information.
My question is: should I just stick with the citation as specified, use URL citation based on " Although referring the URL might be enough in some cases..." , or add a 2nd citation (both), or ... (?)

Hi Eric! Misplaced Pages actually has several templates for citations—one of the generic ones is {{cite web}} (click to learn how to use). You can also use {{cite book}}, or one of the many others—see WP:Referencing for beginners. Thanks, Theopolisme Boo! 23:20, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Uploading of newspaper articles

Hi all,

I have been working on the Boss School of Music article, and I hope it looks fine. For the same I have copies of some old newspaper articles regarding the subject, and I since I could not find these on the internet, I wanted to know if I could upload them somewhere, and then cite them in the article. These articles were published by some local newspapers and therefore have not been uploaded by the publishing house.

Thanks Nikhil D. Gupta (talk) 08:29, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

You don't need to upload them in order to cite them. Just cite them giving the publication name, publisher name, the name of the author(s) of the piece, title of the piece, page number in the newspaper, and date. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 08:33, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
You must not upload them - just cite them. If you upload them you will be violating copyright and all links you add on WP to such uploads will have to be removed. Template:Cite news provides a convenient way to cite newspaper articles. Roger (talk) 08:37, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Can I upload them to Scribd so they can be viewed and verified by other[REDACTED] users? Currently about half of the article is written based on citations from such newspaper articles. -- Nikhil D. Gupta (talk) 13:09, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
No, because they would be copyright violations on Scribd, and we don't link to copyright violations (and Scribd is notoriously never a reliable source, since anybody can upload anything to it, including photoshopped "copies" and so forth). You must not upload them - just cite them. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:16, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

editing on what grounds?

Hi, I'm new here, and I just deleted a few lines off Magnetoresistive_random-access_memory that related it to an unrelated device, the Memristor. It was at the top as if it was an important statement, but seems there is a problem with the definition of a memristor, and Stan Williams of HP seems to be alone in making the controversial statement about MRAMs being memristors. It didn't seem right for it to be in the MRAMs page as memristors is only remotely related to MRAMs, and the association was more confusing than insightful, but I'm not sure on what grounds I should make my edit on, apart from my gut feeling... and something about WP:BOLD I came across :) L02T (talk) 09:35, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi L02T. It's fine to make such edits - if you have a good reason to believe that the information is incorrect, and if it isn't reliably sourced, then you're well within your rights to remove it. If other editors disagree, they can always put the information back in, and you can then have a conversation on the article's talkpage about whether or not it should be included. Making a bold edit, having it reverted, and then discussing the issue is a common and fundamental editing process on Misplaced Pages. Yunshui 10:02, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I looked up The Bathroom Manufacturers Association on Misplaced Pages.

There is a page there but there is a problem with the title – it should just be ‘The Bathroom Manufacturers Association’. But it has ‘User:DinosaursLoveExistence’ infront of the title. Is it possible to get rid of this so the title is clear?

We can ? Really? With a retro picture of a woman who looks like a construction worker flexing a steroid-filled bicep? I am so very sorry to say that this is the first time I have been annoyed with Misplaced Pages. The dubious relatability of the wonderful picture aside, why now? Why women? Why Bombay? If the ratio of women to men editors is not something that is suitable, correct, or representative of Misplaced Pages’s principles, surely there are other ways to address and perhaps correct this issue than come up with this idea. I can’t help but feel this is a patronizing and ill-informed choice on your part. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.248.176.193 (talk) 10:12, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I did some searching and it has to be about Misplaced Pages:Misplaced Pages Workshop for Women in Mumbai. The image is from a famous 1943 poster saying "We Can Do It". The workshop modified it to "We Can ", where "" looks like the section edit links in Misplaced Pages. As We Can Do It! says, the image has been used a lot since the 1980's, but it's mainly iconic in USA and I guess most Indians will not recognize it. It was added to the workshop box in by a volunteer editor from Mumbai. The use of the image can be discussed at Misplaced Pages talk:Misplaced Pages Workshop for Women in Mumbai. Everybody can arrange meetups. This one happens to be for women in Mumbai, decided by the volunteer organizers. Few meetups are for women specifically. Company name spelling needs correction

Hi,

I am writing regarding the correction of the name of our company, Mindtree Ltd. We recently rebranded our company and wanted to ensure the information is correctly represented on Misplaced Pages. Our previous name had a capital 'T' in the name as MindTree Ltd. We have changed that to Mindtree Ltd.

I want to request you to make the necessary corrections or help me make the changes on the page - MindTree

Kind regards, Arvind

Hello, I tried doing it myself but I couldn't because there is a redirect coming from the Mindtree spelling with more than an one line history so an admin will have to make the move. Such a move can be requested at WP:RM/TR. SassyLilNugget (talk) 12:20, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hello, Arvind. I tried to move the page MindTree to Mindtree; but I find that the latter already exists as a redirect to MindTree. I think this needs administrator intervention to move MindTree to Mindtree over the redirection. Online sources only?

Hi! I am interested in bringing articles to Misplaced Pages from printed resources that might be inaccessible or too expensive to many people wishing to research a certain topic or subject on line using this service ~ and cannot find a lot online using Google. My first article was approved and accepted for inclusion, however, one reviewer keeps going in and removing the primary source even though I provide all the correct template information for anyone wishing to research the facts can find it in this book: i.e. title | publisher | author | editor | year | page | etc. Are we only allowed to cite online sources? My article has been littered with "citations needed" after nearly every sentence. How can I possibly back-up my content if sources that prove them are removed? what are the rules for citing books? newspaper articles? magazines? ... I have read all that Misplaced Pages says about this practice and can find nothing that violates what I had originally included. Any suggestions? It's funny, every reviewer has a different interpretation about this matter, but I'm hoping that this forum can clear this up enough for me to go back in and clean-up what one particular reviewer has done. Many of the statements that keep getting re-written are actually untrue and non factual. i.e. the reviewer claims that a Broadway producer followed a musical with a book ... which is a misleading statement with no citation to prove this. The reviewer clearly has not seen or read this book since this is not true in what it infers. Anyway, I'm getting off track ~ any help in this matter would clear up a lot. Thanks so much in advance! Impromp2Music (talk) 14:44, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

You are absolutely allowed to use offline sources for verification and in support of claims to notability. Per WP:SOURCEACCESS and WP:OFFLINE, there is no requirement that sources be available online - it's convenient, but not necessary. You can cite newspapers and magazines using variants of the {{cite}} template; choose the appropriate one from this list. Yunshui 14:53, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. This is exactly what I have done, but the reviewer keeps removing it (them). Does anyone else have input on this matter? I'd like to get a consensus. Am I missing someone crucial that would back the reviewer's removal? Impromp2Music (talk) 15:32, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I haven't written it yet, but I'll have a few words to say at your user talk page. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 15:52, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I appreciate it. I contacted Misplaced Pages and they invested the situation saying that certain reviewers that spend a considerable amount of time editing tend to lose sight of communal efforts and begin to self-appoint themselves to be all knowing in their contributions almost to the point of it becoming personal. They have directed me to two places for filing a dispute. At this point I'm almost ready to just delete the article. It's just not worth it. Impromp2Music (talk) 16:48, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Photos of State Congressmen

I know that it's okay to upload a photo of a U.S. Senator or Representative from the Congress website because they are in the public domain. What about State Senators and Representatives? Particularly Ohio. The Ohio Senate website, for example, has an official photo of every member the same way the U.S. Senate does. Would this be considered to be in the public domain? http://www.ohiosenate.gov/directory.html I have not seen any link telling me so. I've uploaded images on Misplaced Pages before, but I try to avoid doing so because I'm not too much familiar with licensing, and the policies seem to be very strict. But I'm trying to start adding images to articles that don't have one, mostly lawmakers. --Xxhopingtearsxx (talk) 15:27, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Unless there is an explicit statement saying the photos are published under an acceptable license or are in the public domain, we should treat them as non-free content. In that case it means, none of those images can be used at Misplaced Pages per WP:NFC#UUI#1. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:46, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
I believe they would be appropriate if they were taken for example by an employee of the US government as part of that persons official duties (I don't know right know where the guideline for that is), but I guess we would need a proof of that. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
WP:PD#U.S. government works is the guideline I mean. The problem is, it is hard to determine whether those photos qualify as U.S. government works or not. I don't think that the mere presence of a photo on The Ohio Senate website constitutes a proof that the photo is a U.S. Government work. For example, the photo might have been explicitly licensed for that use and not be under a license that Misplaced Pages considers free. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:58, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
At best, those pictures might have been taken by an employee of the Ohio Senate, in which case it would fall under whatever copyright position the State of Ohio takes (most U.S. states do NOT waive copyright, unlike the Federal government). It is possible that many or all of them were taken by a professional photographer, who retains her or his copyright unless it has been sold to some other person. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:30, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

What you probably don't know since you are new here is that you could have undone your own edits and copied and pasted your work into the right section. Coming here to ask your question is a great start. It's sometimes a bit complex to explain with precision how to undo thing. It's usually a matter of viewing the History tab, editing the version before the one where you made the error, and saving that. Put in the edit summary that you have reverted yourself. Then start again.
It happens that a couple of us have made the correction already. One corrected the erroneous addition, and I then put your text in Wisconsin, but pruned it a little. If you prefer the fuller version do feel perfectly at liberty to improve the piece. Neither I nor you are correct, but we all reach consensus by our edits and we become better than any individual can be. Or that is the theory! Fiddle Faddle (talk) 16:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Nonsense date

Good catch. The problem comes with trying to put unknown info into the "death date and age" template. From the info that I can find the birth year is only speculation and the month and day for both birth and death are unknown so I have removed the template and just left the year of death. If anyone can find WP:RSs for the missing info plz feel free to add it to the article for Léandre and update the table. I would add one more thing - the article mentions a little girl who also survived (Havivra Da Ifrile) of whom nothing else seems to be known. It is quite possible that she outlived Léandre and consideration might be given to removing his name from the table as WP:SPECULATION. I will leave that for other editors to decide. MarnetteD | Talk 17:58, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Using Ctrl-F, I found 7 more nonsense dates. I'm fixing them though. NealCruco (talk) 18:13, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
It seems like the template itself needs attention. I'm guessing that "0" dates are supposed to represent "unknown". Generally speaking "0=unkown" is preferable to leaving a blank parameter; "unknown" is distinct from "missing", which a blank parameter implies. ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 19:02, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

This article seems to be chock full of problems, because the Death date and age template is only suitable for Gregorian dates, not Julian dates. When used for Julian dates it emits false metadata. Jc3s5h (talk) 19:56, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

PcCareSupport article removed

Dear Misplaced Pages,

We have recently had trouble providing information about our business. We have attempted to comply with your article standards, and felt we complied with the terms of not self promoting. Unfortunately Misplaced Pages editors disagreed with us on the terms of self promotion and on notability guidelines.

We are confused as you have listed a competitor http://en.wikipedia.org/IYogi whom's submission seems to be more self promoting than ours ever attempted at being. Particularly the blatant promotion found regarding "Digital Home Plan", and mentioning of plan costs. This is not a revolutionary, unique, or provident idea.

As well the notability guidelines are confusing as well, it begs to argue what is notable. We are a successful business, service, and community contributor whom has been considered noteworthy by various Utah and national media and prestigious venture capital competitions, which we find it disconcerting that Misplaced Pages in it's efforts to provide fair and balanced access to information would consider our company un-noteworthy. Members of our community consider us so.

Our company profile was simply details about our company and recent noteworthy events, which appears below our signature. If you could please indicate the appropriate guidelines we have been in obstruction of, as we might take the steps to rectify and provide you at Misplaced Pages the highest quality information that we have come to know Misplaced Pages by. We are very appreciative of your efforts at Misplaced Pages, and for your consideration in this matter. We eagerly await your response.

Thank you for looking into this Orange Mike, and I appreciate the quick response.

I apologize for placing the copy of our article here, I was just not sure where else to provide it so that we may receive feedback on what guidelines we did not meet, so that we may take steps to resolve this situation. I understand what you mean by including us by default of another article like ours. Though I did mention and comment upon what is noteworthy standards. As I am sure you read our article, it is not self promotion, but a objectionable view of a company that has become noteworthy in national and Utah medias.

Not to beat a dead horse, I query, what is noteworthy in Wikipedias moderators eyes, what constitutes self promotion, and how may we seek inclusion with an article about a business in Misplaced Pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.7.121.221 (talk) 17:26, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Short of the issues of a obvious conflict of interest and the fact that we ourselves will not submit nor encourage the submission of information about our company, we are interested in the ideas of notability, the terms which the article was removed.

In your notability guidelines http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:CORP ... we believe we are well within notability guidelines. The references were from third party sources that were both regional and national. They were effectively press that we did not seek out. These are quality and prestigious sources that sought out our company and effectively promoted the quality of our company, employees, and services.

We are just confused as to why an article that did meet the guidelines in which it was rejected by would have been removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.7.121.221 (talk) 00:03, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Moving a discussion

A user started a content dispute/debate on my User talk with another user that has nothing to do with me and I've asked him User:Steven Zhang to move the discussion, but he has refused. I would like to move the dispute to his User talk, and would like to know if there is a special way to do it properly (or, do I just cut/paste, including sigs & timestamps?). Thank u for instructions. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 23:26, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

This issue's been resolved, but I'd still like to learn the proper way to move a discussion. Thx. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:37, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

How to gain exclusive editorial control over an article.

Can the author of new novel, published by a major publishing company, create a first-time reference page on that novel and gain exclusive control over the contents of that wiki page? Can the author of the novel write the basic plot wiki article and lock it from changes by everyone but wiki administrators? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.98.149 (talk) 23:45, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I know, but I figured I'd tell them it was technically possible, even though policy is for good reason against it. - Purplewowies (talk) 06:00, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
But what they are asking is not technically possible. —teb728 t c 09:08, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
It is technically possible to fully protect an article, but it wouldn't be used for that purpose, and if the author themselves wanted to edit it after full protection, they would need to be an administrator. It's really neither here nor there because none of this would ever happen. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:23, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Facebook groups for gay Mormons

Greetings,

I am writing to you to ask if Misplaced Pages will consider special circumstances and allow what would probably not generally merit inclusion per the normal guidelines to be submitted into Misplaced Pages.

I represent several pro-gay Mormon forums on Facebook. We are the parties that coordinated the nation-wide Mormons for Marriage Equality showings at various Gay Pride Parades this summer and fall. We did this because we, active Mormons, are attempting to come to the rescue of our own gay children that are intimidated and silenced into great desperation and often suicide. I believe our gay-suicide rates are higher than any other group in the country, especially when so many go entirely unreported (the family knew that the deceased took his/her life because of severe depression likely caused by rejection and intimidation that they themselves were practicing and so do not reveal to anyone the nature of the depression as the death is reviewed and made public). Such people are also not mourned; no one wants to encourage sympathy for gay people in our community which wants to appear very righteous. Our group is asking new questions; the answers imply that those suicide deaths tragic, preventable, and WRONG. We ask questions that are often considered "heretical" in Mormon-land: "What is God's Plan of Happiness for His LGBT children?" By asking these questions we are essentially rejecting much of Mormon doctrine on this topic as incomplete and needing additional revelation. This is a stunning critique for a Mormon to make of the leadership, and several of us have been in or are barely avoiding church "court" which can excommunicate us from the faith of our fathers.

Part of our problem is that many of the suffering gay people we are trying to reach finally DO reach out for help, but they only find the Mormon church's DECOY -- it is called Mormons Building Bridges --- and it seeks to increase sympathy and understanding but it actively deletes posts by gay children and adults who are expressing hurt, bewilderment, or pain, and especially deletes or bans people who ask for fair treatment. That forum does not want any of the regular, traditional Mormons who visit to understand the depth of the pain that current policies are causing the gay children. Gay folks are leaving that forum in more pain than they started, confused that the Mormons who seemed so inclusive and kind in the summer no longer want to talk about real issues (it's because they are talking to decoys). Because so many gay Mormon kids are on the edge already, this is really dangerous. The Mormon Church has us out-maneuvered. They have significantly longer reach and resources.

We are finding ourselves cut off from those we would like to serve. By necessity the facebook groups are locked and invisible to the general facebook community. Still, by word of mouth we are able to help many children and young adults come to peace with themselves as God made them. We often arrange for "advocates" as the child may come out, so that the child is not thrown out of the home or if rejected, has somewhere to go.

So, even though our group would likely not usually meet your standards to create a new entry, we are asking for special allowance to do so. In my opinion, the Mormons Building Bridges group would not be able to prevail upon you to open a similar entry for themselves *because* they are merely a forum supporting the Mormon Church's current views.

We will only talk about our group. We would avoid controversy as much as we can.

We are trying to save lives, by helping the desperate to find those who want to love them as is. That's us.

Sincerely,

Mungagungadin1971 (talk) 07:09, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Please post the links to the articles concerned - I can't find anything under the title's you've mentioned. Articles about films would normally mention the director but for the director to be notable as an individual requires that there be sufficient good quality published source material available that discusses you in sufficient detail. Director Peter G. Neil on IMDb 74.60.29.141 (talk) 11:39, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
No, IMDB is a user-created site and so, like Misplaced Pages, it is not a reliable source. See WP:IMDB.--ukexpat (talk) 14:14, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
It's not only that IMDB is not reliable but also that anyone who is even remotely connected to a film has an IMDB entry. I've worked on a couple small films and have an IMDB entry. Though I am nowhere near notable enough for inclusion here. Dismas| 15:57, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Fixing Incorrect Redirects

Generally I fix something in Misplaced Pages when I'm looking for help and Misplaced Pages doesn't have the answer. (Though sometimes I refer to my Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook collection to provide additional references. But I digress (see Max Shulman)).

My problem today is with "Data normalization" which is a redirection page to Database Normalization. This is in error. Database Normalization is a special case of Data Normalization. "Normalization" is actually canonization (or canonicalization if you prefer), the process of reducing something to its canonical form.

I encountered this because I am designing a computer based training class on COBOL secure defensive programming and the issue is "Input Validation" and proper input validation requires that the input data be normalized prior to validation; e.g., translating various character encodings into a single character set. This is "Data Normalization" not "Database Normalization."

So. I don't know how to go about fixing an incorrect redirect. Is it as simple as just changing the redirection page? I am willing to write a new article for "Data normalization" but I am busy right now. I would like the current "Data normalization" page deleted until I (or someone) can write a new article. How do I proceed? Softtest123 (talk) 12:16, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you can just edit the redirect page after clicking "Redirected from ..." on the target page. See Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects. You can change the target or turn it into an article. Like for all other pages, only administrators can delete a redirect. See Misplaced Pages:Redirects for discussion for how to nominate a redirect for deletion. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:26, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll try to find the time today to create a stub article. I think I need to leave the page there because it will need an explanation on the talk page. Softtest123 (talk) 13:20, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I imagine each page should also have at the top one of those For , see: Or perhaps See also at the bottom would be better, since most people arriving at the page would understand the distinction. ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 19:07, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
AKA a hatnote, see {{About}}.--ukexpat (talk) 18:57, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
If you're starting from a situation where the redirect is incorrect, then it may not be safe to assume that readers would understand the distinction. (What is obvious to the experet isn't obvious to the layman.) A hatnote would seem more appropriate than a "See also". Naturally if a new article is being written it will need references to reliable sources to justify its content. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:16, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm surprised there isn't already an adequate article on the subject; just about any form of data can be 'normalized' in some fashion. I added a brief definition regarding "other forms" with a 'More' template linking to a sub-list. Almost adequate for now? ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 20:25, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Naglaa. The different language Wikipedias are all entirely independent, and the English one has no jurisdiction over the Arabic one; furthermore, different Wikipedias can have different rules. If this happened in the English Misplaced Pages, I would suggest you look at the history of the article and see which editors had reverted your change, and what reason they gave; but I cannot read enough Arabic to tell if there is anything useful there. Again, in English Misplaced Pages, changes like this are often made by editors who do not understand the importance of reliable sources, and other editors revert the addition of unsourced material; but I don't know whether this might be what happened here or not. --ColinFine (talk) 13:54, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

If that doesn't work, there are also websites that let you input a flower's colour, number of petals, habitat and so on and they suggest possibilities: the more information you give, the closer you will get to an answer. For example, , , . (The first two are UK flowers only). You could find one that covers the country in which the pictures were taken and give it a try. - Karenjc 14:49, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Squeegee_man article talking false thing about me

Hi, this is the link to the article : http://en.wikipedia.org/Squeegee_man

The problem is : On this article, they talk about an incident ( in the : Canada section ) where this squeegee kid attacked a person in his car.

This story is about me. and I didnt attack the person, the driver attacked me. He was 3 time bigger than me for crying out loud. No one takes my story because I am the "evil" squeegee kid that the media turn. The toronto sun story ( that they quote as proof ) is completely biased, and is the version of the driver only. No one ever ask me to tell the story.

I tried editing and giving a more complete and less biased information about squeejee kids but it keeps deleting itself. I am asking to please remove this : "A few days later, on June 7, a man was attacked with a squeegee by a 23-year-old at Queen Street and Spadina Avenue. The alleged attacker was charged, and the driver admitted to hospital, to deal with the gash." from the : Canada section.

This is just to make people hate on squeegee kids and their only intention is to make us look bad. The driver attacked me, yet the toronto sun keep saying im the bad one for defending myself. The judge even told in court that it was the drivers fault, but the only reason I am being punished is because I went to far. wich is understandable, but its also understandable I was afraid and reacted accordingly when someone 3 time my size came to, and I quote "Kick my dirty ass" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neogodhobo (talkcontribs) 05:49, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't see how inclusion of that information could be interpreted as an attack against you. Nobody is named or otherwise identified in the text about the incident, or even in the cited source so unless you actually tell people it's about you, nobody would ever know. Roger (talk) 14:09, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry if you feel the article misrepresents what happened. Your edits are not "deleting themselves" - they are being removed by other editors, because they are unsourced. The problem for Misplaced Pages is that that account is referenced to a reliable source (CBC), while yours is an account from an anonymous person on the internet: see WP:Verifiability for why we cannot use that. If you can find a reliable published source which gives more of the story, you could add it - though since you tell us you have a conflict of interest it would be better to post on the article's talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 17:21, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Editing notices

I have received a message stating that my current IP address made a modification to an entry that was reverted due to its non-constructive nature. I also noted that my IP has also been banned due to a multitude of vandalism throughout various entries. I have never made any form of modification to any Misplaced Pages page, save for maybe a grammatical correction on the rarest of occasions, and find this troubling. Looking at my IP history the modifications are all stupid, nonsensical, and highly immature interjections and revisions; these are not modifications that I have made. I was wondering if there is a possibility that this is a mistake and would like to know of any possible course of action I could take if someone is somehow using my IP address to do such. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.8.226.80 (talk) 07:49, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Specifically, the submission seems to be written in a promotional tone (see WP:NOTPROMOTION), and it does not cite any source whatsoever (see Misplaced Pages:Verifiability). To ensure that articles meet our inclusion criteria (set out in Misplaced Pages:Notability), we expect to see citations of sources that are independent of the article's subject (further explained at Misplaced Pages:Identifying reliable sources). If you add those citations, you may be able to get the article accepted. PleaseStand (talk) 10:38, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

I wish the worst anyone could say of me was that I did something not very well 22 years ago, and made up for it the following year. Anyway, Rojomoke is right, the proper place to discuss this, and maybe mention more recent accomplishments, is the article's talk page. Maproom (talk) 14:48, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Citations

I am currently reading and editing the Misplaced Pages page for Paul Collins (Artist) and have a few questions about corrections that have been flagged. At two separate points in the article, it has been suggested that citations need to be added. One of them occurs after a statement about the attendees of the unveiling of the series "Great Beautiful Black Women" and the other is about the executive boards the artist has served on. I feel like I have read through the information about citations and biographies of living persons quite well, but there is a lot of information and I was hoping for some clarification. I know the information that needs citations to be true, because it came from the artist himself. My question is, how do I cite this? I know there are certificates to prove that he served on these boards and somewhere is probably an article about the unveiling of the series, so do I need to cite these sources? Could I speak to the artist and cite an interview with him even if it is an unpublished interview? I just want to make sure I am citing correctly, so if you could clarify what needs to be done I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,

No. Personal knowledge and unpublished sources are not acceptable to Misplaced Pages. Misplaced Pages is looking for verifiability by references to published reliable sources. I would recommend that you read WP:Referencing for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:59, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but to go into Misplaced Pages information must be verifiable by other parties, which means it must have been published by a reliable source. Obviously, personal recollections, interviews, and the like are not going to meet our criteria. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:08, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Treatment of citations made by a quoted author

At Mind-body problem a difference of opinion has arisen regarding citations in quoted material. For example, a citation occurs in an excerpt quoted from an article by Robb and Heil as follows:

"Some philosophers (e.g., Davidson 1963; Mele 1992) insist that the very notion of psychological explanation turns on the intelligibility of mental causation."

In the bibliography of this article is found the information:

Davidson, D., 1963, “Actions, Reasons, and Causes”, Journal of Philosophy 60: 685-700. Reprinted in Davidson 1980, pp. 3-19.
––––, 1980, Essays on Actions and Events, Oxford: Clarendon Press.

The query arises as to whether it is appropriate to replace the reference (e.g., Davidson 1963; Mele 1992) in the quoted text with a footnote containing the bibliographic information, or whether, as suggested by MachineElf, it is preferable to leave the citation in the quotation as it is, and leave it up to the reader to seek out the original article and search its bibliography.

A subtlety of this question is the following: the authors' provided bibliography provides some information about the source, but typically a WP footnote contains more information, for example, in this case one might find:

Davidson, D. (1963). "Actions, Reasons, and Causes". Journal of Philosophy. 60 (23): 685–700. Reprinted in Davidson, D (2001). "Chapter 1: Actions, Reasons, and Causes". Essays on Actions and Events (2nd ed.). Oxford: Clarendon Press. pp. 3–19. ISBN 0199246270.

It is the view of MachineElf that this extended WP-style footnote is a violation of the spirit of a quotation, amounting to an editorial revision of the original authors' views. In this connection, notice that the WP footnote refers to the second edition of the Oxford text, not the original edition cited by the authors.

What are the nuances in handling these matters? Brews ohare (talk) 17:15, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

My own view on this matter is that introducing links to on-line versions of sources is an aid to the reader to be encouraged, and a switch to more recent editions of works than those actually referred to is OK provided the updated source does not include serious modifications of the original text. Where some concern over content is warranted, the WP footnote can be supplemented with a caveat such as This is a later edition of the source cited in the original work, and has been somewhat revised (condensed) (supplemented), or some such disclaimers. Add incoming links for orphaned article

I have been contributing to the Boss School of Music article recently, and its not linked from other articles and is therefore an orphan. Where should I add incoming links to point to this article? in "See Also" sections? from which articles?. And what navboxes can I include it under considering the school was a music education institute and went through a highly controversial period with court cases etc. Thanks. Nikhil D. Infobox image not working

I have just tried to add the unit insignia to the Infobox of 105 Squadron SAAF but instead of displaying the image is displays the file name. What is the cause of this? Roger (talk) 18:26, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

The documentation at Template:Infobox military unit says the value for the image parameter must be given in the form ]. I fixed it with this edit. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 18:33, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm used to infoboxes that want only the file name without any formatting - I suppose Wiki-wide consistency would be too much to ask for :) Roger (talk) 18:37, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Michael Licona

My father-in-law is Michael Licona. Someone is impersonating him on Facebook and has edited his Misplaced Pages page to state falsehoods about him. For instance, my father-in-law was not born on November 25th, 1995. His actual birthday is 7-17-61. Can you please prevent this person from having access to editing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.142.60.166 (talk) 19:56, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, we cannot do anything about the impersonation on Facebook since we are not associated with them so you should try contacting Facebook. However, there are editors keeping up with removing the false modification of his birthdate on the Misplaced Pages article and I will have my eyes on it as well. Thanks for letting us know. Cheers, SassyLilNugget (talk) 20:53, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
And of course, it's also possible that the person on Facebook is another person, also named Michael Licona. I know there are other Mike Lowreys there besides me. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:24, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Format of initials in titles of biographies

I have noticed that articles about two current South African Test cricketers who are known by their initials have been moved from what I would consider to be the correct format, involving the use of periods and spaces, to an abbreviated form utilising no periods and no spaces. I cannot see anything in the style guidelines that clarifies standard format. The articles in question are JP Duminy and AB de Villiers which, in my opinion, should be titled J. P. Duminy and A. B. de Villiers, the latter currently a redirect. In both cases, the use of initials is correct per WP:COMMONNAME and it is only a question of formatting. Please advise. Thank you. --Old Lanky (talk) 22:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Jump the queue? (doi)

I've been waiting patiently (more than "a few minutes") for the doi-bot to do its thing. Should I "jump the queue"? Does that mean jump to the head of the queue? - jump out of the queue? -or- ? (Re: Tarantula#References) ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 22:48, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

November 2

im a bit confused on how the process works...

My article is stuck in the sandbox and i wish to post and upload more info including photos ...please give me some direction.

Thx CarlaCite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlaannparra (talkcontribs) 00:18, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that it's stuck there. It's there because it hasn't been moved to the main article space. And to be honest, it shouldn't be moved as it is right now. You have not supplied a single source for the information. I'll post a welcome on your talk page which may help to explain things a bit more thoroughly. Dismas| 03:00, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

URL with funny characters

I'm citing an article with the DOI of 10.1002/(SICI)1520-6548(199810)13:7<649::AID-GEA1>3.0.CO;2-6 and the title "The Geomorphology of Sugar Loaf Mound: Prehistoric Cemeteries and the Formation of Loess Cones in the Lower Wabash Valley", so I'd envisioned linking it as "". Unfortunately, that displays as

<649::AID-GEA1>3.0.CO;2-6 The Geomorphology of Sugar Loaf Mound: Prehistoric Cemeteries and the Formation of Loess Cones in the Lower Wabash Valley

How can I get the whole thing to display properly, e.g. "The Geomorphology of Sugar Loaf Mound: Prehistoric Cemeteries and the Formation of Loess Cones in the Lower Wabash Valley"? I've tried replacing the < and > characters with &lt; and &gt;, but it doesn't have any visible effect. Please note that I've inserted zero-width spaces between &l/&g and t; in the previous sentence; don't copy/paste them :-) Nyttend (talk) 02:06, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

< and > are html and not for url's. You can use urlencode: "The Geomorphology of Sugar Loaf Mound: Prehistoric Cemeteries and the Formation of Loess Cones in the Lower Wabash Valley". PrimeHunter (talk) 03:25, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Help:URL will show that you need to encode the < and > as %3C and %3E repectively. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) 06:21, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Or you can use Template:Cite journal and the formatting will be taken care of automagically. Roger (talk) 08:12, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Feedback

Is there anyway to give feedback? I started to respond, but don't see anyway to do so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.252.161.19 (talk) 04:25, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

If your feedback is about a particular article, you can leave it at the article's talk page. Just click the "Talk" tab at the top of the article, and then click "New section" to start a new discussion thread. However, if you think you can improve the article yourself, by all means do so! You don't need to get our permission first; just start editing, keeping our policies and guidelines in mind. PleaseStand (talk) 07:09, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

1210s

Can someone take a look at 1210s. In my browser it shows a bunch of errors, Expression error: Unrecognised word "s"., and I cannot figure out where they are from. Thanks Illia Connell (talk) 07:01, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Might have something to do with: Warning: Default sort key "1210s" overrides earlier default sort key "1210" ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:26, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Fixed with an edit to "1210". PleaseStand (talk) 07:27, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Did that have something to do with </onlyinclude> ? ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:41, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, 1210 transcludes {{C13 year in topic}} and in turn {{Year in other calendars}}, which assumes the page name is a number and therefore can be used in mathematical expressions. By adding back the </onlyinclude>, I prevented the transclusion of those templates in 1210s. PleaseStand (talk) 08:13, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Move discussion

I am considering moving a discussion from a talk page to a different (more relevant) one. Although I believe I could do this properly, I imagine there is some sort of WP protocol for doing this, and I don't want to mess it up.
Re, discussion here: Talk:Spider_silk#Ballooning vs. Kiting
Belongs here: Talk:Ballooning_(spider)
I am willing to do this myself, but would need some instruction to do it properly. ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:33, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

You should paste the discussion's wikitext into the other article's talk page, mentioning just after the section heading that you moved the discussion there (e.g. using {{Moved discussion from}}). Then on the old talk page, you should replace everything but the section heading with a link to the new talk page (e.g. {{Moved discussion to}}). That way, users looking for the discussion in its original location can still find it. PleaseStand (talk) 07:50, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay - thanks, will do (tomorrow, it's past my bedtime). ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:56, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Distinguish note/Hat note for non existing article

Reason for keeping
