The Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID) is the interdisciplinary center at McGill University in Montreal for the researching and teaching of international development theory, policy and practice.
Founded in 2008, ISID absorbed the former Center for Developing Areas Studies. Its founding director, Dr. Philip Oxhorn, envisioned an institute that brought together theory and practice and encompassed various disciplines in order to facilitate unique and dynamic teaching programs and practical work on development related issues in a changing global context.
ISID's mandate is to bridge the worlds of theory and practice of international development. ISID looks at development in terms of democratic government, while putting strong emphasis on economic development..
ISID focuses its broader research interests into three distinct clusters: Economic Development & Living Standards, States and State Institutions, Civil Society: Identity, Diversity and the Mediation of Difference.
Since 2009 ISID has supported research and discussion on the issue of public-private partnerships, particularly within the extractive and mining industries.
In October 2011, ISID launched its Executive Education Program which was designed to prepare professionals for work opportunities in international development. In March 2012, ISID held a three-day conference where extractive industry, local community members and academics discussed the opportunities and challenges of facilitating public-private partnerships.
Wayne Dunn is a member of the Leadership Council, working in CSR and Public-Private Partnerships.
Robin McLay, ISID’s first Executive Director, plays a role in the design and marketing of the Executive Education program, Leadership Council and International Advisory Board. McLay is a Fullbright scholar, in September 2011 he was designated Fullbrighter of the Month, and holds degrees from McGill University, The London School of Economics and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Joe Clark is a Founding Member of the ISID International Advisory Board and an ISID professor of practice of public-private partnerships.
