Eur Ing Robert Brown Gillespie OBE BSc MBA CEng FIMechE (born 1947) is the Baron of Blackhall.
Blackhall was educated at Ipswich School, Sussex University and INSEAD. Between 1970 and 2010, he was a consultant with McKinsey & Co., chief executive of industrial companies in France and in the United Kingdom, and board director of industrial companies in the UK, France, Italy and Norway. He was Vice Chairman of the British Non-Ferrous Metals Federation and Chairman of the Federation of Copper and Copper-alloy Foundry Owners (in France, STCA FEDEM) (1991-1995.) As an international specialist in Operational Improvement he is a frequent speaker at technical seminars and author of specialised technical papers on Change Management.
He was Chairman of the French Branch of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (2004-2007) and is an Institution Gold Medalist; Chairman of the British Luncheon-1916 (2005) in Paris; Chairman of the British Community Committee (2006-2009) in Paris; Director of the Thomas More Institute in Paris (2007-2012.) In 2013, he became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers in the City of London.
In 1977, Blackhall married Sylvie Claude Maisonrouge, daughter of Jacques Maisonrouge, Grand Officier of the Légion d'Honneur and, except for three years in Chicago, he and Lady Blackhall have resided in Paris ever since. The heir apparent to the barony is the present holder's sister, Marina Gillespie, future Baroness of Blackhall.
Under the name, Bob Gillespie, he has written "Machiavelli and The Mayflower," (La Rémige Publishers 2009) an essay in comparative European cultures, and a cold-war thriller, "The Angry Sky." (La Rémige Publishers 2012.) The Baron is a Companion of the British Association of the Order of Malta and has written the "Lourdes Carer Guide"(La Rémige Publishers 2012) for those of the Order accompanying the disabled.
Blackhall descends from, Ulster Scot, Joseph Gillespie of Culkeeran and Kilcarn, (1795-1866) land owner. His grandfather, Robert Brown Gillespie (1892-1962,) served with the Highland Light Infantry from 1908 to 1921, first in India, then in France during WWI (POW Magdeburg 1915-1918,) and his father, John Bonner Gillespie, OBE, (1922-2008) served with the Desert Air Force in North Africa and then with the Royal Air Force in Italy from 1940 to 1946 during WWII.
