Your moves

Hello, there is a reason why indigenous communities are officially named. Community takes preference over specific place so the name of a place is suffixed by Community. www.ga.gov.au gives official names and it is not up to us to change them. Regards Crusoe8181 (talk) 09:04, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Crusoe. I understand the objection; I will open a move request instead. However, we don't use official names in Misplaced Pages: as it explains here, we use common names. The only official names applied to Australian geographical articles is local government areas, as it explains here. The Gazetteer of Australia gives the official name for the physical, but both the communities and the places are commonly referred to as simply Mantamaru and Papulankutja, respectively. The rename is not necessarily meant to reflect a shift of subject from community to place, simply to reflect common usage. Osiris (talk) 11:36, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
As a side note, I also see that the Gazetteer has a remarkable amount of duplicate entries. Papulankutja, for example, is recorded as both "Papulankutja Community" (WA100189755) and "Blackstone Community" (WA100157684). My own community, Kaltukatjara, is recorded under two separate, yet identical entries under the name "Kaltukatjara", and a third under the name "Kaltukatjara (Docker River)". I've never used it before, so perhaps you could help me understand whether there is a difference I'm not seeing. Osiris (talk) 11:43, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Another side note - a lot of the communities are tagged as orphan articles - I have just created a list article of the Western Australian aboriginal communities - should be more accessible, I hope.. sats 14:49, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Good idea. I didn't realise there were so many named with that way. It must be just the Western Australian government that does it that way. Osiris (talk) 15:50, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
M is a map reference, usually a rural property; U is an unofficial, usually historical name; O is an official name, so Kaltukatjara exists only once. Blackstone is separated by some distance from Papulankutja. The use of Community in placenames is a recognition that nomadic peoples do not name places where they live, but rather name where they may be living at a particular time by their own name, though I would suspect that the word mob is more commonly used in the north of Australia. Crusoe8181 (talk) 09:49, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining that. I should have read the legend. Makes more sense now. It must contain some errors though: Blackstone and Papulankutja are the same place and the same community (I know, because I've been there many, many times and I know that country like I know the back of my hand). That naming custom you speak of is an interesting one, but it definitely doesn't apply to Western Desert groups. We definitely name the places we live (I am Anangu, in case that wasn't clear) and so did those before me when they lived "nomadically". Mantamaru has always been known as Mantamaru; in my language, it was called Panamaru. But, getting back to common usage, which is the crux of the matter... I think, after seeing the category, I might submit a combined move request (at least for the articles on places I'm familiar with). Osiris (talk) 14:13, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Simple Wiki proposal archived

Hello,

I just noticed that the Simple Wiki proposal at the Village Pump has been archived. Is that the end of the proposal? Or is there still scope for some admin to review the decision and decide accordingly?

Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 12:39, 11 March 2013 (UTC) (TB please!)

I'm not sure. It was just archived by the bot (which is on a timer). I did request a review of the closure on WP:AN/RFC, so hopefully someone will get around to that eventually. It's quite frustrating to have had the same proposal closed twice in this less-than-competent manner by the same user. If nothing happens in a week's time, perhaps you could ask directly at WP:AN... Osiris (talk) 11:24, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
I have asked at AN. Please see the thread. 110.227.239.137 (talk) 08:12, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
It got archived. What next? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 15:45, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, firstly: thanks for taking the time to do that. I know you said you were very busy, and I'm the same unfortunately at the moment. So it was good of you to do it. I don't think that there's much left that we can do. The discussion had a good amount of participation and it didn't bring a sufficient level of consensus. But consensus can change, I guess, so perhaps if the article feedback continues to present the same issues then we can bring it up again in the future. Osiris (talk) 07:43, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Alright. Thanks for your help. Lets hope the next time someone brings this up, the consensus will be much more clear-cut. Hopefully there'll be other ways we can bring about much needed change and improvement on both these Wikipedias. Thanks a ton!TheOriginalSoni (talk) 09:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Article Feedback deployment

Hey Osiris; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:02, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Nunavut regions

Hey, it seems you're more active over here ;) You expressed interest in figuring out how to best organize Nunavut content on Wikivoyage, and I'm pretty sure you're the only one who has done so who actually knows something about the province! I've drawn up a first draft map, and the conversation has restarted. Care to comment? Your input would be very much valued. --Peter 04:16, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Oh, lord! It's been almost a year since I said I was going to work on that. Time flies like crazy: It has been on my to-do list for a long time, I'm sorry I haven't gotten to it yet. I'll have a look at what you've done tomorrow and see if we can formulate a structure based on the amount of information we're likely to need for each destination. Osiris (talk) 17:33, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Great! I'll have time on Monday to rework the map per your recommendations. --Peter 21:34, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
