History

Prodigal LLC, led by Oklahoma City businessman Bob Funk, Jr., pursued a bid for a franchise in the United Soccer Leagues' Professional Division (USL Pro) in 2013. The bid put Prodigal at odds with Sold Out Strategies, a group initially led by Brad Lund, a former associate of the Funk family. Sold Out Strategies had been awarded an amateur franchise in the USL Premier Development League for the 2013 seasonOklahoma City FC – and intended to pursue a USL Pro franchise as well. Following Prodigal's bid, Sold Out Strategies also started pursuing a franchise in the new North American Soccer League (NASL).

Sold Out Strategies managed to secure a lease to Taft Stadium on June 17, 2013. Prodigal was awarded the USL Pro franchise on July 2, 2013, with an intended launch date of 2014. Sold Out Strategies was awarded the NASL franchise on July 25, 2013, leaving two professional soccer teams in Oklahoma City.

Prodigal LLC also also operates the Oklahoma City Barons ice hockey team and formerly owned the Oklahoma City RedHawks baseball team and the Oklahoma City Blazers hockey team.

On December 20, 2013, Energy FC announced an affiliation agreement with 2013 MLS Champions Sporting Kansas City. Also, recently retired SKC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen was named head coach.

Stadium

The Energy have announced a plan for a soccer-specific stadium designed by Oklahoma City architecture firm ADG. The proposed stadium has seating capacity of 7,000 with future plans to expand to 20,000 to meet MLS standards.
