Disambiguation link notification for February 25
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited The Tammy Grimes Show, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mono (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi. Just wanted to thank you for your objective common-sense support for my editing on the Fontanne page. I know most of what was contentious has been rv and I am fine with that. Just wish someone had advised me on my talk page of the ORN colloquy, so I could at least have participated. Yours, Quis separabit? 19:02, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Nomination of Jenna Rose for deletion
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Jenna Rose is suitable for inclusion in Misplaced Pages according to Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Jenna Rose (4th nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Rogerthat94 (talk) 10:48, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:WikiProject Integrity/doc
A tag has been placed on Template:WikiProject Integrity/doc, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Misplaced Pages criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that your page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Herostratus (talk) 02:03, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

WP on BP - Potential Blog Post
I've been following the 'Arturo on BP' saga intently, and I'm writing a draft for a blog post/article over at Wikipediocracy. Naturally the emphasis would be on the conflict on Misplaced Pages, between SlimVirgin, Silver seren, and yourself, among others. Would you be against me using a few quotes from you? I'd show you (and the others) a draft before publication.→StaniStani 03:41, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, sure. Right, did you Google "Arturo at BP"? Wow. I don't need to see a draft, thanks. Herostratus (talk) 03:54, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Awww, I was looking for your post but all there is is something about some Norwegian mook. Anyway, while I don't need to see a draft, could I make a request? If possible, I'd like to be characterized as a "deranged ideologue" (even better would be "evil deranged ideologue" but that's asking a lot) if possible. I'd prefer that to "ignorant thug" if that's OK. "Relentless annoying scold" would be OK as a compromise. What would be really great if the editors aligned with my general position could be described as my "minions" or "henchmen". I've always wanted henchmen (or minions). Herostratus (talk) 03:47, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, how about this for a lede: "If you hear a constant high-pitched whining coming from your computer, there's probably nothing wrong with your machine. It's just Herostratus or one of his crypto-Trotskyite comrades with another of their incessant anti-free-enterprise screeds..." Herostratus (talk) 17:46, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- On the off-chance you're reading this, and if you should happen to think I'm trying to win your heart with devil-may-care insouciance and self-deprecating humor, perhaps this will disabuse you: re this quote from you "Perhaps this site needs to destroy his anonymity. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. Discuss." here's a pro tip: if you're "not sure if that's a good idea or not", that may be nature's way of telling you that you're devoid of intelligence or character. I sure hope your little piece, if you actually produce it, takes special care to eviscerate me by name. I'd be ashamed if people like you didn't loathe me. Hi Herostratus, I've recently updated the article Conflict of interest editing on Misplaced Pages to include the recent incidents from 2012 and 2013. I'd appreciate your review to ensure they're fair. Cheers, Ocaasi 19:54, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Article notability notification
Hello. This message is to inform you that an article that you wrote recently, Rinehart (Harvard), has been tagged with a notability notice. This means that it may not meet Misplaced Pages's notability guidelines. Please note that articles which do not meet these criteria may be merged, redirected, or deleted. Please consider adding reliable, secondary sources to the article in order to establish the topic's notability. You may find the following links useful when searching for sources: Find sources: "Rinehart (Harvard)" – news · books · scholar · JSTOR · free images. Thank you for editing Misplaced Pages! Tone it down?
Would you consider softening that a bit, for the sake of dramalessness? There are other, more appropriate fora for calling people names. --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 16:35, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'd rather not. The man deliberately "votes" for options in order to damage the Misplaced Pages for personal amusement and says so openly. I'm not really calling him "names". He's a troll and glories in it, so we're both on the same page here, I think. He may have other, positive, qualities that I'm not aware of. Herostratus (talk) 18:58, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) My hopefully helpful suggestion would be to, rather than state the referenced point, just link to discussion where the point is made and consensed by others, or to the place on Wikipediocracy where the point can be seen by the reader. But I understand your point. --Lexein (talk) 19:45, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Should we be linking to a "place on Wikipediocracy" where a person who openly admits to wanting to damage Misplaced Pages as much as possible presents his attacks? My feeling is that we shouldn't. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:56, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Wales talk page
I appreciate your support of my position on the Wales talk page and calling out another editor for strange and unsupported comments. However, in the process you seem to have inadvertently inserted a link within my comment. See . This was last week and the discussion has now been archived to http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Jimbo_Wales/Archive_129#Anyone_interested_in_vetting_the_BP_and_Chevron_additions.3F I was going to go back into the archive and just remove it, but then I realized you may have wanted to make some other use of that link. Thanks again and I wish you success in this very frustrating and probably futile struggle. Coretheapple (talk) 17:20, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Sexology closed
An arbitration case regarding sexology has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:
- Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all articles dealing with transgender issues and paraphilia classification (e.g., hebephilia).
- User:Jokestress and User:James Cantor are banned from interacting with each other, commenting on and/or commenting about each other including their professional lives, works and on-wiki activities. This applies to all namespaces, but excludes dispute resolution that explicitly relates to both parties.
- User:Jokestress is indefinitely banned from the topic of human sexuality, including biographical articles.

Please do not be disruptive and remove the tags. I made my case on the talk page, I've filled the WP:BURDEN requirement. They should stay until the issues are addressed. I removed the warning, because this is the first time and you didn't seem clear on it. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:05, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
- Alright, calm down. No one is being disruptive. My reading of WP:BURDEN shows "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds... material." (emphasis in original). WP:BLP also has useful discussion of the matter. As far as I know this applies to tags also; I'm willing to be instructed otherwise. Assuming that you're correct on the merits, you should be able to demonstrate your case. Why not do so? A successful way to do this might well be to offer your improved versions of the lede and/or specific sections or passages on the talk page. Another way would be simply to edit the article to improve it. Specific suggestions are more likely to be accepted than general criticism.. Herostratus (talk) 01:33, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Regarding your message at Allen3's talk page, the process is not opaque at all if you would have taken the time to do a little bit of reading. The DYK project page explicitly explains how DYK nominations get processed: Misplaced Pages:Did you know#How a DYK nomination makes its way to the main page. As for who makes the "final" edit that gets the DYK onto the main page, it was not Allen3, it was whatever administrator moved the hook into the queue (as explained at the page I linked). As for where I explained the rationale behind my decision to approve the hook, it's in the diff that you already found. rʨanaɢ (talk) 19:15, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm a fairly new editor, but I'm confident that independent experienced editors will find Jmh649's actions significantly harmful to Misplaced Pages.

David Marchick
Hi again, Herostratus. This afternoon I posted some criticisms of the David Marchick article on its Talk page, here. Last year, after I'd finished working on the page, you raised some interesting questions about how to describe him. Then another editor expanded it dramatically in a way I don't think fits Misplaced Pages guidelines. If you have any thoughts to contribute there, I'd appreciate it. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 19:59, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hey there Herostratus, thanks again for your comments on the David Marchick article. Since no one else has commented yet, I just reached out to WP:Biography in the hopes of generating more discussion (which you may have already noticed, given the new notification systems). I'm definitely leaning towards implemented some changes based on your recommendation, but would like to hear from a few others before we start trimming back Uzma Gamal's work. More soon. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 14:39, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

- It looks fine, as I responded there. As you know, if this was a about a corporation, I'd have a different attitude. But living persons who are not well-known public figures should get a great deal of leeway. Herostratus (talk) 17:44, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

- I probably won't do that. I did address an appeal directly to closer. If that (or the closure review, which I'd like to avoid as these things tend toward acrimony and defensiveness) doesn't solve the problem, the best solution might be to run an RfC on the meta-question of whether it's legitimate to run a RfC on the issue. Assuming that succeeds (which it probably would, but if not so be it) to then re-open the earlier RfC. This would be tedious though. Herostratus (talk) 01:22, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Gregory Kohs
I think you hit the mark quite well. I know from other sources (Wikipediocracy, National Wiki Edits Examiner, etc.) that Kohs is mostly concerned that:
- Wikimedia Foundation is a U.S. tax-exempt educational organization
- Wikimedia Foundation promotes the use of its sites by children
- Wikimedia Foundation sites host a large amount of pornographic and adult-oriented content and images
- Wikimedia Foundation abides by children administrating and curating its hosted pornographic and adult-oriented material
- Sharing pornography with children is a crime in most, if not every, U.S. jurisdiction
- Wikimedia Foundation refuses to install even an optional content filter for users who don't wish to be exposed to pornographic and adult-oriented material
It's tough to document all of that, though, unless multiple, non-preferred sources are used. - 2001:558:1400:10:A8E0:A6C8:1F09:21B (talk) 19:25, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
- This sounds like a reasonable summary of his view on that matter, and these're also a reasonable points -- points I've made myself, although I don't think it's such a honkin' huge deal; it's partly a matter or principle rather than actual widespread damage being done to children, I'd guess. If he would write it like in some place we could ref, it might be good to lay it out like that in his article -- maybe.
- I probably wouldn't support that, though, because my personal opinion is that he probably doesn't much care about any of this and it's cover for his real beef against the Misplaced Pages, which I guess is partly purely personal and emotional (he was banned) and partly ideological. We should be careful about taking people's stated concerns at face value. As, for instance, politicians who want to cut taxes on the rich and cut food stamps will say that their #1 concern is looking out for the long-term interests of the poor, and so forth. It'd be wrong and unbalanced of us to present what those politicians say without giving a broader context of what's really going on with them, if we can.
- My advice to you personally is to be careful about taking what people say at fact value, especially cynical and manipulative people. (I'm not saying that Mr Kohs is cynical and manipulative. He's not! I'm saying that if you ever do run into anyone who is, your practice in not taking the words of Mr Kohs (who, let me stress, isn't cynical or manipulative) or anyone else at face value might stand you in good stead. You understand what I'm saying?) Cheers, Herostratus (talk) 21:58, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

minor quibble
First, I appreciate the herculean effort in closing the discussion at Misplaced Pages talk:Naming conventions (geographic names). But a quibble. You wrote
After a great deal more discussion -- again mostly centered around concepts of grammatical correctness -- The suggestion of the form "Columbus metropolitan area, Ohio" is proposed (actually User:Bkonrad and User:Frungi expressed the opinion that "Columbus metropolitan area (Ohio)" is even better; but User:BDD opined "This form seems to be an invention on our part, which should be avoided at all costs".
(emphasis added)
I think that in context, while BDD's comment was clearly in response to my comment, he was in fact agreeing with me and the "form" referenced in the comment was the proposal -- i.e., "City metropolitan area, State". older ≠ wiser 13:14, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
- Correct. I don't like the splitting of the city and the state, and I'm not thrilled that that's the way the discussion ended up going. That said, I do appreciate that the state is to be included only when necessary. There was no easy action here; I won't complain further. --BDD (talk) 18:08, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
- Right, I understood that and meant to express it; I dropped the closing paren at "...is even better;" so the meaning was changed. Herostratus (talk) 00:09, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Regarding the massive closure discussion, I don't envy you for taking on the task of making a solution to keep the peace, but I have a few other quibbles:
- You wrote:
"(User:Apteva then provides a subsection, "Other examples of incorrect usage", which shows some use of the one-comma form. These don't include the term "metropolitan area" and (by intention) aren't balanced by examples of the two-comma form, so not very germane here.)"
Assuming you were referring to this section, that was me. Not that I particularly mind the false attribution, but this may cause some confusion. - In reference to this recent closed RFC, you wrote:
"Support -- "My personal preference is not to punctuate unless it makes it easier for the reader" (but individual projects should decide) -- User:Tony1"
. I think this mischaracterises Tony's comment, which was:"Support—optional, and I agree with sroc that individual projects should not read this as a sign that they are free to straightjacket their editors into one or the other."
(Italics added for emphasis.) This contradicts your comment that "individual projects should decide". - In reference to the open RFC, you wrote:
"Here, the proposal is to keep the same rules for commas, but add the advice to recast the sentence to avoid the one-comma/two-comma problem."
The proposal "to avoid the one-comma/two-comma problem" is only in relation to the use of constructions as adjectives (e.g., Columbus, Ohio, metropolitan area), not in all cases (e.g., born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1973). - I note that the use of the en dash between states is inconsistent with WP:USPLACE, which provides: "A small number of unincorporated communities bear two states' names due to their peculiar locations across state lines (e.g., Glenrio, New Mexico and Texas)." The substitution of a dash also suggests the formation of a new state (e.g., "New Mexico–Texas").
—sroc 💬 06:24, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, User:sroc. Re your points:
- OK, sorry.
- OK, right. But, the proposals was: 1) MOS should be changed to make commas optional (in titles, in these cases) and 2) all pages within a certain Project be the same, and at the end of the day, Tony's "vote" was Support. Granted, with severe reservations, but in trying to reduce a large of amount of discussion to some manageable form some of the nuances get lost. It's more germane to me that he said "y personal preference is not to punctuate", although on looking it over I guess a more correct summary would be "Let folks do what they want, as long as it's consistent within the article". (That doesn't work well for article titles, though.) So you're correct that I mischaracterized his general thrust. However, it doesn't matter because as I said I said I didn't formally add these into the headcount because of the other factors making that discussion too different from the one I was closing; I was just laying it out as a display of what some people said. And anyway, I missed that Tony had already "voted" at the discussion and if I had caught that I wouldn't have included anything from him there, I was intending to only bring in voices that hadn't contributed to the discussion I was closing.
- OK, right, as adjectives. I don't think that changes anything in any important way though.
- Right, I saw that. However, the advice specifically mentions unincorporated areas. As soon as one of them was to incorporate, we'd split it into two articles I would suppose, as with Texarkana, Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas. A metro area is not an incorporated entity so it'd be a fair point to point to the unincorporated area thing as a precedent, but since the the passage does does say "small number" and "peculiar locations" it sounds like they were going out of their way to limit the scope. They could have said "When any entity is included in two states, it shall use the word 'and' to join the names of the states" or something and they didn't do that. BUT, I definitely agree that it should be discussed some more before implementing. Herostratus (talk) 02:34, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- I now don't know whether I support or oppose. I'm not following the threads, and I'm really really busy in RL for another week. I urge caution. Tony (talk) 08:58, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
- Well you wrote (in the " Two commas" section): "Yeah, per Arthur Rubin and Bkonrad. Avoiding potential ambiguities is best done by an unerring application of the second comma, even though I sometimes find it a bit bumpy." (Expanding the pers, Arthur Rubin wrote "Definitely two commas. Even if there were no confusion, the state name is parenthetical, which requires that it be set off by two punctuation marks, whether they are commas or parentheses." and Bkonrad "Good grammar requires two commas. If this construction is awkward, then find a way to re-word to avoid the need to use this form".
- So that's pretty clear, and no backsies, by which I mean a survey is a snapshot in time, like a vote in RL and while second thoughts are certainly rife in both cases, it is what it is, an if it was otherwise it'd be that much harder to nail down a decision, which IMO is what was called for here.
- There's no need to move hurriedly, true. Want to nail down an answer to the "and" vs en dash question before proceeding anyway. Herostratus (talk) 02:34, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Cologne Cathedral
I have responded on the talk page.
Amandajm (talk) 05:05, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- OK. Me too. You make cogent points and may be correct. Herostratus (talk) 06:15, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- As it happens, I am Anglican, but I am steeped in Catholic tradition, as an art historian. I write about Catholic churches: St Peter's Basilica, for example, is mainly my work. So is St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. I largely wrote and maintain the Cologne Cathedral page as a memorial to a dear friend (even though that fact is not apparent).
- In Australia, where I live, the Catholic population is probably about the same as the Protestant population. It may well be considerably more, now. (This wasn't the case when I was a kid).
- There has often been a very unpleasant competitiveness between Anglicans and Catholics. This is particularly the case in Sydney, where the Anglican Church has a long and ongoing antipathy to Catholicism.
- I am always very hesitant to label anything about a church building as specifically Anglican or Catholic, unless it is a relevant aspect, because it immediately draws competitive comment.
- At times individuals have insisted on going through all the Anglican Cathedrals of England and writing "previously Catholic" into the first sentence, which really is quite superfluous, since it is not relevant to the present day, and the facts of history are always set out in the text.
- This sort of stuff has been ongoing since I started here. Writing articles such as True Cross and Holy Chalice have provoked quite unpleasant sentiment from people who consider such Catholic traditions as nonsense and unworthy of an article.
- Consequently, when it comes to a matter of "tallest Catholic Cathedral", I would very much just prefer to say "second tallest cathedral in the world to Ulm Minster" and leave it there. Ulm Minster happens to be Protestant, but that is of no relevance to the architecture or the height of the spire, whatsoever.
- What is relevant to Cologne is that it is a Catholic Cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Cologne. It celebrates Catholic Rites, and was a World Youth Day venue for the Pope. In all these things, it is Catholic.
- But the height of its spire has no relevance to its Catholicism. At that point, it falls into competition with every other church. Gothic is a relevant category, but Catholic is not. Gothic is relevant, because a Renaissance structure, like St Peter's, has an entirely different form.
- Incidentally, I also draw distinction between types of construction. Salisbury Cathedral, for example, is always cited as the "tallest Cathedral in England", but rarely given its full due as the oldest very tall spire in the world. It is an amazing structure being stone ashlar masonry, completed in the early 1300s. Other spires are taller, but in its class, as a masonry spire, nothing in the world has ever surpassed it. It is made all the more amazing by the fact that the huge weight of stone rests, not on four walls but on four arches. Moreover, unlike all the openworks spires and metal-sheathed spires, it has not had its fabric replaced, beyond some restoration of the outer surface, in seven hundred years. It is one of humanity's supreme achievements. The fact that the church happened to be Catholic at the time that the spire was built, and then changed its denomination in the 1530s is irrelevant, to its greatness.
- Now, if you don't mind, I would prefer to leave denominations to where they are truly relevant.
- Amandajm (talk) 12:01, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- OK. I responded on the article talk page, to the effect that I still don't really agree but I'm willing to yield, partly on the basis of your value as an editor rather then necessarily on the merits.
- Just one thing. As I said at the article talk page you've clearly done some great work. I want to keep you humming along and happy here, but I feel like I'm sort of catching the very first signs of incipient burnout. You're working in a stressful area, because religion is involved and you know how people get about that. And you're an expert in some subjects (I gather) and of course there are all manner of people here, including morons and semiliterates, and that's stressful. Maybe a little of that is coming out with the "Now, if you don't mind" and so forth. "Now, if you don't mind" comes across a just little bit peremptory, or maybe just exasperated. For my own part I don't mind, but it's the kind of thing that's liable to get people's back up, and then you have a downward spiral in the conversation, and enough of those and a person tends to burn out.
- I'm not complaining! All this is quite minor compared to your content contributions. I just don't want you to burn out. Of course I could be reading this entirely wrong, and if so, sorry and forget it. Anyway, I don't have an answer to burnout or to the stress that erudite people probably get working here (I have little formal education myself so it's not an issue for me). Anyway, happy Wiki'ing, thanks for your work, and best wishes to you. Herostratus (talk) 05:16, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Assumption and specialized knowledge
Please do not make brazen statements in your edit comments regarding the List of Russian rulers where genuine queries have been raised. Have you taken a look at the talk page which gives some insight into the complexity of the issue? What you assume and genuine historical debates are not necessarily the same thing.
For example: 1) you have cited Russiapedia, the neutrality of which is disputable in itself; 2) you have cited an article (Kievan Rus' and Mongol Periods) without actually having properly parsed the information, mistaking the use of "Russia" and "Russian" simply because the Anglicized nomenclature proliferates the article. Please read it again, having first looked at issues raised on the talk page here to familiarize yourself with nomenclature issues surrounding the Anglicized name. Also, note that there are a plethora of articles in Misplaced Pages itself (worked on by people who know their way around Eastern Slavic history) which demonstrate that there is nothing obvious or linear about "Russian" history. Take a look at Kievan Rus' and the entry you've cited in Russiapedia which states, "Meanwhile, Moscow replaced Kiev as the new centre of spiritual and political power." Can you spot any differences between linear narrative and a less than linear narrative? The use of "successor states" is avoided in the Misplaced Pages article precisely because Muscovy and other states do not fit the definition of "successor".
Please feel free to join the discussion on the talk page. Cheers! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 22:10, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- No thanks. I'm sure it's complicated, but the general understanding in English sources is that Kiev and Russia are sufficiently intertwined that the statement "The vast territory known today as Russia covers an area that has been known historically by various names, including... Kievan Rus'" is not controversial. Whether it's "true" or not no one can ever know -- history is not physics and we can't re-run the middle ages and take notes, so it's ultimately a matter of opinion -- but that doesn't matter. It's the received wisdom, the general understanding, the accepted fact, the mainstream position, in the English-speaking world, and that's what we go with. - If was writing new material and referencing it like that.... I dunno. Then we could judge what the deal was by the quality of the material. He's just adding refs... I don't think I've ever seen this exact phenomena before and I don't know what to make of it.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Social_media&diff=prev&oldid=583753641 Here], for instance, he's taking an unreferenced assertion ("Facebook represents a potentially useful tool in educational contexts") and adding a ref. If the ref supports an actual academic person saying that, that's value added. Now a reader can can check the statement and see that it is indeed true, or more likely to be true than if we'd just said it ourselves. (A quick peek indicates that the ref supports the statement). Right?

I noticed your remarks concerning Articles for Creation in the AFerry deletion discussion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Four King Cousins, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page LP (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
