The name traces back to Abbas ibn Ali the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and the half brother of Hussain ibn Ali, whom took part in the battle of Karbala. Abbas is a figured revered by Shia's and therefore many Shia Muslims are named Abbas in remembrance and tribute to Abbas ibn Ali.
