Surf Ninjas is a 1993 movie, starring Ernie Reyes Jr., Rob Schneider, Nicolas Cowan, and Leslie Nielsen, about two teens named Johnny and Adam (Reyes Jr. and Cowan) who find out that they are heirs to a kingdom on a supposedly unknown island called Patu San. Their uncle, Zatch (Ernie Reyes Sr.), comes to save them and their friend Iggy (Schneider) from mercenaries that pursue them, and the story unfolds.
The film features the prominent appearance of the Sega Game Gear portable, which is owned by Adam and even plays an integral part in the story. There is also a video game adaptation of the movie in the same portable.
Trivia
- When Iggy is told he's not a Patusani prince since he's not Asian, he cites David Carradine as proof that he is, undoubtably a reference to the fact that Carradine played a Chinese man in the TV series Kung Fu, despite being Caucasian. Interestingly, Rob Schneider is in fact 1/4 Filipino, and thus really is Asian.
- Adam calls the ninjas Quimbys, possibly a reference to Chief Quimby of Inspector Gadget, who often wore outlandish disguises.
- For his presentation to the Baba Ram of Mee Grob, a holy man introduced in the story, Johnny and some back-up singers perform a spoof of the popular song Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys. The song appears again at the end of the movie in its unaltered form.
