In the aftermath of an armed robbery, Virgil Tibbs is forced to shoot a suspect. After realizing that the person he shot was a teenaged girl, Tibbs has a great deal of difficulty dealing with his emotions. Matters are made worse when the gun that the girl supposedly pointed at Tibbs is nowhere to be found.
