== The next evolution. == | |||
Diderot started the original encyclopedia, and others helped start Misplaced Pages. What will be the next evolution? Could it come from the Brainy Bunch? How does one classify art from graffiti? What is the difference between "enlightened work" from non-sense? Are results the only outcome to measure? What if an i-phone became the new telephone linked to a cable in one of those red telephone booths in England? Would that public marketplace make it qualify as a new library of the information age? Does encyclopedic information have to all come from one source to be considered consistent with the past definitions of pedia materials? Does a person's feet have to touch the ground while sitting in the chair in a college classroom to be considered a student? To be of student age in Africa used to mean a small child had to be able to put their arm over their head and if they could touch the opposite ear with it they were old enough to go to school. Was this fair? Have we as a society now redefined what it means to be pedia information? Is it right to come from only one source? Ethical?? A reasonable approach??? By whose standard???? |

History of writing
I keep trying to rollback History of writing because of vandalism, but I am getting an error saying the URL is on the spam blacklist. What needs to be done to rollback the article? LongLiveMusic (talk) 08:00, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

picture sizing
I have uploaded the picture in the box at Bone sialoprotein but it's come out smaller than I expected. How can I fix this so that the image width matches the box? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcus durrant (talk • contribs) 08:52, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- I think I've fixed it. Check it out: Bone sialoprotein. Basically, you were using the "thumb" keyword. For these templates, you generally just need to use "File:" and then the file name. Or just the file name only. Since you're just learning your way around, it would be best if you hit "Show preview" before saving your changes. That way you can see what effect your changes are going to make before you save them. Dismas| 09:05, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
picture of the day
How do I sign up to receive[REDACTED] picture of the day as an email? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:558:6014:A:6D36:5AA9:30FB:FF42 (talk) 09:48, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Normally, the way to get e-mails of changes to a Misplaced Pages page is to set up an ATOM feed of the page and select Outlook (or whatever your e-mail client is) to display it. However, that is not so easy in this case. The POTD is transcluded onto the main page from Template:POTD protected (see Template:POTD for picture without the blurb). The correct picture is transcluded onto the page by use of date magic words so the page never actually changes and no e-mail will ever be generated. You could instead set up a feed of Misplaced Pages:Featured picture candidates but you will get a lot discussions in the feed as well as new pictures, so probably not very useful to you. Easier just to check the picture every day. SpinningSpark 11:09, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
picture of dunstable ma
There couldn't be a bigger eyesore in Dunstable, the only property that should be renovated, it upsets me that it is now on my facebook page , why not a picture of the town hall or the gazebo in the center ? Anything but this it looks like an old shanty town , which it is not. Is there any way to change this, IU am sure all in town would agree. Regards Kathleen — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.189.44.115 (talk) 13:28, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Is this about the Dunstable, Massachusetts article? If you look at this page of potential images about Dunstable, Massachusetts, you'll see there isn't a lot of choice. Would you rather it showed a picture of your town hall, maybe? Or, you could take other pictures of your town and upload them to Wikimedia Commons (we could help you with that) to make sure there is more variety. Skittle (talk) 13:54, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- I don't consider myself a good judge of aesthetics; but in such a clear-cut case I have replaced the picture of the building with the ice bin in front of it by one of the town hall. Maproom (talk) 14:19, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Also, Misplaced Pages has no control over what shows up on your Facebook page. Talk to Facebook about that. RudolfRed (talk) 18:13, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Tornado
I was reading about tornados that have hit the Kansas City, MO area. I have something to add about the following tornado. F5 SW of Williamsburg to E of Raytown, MO (SE Kansas City) Franklin, KS, Miami, Johnson, Jackson, MO 0015 69.4 miles (111 km) 44 deaths - Tornado began near Williamsburg, and moved NE through several counties. Major damage occurred in rural areas near Ottawa and Spring Hill, where homes were completely leveled and several fatalities occurred. The tornado continued into the southern suburbs of Kansas City, tearing through Martin City, Raytown, Hickman Mills, and Ruskin Heights. Entire blocks of homes were completely leveled, many of which were swept cleanly away. Many businesses including a grocery store, a shopping center, and restaurants were completely destroyed. A few of the businesses at the shopping center sustained F5 damage. Vehicles were thrown through the air and destroyed, and the steel-reinforced Ruskin Heights High School was badly damaged. A canceled check from Hickman Mills was found 165 miles away in Ottumwa, Iowa. There was a water tower next to C.A. Burke grade school in Ruskin Heights. During the tornado the winds were so strong that straw was imbedded into the steel water tower. My family and I made it through the tornado we had minimal damage to our home. I am 67 and to this day can see the tornado in my mind. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.42.200.216 (talk) 18:56, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Todd Hunter Nagar
Todd Hunter Nagar is a place in Chennai, located at saidapet. It is Quarters for the state government staffs. It has more than thousand residents. I strongly believe there has to be an article regarding this locality in wikipedia. There are several articles of this residential area, that are being published now and then in news papers. And it just behind the metro station and near to Y.M.C.A. and the coovam river at saidapet. So please kindly consider my request and help me create a page for this location to make it a landmark in the future. https://www.facebook.com/toddhunternagarop?ref=hl — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jean El Dani (talk • contribs) 19:54, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, Jean El Dani. If this place is notable (i.e. has been written about in several reliable sources such as major newspapers or books from reputable publishers), then it merits an article, and you are welcome to try writing it. Please see your first article. --ColinFine (talk) 21:26, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- From WP:GEOLAND, "populated, legally-recognized places are typically considered notable, even if their population is very low". The general consensus is that a reliable source merely confirming existence is enough for a settlement to have an article. SpinningSpark 21:58, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

What realistically constitutes a verifiable fact?
Just a general question concerning just how verifiable a verifiable fact needs to be. For instance, I was looking at many, many pictures and much video footage and reading many forum comments concerning the tattoos that a certain person has. It is widely known that the person in question already has several tattoos that have been acknowledged on Misplaced Pages and it is generally accepted that they have had more. However, since the addition of these extra tattoos has now become so commonplace that they are no longer worthy of mention on 'respected' sources, there is no possible way to cite sources. In fact, it may never be. This means that the information presented on Misplaced Pages is incomplete and therefore is actually almost misleading to anyone who wishes to find out a complete description of all that is known about this person's tattoos. As I said, there are many photographs and many videos that show that the current tattoos that this person has are indeed there beyond all reasonable doubt, but if one cannot cite photographic sources and the only citations acceptable have to come from some kind of text on some list of 'trusted' sources, how can Misplaced Pages ever hope to become what it intends to be? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.104.72.4 (talk) 01:38, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Is this a real example? Either way, if those particular tattoos haven't been deemed worth mention elsewhere, we don't care either. That's more an issue of undue weight than verifiability though: a photo of the tattoo may be proof that the tattoo exists, but it's not grounds to say anything about it. --erachima talk 01:49, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- I see no reason to think that part of what Misplaced Pages intends to be, is the place where you come to get a definitive inventory of every tattoo some random celebrity has on his/her body! That's a truly bizarre expectation. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:35, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- This reminds me of the disagreement over the Christy Mack article over the last few days. That aside, if the person is known (at least in part) for their tattoos, I see no reason not to at least discuss the tattoos and give them the weight that they deserve. (See, as mentioned, WP:UNDUE) But you're mistaken in that Misplaced Pages aims to completely cover every subject with some sort of infinite detail. That's too much to expect from an encyclopedia. For instance, I'm reading an autobiography by Neil Young right now which mentions several of his cars. Even down to some of the trim and accessories that they had. I would not expect that in an encyclopedia article. I'd expect some mention of him owning several and being a fan of cars but for the minute details, that's what biographies are for. Dismas| 03:39, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Since I'm not permitted to create categories on Misplaced Pages, what about the possibility about asking other users
I've been trying to ask other users to mentor me; but so far they had said no. I don't want to make further mistakes on Misplaced Pages, and just to be carious I'm concerned.... Would there be anyone willing to help me? And please; Misplaced Pages users should call me by my real name Kristine. Venustar84 (talk) 03:54, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- You can request a mentor at Misplaced Pages:Adopt-a-user where you can either select an adopter from the list Misplaced Pages:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area/Adopters and contact them on their talk page. Or you can simply edit your own talk page with the legend: {{subst:dated adoptme}}, which will add a template advertising your desire to be adopted.--Ykraps (talk) 10:59, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Images in public domain in India
According to the Indian copyright act works published before 1964 are in public domain. I want to upload posters and screenshots of India films released before 1964. Where should I upload the images - to Commons or English Misplaced Pages.--Skr15081997 (talk) 06:44, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- If you are right about their copyright status, it will be better to upload them to Commons. Maproom (talk) 07:08, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- That is not entirely correct. Files hosted on Commons must "be freely licensed or public domain according to both the law of the United States and according to the law of the source country" according to Commons:Criteria for inclusion. If the image is uploaded from a third country, it must be free in that country also. However the Berne Convention rule of the shorter term probably applies if 1964 is correct for India. I submitted my first article named Hunt Monitor three days ago but I cant find it. Searching says it does not exist. Would I have been told if it had been turned down? Maybe I didnt complete the process properly and should start again? Does it have to be approved first, if so how long does that generally take? I submitted it before I registered as Zinfandelorganic. Thanks if you can help, I much appreciate it. I am very new to this and cant find a simple step by step guide to the process. Tool to mass change date formats?
Hello, I've been on Misplaced Pages for a while but my experience with tools is extremely limited. Could someone point me to a tool which can mass change all the dates / accessdates formats in an article? Thanks in advance! starship.paint ~ regal 08:44, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Not sure that you should be mass changing date formats in articles, it is unlikely that all the dates in an article are the wrong format, did you have a particular article in mind? MilborneOne (talk) 09:24, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed with MilbourneOne, date formatting has been a bitter contentious issue in the past and editors have been banned over it. Generally, the established date format in any given article should be retained per WP:DATERET. Date formats should only be changed in an article to make them consistent with the established style or if they do not comply with the MOS (MOS:DATEFORMAT). Anyway, to answer your question, AutoWikiBrowser can do this for you, but to reiterate, you probably shouldn't be doing it. SpinningSpark 09:43, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Be consistent with publication date formats and access date formats in the references.

You see, I am just starting to not only edit bit create articles and I was wondering what is the minimum amount of references needed before I can submit an article? Thank you. Mr. Yondris Ferguson (talk) 17:09, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Mr. Yondris Ferguson: There is no set minimum, per se, but not having any references makes an article likely to be deleted. As long as there are a few, reliable, relevant references, it should be adequate for a short article. Piguy101 (talk) 19:34, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

A little BLP help, please
Lolly Badcock (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) I reverted an edit by an IP on the Lolly Badcock article due to BLP concerns. Specifically because the edit provided a birth name which was unreferenced. They have since re-added that name and provided two sources which, judging by the URLs, look like forums. I can't reach those sources due to my employer's firewall. I'm editing from work. So, could someone who can look as some possibly NSFW sources, please take a look? Thanks! Dismas| 23:56, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

- @Piguy101: Thanks much! Dismas| 01:28, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
And I have reverted back as Dismas (and now yourself) keep re-instating unreferenced birth details. Funny it's OK for one editor to revert to false unreferenced information, but not OK for another to add correct information with multiple references. The forum posts, made by the person in question and just as reliable as a Twitter post, are in addition to to the references already in place. Forum posts are only not to be used as references if they are general posts made by a member of the public. Dismas claiming there are no previous references is false.
92.8.30.213 (talk) 10:33, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- The references dont really meet the requirements for BLP information, I have removed the assumed name and also the external links dont agree with the place of birth so I have removed that until somebody finds a reliable reference. MilborneOne (talk) 13:13, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
The FOUR references do meet the requirements, but whatever. It isn't an assumed name - unless you know better than the subject herself. You have (again) removed the reference of the archived version FROM HER OFFICIAL WEBSITE that states her birth place as Norwich. But according to you experts, an archived version of an official website doesn't meet the requirements. Clearly nonsense, but this is your club obviously. And naturally, posts published publically by the person (not under an assumed named) on a forum don't meet the requirements - when clearly that "rule" in reference to using forums as references is to do with using random posts about a subject, not actual posts by the subject in question.
Perhaps if editors like Dismas actually edited pages on subjects they had any genuine knowledge on and contributed to Misplaced Pages beyond reverting edits based on their (and your) interpretation of good references, Misplaced Pages would be a better place. Perhaps if editors could ACTUALLY read references, that'd be a good start.

Geotag on an image I uploaded identifies my street address

Thanks, LeNez (talk) 05:40, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- I went to the article to replace the reference by a correctly-formatted version. But I found that the page linked to gives "Warning: implode() " messages instead of useful content, so I have simply deleted the reference. Maproom (talk) 06:50, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Natasha Stott Despoja
I have just read the article on Stott Despoja and feel it is inadequate. I have written a book about the Australian Democrats and have interviewed numerous senators and other members of the party.
How can I offer suggestions for improving this article?
I am computer literate but struggle a bit with complicated techniques. If you can explain in small words it would probably help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.72.167.131 (talk) 05:48, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Page deletion
I will shortly be releasing a new article into the mainspace but the title is currently occupied by a somewhat pointless redirect here ]. How do I request deletion of this page? Please don't move the article, which is currently at User:Ykraps/Pierre Thouvenot, as I still have some work to do before nominating for DYK. I just want to know what steps I need to take in advance. Thanks--Ykraps (talk) 09:16, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- You can request deletion of the redirect and its replacement with your article by listing it at Requested Moves. Alternatively, feel free to leave me a message at my talk page when you are ready to go. Euryalus (talk) 10:16, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- I intend to nominate the article for DYK and therefore I don't want anything to stall the process. I am going away soon so I am reluctant to request a move in case someone moves the article and I find it is no longer eligible for DYK when I return. If I wait to request the move until I get back I will presumably then have to keep a careful eye on the article and nominate as soon as it is moved into the mainspace. That's not ideal because I work a lot and have other commitments and could quite easily miss it. I think what I'm saying, in a rather roundabout way, is, if I contact you when I am ready to go, do you, as an administrator, have the power to make that move for me?--Ykraps (talk) 10:49, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Why delete the existing page? Standard practice is just to edit a redirect and replace it with an article, if one is available. Since you are the only contributor to the user space page, if you were to copy/paste that text, there would be no attribution problem. Johnuniq (talk) 11:09, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- That would be an ideal solution but I am concerned that the page will not show as a new article, having been created in June.--Ykraps (talk) 11:29, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- You cannot have a page deleted in order just to improve your personal standing at DYK. That would be entirely against the main purpose of Misplaced Pages. However, your draft would still be eligible for DYK under the five-fold expansion rule so you have no real need to delete it on those grounds anyway. An acceptable reason for deleting the redirect is to preserve the editing history of the draft (in cases where more than one person has edited the draft this is, in fact, essential). Administrators can do this, but it cannot be done ahead of time. The redirect might be "somewhat pointless", but it is at least providing the reader with the information that Pierre Thouvenot was a "French general of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars" so has an encylopaedic function. SpinningSpark 12:18, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- I am not asking to get a page deleted to "improve my personal standing at DYK", I am trying to create an article where currently there isn't one and at the same time draw attention to it through the DYK process. That is entirely the main purpose of Misplaced Pages! I may have misinterpreted your post but it comes across as a personal attack.--Ykraps (talk) 12:42, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- SpinningSpark's comment about a five fold improvement still holds water. That would be acceptable for DYK status. Dismas| 12:52, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- (after ec) You can do all of those things without deleting the page, as already explained to you. What I am saying is that deleting just so that your article shows as "new" is not a valid deletion reason. SpinningSpark 12:56, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, I accept that I can copy and paste my article to the existing page however when I nominate at DYK, I will be nominating as a new article, which it is. I cannot accept that the current page is an article. It is a redirect.--Ykraps (talk) 13:17, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

- You should probably check with the DYK regulars, (hopefully, some watch this space) but I would hope they would agree that replacing a redirect with an actual article counts as "new" even if the page doesn't show up on new page listing.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:42, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks that's a good idea. There is a place for comments within the DYK template so I will probably cut and paste as suggested above and add an explanation of what I have done.--Ykraps (talk) 23:06, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Note that the DYK rules (WP:WIADYK) explicitly mention redirects in connection with 5x expansion. SpinningSpark 00:29, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Requested move is unnecessarily burocratic and slow in uncontroversial simple "move over redirect" cases such as this. Using {{db-move}} is much quicker and requires no proposals, discussions, !votes, or other red tape. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:36, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Enabling user script on all languages
Is there any way to enable a user script across all language wikipedias? Like common.js applies to all skins, but I want even more "common" than that... I can't find any mention of that, so I suspect it is not possible, but I just wanted to check in case I missed something. I have a script that will work on various different language wikipedias, but it has to be installed on each language first. On most non-en wikis I don't have autoconfirmed (or whatever the relevant group is) rights, so I can't create a js page for myself on those. That aside, it's a bit annoying to have to edit 50 different pages which are all connected to a global login anyway. Anyone know of something that could help?--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 12:58, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Dudemanfellabra: According to Misplaced Pages:User scripts (in the collapsed box titled "full manual instructions"), you can load scripts located on different language wikis using variations of the following code:
mw.loader.load('//en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=script.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
. Though that would still involve editing 50 different pages as you say. benzband (talk) 13:16, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I know I can enable scripts on different language wikis, but the problem is I can't create my javascript files on some languages because I don't have the rights to create a page. So even if I wanted to enable the script on those wikis, I wouldn't be able to.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 13:22, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Okay sorry I didn't realize that. benzband (talk) 14:04, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
"New" display of the code tag
Has anyone else noticed that the <code>...</code> tag's display has changed? It's output used to look like identical to <tt>...</tt> to me, but is very different now. (Their current display side by side: code: lorem ipsum
versus tt: lorem ipsum.) Does anyone know the origin? I initially thought it was probably just Firefox's display, following an upgraded to the next version, but the same "new" display is showing for me in Safari as well.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:54, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Sources intermediate between journal and encyclopedia
What's the suggested citation formatting for edited volumes that are part of a release series that is not a journal? Typically, collections in a book series that has both a general name and individual titles for its volumes (e.g. Mémoires de la Société Finno-Ougrienne.) It is clearly possible to either use Template:Cite journal and ignore information such as the volume title and editor; or to use Template:Cite encyclopedia and to ignore information such as the issue numbers and the series title. But these compromises seem unsatisfying. --Trɔpʏliʊm • blah 15:29, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- Template:Cite book has parameters for volume, editor, and series. Will that work for your purposes? Howicus (Did I mess up?) 16:20, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- The name of the paper within the book goes in the "chapter" parameter like so,
- Smith, John. "Smith's chapter title". In Jones, Jane (ed.). Jones' Book Title.

Copying articles into the Special namespace for large editing jobs
Hi, I remember reading somewhere that for creating/rewriting entire pages there's some functionality for starting a page in the Special namespace and migrating it into the regular namespace once it's complete. Unfortunately I've lost track of where I saw this, and can't seem to find any reference to it anywhere. How do I do this? Thanks! Ouroborosglyx 12:53, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Ouroborosglyx: I don't believe there is a special page to do this, but you can create a subpage (eg Bacon/rewrite), edit it there, then merge it into the live article. Just make sure you comply with the condition at WP:CWW! --Mdann52talk to me! 08:31, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Ouroborosglyx and Mdann52: The page Bacon/rewrite should not be created. This does not create a subpage. Creation of subpages in the main namespace has been deliberately disabled for the English Misplaced Pages. What will actually be created is a top level page called "bacon/rewrite" which will be deleted by admins. However, subpages can be created in the talk namespace (eg Talk:Bacon/rewrite). See the guideline WP:Subpages for more details on this. I think the OP is probably thinking of the relatively new draft namespace, where the bacon draft for instance would be Draft:Bacon. Drafts can also be created in personal user space, for instance User:Ouroborosglyx/Bacon. SpinningSpark 09:07, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- I would exercise caution in re-writing an entire article, and substituting that for the existing article, as such "paste-overs" are frequently reverted. Incremental changes allow other editors to accept or revert individual changes, and discuss any controversial changes, be they additions, interpretations or removals, on the talk page, Conversely one massive change can only be reverted en-masse, and such total rewrites are often seen as attempts to WP:OWN the article, often leading to antagonism between the editor who has rewritten the article, and the other editors who have contributed to its evolution up to that point. - Arjayay (talk) 09:39, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I think what I read was suggesting creating drafts in personal user space. Thank you all for your help. I will be sure to take Arjayay's advice into consideration when proceeding. Ouroborosglyx 09:49, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Quotes from foreign languages
How do we embed quotes from a foreign languages into the articles? How does it look like with translations? Any examples? SkywalkerPL (talk) 09:45, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- WP:NONENG offers some basic guidelines. You'd probably want something like: "Gott würfelt nicht" (God does not play Dice), A. Einstein. Sometimes people place the parenthetical inside the quotes: "Gott würfelt nicht (God does not play Dice)", A. Einstein. My prefered style guide (the Chicago Manual of Style) recommends square brackets instead of parenthesis: "Gott würfelt nicht" , A. Einstein. A footnote is also an option in some cases. - Ok, cheers, thank you. :) SkywalkerPL (talk) 14:57, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- We have Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style#Foreign-language quotations but it is not especially prescriptive on how to do this. You might want to look at some Featured Article examples such as Georg Cantor#Cantor's ancestry and Niels Bohr#Later years SpinningSpark 15:26, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Repost the article "Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal"
Dear Sir/Madam,
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Bassem EL Sawy and i'm a member and a past vice president of a Rotaract Club named Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal which is a part of the Rotary International Organization. I wrote and edited an article on[REDACTED] with the following URL Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal
The article was removed by one of your volunteering editors, i tried to know why through his page and his reason was (A7: Article about a group or club, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject (CSDH)
Using[REDACTED] as a method of publication or informing people about our organization or work is the reason why we wrote the article at the first place and keeping the Rotary International and Rotaract International pages acknowledges that there is nothing wrong of us adding a page for our club.
I request adding the article back to[REDACTED] as i tried the talk tab to resolve this issue with the editor and i never got a reply back on the issue.
P.S. I have all the rights to use the club logo or add any information about the club as a club member and a former club officer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.32.38.153 (talk) 10:59, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- First of all, since you are connected with the subject of the article you have a conflict of interest. You should read our conflict of interest guidelines. Basically, you should not directly edit articles with which you have a conflict of interest, but you can make suggestions. There is also the Articles for Creation process. Secondly you should read our notability guideline which explains how Misplaced Pages defines and establishes notability. Finally, the administrator who you contacted, Malik Shabazz, did reply to your request. SpinningSpark 15:41, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Second, Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia. It is not a "method of publication or informing people about our organization or work", see WP:SPAM.--ukexpat (talk) 16:55, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
How to create a Category?
Deaspite long searches, I can't find how one creates or proposes the creation of a Category. Is it my stupidity or is the information well concealed? --Clifford Mill (talk) 11:16, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Clifford Mill, you might be interested in Misplaced Pages:Categorization#Creating category pages. benzband (talk) 11:39, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- There is rather too much information at Help:Category. In short, you can add, for example,
]
with other categories near the bottom of an article. That is technically all that is required, but the category will show as a red link. Clicking the red link will go to the category page which you can create. Technically, all that's needed is brief text like "This is for examples". However, a lot of stuff is normally added and the simplest is to find a similar category and copy what it does. Having said all that, creating categories should require quite a lot of thought, and occur after a lot of reading starting at the above help page. Johnuniq (talk) 11:48, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Please keep in mind that the new category itself must be included in at least one "parent" category, orphan categories are useless and subject to prompt deletion. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:18, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- That's right, and the parent category is the bare minimum that needs to be on the page. Frequently, that's all there is, there is usually no need for an explanation of what the category is about. Maybe if there is a main article for the category that will be there as well, but that's all. See Portal:Contents#Category system to find the top of the category tree and work down to where a new category might belong. SpinningSpark 15:53, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

The next evolution.
