Henry Hudson (place and date of birth are unknown) is an English explorer and navigator.
In 1607, Hudson set sail on the Hopewell to find a northeast passage to Asia through the Arctic Ocean but found there was no way through the North Pole. He made several other voyages from England and then in 1609 he moved to the Netherlands where he sailed for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His first voyage from the VOC was on the ship Half Moon and in April of 1609 he set sail westward. On this voyage he explored the eastern coast of North America including areas such as Maine, Cape Cod and what was later named the Hudson River in his honor. The Dutch later settled in the explored region, naming their city New Amsterdam -- which later became New York.
On his final voyage, in 1610/1611, he discovered the Hudson Strait and the Hudson Bay, but his ship became frozen in the sea ice. His crew mutinied and forced him into a small boat where he is presumed to have died.
